I've owned, shot, and hunted with .22 guns my entire life. I grew up in the wilds of Iowa back in the 70s and have taken just about every game animal with a 22 there. My parents would slaughter hogs and cattle for family consumption and it never failed to amaze me that something as small as a 22LR would drop a 900 lb steer with one shot to the head. Same for a hog. Anyone who underestimates the lethality of a 22 is foolish.
That’s not true. A .22lr is not good for self defense at all. The caliber is about the size of a bb pellet with no knock-down power whatsoever. You parents lied to you, they used a 12ga.
That's why they put the 2nd amendment there in the constitution, it's been put there to keep the tyrants in check. Especially the new would be tyrants, AOC, ILMAR, PELOSI, SCHUMER,FEINSTEIN and many more. My personal opinion is to hang treasonous m.f who want to change what has been around longer than them, namely the constitution 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I disagree that 22LR is bad for self defense. Just practice 2 or 3 shot bursts. Anyone not wearing body armor will drop like a sack of potatoes. The decreased recoil will even help with accuracy.
+TANK In Canada you can get an SKS for $200 still I hear while they're going for $400 here at least during the election panic. Is it true Canadians can still import Chinese steel ammo? I hear it's cheap and good.
I have a lot of firearms, from the largest calibres to the smallest. The one gun I keep in my “go” bag? A Heritage Rough Rider .22LR (also with a .22WMR cylinder in there as well).
Easiest way to know someone is a CoD kiddie with no real firearms experience, is if they claim that .22lr is "non-lethal" or "like a pellet gun." .22LR is lethal out to *400* yards, and a stray shot can still cause serious injury up to *1 mile*. Does that sounds like a pellet gun? Hell no. .22LR may not have the instant stopping power of heavier calibers, no. But whether you die instantly from the massive trauma of a .45, or die 5 minutes later after bleeding out from a .22....either way, you're dead.
I have a nice Gamo TSX Extreme, and you're right a pellet gun is not that deadly, and I gotta say, 22LR is way more deadly. Any gun caliber is NOT a toy, not even the small 22. The effective range of a good pellet rifle is about 50 yards max, no wind. Very good working there.
Statistically on average both .22lr and .45acp take 3 shots to kill. In reality. 22lr only takes one to kill. The biggest factor for me is that I can shoot a .45acp no problem but I'll never be able to shoot it 5 times in a second and keep my groups anywhere near as tight as a .22lr. The recoil and accuracy alone are lethal. People say it's a good gun for disabled people and woman....so basically it's absolutely amazing in the hands of anyone else?
Americans are very lucky to have the second amendment. In my country the police have to come into your house and inspect the safe to ensure it is up to spec. You undergo psychological testing and jump through all kinds of hoops just for the chance to be considered for a permit and even the the police can reject your application if they don't like the way you look. Ps, crime is rampant.
+Ryno Burger Awesome. My wife and I are planning to go on safari in 7yrs. Do you know any outfits that are good? I am building a 416 Ruger based on a M77 MKII action.
You will not be able to bring the gun into the country. I think. Depending on the type of hunting you want to do. Big game like kudu and eland I would suggest bushfeld in the northwest province. Smaller game like gemsbok, springbok and blue wildebeest you can go to the lowfeld in Mpumalanga or the Freestate
Love my 10/22, same model you featured. I've used it to start many younger shooters who were leery of recoil. Very reliable and, I believe, the .22 LR will be priceless in a SHTF event. Thanks for the additional info on it. Great videos.
I remember my days in the police academy with my S&W model 10 revolver, I purchased an S&W model 18 which is a K frame rimfire handgun it taught me how to master double action shooting. How I wish I kept that model 18 revolver. Unfortunately divorce is another law enforcement reality.
I have a variety of calibers, but I find the 22LR to be the funniest to shoot. My first file as a teen was a Sears and Roebuck 22bolt action single shot rifle. I really enjoyed that rifle, in which I still have it and it’s still in excellent condition.
I have a friend who is a police officer. After hours of surgery, and the loss of a few feet of intestine, he will attest that getting shot with a 22 is no joke. I'm not trying to prove or disprove any remarks made in this video, or within the comments. I very much appreciate the video that Sootch00 put out, as he always conveys some interesting stuff. Thanks bro.
Walther p22 works well with buk ammo..... cant use supressors in canada ... our politicians still believe that you cant hear a supressed firearm .... watching too many movies ... and doing too much crack.
@@Epoch222 u need to take a test and then provide references fill out a form and send it to the rcmp wait anywhere from 2 weeks to over a year and then you can buy a non restricted firearm (bolt actions lever actions and most semi auto rifles with barrels over 16 inches for rifles and i think 12 for shotguns) then u need to do another course to get a restricted pal which means u can get handguns with barrels over 4.1 inches ar 15s scary looking guns and short barreled rifles.
I personally like .22 caliber very much because I have a mild disability and the lack of recoil and low weight are perfect for me. Also, I am very accurate with it. However, for self-defense, I use a .38 revolver that my dad taught me to use. It may not be a huge caliber, but I can put my bullets in the right place if need be, which lets me feel safer.
Maggie Koch my younger brother was injured in a car accident, he's here and well, but does suffer lasting damage from the incident. I steered him towards 22 and 38/380. I told him he could do it, and, he can do it well! he's a great shot. and also enjoys the 38spl. happy shooting :)
If you feel that you're lacking in stopping power, they sell hollow point bullets in both 22 Lr and 38. I personally prefer Remington Hollow-points for their reasonable price and damage.
I appreciate everything about this video. As a southern guy who grew up fishing, camping, and doing everything but hunting, I can say I enjoyed your analysis. I never grew up with guns though, as my parents hated them and wouldn't have them in the house. My first interaction with guns working with law enforcement at a training center in my early 20s. So naturally, the first one I picked up was a 9mm. As a 30 year old gun owner, pistol and shotgun, I can tell you I wish my parents had started me on 22lr. Thanks for simplifying this for some of us. I will start my boys on this is the years ahead.
