Lovely video. Thanks for the mention. Enough comes from having had too little and from having had too much. Only then can we know what’s enough for us.-Patrick Rhone The channel has always been about that journey for me. Thanks again. I’ll be working on my impression of you now (of course.)
Hahah! Thanks so much Keith. I think Clapton quoted somebody in an interview years ago. The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom. He was talking about booze and drugs. For me it’s amps and pedals. Hahaha! Best to you sir!
@@ThatPedalShow That´s a William Blake quote: “The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom...You never know what is enough until you know what is more than enough.” Even more relevant...
Joe Bonamassa uses amps as pedals. He's like "oh THIS tweed is when I want to kick it into overdrive and THIS tweed is when I want really sweet clean and THIS tweed is when I want an edge of breakup tone and THIS tweed is setup to go with humbuckers and THIS tweed is setup to go with single coils and THIS tweed is setup to go with P90's and THIS tweed is setup to get that British type tone and THIS tweed is setup to get a Marshally tone and THIS tweed is setup to get a Dumble sound but PEDALS are for lazy people..." LOL!
"we're interested in helping you get the most music, from the least amount of gear" The worst tagline on TH-cam. Nothing that channel does cares about helping you with music, and doesn't show anything that would lead to that. He shows nothing but massive amounts of gear. I tell him it might as well be "we're interested in helping you bake amazing brownies.....on today's video, we talk about all the gear from the past 70 years.....this...is 5 watt world" So stupid
Neither Five Watt or TPS can be rated highly enough. There isn't a mechanism for properly acknowledging their value. "Priceless" is a decent term, and yet... doesn't quite hit the mark. Cheers!
He also said ... “To conceive an idea is noble. To execute the work is servile.” "I may not know much about art, but I know what I like" - the Pope. "I'm Pink, therefore I'm ham!" - Porky Pig
I’ve wanted a Gigrig since starting to watch this channel years ago, but now because of this editing style I want it to come with lights that highlight which pedals are on.
I appreciate everything about how Mick explained his point. I feel like the reason why a lot of us watch that pedal show is way beyond just finding out about gear. Of course there are so much useful info about gear on this channel, but it’s always about Dan and Mick sharing their passion and getting creative with these videos that makes all of this so much more entertaining and actually helps us to not forget that music is about creating what you love and the journey towards that. I’m just a 20 year old kid from Japan,(mixed race, long story) and if you guys happen to read this by any chance (Dan & Mick) please know that what you guys are doing inspire so many people like me who love playing guitar and want to create inspiring sounds out of our instrument. Best guitar related content on TH-cam. Cheers.
Kannon, thank you so much for this. First for the kind words, but also for being open minded enough to see what we’re trying to do here. And that you’re just 20 is edifying for us ‘old’ men who constantly worry that we’re becoming less and less relevant. :0) Most of all, that anything we do might provide any inspiration at all for you to be passionate about playing. Thanks Kannon, and the very very best to you! Mick (and Dan!)
After 40 years of guitar playing (and lots of gear passing by) I now settled to a small amount of gear that i found and kept over the years. I don't think I've bought anything for the last 2-3 years. Some of my "rules" are: - One good guitar per type. Strat, Telecaster, 335, LP and LP Jr. (and a cheap bass for my recordings) - A small valve amp with really good speakers (1x12" plus a 4x12") - Tuner, boost, 2xsoft clipping OD, Ditto looper and reverb. - Keep the gear in good condition. Change the strings, do set up, good tubes, biased, good quality cables etc - Keep the room clean. Hide cables. Make it quick & easy to grab a guitar and play. - I write songs. Get a good microphone (I use an old SM57) and a simple DAW (I use Audacity). And I can start a recording (if I get an idea for a riff, lick or a melody) within 5 seconds. It's all set and ready to go. I even have a flexible mike holder for the SM57 mounted on my 1x12 and connected to the audio interface. No time wasted looking for cables and connect stuff...just record... - Put 5-10 minutes aside for "boring training" each day. Set the alarm on the phone and run the scales or practice that new lick. 5-10 minutes...but do it every day... - Practice to backing tracks or recordings for flow in your playing. Get the chops. And talk to your neighbours. I live in an apartment in an old building in city. Put a riff on the ditto, high volume, and went to my neighbours (with a dB meter) asking at what volume they found it to loud. 92dB were acceptable for them. Then I knew. So my philosophy today is: Spend time on playing, be creative, have fun, have good stuff...instead of dreaming about "the next cool gear"
Thanks Mick! Love you giving Keith a shout out. FWW has been an inspiration and education for me over the past year and you guys have as well. I’ve learned so much from both channels. Keep up the great work!
