Make it a combo. Ruger 10/22 and 9mm pistol when small game hunting is primary and self-defense is secondary. AR15 and 22lr pistol when self-defense is primary and small game hunting is secondary.

Where do you find all this wild game? I'm farther north than Boise but I've day-hiked a lot in the southern panhandle and I went out well beyond trailheads and I saw one cow moose with calf and one elk which was within a mile of civilization. I see game around residences but not in the back country. I see some black bear signs but only in canyon areas. I have lots of ground squirrels and see occasional tree squirrels and lots of deer, near my residence, but I can see houses from parts of my property. If the grid went down there would be little refrigeration so how would people keep what they shot. In that case cattle will be shot, also, but same problem--refrigeration. And though it may be possible to dry meat over a woodstove when it's cold, I don't see people spending time in the summer drying meat. You can pressure can it in the winter. The supressor is a good idea but for me at 78, it would take awhile to get ATF approval, so I'd probably wing it with the time I had. You definitely have good knowledge on those firearms.
Is packing into the back country to survive plausible? Dangerous country.
      Thanks for your presentation.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one that keeps a .22lr pistol for small game hunting. I used to keep a ruger mkIV but I love the taurus tx22 competition. It's incredibly accurate and light and seems to have less failures than the ruger.

Agreed! I'm a firearms instructor & bought a standard TX22 after the start of this ammo shortage to practice with and use for classes, it's been an awesome little performer. Superbly accurate and extremely reliable! Only time I've had ANY malfunctions has been when using lubed/waxed ammo that I didn't clean off well enough. Best semi-auto 22lr pistol on the market currently, imo.

Great to see you guys giving the .22LR some love - it is still a very useful cartridge, and everyone should own at least one (if not several) options chambered in it. Love my T/CR22 with a Magpul Hunter stock and Primary Arms SLX RDS. It's so damn accurate it feels like cheating on squirrels.

I chose to go with an AR and a CMMG .22 conversion kit. The kit is compact, lightweight, and has worked reliably for the many years that I've owned it. In my rifle, I am able to keep all shots within the size of squirrels head easily out to 50yds using the conversion kit. Separating the upper from the lower allows storage of rifle in a larger backpack, and the ubiquity of the AR platform means that accessories are abundant, such as optics, furniture, slings, and even suppressors. And by popping the rear pin, I can put the 5.56 bcg back in, slap in a magazine, and I have a rifle that is capable of security duty as well as taking medium sized game.

I think for a true survival scenario, with the context of grabbing some gear and setting out on foot, the 22lr pistol being smaller, lighter, and being immediately accessible on the hip makes it the superior choice to a 22lr rifle. If you're in a scenario like I'm referring to then you're almost certainly not going to be taking more than one long-arm; pretty much anyone who thinks they will have two rifles slung over their shoulder hasn't marched a few miles through woods with this hypothetic setup. A 22lr rifle that stows away in the backpack isn't immediately accessible if game is spotted and the rifle isn't already out and deployed, and if game is spotted then any primary long gun (think AR15) would have to be slung aside or set down to then utilize the 22lr rifle. Not to mention, the amount of space taken up by a 22lr rifle in a pack is quite a lot, and every pound dropped by going to a pistol instead of a rifle can be better utilized by brining different gear (rope, tinder, food, just having your total pack be lighter and therefore save on calories being burned, etc).

Modified Ruger 1022 is so easy to take apart and break down and fit into a tiny backpack. Unbelievably accurate for a long range shooting. I’ve been deer hunting with them since I was a kid. I love it the cheapest most effective rifle I own. I would choose that all day long. Also a break action 556 is pretty slick too. But I can bring 10,000 rounds at 22 without it being a big deal. I keep 10,000 rounds and a 1022 broken down and stowed away hidden in my truck at all times. That’s hypothetically 10,000 squirrels

I’ve been rocking a scoped Ruger Mark III target pistol with the 5.5 barrel and I can smack squirrels out of trees out to 100 yards pretty consistently. It doesn’t weight much less than my scoped Mossberg 702 plinkster, but smaller package and easier to chase the hounds with.

My personal favorite .22 is the S&W Model 34 or 63 or variants. They’re not necessarily harder to shoot then a semi because both require training. I have speedloaders for mine, but revolvers are not dependent on any loading devices and are not subject to mag malfunctions. True, any firearm, including revolvers can suffer mechanical problems, but the .22 revolver is a viable choice. The Ruger MK series and Brownings are also excellent choices if one chooses a semi auto. The 10/22 is as versatile to the shooting community as the AR and should be in everyone’s collection - which may be the goal for many because they’re seldom found on the shelves anymore. The little Ruger American .22 bolt gun with a decent scope is a tack driver out of the box and a worthy consideration. I’m seriously considering a Winchester Wildcat .22 carbine because they are built to take 10/22 mags and come with features that must be added to a 10/22.

I have one of the Tactical conversions for my Glock 19.
It functions fine with quality ammo. When using some of the bulk pack (Winchester white box) I do get malfunctions.
It is one of those things that is good in concept, but in reality, it will never be as good as just putting a dedicated .22 in your bag. Knowing what I know now, I would not buy it again. Especially at today's prices.
I paid about $200'ish for mine (give or take - don't really recall) - They sell for over $500 from the company - not sure about 3rd party sellers. At $500, I would buy a S&W 317 kit gun revolver. Super light and very solid bag guns. (I have the short barrel one and would like to get the 3" one)

I've done a lot of thinking about this.. for me it's the 22 pistol. Exterior ballistics and ammo quality on that chambering being what they are, even with a nice 10/22 it's just taking pot shots at anything past about 100m. Plus, realistic engagement ranges for small game in my area are more like 10-25m, prime territory for the Mark IV. Paired with a 308 rifle, the 22 pistol seems ideal for wilderness survival. Only issue is two legged mammals...