Few months ago I was in South America and saw people hunt with 10/22 Ruger. I thought they are crazy but they shot deers and pigs with 10/22's. If they can kill a deer or a pig at 50 to 100 yards, it is already plenty against humans for self defense.
I got my wife's deceased grandfather's .22. It was made in 1922. It came with a cardboard/paper box of 50 shells. The box had to be 1950s vintage (or 60s at most) as her grandfather didn't hunt in his later years. They fired fine.
I just bought the same model my Dad had so many years ago. It's a Ruger MK1 but has the "pencil" barrel. Back in Albuquerque, he would take us kids into the mesa, where there was about a 30-ft arroyo. (Man, target practice was so fun back then!) He always brought it with us on camping trips. Time for me to get Wifey started - - thanks Sootch for suggesting starting her with .22-LR & then graduating her to larger rounds, will-do!
bill smith not to mention that if you have a couple of guys with 22s they can ambush the gestapo at a check point and get the gear and weapons that upgrades your arsenal you just let them carry them for you until you need to get some better gear and weapons wolverines tactics are great for gathering better bigger weapons systems for your own
bill smith .22 LR 21” barrel three hundred yards goes through four layers of denim and eleven inches of ballistic gel. Don’t sell it short. It can mess you up and you can get hit with many rounds due to lack of recoil.
Thank you for your video, just bought the 10 22 for home protection due to this covid 19 and the feel that people will get anxious and begin to violate me , my property and family, never really owned a gun before but in light of where we are now as you stated something is better than nothing..this is my starter and as I get comfortable as a beginner I'll move up to the 380 you spoke of...thanks for the info!
If it’s for home defense and you don’t want to be “violated”, get your self a pump action shotgun. In low light conditions with a moving target, a good scatter gun can be an advantage.
Sir Goop it's starting to come back around. But it's over priced. 8-10 cents per round. Walmart has them for 5-7 cents every now and then. But sold out with in the day.
22lr ammunition is so rare in my local area kn a 100 mile radius. So for around the same price as a 10/22 ruger I got a mossberg 500 shotgun. Wide variety of ammo and plenty of it.
You are correct sir. 12g shotshells in a box for $5.95 at walmart cant be beat! Especially since .22 is so hard to find. Shotguns can be used for everything as well.
Here in the UK people dont use shops and stores anymore. Just a click of the mouse brings stuff to our door the very next morning before we leave for work. I dont look to see how far my stuff comes from I just click. You cant get more local than your own study and have access to hundreds of traders.
Nice vid as always! I'm in the Republic of Ireland, have a 10/22, a .22 b/a and an o/u 12g. I can tell you I'm lucky to have them here. Getting much else is a bit of a drag to say the least but not impossible and you can pretty much forget getting a handgun, although there are some exceptions. I know you guys in the U.S have some hassles, but I reckon sometimes you don't know how blessed you really are. You just got another subscriber! All the best from the Emerald Isle.
We do have some hassles depending on what state you live in here. But places like my state (Texas) it's a background check and making sure you're 21 years old and that's it. Trust me some of us US gun owners feel bad for you guys in Europe that aren't allowed to own, let alone use a firearm in self defense
When I got into guns a few years ago it was nearly impossible for me to find .22lr on any shelf at any store, even online was a roll of the dice. Here it is years later, and I see it everywhere. I grab another box of 50 whenever I have the chance and a few extra bucks. Last week I saw the Remington "bucket-o-bullets" at my local trading post, and they had just recently started a "1 box per customer, per day" rule since everyone is panic buying. $69.97 said the sticker, "$60 out the door" said myself; and "take it on up to the register" said the shop owner. Still a little more then I wanted to pay, but knowing I only had a couple hundred rounds at home was enough for me to bite.
You better get stocked up on 22lr while you can find it. When you can no longer get it, you will not be able to get it any more. There is no reason you should not have at least ten thousand rounds for each 22lr firearm you have. Be safe my friend.
I love how quiet .22LR is when shot out of my AR-15 using the CMMG conversion kit. Seriously sounds like it's suppressed. It's also great having that kit, because in the pocket space of a BCG and a couple of mags, you can effectively carry a "second rifle." I run 5.56 for my AR-15 (not sure why anyone would choose a .223 barrel), and I can swap between 5.56 and .22LR on the fly. Takes about 15-20 seconds tops to swap the BCGs and mags. :)
I have the same set up. Great combination! We share the same thoughts on this. Perfect set up for new shooters as well as practicing technique. Muscle memory doesn't care about caliber!
Who, when, established the apparently complete difference between .223 and 5.56? My random use of both across a range of civvy and military (AR, FN and HK) calls bullshit.
Would never recommend .22 for self defense but its better than a sharp stick! Love your 10/22 with the wood stock. I have that exact same rifle. Didn't like the plastic barrel band so upgraded to metal. Also upgraded the butt plate and trigger. What a great firing rifle! Out to 150 yards I've had zero problems with accuracy and it eats any type of ammo. Have a cheap scope for it but since I rarely shoot further than 150 yards I just use the sights that it came with. No problem. Love seeing someone else using that rifle. Got it on sale at Walmart for $149.98. Its really a great gun! Love your videos. Very informative and you never seem to push your own agenda like some guys do. Great work and keep the videos coming.
This man is simply giving his opinion and a brief run down of different types of .22 cal. firearms. Thanks for the information!! TO ALL THOSE WHO DISAGREE THEN SIMPLY USE YOUR MOUSE AND CHICK ON ANOTHER VIDEO OR MAKE YOUR OWN AND POST IT....
I just recently saw other videos that Scootch00 has made. If I may suggest to all of you something. This guy knows guns! If you have $125.00 or 10025.00 to spend watch the others and he will let you know what to buy. His opinion only of course. But wouldn't you rather take the opinion of someone who is not being paid by one gun company to push their product....