Controversial opinion: there’s nothing wrong with being a collector. I can’t afford a bunch of fancy high-end guitars, but if someone else can, who cares? They’re not hurting anybody. Having 50 overdrive pedals goes to help a bunch of small boutique business owners have a career they love. Some people like a stripped down rig, some people like a massive arsenal. No one is being hurt. Why do guitar players care so much about what others do?
Nothing controversial about this at all Keith. I feel the same way about cars. I’d really really really love a nice 911 and I get annoyed when some people have four of them. But, I’m happy for them. Awesome car.
@@ThatPedalShow I also don’t think there is anything inconsistent with what Keith is asking - having gone through a few of his vids (thanks for making me aware!) I sort of boil down his point(s) to: - Understand what you are trying to do, what activity you are trying to engage in. - Have the gear, and in some ways only the gear, that helps you do those things. There is no implicit judgement, there, on the an individual’s intent or purpose - and thus no judgement on ‘how many’ things one may have. But it’s an interesting question to pose - ‘what are you trying to do...other than just gather’...and take it from there.
I don’t think it’s the amount of gear. It’s the build and sound quality. I can honestly say , buying great gear has progressed my playing far more than my old line 6 spider turned to a low volume. Having the right gear to get the sound that’s in your head into reality is paramount.
I didn't improve much for a few decades, but when I plugged into 125 Watts, I got way better in about one day. Having the neighbors listening to every pop and squeak motivated me, somehow 🙉
Hey Mick. I've been playing professionally for some 50 years. In all that time, I've remained committed to my fingers rather than the gear. Not because I necessarily like it that way, just because there aren't enough hours in the day to get my fingers to do what I want them to do. Then came lock down and all the gigs dried up and I found myself with a bit more time on my hands and without gigs to practice for, a touch less motivation. I decided to "allow" myself to explore the mysteries of tone. That was a year and a half ago and I now find myself with two pedal boards and a couple new guitars and an often confused zeal for how do I turn all this gear into music. In my newfound quest I do find myself watching videos like yours all to often rather than working out how to get the sounds I want out of my guitar (and amp and pedals and cables). However, I am having a GREAT time and approaching music in new ways that has opened me up and improved my capacity to both listen and play. Hell, I even play my acoustic differently these days, paying attention to nuances of tone that completely escaped me in the past. So your right - it is the journey that matters and the players willingness to stay open and welcome the beginner no matter how experienced you may be. And anything that kindles that creative spark is well worth the price of admission. That said, I did recently buy the most important piece of kit of my life. A TPS T-shirt. So now, my capacity to play won't really matter as now I can wear the shirt to shows and stand in the back of the club with a slightly disdainful look on my face and feel fully accomplished without ever touching a guitar! Thanks!
Ha! THanks so much Vince, not least for buying the shirt. Please make sure your arms are folded at the back of that club. Hahaha! It’s a continual journey - I’m totally with you. And on that journey you become interested in various things along the way. Thanks for being with us!
Good story. My's something like that. Had G A S real bad while trying to build my board. Once done I've lost the G A S and haven't got anything but replacement items lately; strings, tubes. Now I could live with 2 guitars 1 amp 1 board and a box I got of anything hookup for stage; wireless, D I , extra cords strings picks, music, tuner ,capo. Anything needed for working on stage. I usual don't even bring stands anymore. But I got everything to put 6 people to work including 3 singers. Most of all that stuff was so cheap or free that I just couldn't refuse it. But when you don't use it you still have to upkeep and store all this.
I'm getting back into playing after a long break but I can relate. I recently doubled my guitar collection from two to four. But I still have just one amp and two pedals, one of which is getting repaired. But I'll probably get a couple more pedals just because of what I have learned here on this channel and that should be quite a bit of fun, and that's kind of the point.
6:40 That's so so true, me and my Dad wired my old Mexican '92 Strat's bridge pickup to the tone knob and it's given it a new lease of life as it was too icepick before; I also wired a button in to connect the bridge to the neck pick-up and it's made it a tele on demand. The Stratocaster is such a glorious workhose.
