  • Stuart and Cliffe Knechtle from the TH-cam channel @givemeananswer allowed me to join them on the campus of UNC to have some follow-up / sidebar conversations with the college students they were engaging with. This was one of those conversations and I really enjoyed it. I hope you do as well!

Thank you everyone for watching this conversation. I hope you find it fruitful! This was my first time really doing something like this on camera, and frankly, It's very strange (and also fascinating) to listen back and see all the different directions the conversation could have potentially taken. There are some things I wish I had persued, clarified, avoided, etc...
Ultimately, I know that this was not a perfect conversation but I also know that God is with me and desires to draw people to Himself. And so my prayer for this student is that the Holy Spirit would convict him of Sin and show him the glory and wonder of God's grace. That he would repent, believe & be born again.
More videos like this to come (each with it's own lesson to be learned & each with it's own desperate need of God)!!!

Two very good people ( "..only God is good.." ) conversing while respecting one another. I did not see the judgmental "better than thee" attitude some said Christians have, instead saw a sadness on the interviewer that the student was not able to receive Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior at that moment. However, I sense that this young smart student will address Jesus in a more open hearted way and receive a greater movement of the Holy Spirit because of this wonderful conversation ( 1 Corinth 1:2-3 ..Christ crucified, a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Greeks..) May we all receive more of the Holy Spirit and approach each other in this graceful way

At the end, he was so close to a true understanding of the relationship with Jesus that we need to have. He said "If you serve your sentence for me, but morally I still haven't progressed past the fact that I committed that murder and I would still do it again, then what does it matter that Jesus died/that someone served my time for me" EXACTLY!!! That is the state we are in when we deny our need to repent for our sins. If we don't acknowledge and repent of our sins, Jesus dying for us doesn't matter because WE aren't sorry. Jesus's blood can't wash away our sins if we don't admit to them, ask for forgiveness, and change in our hearts to not continue doing that sin.

Back in the old testament, they had to sacrifice animals to pay for sins, the animal served as a substitute to die for the sinner, every time a person sins an animal gets sacrificed.
Jesus (also called lamb of God) served as the final sacrifice to die for all sinners and bridge the gap between God and humans.

    • @espi3324

To bounce off this...Isn't it interested that in Leviticus and Numbers God specifically talks about the sacrificing of lambs for difference atonements and he specifically states "no bones shall be broken". Flip to the NT, and the lamb of God (Jesus) would have no broken bones. I thought this was interesting.

“I shouldn’t have needed Jesus to have existed for me to access the truth…”
His instinct is still to rely only on himself - to be good, to know truth, to not suffer. He is carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. It is lonely and heavy.
True freedom and peace comes from learning how to trust a good God above yourself. I pray that his heart softens and his curiosity grows until he discovers that God is real, God is good, God can be trusted, and God loves him and invites him into covenantal relationship. As love replaces loneliness, trust replaces fear, and truth replaces deception.

And God never said the white race is the master race and you can enslave inferior races and treat them like animals & property, or treat woman as 2nd class citizensv. If more people understood it well the first time rather it feeling somewhat forced or programmed to us then we’d all be Christians. Personally, since I was a young child I’d be forcefully taken to church and constantly switching never fully understanding the gospel rather thinking it would please God if I just obeyed him. But I didn’t even know God because I never truly accepted Jesus for who he was. After understanding it at 21 (the age I am right now) I thought “Who would ever say no to Jesus?”. He literally takes away shame, fears, pain, and gives us true purpose compared to the fake purpose I’ve created in my mind that would never truly satisfy me.

I can’t remember where I heard this, but it helped me better understand the gravity of what Jesus did on the cross. To the discussion at 19:00 regarding why Jesus had to die on the cross and bridging the gap between humanity and God: Because we have an infinitely holy and righteous God, the smallest transgression or diversion away from infinite holiness or perfection creates a chasm or foundational separation between us and God that is the size of infinity. This also explains why God himself is the only one capable of closing that gap because he is the only infinite being.

Hey friend in the vid - love your open mindedness and gracious way of understanding the meaning even if the wording isn’t perfect, it’s rare and beautiful. These conversations are so important for us all and again, far too rare. Good, thoughtful questions that I think are part of the essence of the verse “work out your salvation with fear and trembling” - these are the things you work through. If you continue to ask and seek, the answers will be revealed. Thank you for being a breath of fresh air.

It's interesting, this conversation really does highlight the true distinction of Jesus as the route to salvation. All other religions teach that we are wicked and should pursue the achievement of enlightened thinking and behavior, and all of them do an excellent job of demonstrating just how insanely difficult it would be to even attempt true virtuous perfection; many of them concede that humans ought to contend with simpler moral practicalities (good works/deeds) since the divine understands that we as mortals are limited and imperfect and can never truly achieve absolute divine justification. And even then, most of the good deeds are impossible to keep consistently, and eventually one will fall short. The old testament laws and additional guidelines that had to be followed in biblical days were so innumerable, devout believers had to walk around with dictionary-sized books chained to their waists so they could constantly remind themselves of which laws they ought not break, because it was a literal impossibility to attempt memorizing them all. Jesus did away with all of that, simply using it as a teaching tool to demonstrate that no man is perfect or ever will be.
Jesus is the only one that says "Yeah, I know you can't do it all, so guess what. You don't have to. Just believe in me, and I'll do it for you." He answers with arguably the most logical conclusion you could imagine from a human perspective (which itself is such a mercy, that an omnipotent being would appeal to us on our mortal/carbon-based level). What's more relatable, someone telling you "You simply aren't weightless enough to achieve true enlightenment, go meditate for another 4 years in the same spot without eating and maybe you'll be close", or "Lol you can't possibly hope to follow every rule for the rest of your life, why even put that kind of pressure on yourself? Just admit you're not inherently good and be humble about it, and I've got the rest. Let's just be friends ok?"