I have yet to read where someone reported an intruder stopping and waiting to find out if the current victim is armed with a 22lr or 5.56 round. I walked out of the gun store yesterday and had bought 1,500 rounds of 22lr for $60. How many 5.56 rounds are you going to walk out with for the same $60? With the power argument, let me ask this. What vehicle, going 55 mph, would you rather get hit with, a tractor/trailer, or a 1/2 ton truck? Personally I wouldn't want to stand in front of either one.
SteamPunk Santa I hope you haven’t had your excellent example copyrighted....I plan on using this at the gun range the next time I’m asked...”why are you still shooting 22” ....with your permission sir...may I use this😎
i have a Beretta m9a1 22lr pistol modified to hold 18 rounds and 1 in the pipe and still look stock. at 30 yards i can put 18 holes in you as fast as i can pull the trigger. and this gun is reliable, it will cycle any 22 ammo all day long with out any problems. well except the 750 feet per second subsonic rounds, you do get a few jam ups with that ammo. but what gun doesn't. well i can think of only 1. i recommend this gun to anyone and everyone. it is the same Beretta service pistol that the military carry's except chambered in 22lr. out of all my guns i like this one the best and shoot it the most. Long live the 22 ! I also have the Beretta u22 Neos 22lr pistol with the 6 inch barrel. love that gun to. haven't found any ammo that this gun will not cycle, even the subsonic is no problem, and it is extremely accurate. only problem with this gun is the clip only holds 10 rounds but can be modified to hold 14 rounds. but for plinking and target shooting i like a larger clip. if you are new to guns these are great choices and you can't go wrong with ether one. and best part is you can find both at local pawn shops used for $150.00 to $200.00 each or buy new for around $300.00 each. hope this helps someone who is on the fence about what to get. stay safe and have fun shooting !
If I hear an idiot tell me "Don't use a .22, you'll just piss them off", I think I'll just piss THEM off. Nobody keeps coming at you after being shot, by anything.
Their is a thing called body armor that's y you need stuff like 45 cal or 44 cal or even 9mm if you shoot a guy with your 22 he will shoot back at you they have a gun so you mite end up dead
ComocosonoEWL just to let you no people that brake in to your home have a high chance of being on meth and meth makes them like a zombie their are guys that have shot people that are on meth with 7.62x51mm and 7.62x54r and the guy on meth is still charging at them so a low caliber will not really do any thing. I think the alcohol made it so the guy didn't have that much pane
the 22 is the most underestimated round on this planet, I love it, its amazing, extremely accurate, extremely lethal too, if I could only have one weapon , it would be my marlin model 60.
I agree, very underestimated round. I know an ex soldier in Nicaragua civil war during the ‘80s and they feared getting shot by .22 the most. Its what some rebels used, the round would tumble throughout the body causing major damage.
Finding the guns are one thing, the ammo is a whole other subject. My local walmart has the ammo resellers get there at 5 something every morning, all the gun shop owners show up, grab the max and take them to their own stores and double or triple the price. The Walmart guys know they are doing it but are helpless as they are still limited to 3 boxes like everyone else.
I don't live in a city, but owning a pellet gun is really useful. I have a Spanish rifle, the "Gamo" 5.5, and the pellets go through a 1 inch pine board. Imagine what they do to a rabbit! Regards
It is illegal to fire a pellet gun in most cities. "It shall be unlawful within the City limits to discharge any air gun, "B-B" gun, gas-operated gun or spring gun or any instrument, toy or weapon commonly known as a "peashooter," "slingshot" or "beany" or any other instrument, including but not limited to bows and arrows, made for the purpose of throwing or projecting missiles of any kind by any means whatsoever, whether such instrument is called by any name set forth above[Firearm] or by any other name."
By that logic, it is illegal to use Nerf and squirtguns and even slingshots. Well played to the asshat that thought those words up. They won't enforce it, but if somebody complains it gives legal precedence for them to throw the book at whoever broke the rules. (they aren't even legit laws, they are 'rulings' and ordinances. Which aren't even technically enforceable, but try to fight it and you're screwed.)
Great video. I just hope we can someday return to the days of plinking. I own two pistols and one rifle and love each one of them. Stay strong and stay together people.
Rather than buy a separate rifle chambered in .22, I just got a .22 upper for my AR platform rifle. I get to train with an AR platform for 85% of the drills that I need to do, and can use .22 ammo for survival/defense if necessary. Today, .22 ammo is back in plentiful supply. However I had to increase my supply prior to now. 6,000 rounds of .22 should last me a while!
The 22LR has one of the best track records for ending self-defense encounters - just under two shots with a 60% one shot stop on target parameter. Unfortunately, it also fails to stop in one shot 30% of the time. Nonetheless, two shots will usually do the job. It would be an error to underestimate the 22LR, which has killed more people (outside warfare) than any other round. Every home owner should have a 22LR in the gun cabinet next to their 12 Gauge -- a perfect pair for SHTF.
Great vid. All true..so many uses and upsides for the .22 LR round. The Ruger 10/22 is an American icon. Many of us got them for Christmas or birthdays when we were 10 and we still love shooting these rifles 45 years later. The M&P 15-22 is a neat rifle also, as is the Colt in this video.
.22 what a soft spot it has in my heart Each of my 4 kids got 1 wince I felt they were responsible enough We had safety training at the gun club I belong to and they all passed
I was kinda stuck on a large caliber rifle along with my 40 and 22 mag pistol. Also 12 gague with slug or buckshot. I began to realize that the 22 lr is cheap ammo, good for hunting and protection. A friend said a 22 shot to the head may not kill you, but it will change your mind! Now in 2020 we have to look at possibilities we wouldn't have considered before.
The CCI TACTICAL has the same preformance as the mini mags while being a wee bit shorter. It's not much but the MM jam in the HBAR Ruger 10/22 due to the length, while the TACs don't
This is from 2012. It's now 2019 & WALMART has announced their EXIT from Firearms & Ammo; Colt just announced they're out of the long gun market. Ammo costs are up, with money's lower buying power, more demand & possibly less supply. How times change.....