When covid-lockdown started here in L.A., I started buying pedals out of boredom - always an amp distortion with a tube screamer for a boost .. for decades. I sing and play rhythm, so I rarely even needed the boost. I stumbled-across this show early-on and your playing blew my mind. Most American gear-channel hosts are metal-centric ... not my thing. Now I have 30 + pedals & have improved to the point that I’m considering going 3-piece. Pedals inspired me to play more & get better. We’re very close to being turned-loose - which means I can start rehearsing the stuff I’ve been writing with other guys. I’ve never been more confident in my playing. Thank you for the inspiration & advice. This show has been a very valuable oasis for an at-risk guy who’s been locked-down for a year this Sunday. ☮️
About a year ago I built a small board with five pedals: tumnus, phase 95, ep boost, sp compressor, flashback mini delay on a small pedaltrain board using pedaltrain's powersupply. My large board (with 17+ pedals, many being expensive boutique units) was too much to haul to a weekly jam with some of the neighborhood rockers, and i was worried about damage or theft. The consequence has been that the large board has been largely ignored lately. Sometimes i miss the wha and fuzz, but it is amazing how much music can be found in the small board. Thank you for your time and attention. Cheers from Michigan.
Just tell her that each one inspires you to play something different, to play differently. It's about the attitude it inspires in you more than it is about the exact sound it makes.
I love the explanation in this video. Truly a great string of ideas and concepts, artfully squeezed into less than a half hour. Kudos to the guitar playing too!
Im in the process of paring down a bit at the moment to reallocate funds towards other life adventures. What I can say is that I do often try to keep my gear in check, but lately ive aquired a few more amps that I need. So first on the chopping block is amps, then a few guitars. I dont have tons of pedals. I rarely miss gear when its gone. Thats been good to remember.
Loved this vlog! I bought a Helix awhile back for cover and P&W gigs and it really inspired me to reduce my “analog” rig to the essentials. No longer needing to get ALL of the sounds allowed me to focus on getting MY sound.
It’s about artistic pallet. If you’re a player who enjoys “a study in black” then limited options is your inspiration. If you’re a “hyper-realism” visionary, you need colors. Do you, there are no rules.
Robert Ryman is a bit of a hero, he was mostly into different interpretations of white. Also, I am hoping to explore some harmonic resonances, to see if there are ways to do that without the usual te Deum. The over-building of the rig is epic, not a small part of the project.
That would be an artist's ' palette ' A pallet is what you'd put half a ton of bricks on. Not to be confused with your ' palate ' which would be your sense of taste, if you have any.
I like Keith's philosophy. I went from almost a dozen guitars and bunch of pedals to 3 guitars and 12 pedals. Been focusing less on my GAS and more on practice and songwriting. Love where I'm at and more importantly, heading to!
Seriously, I think that this is one of the best videos that TPS has ever done. When I set out to build my own pedalboard I asked myself exactly these types of questions. Result after all these years? 3 guitars (2 acoustic - Fender & Martin, and 1 electric - a Stratocaster); 1 bass (Hofner); 1 amp (Fender); 1 pedalboard (Holeyboard) and 31 total pedals of all kinds - e.g., Overdrive, utility, looper, expression, volume, wah, delay, reverb, etc. After systematically listening to and analyzing 250+ overdrives I only bought 2: Blackstone Appliances Mosfet Overdrive and Hudson Broadcast. I don't feel that I'm missing anything. The limitation drives the sonic creativity. I focus on doing - composing, recording, mixing. Great job Mick! And thanks to Five Watt World...
Bare minimum: suhr strat, taylor acoustic, (3) pedals: dual channel overdrive, boss dd-500 & f.t.t. tri-avatar chorus with 65 blackface fender princeton reverb = (6) items. Mick - this was great. I'm with you my brother: "No Strat, No Happy"
Did you guys notice how amazing the editing is this episode is? Mick (or whoever on the TPS crew does it) really knows hot to make a well produced video. The monologue never gets boring. Timing is perfect. Just a pleasure to watch.
TPS has fuelled my pedal collection explosion. The GAS is barely under control. If I’m tired when I watch your show, I might wake up having purchased the pedal de jour. It’s far too late to turn back now. You gents are culpable, but I don’t blame you. I’ve learned so much. Love you guys!
