Now that we have the ASUS Chromebook Flip CX5 review out in the wild, it is time to turn some attention to the Flip CM5 - the all-black, AMD-powered variant that launched alongside it. There's no way to get around the comparisons between these two Chromebooks, so I'm not even going to try. The Flip CX5 and Flip CM5 share nearly everything in common apart from a paint job and the processor inside that is running the show. There's a lot to like in this package, but there is definitely reason to be hesitant, too. Let's jump in the box and take a look.

I'm a retired bookkeeper and having the num pad at the right side of the keyboard would be great! I am going to go back and watch your CX5 review because it sounds as though it's more in line with what I'm looking for. My HP X360 is getting tired and a bit slow so I plan to replace it this year, depending on how many boxes "the best buy" checks off for me.

Excellent video Robbie... as someone who owns around 20 chromebooks, I always enjoy and can relate to the excitement you share when unboxing and setting up a new chromebook! A few months ago I added the Asus CX5 and this CM5 to my collection, and you are completely correct about the Ryzen throttling while on battery. I always run Octane-2 tests on a new chromebook and my CM5 with a Ryzen 3-3250C scores consistently around 23,000 on battery and around 35,000 when plugged in.... whereas my Asus CX5 with the Intel i3-1115G4 has consistent Octane-2 scores of around 60,000, plugged in or not.
On a side note: I own some of the newest and best chromebooks from Acer, Asus, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung... and both the CX5 and CM5 have by far the best sound quality of all the chromebooks that I own... great job Asus!

@@Salsajaman I collect Chromebooks as a hobby and because I enjoy seeing how they each are designed, manufactured, and perform. I especially appreciate that I can login to any of my Chromebooks and all of my files, images, settings, and applications are updated and ready no matter how long it has been since it was last used.
I purchase these Chromebooks 'lightly used' or 'like new' off of eBay for usually 10 to 25% of what their prices were when new. I also give away as gifts many of these Chromebooks so my friends and family will discover how fun, easy, and carefree most Chromebooks are to use and own... the rest I put on display in my office and let 'Guest' use and enjoy when they visit.

      @PanamaBrian ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@riassslave8494 The cm5's Ryzen 3 is fast enough for most tasks, especially if using the power adapter (best Octane-2 score was 36,424)... but for best speed bang for your buck I would go with the Asus c536e i3-1115G4 (best Octane-2 score was 60,980). I purchased my Asus c536e i3-1115G4, 8GB, 128GB, 'open box' from eBay for around $240... this c536e is by far the fastest chromebook that I have, plus it's an attractive touchscreen convertible, with a backlit keyboard, and has excellent speakers.

Especially in the mixing & ironing out master-copies. I had received nearly a decades back taxes so i replaced my old laptop & got a 12TB storage drive plus a proper security suite...I hadn't used chrome os before this but was pretty familiar with using apps with android on my tab a so it seemed to fit. Being on disability i need electronics to last as long as possible because i can only make larger purchases 3 or 4 times a year so Bestbuy's computer techs helped me select my laptop my external drive & security suite my real main issue is so few usbs - 1 large & 1 small unless my large one or small one could be adapted to be increased up to 3 or even 4 large usb ports even just adapting the small usb input up to standard large usb would help quite alot anyways thanx for your time i totally appreciated that!L8rsk8r

I've just picked up a CM5 for Easter sale at Costco, mainly because the price was so good ($399), and also after I did a thorough research online and found out that a lot of the throttle-down reports in regards to AMD chips seem to have really originated from Intel's own Comet Lake and Tiger Lake reports. I think the true reason that those 10th and 11th and now 12th gen Intel I5's are outperforming these < 5000 series mobile Ryzens lies in the architectural superiority of these Intel chips, rather than the throttle-down accusations that Intel really had no business leveling at AMD, considering they're currently winning the battle in the lightweight mobile CPU market. But, I've always loved AMD and I have a Lenovo windows laptop with a Ryzen 7 5700U, and I'd take its 8 cores and a brilliant adaptive turbo mode over a core i5 any day. I did have some initial performance issues with that Ryzen 5700U Lenovo, but after I had it repaired under warranty, it turned out it had to do with defective hardware more than with any AMD CPU throttling going on. It took a motherboard replacement, but the laptop is now incredibly fast. It just sucks that I seem to need to run it with a cooling pad almost all the time, which adds to the inconvenience factor, but that's why we have Chromebooks, right?
One thing that is starting to bug me about CM5 is not the performance per se, but the fact that it just doesn't run things as well as my Acer Spin 713 does. With the CM5, I've had crashes with Firefox in Linux mode that I didn't have with the Acer, and I've had more incompatible/buggy Android app behaviors with the CM5 than with the Acer. Both are running ChromeOS version 100, as we speak, but other than the pretty awful speakers on the Acer, the Acer just seems better designed overall than the CM5. Yes, the CM5 has a better keyboard and better speakers, but that's where I think it pretty much stops. It's super nice having that 15.6" screen, too, as opposed to the 13.5" on the Acer, even though the screen on the Acer Spin 713 is much brighter and of much better quality. But I don't know. I've always really liked AMD cpu's and graphics, and I really want to like this CM5, but I don't know. Time will tell. I appreciate Costco having a 90 day return policy, because I might easily need that long to truly tell whether the CM5 is a keeper or not.