I have a Marlin 795 semi auto 22 lr and a Marlin model 22XT. Both amazing for me and both very accurate. A 22 is all you need. Dont ever underestimate a 22 lr. Ever!
Great video, and great comments. Very informative, and highly accurate considering a .22 for defense. One of my first handguns was a Rhom Gardner six shot revolver. One of my most favorite was a Harrington Richardson .32 model 929. They both were highly accurate, and getting used to the way they handled was amazing. I still have both. Still as accurate as wver, and love any sort of cartridge in the rimfire .22 caliber. I agree that Federal makes a great and cheap ammo, but in my experience with Federal, I have no misfirres, no swelled cartriges, and accuracy that would rival any oother weapon in a .22 caliber. The little bryco, I have had two of these guns, The First and the Last in the same time. Kel-Tec is far superior to bryco, Jennings, Jiminez They are practially worthless when t comes to accuracy, and handling. Love H(R. Keep up the good work my friend, and keep your voting straight. No Demos as they are all,,,,,, and I do mean all,,,,,,are anti second amendment. .
Sir, you forgot the most important scenario: Zombie Apocalypse! You can carry lots of 22lr ammo, you can find accessories or spares everywhere, also easily muffle any 22lr to great extent, it's super easy to headshot both the predating living and the undead with it, and last but not least: There's more 22lr ammo on the planet than people!
@TH-cam Veterinarian You know sir, in such a scenario, should I come across an item like that, I would definitely become unable to part with it. Indeed, a 9, 40, 45, whatever bigger than .22 I can find, you're right with that one, and for the same scholarly reasons. "OH SH... Oh F... OMG where did that come from - it has to go!". May you have a great day, fine gent!
@@thatsmytwocents4372 Oh I'm aware of the ongoing situation in the US m'friend, I feel you and all my fellow American shooting enthusiasts. If I had to find a positive side to this, it would be the supposition that all of those rounds, or the vast majority of them, that've been sold, most likely went to the right hands. Cheers, and may you have a great day sir!
I love how cheap the ammo is. Even during this pandemic, I was able to walk into my gun store and buy a 1,100 round box of Federal Black Pack 38gr CPHP .22LR for a measly $50 after tax. The same amount for my 5.56 AR-15 would be well into the upper $300 range, maybe even over $400 (don't really know, as I'm poor, and can only afford to buy 5.56 about 150 rounds at a time for $60). I still prefer my .40S&W Astra A-100 for my EDC pistol.
@Gray Au Yep, saving up for a reloading press and dies (gonna do it right and get me a Dillon 550c). Already reloading 12ga. I only bought my first gun a year and a half ago, and only have so much money. Even less money since I've been forced out of work for nearly the past 5 months. As for price, inflation is a thing. I remember back in the late 90s a big bag of chips was $1.50, and now it's over $5. For $0.045 per shot, I'd say .22LR is still very affordable, even if it were cheaper once upon a time.
I have a 10/22, but my favorite is a 22lr revolver. Something with a 4-6 inch barrel. I like them because they can fire 22 short, long, or long rifle, or shot shells. And they can cycle the crappy bulk 22. And with a decent set of sights you can still take pests and small game.
DATE: 2010- My main reason for shooting .22's is very easy to find ammo, and very inexpensive, and easy to shoot. DATE:- Today- Damn good thing I bought some in 2010….
I have all these different guns in various calibers and I decided to keep only my .22 and 9mm handguns. The .22 is fun to shoot, accurate, inexpensive and just as deadly as any other round. 9MM-- Well what can I say... A great round and with modern ballistics, no need for a larger caliber. Even all of the Police Forces are switching from .40 to 9mm.
Great video. I love .22's. We great up shooting a .22 rifle and just got a .22 pistol. I quickly learned going to the gun range and burning through rounds of 380 and 9mm that this was the gun for me.
Yes indeed Brother Can snipe Can defend Can hunt Lots of ammo available I'm currently sitting on 110 thousand rounds. If shit blows up in Virginia, I have zero problems shooting tyrants in the neck from 100 yards out
Mour Nukes I moved from VA to SC about 5 years ago and I’m glad I did it’s outrageous what these liberals are attempting to do in regards to gun rights. Definitely same as you if I was limited to choose only one firearm of mine it would be my 10/22. Lethal for small to large targets and if hunting won’t destroy what is edible, nearly zero recoil, lightweight, inexpensive and widely available and since mine is the takedown model very concealable. I’m really hoping the majority in Virginia see through the BS and fight to defend their rights whether it be the 2nd or any others. I can tell you my family and friends living back home do not take this lightly and they will not be left unarmed and helpless against anyone intending to do them harm. I’ve always liked the quote....when seconds matter the police are just minutes away
I still have some old .22 ammo with .50 cent price stickers on each of the 50 round boxs. Boy those were the days. You could shoot all day long for less than 5 bucks.
Randy Lunn prices on everything are horrible now. Ammo shouldn’t be that expensive, once you’re in the .308 range you’re looking at around at least $15-16 for 20 rds
You left out a great pistol in the Ruger Single-Six. Great gun and very accurate. Plus you can shoot from 22 shorts to lr.Had mine for over 30 yrs and it is great. Plus it has a 22 mag cylinder with it.
oddly enough I had a j22 and shot accurately out to 80 yards with one when i was younger it was my everyday carry folks under estimate the power and damage one can do
Great video. I've always heard that it's better to place 10 rounds of 22LR in the chest of an assailant than a single 9MM over the head because the young woman closes her eyes to shoot. There are a lot of reasons why people choose what they choose. I would hate to take 10 rapid fire 22LR in my chest or anywhere else.
My son loves his Ruger 10/22 rifle but I, a retired senior, prefer my Ruger Mark III pistol because it's much lighter and easier for me to carry around than any .22 caliber rifle. It's true what you said that one must practice regularly to be proficient with any firearm.
