Muzzle Energy = 124 FT/LBS
Muzzle Velocity = 1250 FPS
Energy @ 300 Yard Target = ~54 FT/LBS
Velocity @ 300 Yard Target = ~825 FPS
Energy @ 25 Yard Target = ~111 FT/LBS
Velocity @ 25 Yard Target = ~1179 FPS
Penetration @ 300 Yard = 11.25"
Penetration @ 25 Yard = 11.375"

I have been a paramedic for over 26 years and have seen dozens of people shot with all kinds of rounds many of which are 22s. I have seen many one or two shot kills with the 22 and everyone that was shot with a 22 and lived did not want to get shot again. My observations! Worth what you paid for it!
I'm glad to listen to a Paramedic who isn't talking down on the .22LR for once...although, funnily, all of the ones I've met who DID ended up either fired or quitting lol. Twenty years ago people could still use the hearsay attitude akin to "I seen a guy whoop another guys ass after gettin' shawt" or "It just don't have no power past a hunderd yards." These videos are documented PROOF that this kind of conjecture is utter bullshit. I consider the .22LR to be the MOST important firearm ANYONE could have in a truly terrible shtf/wrol situation...and it's the backbone of any plinker or varminter's collection regardless of their attitude on how it works on larger (sometimes two-legged) critters.

@@theghost7277 True but, honestly, the same can be said for virtually every decent caliber on the market, .45 ACP probably being the least due to the intrinsic limitations of the shell itself.
Plus it's surprising how few people realize that common hollow-point usage is a relatively new thing. Well into the 70's stuff like the Charter Arms revolvers in .38 and .44 special were pretty common place; as was using round nose, cast lead that had a horrible tendency to deflect or kinda "slide" around bone rather than pierce it.

Great vid! I had a coyote waking us up at dawn 3 days in a row. Sat on the cliffs edge & drove our dog nuts. I am NOT a morning person. With my short bbl Henry AR7 with a cheap mil dot scope i practiced the second day figuring drop. ( drop was a LOT shooting uphill) Range 600 yards. 3rd day i was up & waiting on that yote. He never knew what hit him. Center punched him through the sternam & right into his heart. Pitched face foreward right off his sitting spot on the cliff. Rest of pack took off like rockets & i emptied the mag & on the last shot hit the last yote going over the hill right up the Texas heart shot. Found that slug in his heart also. Neither went through the heart but Into it. Pure dumb luck with the 2nd yote. Neither slug was deformed but still did the job. Love thoes CCI Mini mags!! Laser ranged the distance later. 600 on the first & just a tad over 800 on the 2nd yote. Ive put more food on the table with my 22s than all the other rifles combined. Head/ ear shots. Deer/ moose & bear not counting the small game which i cant count. Got the idea as a teen in the Gila forests in New Mexico. Found lots of old dry deer skulls with a 22 slug still inside them from the mexican poachers kills. Thoes boys are VERY GOOD shooters/ hunters.
I just found your channel . The .22LR is probably the most under rated load in the world. Easy to shoot, no recoil to speak of and quite deadly with good shot placement.
So, to conclude, the. 22 LR is lethal farther out than you can accurately hit with it.
Rick Shaw With a 50 yard zero, the .22 will drop about 5 inches at 100 yards. I think it's something like 8 feet, at 300 yards. I'd have to recheck that, but it's something crazy like that. I do know this... A 20 yard zero will have you hitting zero at 20, 1/2" high at 40, and zero again at 60. So, in other words, the bullet has already started dropping at only 40.1 yards, because 40 yards is it's apex. Pretty wild......
Rick Shaw The 22 lr will only really penetrate someone’s skull if it’s a dead on angle with the skull. If you were to hit their dome at a slight angle the 22lr might bounce off and the attacker can still be in the fight. The only guarantee 1 shot headshot is a .308 between the eyes.
@@jamiesloan5902 depends on the round. i used to shoot meadowlarks at 100 yards with a .22 using stingers. never a holdover and the scope was sighted in at 50 yards with standard ammo.