I purchased my Asus CX5 and I'm having the same issues as you did, Robby, with the trackpad having a little give and being clicky when scrolling down the touchpad - do you know if Asus has made any comment about this, if it's a feature or if's broken?
Honestly, the number pad underwhelming. The buttons are just too close together, or I have large fingers. But I will say it's the former, too close together because I use the numpad for work on a desktop and I have no issues with it, whereas the Asus CX5's number pads I have to watch my fingers and where they rest because they don't naturally fall where you would think they will fall.

Right now it seems like that's the only thing the CM5 has going for it so I would love a focus on more graphical points to see if the difference is even noteworthy. Maybe test some photo/video editing, graphic intense android games (COD Mobile, Fortnite, PUBG, War Robots), and run the unofficial version of steam to test games

I'm not a computer guy I know from growing up thru the 80's & becoming an adult in the very early 90's if you weren't computer literate you'd lose out on way too much; hence computer science classes were mandatory from grade 5 (so 10yrs old) until graduation of highschool bare minimum. At least in Canada in the bigger cities along the US border we did.But if that upgrade from a ryzen 3 to a 5 is a huge gain i will definitely do it asap. thanx & really enjoy your candid approach to what you do 👍 🤗.

At present, on a small selection of higher-specced Chromebooks, you can switch to the dev channel and install Steam. But I notice it's not on the list of Steam-compatible Chromebooks, probably because it has an AMD and not Intel processor.

If I may its probably worth pointing the AMD CPU is two generations old. Its a R5 3500C, bear in mind AMD is now on the 5000 series (zen 3). Further this isn't even Zen 2 on 7nm its actually a Zen+ CPU on 12nm despite the 3000 moniker. Its not that an AMD R5 cant compete with intels 11000 series. But this is an old AMD chip on an old TSMC node. I can only assume this is due the chip shortage.

You are kinda wrong about the processor in my honest opinion. I know Chromebooks are not ready for native gaming, but it makes me very excited about it having an AMD processor. I have been trying to push native gaming on my Chromebook and it's almost impossible because of its Intel processor. Using Wine 6, I have been able to run a lot of Windows games with horrible performance on an Intel i5 on an Acer Spin 713, and now that Chromebooks are starting to ship with AMD processors, things are going to get a lot spicier 😎

This is not the amd processor for gaming. I have a windows laptop with ryzen 3500u and vega 8 graphics and an intel i5-1135 with intel xe graphics. The intel one has more power and the gpu is like twice faster vs the amd integrated chip.

Laptops with AMD processors usually get way, way better battery life than its Intel counterparts because they run at a lower clock speed on battery. I see this as a plus, since if you really want to get stuff done, you can simple plug it in. AMD integrated GPUs are also way better than Intel's, which I guess it's why the wasd keys are red, although I still find it weird on a chromebook lol

@@yesterdaystech86 The 3500C is a rebranded 3 year old processor (based on 12nm Zen+ from late 2018) that is equivalent to current line of 11th Gen Celeron in terms of both power and efficiency. It's not at all competitive against the 4C/8T *Intel i3-1125G4* CPU that's based on 10nm Intel, which is roughly same as AMD's 7nm TSMC.
AMD's "Cezanne" *R5-5600U* is what's comparable to current generation *Intel i5-1135G7* that Robby is talking about, that's being used in every other Chromebook in 2021.
OP if you want Ryzen 5 in a Chromebook, get something with *5500U: priced like 11th Gen Intel Core i3, performs better than Core i5.*
As it stands right now, these AMD 3000C "Chromebook" CPUs are mostly a blatant Rip-off of AMD rehashing leftover stock unfortunately.

Eugh. AMD should not have made their processors throttle down to save battery life, as good for battery life as that should have been. It's a mobile chip, isn't it? Then it should be suitable for the priorities of a mobile device, including battery life. But maybe AMD does battery life better than Intel as a result, and at least we know about it. Intel didn't secure their processors properly until Meltown and Spectre, easily avoided vulnerabilities if they hadn't avoided appropriate security for _decades_ thereby screwing over their customers in consumer and enterprise, including servers. Looked at another way, AMD's processors are given a performance boost when plugged in, when they're willing to use the extra power.
Although... I don't use my Chromebook while plugged in most of the time, and if I'm doing something demanding, I want to be able to use the full capabilities of my system. Truthfully, a powerful AMD processor should be more efficient and save time, allowing me to get things done. And when I need that power, I'd rather sacrifice battery life than my time, you know? There should definitely be a way to disable throttling.