*Warning* This is long, but I think people need to read this that I'm sharing. I welcome all opinions, even those that oppose my own, but I want to share MY research and MY thoughts. If you have an opposing point of view, I respect it, but lets keep things civil. After much of sitting on the side researching different aspects of guns and people. I'm going to tell you why I feel like I may be changing to an M&P 22c as my EDC from my vp9sk. First off, Me. I'm 200lbs, solid build, have no issues with arthritis or anything like that. So I'm going into this with no excuses, just an educated decision. This will be my piece that I contribute to the argument. Scenario with a .22 against a "300lb body builder on bath salts". Let me break this down for you as I've been in the fitness industry for a long time. Both the physical and nutritional side of it. Your 300lb Bodybuilder on drugs scenario, you'll never see it (unless you consider steroids a drug). Which steroids, for one, doesn't make you a machine. All it does is allow you to eat less and put on muscle mass at the same time. Therefor you are lean and muscular. Otherwise not possible without years and years of dedicated diet and training in cutting and bulking cycles. Most people in this physical condition are all about health and fitness. 99% of them wouldn't be able to even afford the grocery bill to keep that condition, let alone drugs. Most people on drugs are piss poor health and would rather buy the next fix over food. Therefore, their body withers away. This scenario just doesn't exist outside a random internet video from 2011 or some shit that people Google to find. Also people, you have legs. If someone is running at you from a distance with a knife that weights 300lbs, I'm sure you can outrun them to keep a safe distance. We aren't sitting ducks. In a high stress situation, more people will revert to fleeing than a quick draw and fire out of instinct, unless you're trained very well. Home defense scenario: Nobody is sneaking into your house, gun drawn, ready to kill you. They don't want confrontation. If they sneak up on you with their gun drawn and pointed at you, you're already fucked. No caliber is gonna save you from being shot first unless you dodge (best you can) and run. The M&P 22c is very reliable and ammunition has come a LONG way from back in the day. Add a suppressor which actually increases accuracy and, now, they don't even affect bullet velocity. In fact they improve it a lot of times. You can unload your mag in a hallway and not go deaf. Also, the bullets typically stay IN the target with the .22lr. Therefore it's less likely to shoot through the target into a bedroom with a loved one in it. Let's also focus o the accuracy of the modern pistols and their follow up shots, the chance of missing in general, while highly possible under high stress, are just much smaller than your 40cal. If you pop a few rounds in a hallway with a suppressed 22, you will be able to also hear if their are more than 1 intruders scavenging around your house. 2 pops from a 40cal and you're a lot less likely to hear other noise in the home as well as you could without that blast. I know I know... adrenaline and the body do amazing things in time of need. I get that, but let's look at it for what it is. Also, many people overlook the ability to place excellent shots ONE HANDED with a 22. If you're holding your daughter or son or protecting them with your own limbs, etc. Or holding anything else in general to assist you. One hand needs to be something thought about more often than it is. Public scenario: This is what I'm actually more worried about than a break in at my home. That shouldn't even have to be said but, this world is fucking scary anymore! ESPECIALLY with schools! If I have to draw my gun in public to stop a shooter, I want to make damn sure I put as many rounds in him as possible without hitting anyone else or discharging my 9mm/40/45 firearm 1ft away from someone else's ears. I know it doesn't matter in this scenario, but what I'm getting at is this is the perfect balance between defense and responsibility. The good guys (us) are here to stop bad people from hurting good people and we don't want to hurt other good people in the process. Again, all aspects of using it at home carry over to public situation. Less likely to over penetrate and if it does, less likely to still retain the force to be deadly to an innocent bystander. I wouldn't recommend carrying a compressor in public for obvious law reasons lol. Being shot experiences: This is a thing I think gets overlooked by too many people. People look at ballistics, something that IS NOT THE HUMAN BODY, but is supposed to represent something close to what we could...expect? Look up what it feels like to be shot. It doesn't matter the caliber, the amount of shots hit, etc. Keep in mind every human is different, every situation is different, and God's will is always unknown. There is no instance where being shot by a 9mm or a 40 cal has been less desirable than a 22. People don't want to be shot at, period! And when they are, there are months of rehab and surgeries just from little 22's, maybe even permanent damage. Effects of the 22: I've seen this as a reference many time and I think it's an accurate one so I'm going to use it. The "Ice pick". An ice pick is what... 4" long in most cases? And people kill other people all the time with them, especially home-made ones in prison. 4 Stabs and you're hurting my friend, might even bleed out. Also, those 4 stabs will take longer than it would to empty 10 rounds of 22 into somebody. Now look at the bullet's probabilities. I'd say the bullet doesn't "bounce around inside the body, more so, it deflects off of bones. So imagine that ice pick, now imagine it going 8" deep or more, or deflecting and stabbing you 8" or more downward from the chest into the stomach or pelvis, or into the heart, out the neck, or into the brain. 5 of those hit you in 2 seconds even for the timing of a 12 year old trigger finger. 5 of those bullets are going in and all around inside of you. It's like stabbing someone multiple times really fast in all different directions inside one's body. Who's gonna fight after that? Nobody. Especially when you consider the amount of trauma and pain people have gone through from only 1 or 2. "Stopping Power": I think this has too many variables based on the individual and the reason they are fighting. Best believe if I was trying to save a loved one and I was shot in the heart with a 22 or a 9mm, I will give my last breath and adrenaline I have to do whatever I can. When you are driven in a manner like that, you'll have all kinds of last attempt probabilities. It's different than the petty scared house burglar. Conclusion: 90% of all testimonies, shot placements, number of rounds, etc, stay pretty consistent with all calibers from 22-45 or whatever gets you hard. The M&P 22c would be, what I consider, an effective, easy, and responsible gun. It's not built for overkill, but remember the 300lb bodybuilder scenario? Stop trying to prepare for something that doesn't really exist. I know it exists SOMEWHERE at SOME TIME, but let's be real. Effective, defensive, offensive, safety in mind, stopping power is there (I don't care what you say), light, versatile, 1-handable, easy grouping, it wins.