Squidward Tentacles False. Human skulls are no thicker than deer skulls, and .22LR has taken millions of them (albeit illegally) with a single headshot. I assure you they weren't all at 90 degrees, haha! Oh, and there are literally dozens (maybe hundreds) of calibers that are more powerful than .308, and even more that are less powerful than .308, that are guaranteed kills with a headshot. Ridiculous...
I grew up on a farm in Alberta Canada, when we butchered our own beef to eat, my dad would take the 22 long rifle out, pop a shot between the eyes of the steer, down it went, every single time, no second shot was ever needed. This was done at point blank range of course, inside the barn. If you know what your doing, a 22 long rifle will drop you deader then a door nail.

My buddy in Salmon Arm BC shot a pig he had raised with a 22lr rifle. It freaked the fuvk out. Wrecked a bunch of shit, and scared the fuvk out of him and friend that was there to butcher it. He only had one round in the rifle. When I heard about it I laughed because the guy owned a 44 Magnum! LOL
the slower vel of the 300yrd shot stopped the bullet from expanding which then allowed it to penetrate at the same depth as the expanded 25yrd shot.
Right. So if you see any value in the expansion of the hollowpoint, or the traumatic transfer of energy to the target, you understand that penetration isn't everything.

Back when I started shooting back in the mid 1960's I was taught the .22 rimfire was leathal out to one mile.
Just as it says on every box of .22 rimfire I've ever seen.
My brother got hit with a .22 in the leg. Remington thunderbolt to be exact. The shot was fired from 1.25 miles, it had enough energy to be lethal.
My grandfather taught me that when I was a kid. I'm only 32.
According to wikipedia .22 lr max range is 2000 yards. That does not mean it does not drop after 200-300 yds if you hold the rifle horizontally...
Not to argue with you, but my Henry 22lr with minimags can reach out to about 800 yds, course if i stood on a mountain and shot downward I'm sure the round could go quite a ways but shooting up a mountain, 800 yds.
@Bill Randall According to what I read in Ernie Lindt's book "The Book of Trick and Fancy Shooting" a Winchester ballistician showed him a table of maximum range figures for different caliber projectiles and though I don't recall off the bat what the 22's max was I remember the figure for .38 Special 158gn bullet(no other dimensions known) was 1800 yds. I would wager the 22 would be somewhat longer but who knows. I would never guess a 38 slug would be capable of such a feat! Projectiles must be fired from arms at an angle of 25 to 30 degrees declination to the horizon(doubtless due to the parabolic arc of bullet trajectory).

The 22lr is such a great little round. Amazed to see it mushroom to the size of .380 (25 yds) @ 4:52 mark in the video. That's impressive.
Rafael S. I've got a huge water tank that I use to test hollow point expansion, with different rounds. I've had as much as .40", out of a 36g Mini-Mag. That's pretty impressive! People somehow don't think about the speed of a .22 bullet essentially being just as fast as a 9mm bullet. That helps put things into perspective...lol
If u had to take a gun out of my collection for survival situation. I would definitely take the .22lr. It's lethal with the right shot placement and ammunition is light weight and could carry thousands of rounds. Great little gun.
I've always thought that. It wouldn't be difficult to carry 2000 22 bullets in a rucksack. Lethal on most things to over a 100 yards, and nearly silent with a sound suppressor, using subsonic ammunition.

@@andywilson8698 - my grandfather swears that in the 1930's he exclusively used .22 for deer and I've seen some of the old skulls that were out behind the barn and I have his Savage mod 23A and it's still a tack driver. open sights on a rest at 100 I can do 1 1/2 - 1 3/4 all day long. - (but I use .308 or .30WCF) if I could have only 1 rifle it would have to be a .22
Depends upon what *kind* of "survival" and the locale and conditions... But for what I think you're talking about, .22 WMR is my choice, with .22lr 2nd place.