I've never seen the similarity before, but now I can't unsee it. Fantastic episode! I've had a huge board at times and a few pedals at times. I can definitely agree its all about the journey. Thanks again for all you do TPS
This was very inspiring. I really appreciate the intimate 1-on-1 style that this took, though of course I love the normal TPS format as well. Mick, playing was amazing as always. Cannot WAIT to see Dan's MMLG (most music least gear) setup!
Love the show guys. I always tell my friends to watch. Great episode today. I find that I’m always seeking that balance between too much gear and not enough.
Found this channel just a few months back. And quickly Dan & Mick have become my favorite TH-camrs. The content is amazing! Entertaining, informative. Just awesome. Mick, this one really inspired me. Your honest joyful love of all things guitar is absolutely contagious. I'm just a 48 year old bedroom metal riffer. But I love it. And I'm developing a love for blues that I didn't expect. You guys are helping me grow as a player in ways I never expected. Thanks for all that you do!!!
Gotta agree on that one. Have a Supro Black Magick Reverb, ordered a Vox AC15 hand wired and just returned it. The Supro is its own thing, doesn't sound like anything else... but has built in tube/spring reverb. Gotta have it.
@@maxpeck4154 right on, man! My first amp as a kid was a '53 Valco/Supro that my dad received bundled with a lap steel when -he- was a kid. BRILLIANT. Have been a Supro fan all my life. Edit: The Black Magick is wicked. Sorry the AC15 didn't work out!
I think gathering gear has more to do with an experimental mindset and the musical journey of finding your sound. Than about owning stuff. Alot of people sell the stuff they don't need anymore once they have found their sound or the sound they are happy with and inspires them.
Financial restrictions mean if some gear is coming in then some goes out, most times the change is for the better , but not always. .I’ve got thru 6amps and 8 guitars while my singer guitar player has same guitar and amp and no pedals .everyone makes choices .
I keep trying to explain to innocent bystanders that my current rig uses everything in the room, except for two little ten-Watt combos and three of my PH-1s, yet it wants a few more bits to hit the full note.
I agree. I have come to a point, now, in which I am getting rid of things because I know what inspires me and what is useful for what i want to write and how I want to play and so I don't need anything else outside of that.
"Find creativity from limitations" - the great Peter Gabriel is an example of that - his rule of no cymbals / hi-hats resulted in the Intruder / 80's gated reverb drum sound.
Well done Mick and it's good to see you so obviously enjoying yourself. A number of your Vlogs seem to display a noticeable level of frustration, soldering etc. Things to keep in mind to keep the blood pressure down and to keep your mind from messing with you, not exactly CBT, but it you're aware your not unarmed or defenseless. "Some will, some won't, so what, next." Learned that at a sales seminar, used for decades in sales and customer service, still use for the last decade as a guitar tech. " Nothing you will ever do matters, so the only thing that matters is what you do." TV Show Angel. I think Keith did a Strat,Tele, LP and 335 4 electrics which will cover most of most players needs. I seem to remember you and Dan doing something similar. I lived in a basement apartment for 5 ish years and moved to a much larger place a few months after moving my couch into the kitchen stood on end because I needed the extra space for the guitars and cabs I had acquired. I'm better now, really. Again great to see you playing in that zone where at times I would not have been surprised to see you laugh out loud you were exuding that much joy, just you, the guitar and getting the most out of it that you can in that moment and being totally aware.
Thanks Dan and Mick...your lessons goes even beyond guitar playing...this and Dan's Vlog on his guitar playing life is so inspiring and give us later age players motivation to play. Thank you.
Thank you Jacob. I do find it easier to play when I have a few minutes to think about it first. It’s so weird say there on stools with the cameras rolling. ;9)
@@ThatPedalShow Totally! Having seen you a lot on TPS, but not OUTSIDE of TPS, I have the feeling you have a different musical side when you are outside of the pedal noodling room (and maybe off camera too). Not better or worse, just different.
@@davidjameschamberlain it sounds great to me, and it only has six knobs. I think my Boogie had 22 knobs, EQ, a bunch of switches and an effects loop. I don’t need that much control. 👍😁
@@davidjameschamberlain I am. I had to change the cheap and nasty Chinese Celestion (with a Cannabis Rex), but that’s all, and now it sounds better and doesn’t distort at 4.
Its when I bought all my amps that everyone told me that I was crazy. We live in different worlds. They all work fine for me, but there's about three more needed.
