    For squirrel or other small game (even seen it take a pissed off raccoon), a .17 or .22 pellet rifle is fantastic.
    It's quiet, you can carry thousands of rounds, and it works without powder and primer.
    #1 Pistol ---- in the most common rounds that can be found like 9mm, .45, or perhaps a 357 magnum (can shoot 38 SPL)
    #2 Shotgun, pump style ---- 12 or 20 Gauge.
    #3 High Capacity, Scoped Battle Rifle ---- 5.56 AR-15, an AR-10 in .308, or an AK in 7.62X39.
    That's it other than perhaps a .22 Rim-fire for getting small game and being able to carry thousands of rounds easily.

    As Rick mentioned awhile back, I’ve chosen a .40 S&W P226 and have both a drop in 9mm barrel AND the .357 Sig barrel.
    3 handguns in one and you can scavenge ammo much easier if you can pick between 3 calibers.

    My absolute FAVORITE long range round is the .270. I have hit 2 Inch Targets with my .270 at 500 Yards!

    • @agentjonburrows9595

      I would agree, but the 6.5 Creedmoor won me away from the .270.

    • @thatguy22441
      @thatguy22441 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A .270 in a semi-auto platform could dish out a lot of long distance ass kicking. A super long range rifle like that is perfect for making sure the fucker never gets within range of his weapon. At 400 yards, the .270 has as many foot-pounds of energy as an AR at point blank range. There's a reason it's liked as much as it is.

    One thing we should have all learned after the last ammo shortage is the so called common, widely available calibers dont exist. Go with whatever caliber you prefer then stock up during non frenzied buying times. I do distinctly remember every store still stocking shotgun ammo at the height of the craze.

      Pretty much the default choice. I like my 1911 .45. I have a Remington 870 12 gauge pump but also have te Remington VersaMax 12 gauge Tactical. Of course my FN FNX .45 is a top choice too. .45 and 15 rounds per magazine. Corrosion resistant coating on top of a stainless steel slide and polymer frame make it weather resistant and a perfect field pistol. And my rifle is my FN SCAR 17 (7.62x51) can reach out farther than I can see. Devastating at close range. And can take large game if yiu have the opportunity.

      For defense:
      1. Combat rifle (AR, AK, G3 clone, SKS, etc.)
      2. Shotgun (870, M4, Winchester 1300 defender, Mossberg, etc.)
      3. Pistol (Glock, Sig, Springfield, Beretta, etc.)
      For hunting I'd go with:
      1. Medium bore rifle (bolt action or lever action firing anything from .243-.300 Win Mag)
      2. Shotgun, pump or double-barrel
      3. Any .22 rifle

    One thing to consider with all the different firearms out there is having a perfect pair, this is when two of your guns take the same magazines and use the same caliber. Example would be Glock and a Sub 2K or a Beretta 92 and a CX4. Whatever you do, make the smartest decision for you.

    Unless you are in an area where you need to reach out 300 or more yards, I would consider a 10/22 takedown .22LR. Mainly for hunting small game, yet is lethal and is easy to shoot for women and kids. With the takedown, it is concealable.

    2020 taught us that picking a popular caliber (9mm) does not mean it will be easy to find when SHTF

  • @sharkinfested
    @sharkinfested 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    For a handgun I would look at the .40 over the 9 mm. Last year's ammo shortage showed us that 9 mm was one of the first ones to disappear but the one caliber that was always at our gun shop and Walmart was .40.
    Also I hope everyone has built a little stockpile of ammo that they shoot as well. Another lesson they hopefully people have learned is that if you want to always have ammo you need to build a little stockpile so when it disappears again you won't be left without.

    great video Sootch! Another class of gun that is needed (but wasn't discussed) is a .22 rifle like 10/22. Useful for all sorts of food procurement in survival situation. Not necessarily a self defense gun but in a bug out system one could pair a 10/22 Takedown for hunting/survival with a handgun for self defense. Just some food for thought. One thing I like about Glock's is the magazines are interchangeable with all their models, provided they're of the same caliber. For that reason, you can carry higher capacity magazines for the Glock 26 if you should need them.

Last the reach out and touch someone 7.62mm NATO. My choice FN FAL, Optics for sure with fixed iron sights as well. Full military length barrel. Best SHTF firearm is a decent pump action shotgun 100% you'll be able to hunt pretty close to anything in north america from birds to elk, you'll be able to fight and defend yourself with it. And they have decent range probably out to 100 yards easy with slugs. If the target is beyond 100 yards thats not a threat and there are other options.