When I first entered the handgun world in earnest in 2007 I was all about the .45 acp in a 1911 platform. Then I started experimenting with 9 mm. Then I discovered the .357 magnum!!! Then I purchased a 1911-22 and the handgun .22 bug bit me.In 2019 there is ALL kinds of .22 LR bullets out there and they are getting pretty serious. I also love shooting my 10/22 and Thompson center clone, not to mention my recent Mark III purchase!!!!!!!Great Video and thank you for contributing to the gun community.

MrNedsaabdickerson I do 90% of my training with a Taurus TX-22, and a DelTon AR15, using a CMMG .22 conversion kit. I go through at least 500 rounds a week, on my DIY range. The good ol' 22 has saved me thousands of dollars, and allowed me to train 3-4 days a week to work on my gun handling skills. Not only are these 2 platforms great for training, they would also make me feel like I was "well armed" in a lethal confrontation. .22lr is no joke...

I personally know a gentleman who was unfortunate enough to have his home invaded by 6 thugs. He had a ruger 10-22 with the old-school butlercreek teardrop magazine and ended up killing 3 of them in his house and a fourth perp died in the hospital...

@cmiller8492 the butler creek mags were inherently more reliable design wise but it's quite bulky compared to the btx25 and is ugly as sin...

The military stats explain that it takes 39 ft lbs. To be a lethal shot...meaning it must pierce a half inch pine board...iraqveteran8888 does a vid on here showing that lethal penetration and thru the half inch pine board at 440yds with a 22lr

Yes and no if you get at 177 caliber pellet at a thousand feet per second it hits with 13 lb and it can penetrate through an inch and half of Pine bored I know this for real so the military made a little mistake
My crane operator got shot in the ass in Vietnam by a 30 cal bullet. It didn't even penetrate the skin. Just left a bruise. He got a Purple Heart for it though!

Yes and no. 22lr is awesome in a case that you can carry lots of rounds and it is dirt cheap. It is bad in a case that it is not as powerful as most military main rifle rounds. There are reasons why the military don't chambered their main rifle in 22lr

I truly believe that a .22lr rifle should be to first firearm anybody should buy. It's fun to shoot and you can plink all day long without breaking the bank. It's light to carry when out hunting and powerful enough to be use for home defence. It's the ultimate utilitarian gun.
Mine was passed down to me from my older brother! The old Nylon 66 from 1990.. one of the last made before they stopped making them.

yeah i'm in france and just got my license first rifle I bought a month ago is a CZ 457 premium in 22mag and I just ordered a 22lr barrel in order be able to shoot more discretly with my suppressor since we can have them easily here, toped with a hawke frontier ffp, great scope that I could use for long range with a bigger caliber in the future if I want... Great rifle those CZ and the versatility between 22lr for cheap plinking and 22mag for survival/defense I think is a great package I can recommend !
My parents bought me a bolt action

The 22lr is just an amazing round for how it has developed in the last 15 years or so. The velocitor speed bullets with the 40 grain hollow is just plain scary as a backup round to a 9 40 or 45, Just the 22 alone without the bigger guns will put most people down and many accidental headshots with not so great 22 ammo on record with homicide investigators wind up deadly or producing a brain damaged person.

To close the loop on related .22 cal. ballistic questions, perhaps another video with a short barrelled .22 revolver and a 6" barrelled .22 revolver, and then one comparing say a .22 semi-auto pocket pistol vs. a .22 semi-auto full sized pistol such as a Ruger Mark ll or Mark lll, for example
This would compare bullet velocity and penetration among shorter vs. longer barrelled handguns, and gas loss from a revolver cylinder/barrel gap vs. semi-auto. Just an idea, but I'd be very interested in seeing the results!