Great vid & topic! Been collecting quotes, most of my life. One of my favs: "It's not so much what you do - more about what you do, with what you have". Full equip disclosure (most are types, not actual brands): Tele, Strat, 335 - TS, KTR, Timmy, L.A. Lady, Delay, Verb & digital multi FX - Deluxe amp, Harvard amp.
Mate, this is the best thing you’ve ever put up on TH-cam. I absolutely loved it and thanks to you and Dan, I feel like I can get almost any sound I want or need from my fingers.
It's been a long bumpy road: a 12 years old, with a Wayne's world strat and solid state vox amp. As soon as I turned the tremolo on I was hooked on sound. What ever makes you enjoy the journey is the least amount of gear. My ultimate tone was an acoustic guitar in a large hall. To the heavens 🤘
5 Watt is brilliant. Wanting IS the problem. I will often find myself longing, researching, searching out...sometimes buying gear to get a “sound”. Lately, I have found my biggest issue with my “sound”, is not getting to make it! Small apartment, wife working from home, kid going to school remote, and all my neighbors home in the apartment building. I played my P90 equipped (Lindy Fralin P92’s) Tele the other day, plugged in, and realized I HAVE a PAF’ish tone that’s pretty damn good. Good enough to drop my obsession for the “Perfect” PAF mid-range-thing-sound SEARCH. PRS 594, Hollowbody, Custom Shop Gibson, Re-fitting an Epiphone, Re-fitting a Rivolta, Throbak Pickups, correct Bridge, correct POTs, Capacitor etc. Same could be said about Fuzz? I love Guitar Tone, Guitar Porn (aka Equipment), and Playing. I want to be able to record, practice with my amp, and get useable Tones for songs. The Biggest thing right now, is NOT being able to play with others. :(
Lovely bit of playing at the end - That Pedal Show and 5 Watt are among my favourite chanels - I don't see them as mutally exclusive or more gear vs less - the trick is to just enjoy and be happy there are people out there who enjoy the same things
How many guitars is enough? - Just one more...that's always the answer. But in all seriousness, not having enough gear isn't the end of the world. The amount of sounds you can get with limited gear is astounding if the time is put in. But it's about what sounds good to you as an individual, if it sounds good to you that's all you need.
I love Keith and have been working from his philosophy for a long time. Now I actually play the guitar instead of faffing about with different pedals. By the way, Keith was my introduction to Jeff McErlain.
Love the playing at the end Mick. Have been a big fan of Keith's channel for a while and sensed a bit of spiritual kinship between the two of you, in terms of your journey. My minimum board ends up alot like your's did by the end of this ;) (but of course, I also have the even bigger gratuity board)
I built a BYOC Crown Jewel pedal last year for my brother with the fuzz boost module and that goes into his Minson M7 pedal. The two pedals are able to get nearly every sound imaginable. The Crown Jewel can replace pedals like the Klon, Tube Screamers, Prince of Tone, Rat or any overdrive ever made or get a new unique overdrive sound. The Minson M7 pedal has simple one knob control with 7 effects (delay has more control). It has compression, two drives, modulation, delay, reverb and boost/cut. Two pedals with nearly every sound possible.
I really enjoyed this one. I absolutely love my pedals and the way they sound but every now and then plugging straight into an amp is a really good palate cleanse.
This is such a great video Mick! You have such an eloquent and entertaining way of wording things. And lets not forget all those great guitar tones! Really nice jam at the end, man, really nice.
Mick touched on this analogy, but gear is like a painters palette. Sure some artists work in black and grey but there’s nothing wrong with a bit of color in your life.
after suffering from gas for many years i have finally come to the realisation just this ... awesome cast lads . i feel so much better having the gas pass . life is happier and content . i have way more then i need.
Me too. After buying the ultimate telecaster, I bought three amps in a row, and I'm waiting for two more pedals to arrive, but it's just like... "k bro, you're done, time to work now". Best feeling 👌🏼
Great watch, perfect for the mid afternoon lull, stick some headphones on and wash up some dishes. Surprised the Maxon TS and Blue Fuzz Face weren't used! I think this is really good and goes with the reading you recommended at the new year about how comparison is the root of unhappiness and I love the sentiment of playing what you like, what pushes you to make more music and not giving a damn about what anyone else says!
