    It's been a bit of a wait, but we finally have ASUS' new tablet here in the office. Since it's been around for quite some time, there's little surprise, here. This is a 10.5-inch tablet/detachable Chromebook that offers a similar array of hardware that we've had in this space since early 2020 in the Lenovo Chromebook Duet. The ASUS promises a bit more quality in the design, adds in a stowed USI pen, and has a little trick up its sleeve with the kickstand, but the idea is the same. We're hopping in the box to see how it stacks up.

    Love seeing the headphone jack here for people like me who have sets of wired cans everywhere. No worries a our recharging, you can just leave a decent set of IEMs or portable headphones in your bag and plug them in. I hate worrying about a dongle or external DAC/Headphone amp for a portable device like this.

    I saw this next to the Duet in the store recently. I do like it but I prefer the smaller form factor of the Duet for portability. It's nice though that people in the market for such a device now have a choice. If I didn't already own a Duet it would still be my choice of the two.

    Even with a sturdier keyboard, these devices are meant to be used on a table surface. I'm happy that I was able to pick up the Duet with the pen for $305 CAD as Lenovo always has deals. I do however like the stylus execution on this device.

    I want one with a 12" screen. Seems like someone could make a detachable that will house the stylus and have the great features of this tablet's keyboard. Would also be nice to have decent quad speakers for home media consumption so I wouldn't have to bring the tablet along with me throughout the house in order to hear whatever podcast I'm listening to. Earphones are fine, but not practical to wear for more than a couple of hours. Darn the Pixel Slate for not following up with a good idea and improving their first go at this form factor!

    Thanks for reviewing this one! I have the Duet and I love it, but I've been wanting something with a stylus built in and the "Surface-style" magnets in the keyboard to snap it to the front of the device. My Duet also somehow got a little bent out of shape (iPads aren't the only tablets that bend, apparently), and while it still works, it just doesn't feel as good in hand anymore. I'm really looking forward to the HP X2 11, but this one has also been on my radar as a Duet competitor/replacement.

    Lack of a headphone jack on the lenovo duet isn't really a problem as mine shipped with a USB C to headphone jack adapter ( but not so good if you want to use the only usb c socket for something else. Also the camera is actually quite good unless you are comparing it with a mobile phone camera. What I do like about this asus is the included pen, the two way stand, and the sturdier fitting of the keyboard - that is better than the duet.

      A year ago I bought a Samsung Tab S6 Lite and a Lenovo Duet, for about the same price. For day-to-day tablet use, I found that a dedicated Android tablet to be the BETTER user experience. Chrome seems to have a split personality. I also had a full-size folding Bluetooth keyboard if I needed to do lots of typing. The Samsung also has vastly better speakers, a headphone jack, and comes with an Spen. An excellent 3rd party case cost $10. Most importantly to me, the Samsung screen is gorgeous and makes the Duet screen look washed out. I returned the Duet. FYI.

      This has been my experience as well. When it comes to Tablets, Android devices are still miles better than 2-in-1 Chromebooks. Galaxy Tab S6 Lite is just really hard to beat at just $200 for any other manufacturer. The Screen, Pen, Speakers, Speed, and Optimization are all near Apple's top-end iPad quality. Chrome OS is a better value on clamshell laptops than tablets.

    Thanks for this video, and showing me an opportunity to replace my Lenovo Duett but unfortunately I already replaced my Duett just a few weeks ago, due to a recommendation on a video which recommended replacing it with Acer Spin 513 which after a few weeks still seems a perfect replacement for my Duett. I think the video that caused my decision also was from this channel, but maybe it was an unpacking of the Acer 514 (Ryzen CPU) which I have been focussed to, but then decided to buy the 513, cos 13” fits perfect to my needs. .
    But thanks to Lenovo, for making it so cheap for me to check the ChromeOS and making my Dell Latitude Laptop(Windows, price ~2500$ in Germany) the most unused item in my home.
    I am still happy with my decision. and I definitely will not replace my Acer Spin 513 now, because if it still has any flaws, these go to Google's ChromeOS and not to Acer’s hardware.
    ATM I am sitting on my Couch trying to voice type this comment on my Acer Spin 513 with Google Docs. And for this job my first remark is that voice typing and error correction works a lot better in English than it does in the German language which I normally use. But what still bugs me most atm is ChromeOS’ virtual keyboard, which never fails to popup in any situation and screen spot where it happens to bug me to the max. I definitely do not consider buying a new Chromebook unless the following nuisances get solved in ChromeOS:
    Virtual Keyboard (why is this almost perfect on my Pixel 5, what at6 least proves that Google can do it better.
    Android 12 works with Chrome OS (where I hope that it will serve some of the nuisances I have atm.
    But one thing I'm definitely sure of forever is: I will never never ever return to Windows-World. I say this after using Windows since Windows 3.11 daily until it dropped my Dell Notebook 30cm from my couch to the floor and I took Dell over 5 Weeks to repair it, luckily I had insurance which paid for the damage. but since then my Dell 2.5K$ nLaptop sleeps on my desktop almost untouched. I just touch it every few weeks to check the battery's condition. My daily work got done on the Lenovo Duett until I replaced it with the Acer Spin 513, which is my “daily driver'' now and I don't even think of replacing it before Google offers me a a Pixelbook Go with a Whitechapel CPU (GS 101 or now called Tensor) CPU. And ChromeOS should get rid of the nuisances listed above… in that case I wouldn’t even mind paying up to 2000 US$. If the first video on Chrome Unboxed convinces of the new Pixelbook Go successor, I will not hesitate to order it from the Google Store asap.
    My thanks and respect goes to Google, Acer, Lenovo and Chrome Unboxed for making my life so much better after ~30 years in the Windows World.for this cheap amount of money.
    And preventing me from escaping to the Apple Univers. Although I closely watch whatever Apple does. Ipad Pro would be very tempting but what bI miss most is a capital G printed on its back. 😉

A. $369/$300 x 100 = 123, so, using the prices given in the video, the Asus CM3 is 23% (not "thirty, forty percent") more expensive than the Lenovo Ideapad Duet - using the given price of $300 for the Duet as the basis (100%) for the comparison. Or, if you prefer, $69/$300 x 100 = 23%. Great review, though!

      So it uses a USI stylus/digitizer and should not be any less capable then current tablets and Chromebooks that use the same. The Duet uses a USI stylus and drawing is just fine. I do mostly tech/pencil drawing so can't speak a lot for presure sensitivity etc, as I don't use it much. But what little I have, it's definitely adequate.

It let me get online so I could do some code reviews and that was about it. It technically was able to run all the projects I was working on with VS Code, but it was so slow (not that it would really be fair to expect anything else).

    • @jamesm9312
      @jamesm9312 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The underlying hardware is capable of 64bit instruction but the Chrome OS installed is 32bit, thus why the Duet's unlikely to see above 4gb RAM in the current config.

    • @stenfilg

      64 bit userland wouldn't lead to any noticeable performance improvement on this device, though. Maybe we should expect to see a later higher end ARM Chromebook to run 64 bit applications-the HP X2 11 perhaps.

    • @stenfilg
      @stenfilg 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@liamness Maybe, but my concern is more for the Android environment included. On my Duet, Android is also 32bit, and google is slowly migrating app developers to focus mainly on 64bit development. Indeed, quite a few new games I've tested recently only work in 64bit Android. I'd hate to have a tablet slightly crippled 3-4 years down the line because apps just aren't compatible with it.