Great video for all those underestimating the 22lr. It's my favorite Caliber for many many reasons.
I don't know why, but it's always been obvious to me of the lethality/SD value that a .22lr has. I dunno why people don't see it. And for the power the .22lr lacks in power compared to a larger caliber, it makes up for in pump-a-buncha-rounds-in-your-ass-ability.
There are people that call the 5.56x45 under powered. So there will definitely be people calling the .22lr under powered

peptobismolsaves1 #1 Buckshot is 40 grains, same as the average 22lr bullet, and in some 12 gauge shotgun loads, around 1350 FPS, in and around the same velocity as the 22lr, meaning they are very similar in terms of weight, velocity, and muzzle energy, with the buckshot edging out in larger diameter for wound channel against the superior ballistic coeffecient of the 22lr. The big difference? The 12 gauge shotgun can throw 12 of those pellets with just one pull of the trigger, while your "pump-a-buncha-rounds" 22lr only throws one projectile of per trigger pull. The shotgun blast is more effective in the first place, considering the pellets of one load hit as one, vastly and completely superior to the one hit at a time bullets, but also a shotgun in capable hands will throw more projectiles of similar size, weight, and velocity than your little squirrel gun could hope or dream of on its best day.
the 22lr does not create hydrostatic shock, nor does it do more than punch little .22 holes that are not very effective into the body. There are pistols and carbines out there in pistol calibers that can offer the same controlled fire with far superior lethality. The shotgun can easily outperform the .22lr in any configuration or any firearm in that caliber.

I've taken coyotes with CCI Stingers and it never ceases to amaze me how they can shut them down like right now. Such a high velocity for such a light bullet they basically explode on impact with the skull and about a half dozen fragments go in all directions. It's a shame they are so hard to find these days, the ones I have I'm hanging onto until supplies can be replenished.

Many moons ago back in the day my grandad used .22 for hunting things that should be only shot with larger rounds, but he said a well placed shot of a .22 would still bring the meat home.

I love stretching 22 out to 200 and 300 yards. It's a nice little challenge and doesn't require a huge range.
Shane Collins I enjoy it, too. I also run a lot of "drills" with my .22's. Great way to practice gun handling skills, without breaking the bank. I use a Taurus TX-22(outstanding little pistol), and a CMMG .22 conversion kit, in my AR-15. Both are near 100% reliable.

I know for certain that a 22lr will turn off a groundhog at 250 yards.
If you lob the bullet in like an artillery shell. The mighty .22LR drops between 70 and 100 inches at 250 yards, depending on velocity.

People act like a 22 LR is a toy round. Its a shard of metal moving relatively the speed of sound. Human skin is designed to protect from bull shit UV rays and (for those fairer skinned people) often fails to do even that. 22LR will take a person out!

@@robertayoder2063 Re-read his comment, he basically said anything other than a head shot won't be an immediate cessation of an attack, which was the point. US military and law enforcement have multiple incidents on record where a specific caliber wasn't enough to put down their targets and they wound up later switching to higher powered ammunition. From the FBI Miami Dade incident in the 80's all the way back to the US military in the Spanish American war. If the military and cops wound up having problems with rounds that were BIGGER than 22lr, why would some people laugh off the concern over stopping power of 22lr? It's not an illegitimate concern. I'm not bashing the 22 at all, it's a valuable and proven round, it can kill, it's extremely utilitarian and even more importantly it may very damn well be my favorite (and not just because of price and current availability)... but let's call a spade a spade here.

Had a friend that was shot with a 22LR at a little over 200 yards in the leg. It was enough to break the bone into and fully exit. The 22LR is not the best self-defense for sure. That being said it still can be very effective at distance.

