Going to be upfront: I am a complete amateur when it comes to knowing how to tell a good device from a lacking one and I'm not as versed in how to really look for a reliable review for what is a great buy. However, this channel seems by and far the best source for info on what to look for. My current device is an HP Chromebook (not sure what the exact model is, but it's white with lime green accents and was around $400 when bought) and has served me well for 5+ years (it's even survived several hard knocks!) (Quick edit, I found an almost exact model in one of his earlier reviews from seven years ago. Mine is very similiar in appearance to the HP Chromebook 14, but it doesn't have the dip in front of the touchpad, the HP symbol on the lid is in the accent color, not silver, and mine's color- again, lime green- is not one of the possible colors to get the HP Chromebook 14 in. Mine also does not have fans.) Unfortunately, it's starting to reach the end of its tether and I'm almost certain that I'm going to have to replace it within the next year. I've been seeing the new chromebook ads and they've really caught my eye. (Stopping to say that the chromebook showcased in this video looks amazing, hopefully the review is steller because I would probably love this one, it has every feature I wanted to get in my next device: larger screen, a crisp looking display, backlit keyboard, a camera cover- which I only just found out was a thing from this video but am absolutely sold on- a stylus, and it's convertible! And the option of cheaper versions sounds very promising.) Buuut then I tried to look that specific ad up on TH-cam to look at the specific model names shown at the end (the new Samsung model was one of them I know), couldn't find it, and instead got video upon video of: "Chromebooks suck! These chromebook ads are crazy! False advertising! Just get a [insert brand name] laptop, they're so much better!" I love my chromebook, I thought it functioned great. The built-in virus protection was a huge chunk of why I got it because it took away that stress of worrying over stuff like that. Every Windows laptop I've ever owned usually didn't perform as well if I'm honest. All I ever really used my chromebook for was to browse the internet and watch shows/youtube, or use Google Docs. I never gamed on it. I would really like to try start working on learning digital art, which is the main reason I want to get a touchscreen device with a stylus. Main thing is, I don't have the oppurtunity to be able to AFFORD an expensive device too often. The only wiggle room is often every other Christmas. So I also want to grab something that will last like my current chromebook has. Should I just go with a chromebook like I'm used to and super comfortable with? Or switch? (Oh oof, essay length comment again)
Get another chromebook. If a Chromebook has served you well for 5 years, you don't need the hassle of windows. Most people are on windows and need to think about whether they actually use the windows features- you were already on a chromebook. It's a total no Brainer. As for the people saying xhrombrooks suck, they're mostly gamers, video editors, or people that need almost custom computers built. Those people using CAD software and whatnot need specs that us mere mortals can't dream of. Most chromebooks nowadays have the same specs and hardware as many windows laptops. The days of 4gb RAM/32 gb SSD are newly over. Get the chromebokk pictured here, the Acer Spin 713, or *possibly* the lenovo Flex 5 depending on what your budget is. Since this is a purchase that needs to last, get a device with a Tiger lake chip if possible. If you hate fans, get the Asus CX5400, if you don't mind quiet fans, any or the others mentioned are fine. Tiger Lake is the 11th generation Intel processor. It's easy to discern. When you see a listing for i3, i5, etc., it will say i3-1115G4 for example. If it says i3-10_______, then it is a 10th gen processor. I3-8xxxx would be an 8th gen processor, etc. Basically the first 2 numbers after the dash are most important. Get an 11th gen if you can. At a minimum, get a 10th gen and you'll be good for years. Avoid the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook if you're on the go a lot because of the battery life. Otherwise, it is a good option even though it is only 10th gen. So Acer Spin 713 (2021 model), Lenovo Flex 5i, or the Asus CX5400 are some good examples if you haven't already pulled the trigger.
Robbie, I Just unboxed it in the I3 config and my takeaway form comparing it ro the Pixelbook Go is that the Asus is incrementally better. The Go's monitor was always a joy to watch with it's clarity and smoothness but the Asus is even sharper and more awe inspiring. I'd thought that the Go's 380 nits would be greatly missed but the Asus's 330 as tested is just fine. The only slight shortcoming of the Asus I notice so far is that the keyboard lighting is weak compared to the Go's and more importantly the speakers are useless compared to the Go. A peripheral speaker is mandatory in my view.
So I found a listing for this chromebook on Amazon at around $730, would that be a trustworthy place to buy it from? It says it's from the ASUS Store, but the only other place I've managed to find the CX5400 on is the main ASUS site for a little over $1000, which is what has me a little bit worried about it not being legitimate. I just don't want to drop $730-$800 on a risky buy... EDIT: OKAY. So I just did a little digging through the links in the description of this video, and the Chrome Shop where to buy link for this chromebook actually took me to that exact Amazon listing, so I'm taking that as a sign that it is in fact legitimate. I may just pull the trigger after all.
The screen was actually 300 nits on the C436 (I reviewed it). And the color accuracy was amazing! It's possible you got a dud, outside of that, I'm glad they fixed the other actual issues from the c436
I would suggest trying Roblox in your test, or at least other similarly intensive android apps, as well as linux apps when testing for thermals. The C302 overheats quite a bit under those loads, though of course you would hope that the newer processor and integrated graphics in the CX5 would alleviate that.