What a jem of an episode. Lovely sounds, Mick. Listened to this on the way home in the car and watched just now. Had a similar play at minimalism during lockdown mkI: Xotic AC+ > TC Nova Mod > Flashback X4 > Big Sky > Laney LC30 and Fender Reverb Deluxe II (Rivera era). Was perfect, but for the lack of a wah. And a tuner. And an expression pedal. And more gain stages.......
My favorite part about gear? You can constantly change it! Some days I plug my 335 into my Princeton reverb and, well, does it get any sweeter? Other days a Leslie pedal, fuzz face and octavia into a plexi is pure bliss. Some days a tweed Harvard and tele is all there ever needed to be. But also, I cut my teeth gigging a peavey classic 30 or hot rod deville with a boss tu2, fulltone full drive II, big box rat, mxr CC and boss dd6. That rig still stands and sometimes I go back to it since its home. Great video
Beyond the happy wonders of the Internet regarding TPS, 5 Watt World - and so many of the rest of you - is the true joy of finding out you know each other or have recently met. What a nice pair. There is now a 6 degrees or less of separation. Jeff Macerlain, Brett Papa, Rick Beato, Rhett, Keith, Tim Pierce and the TPS boys. I barely scratched the surface of how its all connected. That is a beautiful thing, this new world born out of necessity and a give to the rest of us. Great show, killer playing, great sounds!
Mick just goes full beast mode at 17:00. He even looks at the camera like “Yes, this is the filthiest, most glorious thing you’ve heard all year. You’re welcome.”
I was sitting waiting for the Klon.. seriously though this has given me pause for thought. How much time do I spend futzing around with gear to avoid practice. Hmmm. Great video...also gonna go check out 5 watt world
This is wonderful. I just built my second platform for my pedals. I started on a basic wood 12"x25" scrap setup when I picked my guitar up again after 9 years of it being locked away or displayed as a piece of art. My pedal collection jumped from 4 pedals to now a board with 16 pedals and a volume pedal and several stashed away on a shelf. I went from 2 guitars to 5. two of the pedals I have on my board I built myself because there was a specific sound I wanted (one being a Sola Sound Tone Bender MkII Professional). The journey that has lead me here, remembering stuff and learning new stuff and having the tone palate available to play with and explore has been amazing. I look forward to seeing where my journey goes from here.
Brilliant! The best rig is the one that makes you happy and inspired, whatever that is. I had a revelation about a year ago feeling really uninspired, having way too much gear and always wanting that one extra thing. Ended up selling everything, kept one acoustic, two electrics, one amp, 6 pedals and a spring reverb tank and really took the time to actually get to know my gear, to get a tone that says what I want to say and building a connection with what I have. Never felt so inspired.
Great outtro. I was playing it really loud, went to close the window and noticed my neighbour across the road was listening through their window and dancing wearing just a fur coat and lingerie. I’ll never look at him the same way again..
Mick, this may be my favorite of all you vlogs so far. It was honest, genuine and full of philosophical nuggets of wisdom. Knocked it out of the park with this one! And the bonus: very tasty playing at the end. So well done my friend! Shout out to keith! Love him too!
The best guitar sound to me is the best guitar sound to you. Agh, see what I did there. Very cool. Would ask for more, if I could! Haha. I dig any philosophy related material. So, there’s that too. Cheers!
I discovered TPS at the beginning of 2020, and I’ve enjoyed the encyclopaedic and wonderful resource that it is, the knowledge, the humour, the feeling of community, and lashings of lush pedals! This episode got me right in the feels, created with heartfelt sentiment, just really really great work! I realise like I sound like a total fan boy, but credit where credit is due, I hope someone from the channel reads this and gets a fraction of the good vibes that TPS has given me! KUDOS💥!!!
Thanks so much Murray. Mick here. Super kind of you to say, but most of all, we’re just glad you enjoy what we do here. Thanks man, greatly appreciated!
This one feels like two worlds colliding. Keith Williams is asking some very good and thoughtful questions. We all should ask ourselves what we are trying to do. A little reflection is always a good idea, and it might help us to maintain our bank balance.