Browning BPR are great 22's as well in the mountains. By far my favorite riffle is the 10/22
MtMan Maxx I bought a brand new Ruger 10/22 about 2 years ago. It's literally the crappiest gun that I own. It would only function with CCI Velocitors, when I first bought it. I've pretty much had to modify everything on it, to get it to function halfway reliably. I even chamfered the bolt, among other things. And.... It's so inaccurate that I ended up removing the scope, and just putting a cheap red dot on it. It struggled to shoot 6" groups, at 50 yards. Every other .22 that I own shoots at least quarter size groups. I also bought a new Ruger LCR in 22mag. It has a light strike about every 3-4 rounds(the 10/22 also had light strike issues). I, personally DO NOT understand the "hype" of the 10/22. I think it's a joke for a firearm. Ruger has went to the sewer in the last few years, as far as quality, and reliability. I'll NEVER buy another Ruger, as long as I live. "Present day" Taurus has EASILY replaced Ruger at the top of my list for being the best "bang for your buck" firearm. I own 2 Rugers. Both JUNK. I own 4 Taurus's. All 4 amazing, and reliable. But hey... To each his own.......

Shot a private shoot with a pro that invested hundreds in his competition rifle using my stock 10-22 with only a scope and bipod added. It out shot his several hundred dollar rifle. Yeah, I'll keep my 10-22. Just wish it were legal to hunt with.

Thank you for proving something beyond a shadow of a doubt that I have believed and said all along.
Incredibly efficient and versatile cartridge that is constantly underestimated. If I had to pick one of my guns to survive , it would be my Nylon 66 , which also happens to be a tack-driver despite being bendy.

I had a nylon 66 about 45 years ago and as I recall it too was one heqq of a tack driving little rifle.

I have to say AWESOME VIDEO ! Unbelievable performance of the 22 LR the idea of using my 22 AR for home defense has crossed my mind, is dependable, never jams and I am extremely accurate with it. As I can shoot an eye ball out....LOL I am looking forward for more videos.

I still have 17 or 18 50 rd. boxes of Montgomery Ward 36gr 22lr from my high school rifle team days in ‘65-‘66 in my ammo cases. I shot a box through my new 10/22 carbine to zero in my scope. After zeroing at 100 yds, 22 rds in an 1.5 in circle. No misfires out of 50. Still have the $.29 per box price stickers on them.
My brother shot a drum with his 38special revolver (6meters) which did not penetrate through, i there after shot it with subsonic .22 round about 50meters and it penetrated through and made a dent on the other side..

A Bersa Thunder 22lr if one of my two concealed carry guns. At 15 or 20 feet, it will stop an attacker cold if shot between the eyes.
I still think that the CCI Stingers are my favorites :)
I also wanna say that I bought a $99 Savage .22lr Semi Auto model 62 or 64 & it's a great rifle for such a low price,... Easily hit a 5" x 5" plate @ 100 yrds with the factory open sights :)

That's why it used to say "Dangerous within 1 Mile" on the boxes. The .22rf is a nasty little round and never to be under estimated.....It's no toy....

Most boxes still do say that, from what I see. That was the very first thing my dad taught me when he taught me shooting with his old Mossberg - .22 is no joke, treat it with respect.

Underrated...NO... it is the number one choice for paid assigns for over 40 years...preferably coming from a Ruger semi-auto with a Bull barrel....both accurate and deadly...also reliable and quiet.

The .22 rimfire has to be the most fun firearm to use as well as being incredibly cost effective. My Remington semi auto although many years old remains my favourite fun rifle of all.