I feel the extra velocity isn't worth the squeeze so I would advise .22lr pistol. Sure you lose some range capability but I'm not shooting squirrels/rabbits in a survival situation much further than 25 yards so it's a moot point. It also gives me much more room in my pack for other stuff. Suppressed .22lr is the way. 👍

Those are very nice looking rifles but expensive. A standard 10-22 rifle can be converted to a take down using a $125 Promag Archangel QBD stock. It works, is light and is accurate. 12 gauge shotguns are great but heavy and is it the best choice for a squirrel or quail. Ammo is 10 rounds to the pound. 20 gauge is a bit lighter. If a shotgun is a must consider 410 which is about 20 rounds to the pound plus the gun is considerably lighter. 410 4 pellet 000 buck is a good defense load. Still hard to beat 137 rounds of 22lr to the pound. 37 rounds to the pound for 9mm and 5.56x45. Weight matters.

If we're talking best .22 "survival" firearms, then I would chose a Ruger Super Single Six Convertible .22s-l-lr / .22wmr. with a 9.50" barrel for the following reasons:
1: It can fire .22 short, .22 long, .22 long rifle cartridges , as well as specialty cartridges like the Aguila Colibri and Super Colibri, and the #12 .22lr shot-shells. And it can also fire .22mwr ( Winchester Magnum Rimfire) cartridges. So if you end up having to scrounge for ammunition, you'll have more of a change of finding ammunition for your firearm.
2: It's small enough to be carried in a shoulder holster under your shirt or coat, or inside a rucksack or backpack, keeping it out of sight.
3: The 9.50" barrel gives you a longer sight radius than normal size .22 handguns, making it easier to hit what you're aiming for.
4: The Ruger Super Single Six Convertible is going to function just fine no matter that .22lr brand or brand variant you use. It's not "ammo sensitive".
5: It's also easy to clean and maintain.

I have a Tactical Solutions X-Ring VR 10/22 takedown. I've fashioned a rail on to the barrel with a long eye relief scope. 100 yards consistently hitting a 3" bullseye and a ¾" bullseye at 50 yards. Besides, the accuracy and, in my opinion, the MOST IMPORTANT is the increased reliability over an OEM Ruger 10/22 takedown. While some may question the much higher price tag than an OEM Ruger. My opinion is the old "buy once, cry once" when it comes to survival equipment. If a piece of survival equipment is twice the price as its cheaper counterparts, but the reliability is more than double of the cheaper counterparts, then I see that as a win, and money well spent.

Personally my favorite is a 20ga in the form of the discontinued H&R 20ga Tamer and my old Winchester model 12 20ga pump. The model 12 takes down in half and I've got an canvas case and garbage bag to attach it to my pack. That little 20ga pump can do it on the wing or slug down game. One thing you didn't mention is for a bug out scenario, you can literally carry 10,000 rounds of 22 ammo very easily. Also, you can kill a deer with a 22 if in a situation of starvation versus living. So a 22 is a awesome survival gun!

Rabbits and squirrels are a much better bet, hunting deer or any big game with .22lr is a pipe dream. For 1 you'd have too get pretty close and their likely too be long gone once they catch your smell. Small game hunting is the way.

Amen. Double the potential power and/or range than .22lr. Ammo is barely larger or heavier, generally more reliable in ignition. Go with a bolt, no need to have auto cycling actions causing problems.

More than likely a great options, but also much more likely to be difficult to fix a jam, keep debris out, and not so easy to take-down. Simplicity is everything in a wilderness situation.

Side note: if you are not familiar with Super Calibri ammo it only uses the primer for power, technically for use in revolvers due to shorter barrels (safety issue) but I’ve never had an issue. I practice on ground squirrels and nobody knows.

Ruger 10/22 16 inch barrel no fake spud sights hogue stock. 10/22 no dak spud sights folding stock. Cz 452 scout very accurate. I shoot wolf target ammo and take the hyper vel ammo for more of a protection role. Looked at getting a 8 inch ruger pistol which would be less weight and more packable. Has anyone ever used the ruger challenger? I had the m6 scout and the tps combo ,22/410. They just never gave good results for me past 15 yards

In what world is a (general) semi-auto easier to shoot than a (general) revolver? There's a heap of downsides to semi-autos for "survival" by comparison.

  • @User-gs1dk

I feel like people carry out a lot of imaginary movie survival scenarios or attribute non-survival experiences as what a realistic survival scenario is like. People are talking scenarios that are more like intentional camping or backpacking trips. You going out on a 30mi hike deciding what you want to carry along isn't a survival scenario.
For actual survival I feel like this question has pretty well been answered. I grew up in a poor rural farming area with grandparents who were adults during the great depression. People who actually hunted to provide for themselves didn't use pistols. There is a reason when you look at the family gun collections of rural farm families who aren't gun collectors but have guns as tools you will find almost exclusively long guns with maybe a pistol here and there just to pop snakes when you're out and about tending animals. But when serious matters are happening on the farm and something needs to be dispatched or hunted no one ever grabbed a pistol. You're grabbing the long gun resting in the closet by the door. In fact my grandfather who was also a WW2 vet didn't own a single pistol himself and that wasn't uncommon.
People saying "in a survival scenario I'll be shooting within 25 yards". No you won't....not if you're hungry and the only game you can get close to is 50 yards away. You're saying that because you're wanting to justify the pistol. Or you could just use the vastly superior rifle and not be limited to such ranges.
.22lr pistols have their place but if you told me I've only got one gun to take me through the rest of my life to provide for me then hand me that Ruger 10/22 every single time.