I think I reached the ‘enough’ point just recently where, if I’m totally honest with myself, I can’t envisage I’d ever genuinely need anything else. Admitting that is actually quite a weird and uncomfortable feeling because I know I’ll inevitably bullshit myself into buying more stuff down the line. I’m ashamed of future me 🤦
I played for years happily with my Explorer plugged into my Engl. Didn't even use neck pickup or clean channel, just hi-gain rythm fun. To be fair, i sometimes used a Boss noise gate pedal because my old Engl didn't have one buildt in. But i also enjoy all the effects pedals i have now.
It's like the scene from The Jerk. "I don't need anything. Nothing. I don't-- OK I need this. But that's ALL I need. Just this ashtray. I don't need anything else -- and this remote control. The remote control and the ashtray and that's it. And this chair. But that's IT. The ashtray, the remote control and the chair. I don't nee OK I need this. And this thermos. And this, but that's IT.
There's always room for "one-more-guitar!" Is what Greg Koch said. I agree. Besides, a different guitar puts me in another frame of mind, inspiring me in a certain way.
That was really inspiring. Both the playing and the journey. It's really got me thinking about what I can cut ✂️ out. I always feel guilty about shelving a pedal that cost a lot and that I really thought I needed. Got some thinking to do. Mick, the jam at the end was epic! Thank you for that.
What a fantastic video I feel very fortunate to have found the end of my “journey” at 27 custom princeton with a 12 inch greenback a tumnus, Timmy, mxr, booster, carbon copy, and the mxr looper and a few teles I built with my grandfather

How much do I need... somewhere between more than I have and Joe Bonamassa’s tweed collection 🤣

"we're interested in helping you get the most music, from the least amount of gear"
The worst tagline on TH-cam. Nothing that channel does cares about helping you with music, and doesn't show anything that would lead to that. He shows nothing but massive amounts of gear. I tell him it might as well be "we're interested in helping you bake amazing brownies.....on today's video, we talk about all the gear from the past 70 years.....this...is 5 watt world"
So stupid
Keith literally inspired my entire rig. He's the most underrated guitar TH-camr on the platform IMHO.
Same, with me. Keith helped me reign in my gear hunger
Neither Five Watt or TPS can be rated highly enough. There isn't a mechanism for properly acknowledging their value. "Priceless" is a decent term, and yet... doesn't quite hit the mark. Cheers!

Keith’s channel is brilliant. I love the way he presents too... super straight, no drama, informative.
As I sat down to watch this episode the doorbell went... another overdrive pedal delivered 😂
Yes! N+1 baby?
Hahahahaha that’s hilarious
I’ve wanted a Gigrig since starting to watch this channel years ago, but now because of this editing style I want it to come with lights that highlight which pedals are on.
Hahahah!!! Didn’t Dan tell you it does that too? Hahahaa!
I want a quarter master
And overhead spotlights for each pedal when used
I appreciate everything about how Mick explained his point.
I’m just a 20 year old kid from Japan,(mixed race, long story)
and if you guys happen to read this by any chance (Dan & Mick) please know that what you guys are doing inspire so many people like me who love playing guitar and want to create inspiring sounds out of our instrument.
Most of all, that anything we do might provide any inspiration at all for you to be passionate about playing.
Thanks Kannon, and the very very best to you! Mick (and Dan!)
After 40 years of guitar playing (and lots of gear passing by) I now settled to a small amount of gear that i found and kept over the years.
I don't think I've bought anything for the last 2-3 years.
Some of my "rules" are:
- One good guitar per type. Strat, Telecaster, 335, LP and LP Jr. (and a cheap bass for my recordings)
- A small valve amp with really good speakers (1x12" plus a 4x12")
- Tuner, boost, 2xsoft clipping OD, Ditto looper and reverb.
- Keep the gear in good condition. Change the strings, do set up, good tubes, biased, good quality cables etc
- Keep the room clean.
@@ThatPedalShow I also don’t think there is anything inconsistent with what Keith is asking - having gone through a few of his vids (thanks for making me aware!) I sort of boil down his point(s) to:
- Understand what you are trying to do, what activity you are trying to engage in.
This, exactly. It's not just guitar players, but most people seem to be overly concerned about what other people do.
@@ThatPedalShow Doesn't Clapton have a 911?
As much as I miss the 'main' TPS shows I'm also loving these vlogs! Thanks for continuing to make great videos in this weird time!
Thanks Callum!
I prefer the vlogs, but apparently they are a lot more work to make. Pity.