.22 is not an ideal defensive round, but anyone who says they aren't lethal is stupid, plain and simple. I was on a murder jury in the 90's where a guy was shot at close range with a 22 revolver. The round went in right under his left nipple, went through the lung, barely nicked the bottom of his heart, went through his liver and stopped in his pancreas or a kidney IIRC. He ran a few feet and fell DRT.
If I'm not mistaken, this test is about what a .22 LR mini mag can do. Dead is dead, not what is ideal. Many would say grab a 12 ga. shotgun with 00, but that's not what this video is about. Try to stay focused
Precisely, Johan. In fact, from what I understand the .22 pistol is THE weapon of choice for the sort of hit man who does his (or her) work "up close and personal." It's not particularly loud (although it's still quite a firecracker if you don't have any sort of suppressor on it), and the short-range accuracy can't be beat. Also, when fired into a skull, the rounds have the reputation of sort of "playing pinball" inside the head, so to speak. They walk quietly up behind someone, fire into the back of the head, and it's all over.
And of course at 1,200 ~ 1,400+ FPH, .22 rounds are leaving muzzles at more than TWICE the speed of many much larger rounds that are generally considered more lethal, such as a .357 magnum. But as we all know, if we're engaged in "close-quarters combat," the FORCE of the .357 round (or some of the even larger rounds) is going to be far greater than that of the .22, regardless of the speed difference...
When I was in high school my chemistry teacher explained the difference between speed and force like this: He said if a speedboat slams into the dock at the Battery in Charleston (we live in SC, here) doing 100 mph, it might take out a few planks, maybe even total a car or two that might be sitting too close to the docks. But if an AIRCRAFT CARRIER C R E E P S into the docks with no brakes or reverse thrusters on at, say, 3 mph, well, it will end up somewhere in the middle of Charleston. I always remembered that example!
There's why the .357, .38., .44, .45, etc. are considered more lethal. BUT by virtue of the rounds' greater weight and the limitation of how much powder can fit in a cartridge, they also have a lower muzzle velocity, which means they'll neither go as far, nor be as accurate for as far...
So here's MY question... I'm no gun expert by a LONG SHOT (I just love to watch "Sons of Guns" on Discovery Channel). My only firearm other than a 1300 fps air rifle is a Colt .22 10-shot automatic I inherited from my grandparents I think was bought sometime in the 1950s. It still fires (I fired it tonight to celebrate the 4th, since I had no fireworks), BUT it uses .22 LR and doesn't seem to like ejecting them and re-loading the next cartridge automatically, like it's supposed to (I thought it might be jammed, so brought it inside and "gingerly" pulled back the action and the spent cartridge came out, with the new one sliding into place.
With the current DEARTH of .22 LR ammo, all I can find is Winchester Wildcat 40 grain, and I'm wondering if the rim on that is maybe just a bit too wide for that automatic to pass it through on its own (with its original ammo, since long gone, it worked fine), or if maybe I need to take it to a gunsmith, since I'm more of a gun oogler. :)
Oh, as for that "expansion" in that ballistics gel on the 300-yard shot, I know what that was -- that was A CAVITATION BUBBLE! That's pretty impressive... not sure why it doesn't happen at the closer range, but I've watched all sorts of ammo tests using ballistics gel on Mythbusters, and they discovered some of that, as well. Cavitation bubbles are supersonic (I think) and produce a lot of heat and friction, if memory serves me correctly. They're also what destroys boat propellers if they're not (is it tuned properly?) Don't hold me strictly to all of this -- been a while since I saw some of these shows. I HAVE seen the show on MANTIS SHRIMP several times, though, and those little buggers lash out so quickly (fishermen fear them for their powerful "punches") that THEY create cavitation bubbles that for mere thousandths of a second are several hundred degrees hot AND supersonic -- underwater! Way off subject, here, but I'm pretty sure that was a cavitation bubble in that 300-yard shot.