I understand where you're coming from, and I appreciate your views on the topic. I tend to catch myself shaking my head and rolling my eyes when the caliber debates arise. For me and in general, a pistol round is a pistol round; however, when given the choice, I can't say I'd ever deliberately choose 22LR over something more powerful for a few reasons: 1. Hitting the vitals. If I could guarantee that I could hit exactly what I wanted to hit, I'd be perfectly fine with a 22LR. I can't make that guarantee, so it's better for me to choose a bullet with greater surface area, increasing my chance of hitting something vital. A 9mm projectile with good expansion will have around 5 times the surface area of a slightly expanding 22LR. Although marginal when others factors are applied, it's still a big advantage. The next part of this ties into what you mentioned in your comment about being shot in the heart. When someone dies of a gunshot wound which isn't a headshot, the cause of death is almost always the same... loss of blood. How quickly blood is lost and how fast the brain loses oxygen will determine when that person will go down. If I suddenly acquired a .22" hole in my heart, I would bleed a lot and it would hurt like hell, but I'm certain I could continue the fight far longer than if I had a .75" hole in my heart. Either way, I'd be screwed, but the goal is to stop the attacker. Death is a side effect. 2. Penetration (I hate this topic). Let's be honest. Here in the states (assuming you're here as well), there are a lot of very overweight people. While the plausibility of a 300lb body builder on bath salts is questionable, a 300lb fat guy on Little Debbie's and Mountain Dew isn't. I'm not even sure I'm content with what I carry (9mm) for that scenario. Also, aside from blood loss and oxygen deprivation, the other main contender is a direct strike to the spinal cord. Even if the 22 makes it there, I'm not convinced it would be nearly as effective as a larger diameter bullet. 3. Home defense. Simple. I don't have kids. My closest neighbors are 1/4 mile away. No restrictions. Screw the 22. I'm breaking out the big guns! I'll just end there. You have several good points. I'm sure I wasn't as clear as I'd like to be on these few of mine, but oh well... still good convo.
Yeah, but to your point of bodybuilder vs a 300lb fat guy, fat is like butter to a bullet. Whereas muscle fiber is a lot more dense and resistant.all other scenarios people can agree, disagree, or agree to disagree lol. Everyone has an opinion, but sadly a super small percentage of people can say they've ever been shot and can attest to the damage and pain. The information pool will always remain a little small.
Dave, I read your comments on this and agree on a lot of your points, I recently purchased a S&W M&P 15-22 with the intent of using it as a fun gun, however I have been researching the lethality of 22lr and have been quite surprised by what I have found. 22lr hollow point high velocity bullets actually create a lot of damage without a lot of over penitration, especially when fired from a rifle. Control ability is excellent and with the right ammunition that will cycle reliably I feel quite confident my rifle would and hollow point ammo would detour most attackers, not to mention the sight of it could detour an attacker.
Yeah interesting comment except for the .22lr bounce around the body and bones theory has been proven false. It just doesn't happen. It's not like a pinball machine when you get shot with one.. just doesnt work that way. Not quite sure where that myth started but it's a myth and it will stay a myth. It's not a fact.. In a self defense situation your more likely to be so close to your attacker that you won't even need to aim no matter what caliber or gun your using. It will be point blank shooting
I would use a .22lr for a SHTF scenario, if it wasn't for the ammo costing like $80 per 500rds. Sure, it's still cheaper per round than almost every other kind of ammo, but still expensive, especially for 22's. I mostly blame the hoarders that went in and cleared off the shelves and don't use any of it for anything except to take up space.
Hi:) Wait till the company's ketch up to the supply and demand and the hoarders don't need any 22's the price will drop because of no demand and it will be cheap or they will not sell any. Don't go right out and buy till the bottom falls out of the price.
cybot63 I'm not planning on it ;) As often as I shoot, a brick of 500 rounds can last me almost a year. I'm still on my first one, about 250 rounds left.
Got my first .22 rifle, a Mossburg 342KA, in Jan 1966. Then I bought a Browning Buckmark .22 pistol in 1986, and I just bought a new Savage 64F .22 on March 18, 2021.
Very good video, I have a variety of 22 Cal weapons and they are great for plinking and training. I have taught my kids, grandkids and great grandson how to use a firearm safely with 22 cal weapons. They are fun and keep can keep you in practice at a cheap price.
Still got my Hi Standard I used. It was not silent but deadly and didn't burn oxygen that was in short supply in those deep holes. Man, I was a crazy man back 50 years ago. Just dug it out, taking to a gunsmith for some work then my grsndson is getting it
I thought the ruger 10-22 hadmore accessories available for than the 1911??.. i could be wrong but isnt the 1911 limited on accessories and the 10-22 almost unlimited?...
Personally I like the conversion kits. You get to keep your firearm in the same configuration but shoot more. The 5.56 to .22lr conversion kit is my favorite and I use it a lot.
Nice video..... Sunday morning we cook bacon..... after we eat I pour some bacon grease on my 22 hollow point loads.....what's that song? ANTICIPATION?
I've owned, shot, and hunted with .22 guns my entire life. I grew up in the wilds of Iowa back in the 70s and have taken just about every game animal with a 22 there. My parents would slaughter hogs and cattle for family consumption and it never failed to amaze me that something as small as a 22LR would drop a 900 lb steer with one shot to the head. Same for a hog. Anyone who underestimates the lethality of a 22 is foolish.
True that bro 👍
That’s not true. A .22lr is not good for self defense at all. The caliber is about the size of a bb pellet with no knock-down power whatsoever.
You parents lied to you, they used a 12ga.

One can put 500 rounds in each pocket and allows you to stay on the move!! The .22 HP is hard hitting and gets the job done!!
I disagree that 22LR is bad for self defense. Just practice 2 or 3 shot bursts. Anyone not wearing body armor will drop like a sack of potatoes. The decreased recoil will even help with accuracy.

