    * UPDATE * (September 2023) - Since publishing this video, Google have increased the AUE date (the date up to which the Chromebook receives ChromeOS feature and security updates) to June 2029. They'd already extended it previously from June 2026 to June 2027. AUE date video: th-cam.com/video/KdeqbCqAfi4/w-d-xo.html

      I'd go for the Acer Spin 311 there if it's for an adult so you will benefit from the lightness over the robust design and not really miss the stylus I'd assume. • @MergeDroid
      @MergeDroid  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lakshmi, it's one of those "it depends" type questions. The Acer Spin 311 Chromebook is lighter and has 2 year's worth of Chrome OS updates compared to the ASUS Flip C214MA Chromebook. In my opinion it's higher quality in terms of the keyboard and trackpad too - you've seen the comparison in this video. The ASUS, as I show here, has and supports the use of a stylus and is more rugged. Hope that helps?

      Sorry, your comment got held for review, not sure why. See some of my other responses and also the detail in the video and video description on the two different variations of this model that exist. It sounds unfortunately that you have purchased the version without the stylus, it has a blanking plate in place. Double check the model version on the bottom from the detail I give. Are you able to return it? See my video on the Lenovo 500e 2nd gen., - th-cam.com/video/hoq2DEB832A/w-d-xo.html You might want to consider that as it's very similar and does come with a stylus.

      Hi, glad you liked it. Sounds like you have the version without the stylus that I mention in tbe video and the video description. You have a blanking plate, please don't pull it off (see comments from others). Your screen will also be matte rather than glossy I expect.

      Thank you sir for quick response, and i am so sorry to disturb you again. But, do you mean no stylus is there? , but I already have a hole and the the end of the stylus appears from it, I have watched another video to some people say, they got the place of the pen is empty. Thanks for the good review . I would like to know if it supports the Bluetooth LDAC codec ?
    Google did not provide an answer to this ...

    • @MergeDroid
      @MergeDroid  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, no problem - glad it was useful. As for your query.....it has Bluetooth 5.1 and I've read online that LDAC should be supported in any device with Android 8 or newer, which the base Android support on ChromeOS would be. Anyway you know I can test/prove this if I don't have any LDAC headphones(?) You might want to compare this one to the Lenovo 500e 2nd Gen. in case an answer is easier there - th-cam.com/video/JLKfB9Qil7E/w-d-xo.html If you do go for the ASUS just be careful with regards to the exact model variation you get, e.g. the one that does support the stylus and comes with it (also has a glossy touch screen finish) VS the one that doesn't support or come with the pen and has a matte screen finish (see video description for full part numbers.

    I've had this (or the C234) for two and a half years. It's good. The keyboard is good. Not sure what you mean by "mushy" but I think it's stiff because it's meant to last and take a lot of wear and tear. Mine has a matte display, too, but no stylus. Ruggedized chassis, made for elementary school students. Also, while the trackpad does seem to need more pressure than I'd like, I imagine the stiffness is part of making it durable, like it can take a bit of a pounding.
    I kind of love my Chromebook. I have my complaints, but I went to the Apple Store yesterday, resigned to the idea that I'd need to get a MacBook Air as my next computer if nothing more suitable doesn't come out. But I stil don't trust Apple. The Air's keyboard is a bit too clicky and it somehow feels off, even cheap somehow, like they cut corners and what is sold on quality is actually the cheapest facade of that quality Apple thought they could get away with. I don't want any other computer right nowe, including a MacBook. This fanless machine does everything I want and I got a great deal on it, only $250 CAD. It's still in like new condition or would be if I cleaned it up.

    • @MergeDroid
      @MergeDroid  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sounds like it's served you well! On the 'mushy' keyboard, I think it was the lack of feedback I felt from it, but again with the pros of the anti tamper keys, water resistant etc. A consideration for a replacement machine if you like the convertible form factor and keeping to a fanless Chromebook - th-cam.com/video/nc6RMm7Z9JQ/w-d-xo.html ?

    • @MergeDroid
      @MergeDroid  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This model seems to be glossy IPS, although as you've seen ASUS never out right say that. The non-stylus variant (see details in video description) is a matte finish. The Lenovo 500e 2nd gen I compare it to on the channel is glossy IPS too.

      @@MergeDroid I have actually considered calling ASUS support to be sure before buying. Here in Sweden the model is the C214MA-BW0024 but I guess it would be pretty comparable to the one you bought with just the difference in processor (N4000).
      Thank you for a very nice review (also just like the other ones I've seen). Very informative, keep it up!