I've long been under the impression, also, that the .22 has quite often been the weapon of choice for close-quarter assassins, like people who do MOB hits, who would often walk up behind their victim, put the barrel of the .22 at the base of the skull pointing upwards and fire.
I'm pretty certain that if you do that to ANYONE at the exact soft point where the spine ends and the brain begins with the medulla oblongata it would result in not only IMMEDIATE death (as the medulla oblongata controls ALL autonomic bodily functions, such as respiration and heartbeat), and that it would also be passing through relatively soft gray-and-white matter, likely until it hit the top or front of the skull, at which point the shell may actually being to "pinball" around inside what's left of the brain. The vision I get in my mind's eye in such a scenario is of sort of "scrambled brains" after such a shot, and certainly a one-shot murder.
Of course I have NO experience with any firearms other than a cheap .22 rifle my dad bought when we were kids, which kept jamming when he took us to shoot it and he finally threw it out because he considered it unsafe, my late grandfather's .22 Colt automatic, which is the one I have loaded and hidden in the house right now, and also his double-barrelled 12-gauge Winchester shotgun -- probably a valuable antique, which he left to me and which my alcoholic brother PAWNED one day about 25 or 30 years ago so he and the full-blown lesbian he was "in love" with could buy an "8-ball" of cocaine (in which he also partook, I believe, as he'd have done ANYTHING Debbie wanted, he was so infatuated with her). I didn't even know it was missing until months later when he tried to give me a POOR IMITATION he found at another pawn shop because he was ONE DAY LATE paying his pawn loan where he pawned my ANTIQUE and it was GONE. I didn't even let him know how upset I was. I just told him quietly that it was OK, and that I didn't want that gun, that it was his. I think he turned around and sold it to buy Vodka.
Poor kid was SO bowled over by Debbie (I'm partly to blame, since I met and befriended her at college, and brought her around the house to party), that he talked my Dad into co-signing a loan for him to buy an ENGAGEMENT RING to propose to her and then (he told this story on HIMSELF) got down on ONE KNEE in front of her and one of HER GIRLFRIENDS and proposed to her, to which she laughed out loud in his face. He told her he was willing to have "a platonic marriage," he was just "in love with who she was." No dice. Jeweler wouldn't take back the ring, so he ended up trading it for a nice watch.
Poor kid ended his life at 35, stumbling around half drunk in a dark bathroom in the middle of the night, tripped, knocked himself out on the side of the toilet -- TWICE. Showed me the big bruise by his right temple the next day and I tried to get him to go to the doctor, but he said he'd "be fine, that he was made out of rubber." He started a new job the next day, where nobody knew him, but they noticed he seemed partly paralyzed on his left side. About 3 p.m. that day he suddenly groaned and fell over backwards on the floor. Never regained consciousness. IDIOT doctor in charge of the local E.R. kept arguing with me he had EPILEPSY because he was having seizures and peeing all over himself, unconscious on a gurney. I'd had childhood epilepsy and knew about it. Told him I KNEW BETTER. Took THREE HOURS until a neurologist finally came around and did a CAT SCAN and saw all the BLOOD pushing on hie brain before they did emergency surgery and drained more than a liter of blood off his brain.
Too late by then. He sat in ICU from Monday to Saturday until my folks pulled the plug. Because he "fell out" on the job, an autopsy was required. BECAUSE I felt that E.R. doctor was a negligent idiot, we considered a malpractice suit, so I got to read a copy of the autopsy report... The most telling part: "The brain is necrotic and falling apart in my hands."
ACK! He was BRAIN DEAD most of that week, lying there in ICU with machines keeping his major organs running, while HIS BRAIN ROTTED INSIDE HIS SKULL!
NEVER, EVER, EVER trust a doctor you think is an idiot if you think you know better. Had it not been that our attorney did DISCOVERY and found that he was already so far gone when he fell out at work he'd have likely died anyway, I'd have owned that E.R. doctor's house.
Sorry for the long ramble when it was supposed to be about LR .22 shells, but the subject "took me there," and with my brother's death I became an only child who is now the SOLE CAREGIVER of an invalid,250-pound 82-year-old mother, with NO support system... NO brother or sister, other family or friends to help me, as she slowly descends into Alzheimer's and drives me crazy. She "boiled eggs" the other day and let them boil dry until they EXPLODED on the stove. I pulled all the knobs off the stove controls. She was in there today, but I don't think she even noticed.
Give me strength. I have frequent fantasies about sucking on the barrel of that Colt .22 pistol and pulling the trigger!