@dunbar YES, Canada has plenty of 22. options, but they also have many of the big boys also, with affordable ammunition.

DONT KNOCK PE;;ET GUN EITHER ,IN THE HANDS OF A SKILLED MARKSMAN ,,,ITS DEADLY ALSO !!!!
R G especially the gas powered. 50 cal!
A 22 lr or mag to the head will kill you in seconds
My dad said that during the Depression, they hunted whitetail deer in Wisconsin with .22 LR rifles, always shooting them in the neck...

+Ryno Burger What country may I ask sir?
South Afrfica
+Ryno Burger Awesome. My wife and I are planning to go on safari in 7yrs. Do you know any outfits that are good? I am building a 416 Ruger based on a M77 MKII action.
Go to Tanzania. The Serengeti is there and just over the border in Kenya you'll find the Masai Mara. Better exange rate.
S & W made such great revolvers long ago, wish now I'd bought a few 40 yrs. ago
Divorce is another enemy of the 2nd amendment.
Long live the republic!
Being a retired LE and was on the Pistol Team shot placement is the key i would use a 22lr for self-defense
My grandpa has this great old Ruger Mark II. Love the style and functionality. First gun I ever shot.
Few months ago I was in South America and saw people hunt with 10/22 Ruger. I thought they are crazy but they shot deers and pigs with 10/22's.
If they can kill a deer or a pig at 50 to 100 yards, it is already plenty against humans for self defense.
Jon Snow really, in a hog hunt here i use a MP 15 22..... with mini mags..... letal.....six pigs.....15 shots....
I agree 100%!! 22 is the best survival gun there is. Just keep the rounds in vacuum bags that can be resealed.
I got my wife's deceased grandfather's .22. It was made in 1922. It came with a cardboard/paper box of 50 shells. The box had to be 1950s vintage (or 60s at most) as her grandfather didn't hunt in his later years. They fired fine.
Good idea
I just bought the same model my Dad had so many years ago. It's a Ruger MK1 but has the "pencil" barrel.

22lr ammunition is so rare in my local area kn a 100 mile radius. So for around the same price as a 10/22 ruger I got a mossberg 500 shotgun. Wide variety of ammo and plenty of it.

Yeah we finally got rid of Obama Now we gotta deal with his jackass buddy
You better get stocked up on 22lr while you can find it. When you can no longer get it, you will not be able to get it any more. There is no reason you should not have at least ten thousand rounds for each 22lr firearm you have. Be safe my friend.
@Lewis you as well Mr Lewis :) you can never have too many batteries for your toys! ;)
I love how quiet .22LR is when shot out of my AR-15 using the CMMG conversion kit. Seriously sounds like it's suppressed.
It's also great having that kit, because in the pocket space of a BCG and a couple of mags, you can effectively carry a "second rifle."
I run 5.56 for my AR-15 (not sure why anyone would choose a .223 barrel), and I can swap between 5.56 and .22LR on the fly. Takes about 15-20 seconds tops to swap the BCGs and mags. :)
I have the same set up. Great combination! We share the same thoughts on this. Perfect set up for new shooters as well as practicing technique. Muscle memory doesn't care about caliber!
What is the reliability of those conversion kits
Who, when, established the apparently complete difference between .223 and 5.56? My random use of both across a range of civvy and military (AR, FN and HK) calls bullshit.

A hit is a hit in a fire fight
I "wish" 500 rounds of .22LR was still around $20.00
How much is it nowadays? Here in Germany I pay for a value remington golden bullet 525 round pack around 32€
Around the holidays dicks sporting goods has the federal bulk boxes for like 27 bucks at least around Christmas time they did
used to be 9.99 for 500 rounds
+Fashion Felonx better than 70 for high grade stuff
+Ruebon Cogburn that's because it's high performance and it doesn't always work in all 22's
If I hear an idiot tell me "Don't use a .22, you'll just piss them off", I think I'll just piss THEM off. Nobody keeps coming at you after being shot, by anything.
Thank you.
I have a small .32 semi auto handgun. My buddy said, all you'll do is piss an attacker off. I said, yeah, but i'll piss him off 9 times!
Their is a thing called body armor that's y you need stuff like 45 cal or 44 cal or even 9mm if you shoot a guy with your 22 he will shoot back at you they have a gun so you mite end up dead
marco jonker way percentage of home invaders wear body armor? I would say it is negligible.
I think the alcohol made it so the guy didn't have that much pane
the 22 is the most underestimated round on this planet, I love it, its amazing, extremely accurate, extremely lethal too, if I could only have one weapon , it would be my marlin model 60.
treeblazin I know the model 60 is more accurate, but what do you think about a Ruger 10/22?
Great choice, and I have several of them for that reason.
Love my 60. Got it around 1993 or so.
A .22 blank can drive a 2 1/2 nail through concrete
I agree, very underestimated round. I know an ex soldier in Nicaragua civil war during the ‘80s and they feared getting shot by .22 the most. Its what some rebels used, the round would tumble throughout the body causing major damage.
Finding the guns are one thing, the ammo is a whole other subject. My local walmart has the ammo resellers get there at 5 something every morning, all the gun shop owners show up, grab the max and take them to their own stores and double or triple the price. The Walmart guys know they are doing it but are helpless as they are still limited to 3 boxes like everyone else.
Great video as always. You’re honest, knowledgeable and get to the point. Thank you, sir
If you live in the city and need to practice the fundamentals, a pellet gun is fantastic too.
A good airgun is not only good practice, but nice cheap fun!
I don't live in a city, but owning a pellet gun is really useful. I have a Spanish rifle, the "Gamo" 5.5, and the pellets go through a 1 inch pine board. Imagine what they do to a rabbit! Regards
PistnRods lol
Wow. I had no idea about the versatility of a 22!
Thanks.
A very informative video showing different type of weapons without endorsing any particular one. Great job!