One thing that sticks out to me where I think we're really missing the mark is that many Christians are trying to bring non Christians to believing in Jesus Christ through reason alone. And if we look at 1 Corinthians 2:4-5 it says, "My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God's power."
If we're going to talk about Jesus and validate his existence than we have to do so not only with reason but with God's power. Everywhere Jesus preached about the Gospel he healed the sick and diseased and told his disciples to do the same. That's what we need to start doing as well. Because people need more than just reasoning... They need to experience Him. This is something we have to remember when telling others about the Gospel. Lay hands on people, watch them get healed, and see the shift that starts to happen that allows their heart to be more open and receptive to the fact that God is real. It can't just be about reasoning alone anymore. When need to bring the Kingdom to people through the power of the Holy Spirit and allow people to experience physical healing and tangible miracles.

For your first time, it was really good. Personally for me, when i was first trained to witness, or tell others of Jesus, we would bring up to others the conversation of the question of what happens when we die. To get others to think of their own mortality is something that people don't normally spend the necessary time to really grasp and wrestle with, and really gets people to think about the why's of life, and of meaning and purpose

A beautiful conversation and an incredible example of respect, from both sides. On why Jesus died for us, there are so many details about that event it’s difficult to comprehend. One thing that always stood out to me was the doubt Jesus had before he passed ‘Father, why have you forsaken me?’. Slavoj Žižek helped me realise that 1) the depths of human suffering are strong enough to make God forget his identity (as a part of the trinity) 2) but also this shows us that doubt itself is not a sin as Jesus led a sinless life. To doubt is human, to wrestle with the idea of God is normal.
All that said your explanation of closing the gap was brilliant and very well explained.

ATHEISM and CHRISTIANITY under the AUTHORITY, POWER, and CONTROL of SATAN the DEVIL
      ATHEISTS versus CHRISTIANS
      Satan the Devil WANTS
      Christians to hate all Atheists
and deceive them to believe the LIES and false teachings of the anti-Christs about "hellfire", "afterlife", "immortality of the souls", "Armageddon", "Trinity", "reincarnation", and "rapture"
      so
Atheists can bring themselves their own dishonor, disgrace, downfall and ETERNAL DEATHS, worthless and useless dusts on earth forever.
      Satan the Devil WANTS
      Atheists to hate all Christians
and deceive them to believe the Satanic LIE and false claim that the God and Father of Jesus Christ is worthless, useless, and undeserving to be honored and respected as the Only True and Sovereign God
      so
all Christians can bring themselves their own dishonor, disgrace, downfall and ETERNAL DEATHS, worthless and useless dusts on earth forever.
Billions and billions of Atheists and Christians..... lied to, deceived, and murdered by Satan the Devil, the Father of Lies and Murderer of human beings.
ETERNAL LIFE and EXISTENCE on EARTH for FOLLOWERS of JESUS CHRIST
      GOD KNOWS
that his favor and reward for all persons on earth who willingly submit to the authority of Jesus Christ as his Chosen King and Ruler of the heavens and the earth
and believe his teachings too about the "Kingdom of God" and "Resurrection of the Dead"
      is
ETERNAL LIFE and existence on earth without sufferings, pains, griefs, sickness, and death.
      Jesus Christ KNOWS
that his teaching about the "RESURRECTION of the DEAD"
      is
his GOD and Father's guarantee that loving, kind, and respectful persons on earth who died recently and thousands of years ago like Abel, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Job, King David, his Followers and disciples, and many others
      will
all be RESURRECTED back to life in the right and proper time so they can happily, abundantly, and peacefully live and exist on earth forever as citizens and subjects of the "KINGDOM of GOD"
and fully enjoy his and his GOD and Father's eternal love, kindness, goodness, generosities, compassions, favors, and blessings for eternity
under his loving and kind rulership, guidance, and protection as his GOD and Father's Chosen King and Ruler of the heavens and the earth.

Good conversation. I'd be exactly the wrong kind of person to speak to this student because I'm highly logical and go directly to the heart of any matter. All the extraneous stuff would make me impatient and want to keep dragging him back to the core question: Did the resurrection happen or didn't it? I'd end up saying something counterproductive like, "Facts don't care about your feelings."
I'm much better at talking to more logical people like scientists, engineers, physicians, lawyers, mathematicians, philosophers, etc. They tend not to get so hung up on "I just want a good story that speaks to me" and looking for a worldview that appeals to their personal sense of morality (which I think keeps scientists from wanting to investigate Christianity, but they made up their minds based on a faulty belief that science can explain everything).

A brilliant discussion, framed nicely by a measured and well thinking student.
I think with all detractors, or those just not yet convinced of the Christian message, who hold sound and credible and virtuous belief systems, they just need to keep stepping the questions back a notch and if they continue their own path of reasoning, ultimately they will arrive at the Highest Common Denominator, God, who is all poweful, mighty gracious and is the one essence in three persons, who lived and died for us. He loves us without question, and in Jesus' name and God's Holy Grace, we have life, and the promisen of eternity in His presence.. God, my God, you are The Man, I love you.