Jeff Hayes I'm sure many people have skipped over your post because of it's length but I want you to know that I read it. You need to see a psychiatrist. Tell him/her. You have a lot of stress and you need some anxiety pills. I'm a 40% disabled vet (non PTSD). My brother just got back from Afghanistan and the VA only gave him 10% disability. Didn't even consider his PTSD. He called me one day while deployed (to tell me he loved me if he died) shortly after performing mortar operations. They had took out an enemy Taliban hut killing 6 with a "possibility" of collateral damage. The enemy began firing back and he and his team were pinned down inside a bunker. I could hear the explosions hitting the bunker, like a loud subwoofer held up to the phone. He suffers on a daily basis with anxiety. My point is, everybody suffers a little anxiety and depression. Don't let that get to you. Get some help. His psychiatrist just put him on some new meds that's helping him. Everybody has dark days. Help is out there for a reason!!
I always know 22lr is quite powerful for its made to be. But your result surprised me how clean and damaging which it can make. Thanks for sharing.

22lr has less recoil which means you can return to target faster and more accurately. I'd rather get two or three quick rounds of 22lr off than one 9mm.
Mark Tracy I'm fortunate enough to have built my own shooting range, so I get to train quite a bit. I can draw, and put 6 rounds on target, in less than 2.3secs, with my .22 training pistol. It's more like 2.6secs, with my 9mm. So yes.... Even somebody that's highly trained can STILL put rounds on target FASTER with a .22. Good point.
I'm shooting 38 grain American eagle hollow points and hitting spray paint cans at 300yds. At that distance the .22lr still has enough power to punch (entry and exit holes) completely through the full spray can causing it to explode. The .22lr would have no problem penetrating any small-medium game skull at that distance either. People constantly underestimate the .22lr and I love proving people wrong. Just because it's a small rimfire bullet doesn't mean a damn thing inside 300yds. I would attest to further distances but I've only had the footage for 300yds. I'm sure it's even more.

Hi when I joined a gun club here in Paignton,Devon, in UK we were shown inquest papers of someone being shot with a 22 lr rim fire rifle by acident the shooter was shooting up into trees at birds and some unfortunate person was shot in the back of the head eating his dinner outside a pub/beer garden it wasn't a flat shot and was elevated but still travelled 600 yards and the bullet retained 16 foot pounds of energy which was enough to instantly kill the poor soul , so yea they can be more dangerous than people think

I have a shooting competition in New Zealand called the .22 Jungle Lane where competitors regularly shoot reactive targets out to 350 yards plus. Many competitors use subsonic ammo and still achieve MoA at those distances. Good rifles, good scopes, good shooter knowledge of their equipment performance and much becomes possible. Plus, it's just fun.

@ 4:00 mins, my guess is that permanent (larger) wound cavity at 6" is from the bullet tumbling.
That bullet wouldn't have made it that far if it was tumbling going downrange !!

That would seem to explain how without expansion. On the other hand the bullet ,by appearances, seems to have tumbled and then re-righted itself nose-first again which would seem to be a one-in-a-thousand chance(?)! But who knows. Would require time-lapse photography I expect to demonstrate how that actually happened.

Back of the ear lobe on a human at 300 yards would still kill you, or anywhere on the head above the nose. If this type of ammo was to be used at anytime shot placement is key. Most people get bigger rounds because they suck at shooting or dont believe in their skills enough. Drawing faster will probably save your life and getting your hits on target will definitely raise your chances of survival. Practice with air soft. It hurts and draws out your adrenaline witch you can train to hone it.

Richard Ramirez also used a .22lr pistol in a lot of his killings. The thing is, most deaths are from pistols. The .22 is even more powerful out of a rifle.

While we are comparing war stories...I've got a .17 cal BB lodged near my lumbar spine. It punctured my intestines 6 times before stopping there. It wasn't worth taking out at the time, so they just left it in. I remember that not being a very good day.