I live in the uk I own a ruger 10/22 , it's my favorite rifle so many mods for it at a fairly low cost even here in the uk , great fun
I’m amazed everyone doesn’t have a 22lr. Here in SC I just assumed it was mandatory because everyone has at least a couple.
"This is a really up-close & personal self-defense gun!"
I love it!! : )
one between the eyes is a one shot man stopper!
wink dinkerson Exactly!!!! Finally someone that gets it... .22 will penetrate any skull on Earth easily! Enough said...
Very easily. I kill cows with em
3 center mass works too.
@Bob Goldman because they can't kill themselves
Or balls, nose, in ear, teeth, gap between the rib cage
just bought a 10/22 to go along with my SR22 pistol. I am covered in 22 now!
pick out what sootch you the most. lol I had to. Great video I'm thinking of getting a 22 so I'm glad you covered the handguns to rifles
Love that line: "I'm a gun nut!"
That's it, I'm subscribing..
😂😂😂
Great vid! Got a 10/22, M4 stock w/ several attachments under $500. Plus doesnt cost .50/rd to shoot
It was a huge jump going from my 22 let to my 12 gauge, after I shot the 12 gauge the 22lr felt like a Nerf gun
I did the same thing with a conversion. I have around 10k tounds. it's still the cheapest way to get rounds down range.
The only one that I've ever seen was from PSE. It's no longer available. It cost $1,200! It was extreme cool ,and I wanted one!
Good point! "One is none, two is one", eh?
All about having some redundancy with your gear. Whatever you can't afford to have fail, will, therefore get two of them . . . jus' sayin' . . .
Copy THAT, Ghost Rider! Good hunting!
Yes definitely agree
My thoughts exactly💪
Get a PMR30 and MP15-22... both will fit all occasions and good for self defense in that range
Dont forget a good ar15 next to that 12 gauge
"A man's GOT to know his limitations," Dirty Harry in Magnum Force.
agree love plinking with my 10/22
Some great points glad you brought up the noise factor.
You can tell the guys that have never had to shoot without their ears on indoors or out.
.22 what a soft spot it has in my heart Each of my 4 kids got 1 wince I felt they were responsible enough We had safety training at the gun club I belong to and they all passed
I bought a 10/22 as my first gun.
No Demos as they are all,,,,,, and I do mean all,,,,,,are anti second amendment.
.
I learned to fire the .22 at Boy Scout camp!
I'm pretty sure that's not happening any more
@Samuel Adam: Has this been confirmed ?
I couldn’t decide between the umarex colt or s&w 15/22 so I got both. I love them!
Try finding all that 22 ammo now !!!
Amen to that! I bought a lot of 22lr way before the shortage.
***** I probably have a couple thousand rounds stashed away from the day.
If the SHTF and l could only have ONE gun, l would choose my 10/22.
Yes indeed Brother
Can snipe
Can defend
Can hunt
Lots of ammo available
I'm currently sitting on 110 thousand rounds.

I wish we still had $20 bricks of 22LR cartridges ........
+Randy Lunn We do; they're out there. See the Federal bricks at Walmart.
I still have some old .22 ammo with .50 cent price stickers on each of the 50 round boxs. Boy those were the days. You could shoot all day long for less than 5 bucks.
Randy Lunn I saw a 555 round box of Winchester for 29 dollars at Academy a few days ago.
Randy Lunn prices on everything are horrible now. Ammo shouldn’t be that expensive, once you’re in the .308 range you’re looking at around at least $15-16 for 20 rds
Local Wal-Mart had bricks of thunderbolt for $21.88 that's about as low as I've seen it recently.
You left out a great pistol in the Ruger Single-Six. Great gun and very accurate. Plus you can shoot from 22 shorts to lr.Had mine for over 30 yrs and it is great. Plus it has a 22 mag cylinder with it.
I simply love 22lr! I don't know why some see it as useless.
oddly enough I had a j22 and shot accurately out to 80 yards with one when i was younger
it was my everyday carry
folks under estimate the power and damage one can do
22lr is actually a pretty savage shelf defense round. I've seen someone In intensive care for probably close to a month or two from gut shots
CZ455 with a scope will cover anything you need a 22 rifles to do and is super accurate.
For me and in general, a pistol round is a pistol round; however, when given the choice, I can't say I'd ever deliberately choose 22LR over something more powerful for a few reasons:
Your comments were logical and well thought out. Thank you!!
In Canada at our Canadaintire store they sell that M22 1000round bricks for 52.00 dollars but its get hard to find up here now.
I bought a 300 round brick for under 20 dollars in CT not too long ago..
Ya the local sporting goods here is selling 500 round Winchester wildcats for 34 dollars a brick+ tax
Got my first .22 rifle, a Mossburg 342KA, in Jan 1966. Then I bought a Browning Buckmark .22 pistol in 1986, and I just bought a new Savage 64F .22 on March 18, 2021.
A BB gun worked on the movie "Home Alone." Just aim for the groin.
Great scene.
0:15 there's something weird about seeing a tiny shell pop out if that huge gun😂
Very good video, I have a variety of 22 Cal weapons and they are great for plinking and training. I have taught my kids, grandkids and great grandson how to use a firearm safely with 22 cal weapons. They are fun and keep can keep you in practice at a cheap price.
I love my M and P 1522, it's customized to the fullest and I have 6 mags, I'm ready for the zombies.
Me too but i only have 3 mags
Disagree zombies won't bleed out it must have massive head trauma, stop the brain stop the zombie.
"Tunnel rats" in Vietnam used a silenced .22 (High Standard, I think) and it was lethal. Period.
Anatole Williams that’s what I was thinking
Ask pres Reagan if a 22 is serious
Brady law...
Or Robert Kennedy
Love my 22's , So Accurate and quiet ,
You got that right sootch ,,mine is a 22 magnum chuckster Mossberg ,just wonderful, had it since the 70s my very first gun to shoot when I was 9
Personally I like the conversion kits.
10:00 22 conversion on C|Z pistol. Change slide release.
Excellent analysis. Thank you!