    Realistically speaking, what you should really worry about is if you're proficient with your weapon and if your weapon is highly reliable. You're proficient with a CZ 75 and a lever action rifle? Good. Proficient with a .357 magnum revolver and an AK? Just as great. Just be sure to have plenty of ammunition and you're ready to go in my opinion.

      1. 3 Pistols: Everyday Carry, Home carry/Night Stand gun and The One Gun (If you had to run out of the house with just one gun what would it be?)
      2. 3 Shotguns: Pump Action Shotgun, Home Defense Shotgun Auto-loading and Fixed defense shotgun or War Fighting Shotgun (i.e. Saiga 12 ga)
      3. 3 Rifles: A carbine for close quarter combat, a Battle Riffle and finally a Long-Range Rifle.

    As I see it, in a SHTF situation, we would need a few Glocks in 9mm & one cheap Ruger AR-15 in 5.56 per person. Also an AR-10 in .308 per family. That’s the minimum. Plus plenty of ammo. But in reality in a SHTF situation the 90% of the population would die during the first week. Lots of predators, thugs, gangs, and the chaos, the riots, the necessary executions by the army, and the food shortages and diseases, etc, etc. No matter how many guns you have, nobody would survive an apocalyptic situation. Even if you are super rich and you have lands, many vehicles, you are part of a big and well trained group and you own a freaking bunker in the middle of nowhere, etc, etc… Even in that case it might just buy you some extra time, at most. But no one can survive a long term SHTF situation. Why? Because humanity would simply die. We are not designed to go back and start all over again. The suicide rate of the most necessary, smart and sensible people (scientist, doctors, engineers, etc) would be astronomical also. So the only SHTF situation we could survive might be some kind of riots or civil unrest at most. That’s all.

    I think, that out of those three rifles the G3 is superior. Here in Germany surplus magazines made from aluminum cost about 3€=4$ each. You don’t need to carry thousands of rounds. I have a .22lr in an Ar-15 platform. But I would carry my regular ar and 12 gauge and also my .22 all at the same time. My plate carrier could hold 10 magazines (10 rounders) more if I push it. I could hold 50 plus shotgun rounds in my shotgun sling and large pouch. And side pouches could hold 15 12 round .22lr mags. My leg harness could hold a few more of each caliber rounds. I would also keep loaded magazines in my backpack. Now if we ran into each other (considering you have the same training as me) and you had everything you just mentioned. I would win. It might seem like a lot of weight but I carry most likely more than that at work every day. And not to mention if I was in a life or death situation I would carry all that no problem.

      Theodore Heckler and Edmund Koch came from Mauser and after WWII, Germany could not produce any firearms so they took their roller locking design to Spain and CETME. in the 1950s when Germany was allowed to produce firearms, they formed HK and created their G3 rifle. The CETME is a Spanish G3.
      I wanted a FN FAL PARA but the have become unicorns and thr FN SCAR H is basically the latest main battle rifle to succeed the FAL. with the folding stock thr SCAR is very similar to thr famed FAL PARA.

    • @ms.annthrope415
      @ms.annthrope415 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The CETME being a full size rifle chambered for a full powered cartridge is a Main Battle Rifle, MBR. Hk G3, FN FAL, Springfield M1A/M14 are all Main Battle Rifles. An assault rifle as defined by US DoD and Jane's Infantry Weapons is a compact rifle firing an intermediate caliber and capable if selected fire operation. M16, AK47, Galil, SIG 550 are assault rifles.

    Interesting stuff but it all seems directed to the thought of at some stage having an extended fire fight. My belief which is backed up by police reports is that fire fights don't happen outside the theatre of war or police sieges. Even in a SHTF situation reliability is more than likely going to be more important than any other factor and I personally would aim towards that than round capacity. For me a large calibre revolver, shotgun and bolt action hunting rifle would cover my most likely needs.

      Depends a bit on what kind of shtf you are going through. If you are a Boer farmer in SA right now the standard concern is have a large gang of armed criminals come to your remote property with cell signal jammers and torture, rape, and murder your family. So high capacity mags are probably a big deal in that kind of situation, better than revolvers and bolt actions if you have a lot of criminals you might need to put down.

    Good video as always! And I agree with what was presented here. I would only add the task is survival, not war, there is a difference and know and prepare for your particular environment. In any event, you can not go wrong with what was presented here.

    If things go to hell. And I can have only one gun. It would have to be a rifle. Lots of other people are going to armed. What is the first thing you do in combat if your TO weapon is a pistol? Get your hands on a rifle. If I have to fight I want a rifle period.

