    Let's get into this subject.
    Fartlek training for sprinters.
    Fuck me.
You know me and my background by now - if you don't comment below and tell me why. Anyways.
You know me and my background by now - and it's rugby. I am an Elite Strength and Conditioning coach that's been around the world of Rugby either playing or coaching for a good time now. And in this time you see a lot of shit gets thrown around.
Fartlek training for rugby, for sprinters, just fartlek training, in general, gets brought up a lot - I guess because it's such a buzzword, and it's fun it's different. Fartlek roughly translates to Speed Play from Swedish. But what use does this have to us?
I discuss this in this video further and provide an alternative that I find works better in the long run for a whole host of reasons for my athletes.
Drop me a comment below and tell me your thoughts. Also, do you want a video on Extensive Tempo Running for Sprint training? Let me know your thoughts.
    Signing off.
    Coach Sam Portland.

I’m a university kinesiology & sport science professor and a sprints coach. Fartlek training is VERY helpful for sprinters who need to develop/improve lactate tolerance/threshold. A 400/800-meter sprinter, or even a 200-meter sprinter can obtain significant benefit from a well structured and occasional fartlek run for purposes of improving lactate tolerance. I agree extensive tempo is great for long sprinters (400/800). However an athlete that has a difficult time tolerating extensive tempo training due to lack of cardiovascular fitness may benefit from fartlek as a bridge to tolerating extensive tempo better.