      @@MergeDroid I haven't used a chromebook before but have tried my wife's chromebook. But for studies this fall I thought I would get me one just for schoolwork to not mix studies with personal computing. The 500e is not available with an roughly equal price here in Sweden. There are a few things that are a must in my chromebook (SD-card reader and IPS-screen). Then there are some things that are good to have (dual USB-C charging, touchscreen, low weight and small size). The ACER Spin 311 with it's low weight and small dimensions seems like a good candidate but since I will be bringing the Chromebook all over the place it would also be nice to have a rugged design for a little extra protection, Micro-SD reader for some extra storage for movies och tv-shows for some entertainment.
      Most of all I don't feel like pouring too much money in to it. It should just be a secondary computer for me to write on and some websurfing and media consumption on the train.
      If my Windows 11 laptop were to die I could replace it with a Chromebook for my "laptop needs" and do the other stuff on my stationary Windows-machine.
      I compiled an Excel-sheet to see what laptops that fit most of my wants and needs, and so far it's mostly just Chromebooks like the C214MA.
      Sorry for long comments but my wife is very uninterested in my Chromebook-investigations :D

      @@funkboyslim Please apologise to your wife 😅- but it's great to hear about your research! A few thoughts: 1.) The Lenovo 500e 2nd Gen. can appear expensive and often is, but I find sometimes Lenovo via their website directly, discount it. At least in the UK, I imagine this happens else where from time to time too so worth keeping an eye on. 2.) For storage, if you see a Chromebook without an SD card slot, consider this - th-cam.com/users/shorts60Ngcm87ju4 3.) Another option to maybe consider, the 6th gen. Asus flip 214 vs HP chromebook 11a....which one will be better in terms of performance, keyboard and display?

    • @MergeDroid
      @MergeDroid  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi - a few variables here, are you comparing the exact models of both as shown on the channel here? E.g. ASUS Flip C214MA in this video and HP 11a in this video - th-cam.com/video/xmD9z9NYY-8/w-d-xo.html ? Two fairly different offerings if so. ASUS is touchscreen and inc. stylus in this model variant, HP in non-touch so definitely no stylus, also is a TN screen. For screen therefore the ASUS wins. Performance, for normal use won't be too much between them, keyboards again similar-ish - neither are the best. ASUS is also convertible, HP isn't. Have you considered comparing this ASUS C214 against the Lenovo 500e 2nd Gen - th-cam.com/video/JLKfB9Qil7E/w-d-xo.html ?

    Is 11.6 too small for daily use? I notice that chrome os does not optimise for small screen laptops and the tabs do not auto hide when you scroll down and up.....

    • @MergeDroid
      @MergeDroid  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Lam, thanks for checking out the video. There's a physical key in the top row of Chromebook keys on all Chromebooks that lets you maximise a window to the point of hiding the tabs etc, that can help. I'd say 11.6 inch is fine for some people, especially if consuming data, but if you're at it all day typing etc without the option to use an external monitor and peripherals at all then you may appreciate a slightly larger and FHD screen. Check out my videos on the Acer Spin 513 th-cam.com/video/dw1LMxbi5Ys/w-d-xo.html and Lenovo Flex 5i th-cam.com/video/SsB8-DfNxWg/w-d-xo.html for example, both 13.3 inch FHD screens. For the price point of £150 / $204 USD and for the right user (kids or someone who needs the stylus), it's great. First decent UK short review I come across. Very important fact that the Lidl version does not come with a stylus, yet the Curry's version does - and 99p cheaper too! I am glad you point this out, because I would have been disappointed. For the price it looks good, but how does it perform with apps like Snapseed, Lightroom and other photo editing apps. Is the stylus a plus point? This is what I would use it for.

    • @MergeDroid

      Cheers, glad the video helped. To be honest if you're serious about those apps I'd say it's worth investing in a more premium Chromebook that could support a USI pen that you may have to purchase separately. See my review of the Lenovo Flex 5i for example: th-cam.com/video/SsB8-DfNxWg/w-d-xo.html This ASUS on the other hand is fine for the casual user / kids and the novelty / use of the stylus to interact with it.

    What about the storage
    Is 32 gigabyte enough?

    • @MergeDroid
      @MergeDroid  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thanks for checking the video. With regards to Chromebook storage, I'd say for most users 32GB isn't an issue. Chromebooks aren't intended to be used with all your files locally, it's about working in the cloud, Google Docs etc. In terms of Android apps also I find I don't use it like my phone, most of the time I want the full website in the Chrome browser, so I have fewer Android apps installed. Games would be the exception here where you may need more than 32GB. I think the other reason in particular that someone may need more is if they are installing the Linux terminal as that does want to take up an amount of space. If you wanted to have some offline video or audio you might like to consider a solution like this - th-cam.com/users/shorts60Ngcm87ju4 (what I personally do), or a MicroSD card where they have a slot (like on this ASUS). It's also worth keeping in mind that most Chromebook models will come with an array of different configurations, often with storage being one of the variables. Please do check out some of the other Chromebook reviews on the channel if you think you may want one with more storage and do sonsider a sub 👍

I don't have this exact ASUS Chromebook anymore, but I recently received with C204MA (th-cam.com/video/vPdM6Gxx7d8/w-d-xo.html) which has the same Intel Celeron N4020 processor, so have tested there for you. I also checked for you on a machine running an ARM procesor (MT8183 in the Acer Spin 311 - th-cam.com/video/CcH9JZRkJLI/w-d-xo.html) - same result there unfortunately too!