    2. AR15 in 5.56 with 18" barrel, then a 300blk 9.5" upper with a suppressor.

      this is the best list I've seen. You could carry everything you need on your person, digest any ammo you came across. 300blk ammo would be tricky but worth it. 30 cal pills and pistol powder and you can reload them. why don't you make a video.

      Joe Schmoe Yeah man, i know the 300 BlackOut... Here in Italy only "illegal hunters" use it... I have not direct experience reloading it but i gave an eye to some manuals and compared the powders used for it with those used for the 9Para... I found that AT THE BOTTOM of the 9Para there is the N105 (i guess but i am not sure) that can be close with the N110 used in the 300Blackout... Anyway... For example: i reload 9IMI (pretty close with 9Para) using N340, that A LOT MORE FASTER than the N105 (if you try to use the N340 in a 5,56... The barrel will explode BADLY and you probably will end bad too).
      I repeat - I DO NOT HAVE DIRECT EXPERIENCE RELOADING THE 300Blackout - but giving a quick reading to the manuals, SEEM TO ME that if you use a "pistol caliber powder" to reload it... IT WILL GO BOOM!!! Or... If you will use a powder good for the 300blackout in "a pistol caliber" it WILL BE "LIKE A FART".
      I can be wrong... I will ask to someone with more reloading experience than me asap anyway... Just curious...

      @MrKadidle51 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +grappolidipalma I could be wrong as well, but I think people regularly use magnum powder for the subsonic 300. I have never reloaded it either.

    Russian Imports have NOT stopped with the 7.62x39. Only the 7N6 Variant of the 5.45x39 was barred from import. Plenty of ammo is coming from the Ukraine and I can get 1080 rounds of Red Army Standard 7.62x39 123 gr FMJ Made in Ukraine for 280 dollars.

      I think he meant the surplus had stopped. The old Russian 7.62x39mm got banned and in 90s and now so has the 5.45x39. Newly made is still available, just not as affordable.

    • @Z0mb3hHunt3r

      Correct on that. But people usually call the commercial stuff "Surplus". I was around back in the 90s and remember it clearly. Atleast today we learned very quickly when it happened.

    If you live in Connecticut your only option is a stock SKS, M1 Garand or Ruger mini 14 with 10 round mags. For the money the SKS with stripper clips is the better option. Who wants to buy a bunch of expensive 10 round Ruger mini 14 mags when stripper clips cost like 10 cents. The M1 Garand is nice, but not cheap like an SKS

      That was banned by name. Not by feature. Jonathan Cain Like I said it was banned by name NOT BY FEATURE. That along with this phrase in the law " or copies or duplicates thereof WITH THE CAPABILITY OF ANY SUCH RIFLES " That means the sporterized version is banned. Go ahead and call up any gun store tomorrow and ask them if they can sell you one. Their answer will be NO. If you already have one and you didn't register it it's a felony if you get caught. I suggest you be very careful.

    • @Prepare2Survive
      @Prepare2Survive 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jonathan Cain
      The actual law ( listed above in another comment ) specifically names " IZHMASH Saiga AK " which is a sporterized AK. Therefore it's banned. It's very easy to understand once you realize they banned some guns by feature and others by name. In this case it was banned by name. Go ahead and call any local gun store and ask them if you can buy one and then come back and tell me what they say. I'm 100% sure they'll say NO.

    • @Prepare2Survive
      @Prepare2Survive 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jonathan Cain
      Yes, I live in CT. The IZ-132 is the same thing as the IZHMASH Saiga AK and even if it's just slightly different it's still banned because it meets the definition of " copies or duplicates thereof WITH THE CAPABILITY OF ANY SUCH RIFLES "
      You can solve your whole misunderstanding of the law by just calling a few local gun stores and asking them if it's legal for you to buy one of those in CT.

    • @Prepare2Survive
      @Prepare2Survive 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jonathan Cain
      Oh, so you actually called a store and asked them if they can sell them to CT residents ? What store can I buy one at ? I want to call them myself.
      Just so you know an FFL can buy and ship anything they want to any state they want, but that doesn't mean that FFL can sell them to the residents of that state. Many FFL dealers buy things so they can sell them online to other states where they are legal for those residents. They do stuff like that if they know they're going to make a profit acting as the middle man.

      @@sootch00 with lot's of practice you can shoot that far.....but think about who you are talking too, a person who is unwilling to spend a reasonable amount of money for their safety will NOT go and train correctly....so what's the point of owning a gun that you can't shoot?
      long range shooting takes practice and a skill level that a lot of people just can't grasp.....weapon matters not
      I can shoot better grouping with my recurve at 50 yards than most people can with a rifle.....why, because I shoot all the time