I don’t think it’s the amount of gear. It’s the build and sound quality. I can honestly say , buying great gear has progressed my playing far more than my old line 6 spider turned to a low volume. Having the right gear to get the sound that’s in your head into reality is paramount.
Totally this. I sound waaaaaay better on good gear, loud. Play better too. Just do. Can’t change it!
I'm running out of ways to tell my wife how this newest guitar is totally different from the rest of my guitars.
Look harder at your own truth around that buddy?!
“But honey this one’s RED”
Just tell her that each one inspires you to play something different, to play differently. It's about the attitude it inspires in you more than it is about the exact sound it makes.
It will make you play better.
Dude same. I told her I wanted a 2nd Strat to keep in Eb. She said well can’t you just tune the other one down?
Well yes, but
I love the explanation in this video.
For sure. And if you really want it back but it again and remember!
That’s a great way to look at it!

That’s awesome K. Nice one!

Love the show guys. I always tell my friends to watch. Great episode today. I find that I’m always seeking that balance between too much gear and not enough.

Yup. I've adapted the philosophy of getting rid of anything I haven't used for a recording or a band practice in more than 3-4 months.
"Find creativity from limitations" - the great Peter Gabriel is an example of that - his rule of no cymbals / hi-hats resulted in the Intruder / 80's gated reverb drum sound.
Well done Mick and it's good to see you so obviously enjoying yourself.

If my guitar collection echoed where I am as a player I'd only own a harmonica as I both suck and blow
Hahahah!!!! Eloquence entirely. I think we can all relate to that. :0)
I love Keith and have been working from his philosophy for a long time. Now I actually play the guitar instead of faffing about with different pedals. By the way, Keith was my introduction to Jeff McErlain.
yes also found Jeff from Keith's channel. Both essential watching
It's really amazing the spectrum of tone a decent tube amp can provide just adjusting the volume and tone on your guitar

Mick touched on this analogy, but gear is like a painters palette. Sure some artists work in black and grey but there’s nothing wrong with a bit of color in your life.

As Keith W. has also very accurately said - spending your extra cash on lessons rather than gear will help you get more out of Music!
"Not doing because we dont have", hit right to da core

Love it!
Hey Mick - I've been listening to Jeff Beck's "Wired" a lot lately - and your closing, very musical music is not out of place in that company! Kudos!
Bloody hell fire! I’ll take it. Thank you. But I shall also offer a small bow in Jeffers’ direction. For he is master.
Great outtro. I was playing it really loud, went to close the window and noticed my neighbour across the road was listening through their window and dancing wearing just a fur coat and lingerie. I’ll never look at him the same way again..
Hahahahahahah!!!! Hahahahahhahahahah!!!!
A telecaster, a hot rod deluxe and a HX effects is all I'd ever need
Mick, this may be my favorite of all you vlogs so far. It was honest, genuine and full of philosophical nuggets of wisdom. Knocked it out of the park with this one! And the bonus: very tasty playing at the end. So well done my friend! Shout out to keith! Love him too!
I love both your channels! I've been recording w a 1 watt Supro Blues King 8, Soul Food, Hall of Fame & a Shure 57. It's amazing. I don't gig.
"Not doing because we don't have" If ever I were to have a catch phrase printed on a tee shirt, I that would be it. My biggest excuse every damn day.
Powerful lessons 🔥
The best guitar sound to me is the best guitar sound to you.
Agh, see what I did there.
Very cool. Would ask for more, if I could! Haha.
I dig any philosophy related material. So, there’s that too.
Cheers!
Ha! I deliberately included the octave because so many people hate it. I LOVE IT! :0)
@@ThatPedalShow I’m the same way. It’s a need.
Thanks David
I think I reached the ‘enough’ point just recently where, if I’m totally honest with myself, I can’t envisage I’d ever genuinely need anything else. Admitting that is actually quite a weird and uncomfortable feeling because I know I’ll inevitably bullshit myself into buying more stuff down the line. I’m ashamed of future me 🤦
"WANT, not NEED. i don't need anything", Mr. C (Twin Peaks)
Mr. Toad from The Wind in the Willows is my spirit animal! Say, that Free The Tone Future Factory sounds might nice 😍😍😍😂
Ayup. Toad is the man. 🤘
Nice! Especially the playing at the end. Man, I love Guitar sounds too!
"The best guitar sound to you, is the best guitar sound" is the best guitar truth.
