    Gents, I just spent three glorious days at a workshop in Indiana with Robben Ford, Jeff McErlain, John Jorgenson, and a great group of students. Midway through a presentation they name-dropped, paused, HONKED an imaginary horn, and continued. Everyone caught it. You guys are crushing it! Congrats!

    I`ve approached this journey step by step: 1. play your guitar without amp 2. play it with somekind of amp 3. try to understand what kind of sounds you tend to navigate 4. try these different types of od:s, distortions, boosters 5. add modulations 6. mix the order 7. find a wormhole and dig deep :) AND play time to time without any pedals, give some time and space to your brains and then, start again :) Great episode again - I`ve learned so much from you guys during the years! Cheers from Finland!

      1.) Research
      2.) Buy what you want/need
      If you're buying and selling/trading ODs a lot then that's either your hobby - trying them out for a while and trading them - or you're an idiot.

      Archie 3K - It’s one thing to research, another thing to try (in a store), try at home, try at rehearsal, try at a gig. Searching for the right tone might be easy for some and for others it’s not. Lighten up and let people experience their own journey in tone.

    Two things I want to say about this episode.
    1. thank you for sharing all this important stuff! After watching many many episodes of TPS I really feel confident with all that conceptions of gain, tone and guitar in general. So much better and more informative than any regular gear demo can ever be.
    2. this episode was one of those that really got me. Immediately after I watched it, I picked up my guitar and played.
    You really inspire me and many others and in my opinion that's the most important thing.
    Thank you and keep it up, cheers!

Recently got my first valve amp (DSL1CR) and I find myself mostly driving the classic gain channel with a lovely, crunchy rhythm tone. I have been really wondering about what to do about a solo tone. Now comes the search for a treble booster. You guys are fabulous.

    Having my Graphic EQs immediately after the drive pedals I can voice the drive sounds to where the pedals sound way more homogenous. Since I started using 2 EQs I've quit buying a lot of different drives. Most important thing seem to be amount and rate of saturation and how it responds to the guitar volume knob and touch.

    • @utopia_effects
      @utopia_effects 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      A good EQ can mimic the EQ thing happening in many overdrives, but from my experience they can't do anything about the compression and the clipping. Also when you have an EQ after an overdrive that dumps bass and treble, like a tubescreamer for instance, it is hard to introduce those frequencies back, it's like trying to recover audio information that isn't there anymore.

    • @Micky-yo3ng
      @Micky-yo3ng 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I use EQ for boost too, very versatile. Vinicus’s comment is true too, but you may not want to change the pedal character. David Gilmour used an EQ on each overdrive/fuzz/distortion and gaffa taped them together to turn both pedals on at once

    • @mattgilbert7347
      @mattgilbert7347 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've considered adding a second EQ, I have one spare. Currently using the standard GE-7 post-Muff (and post-gain in general but it's important for how I want my big muff to work) so that I can get the midrange to where I need it, bit of a volume boost if I need it. With the gain on the Muff rolled back to around 1-2 o'clock and an OD like a blues driver in front, It takes a smooth "classic Muff" sound into something that almost resembles the sound you'd get if I cranked the amp, maxed it out and then blended (mixed) that sound with the sound of the Muff into the amp set relatively clean.
      It's tricky stuff.

  • @martinscholes9314
    @martinscholes9314 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    After faffing around for years I've realised that recording and live sounds /use are almost 2 different sounds and require different tones. Mostly I'm a live player these days so a solid early ac/dc core tone from my Orange thunder with a tube screamer is THE live sound. Knock the volume down for cleans because no one wants pure clean playing live.
    Thanks to your fabulous advice I've learnt how to use the effects loop properly for solo boost and modulation, delay etc. I can't thank you enough 🎸🎸🤘🏻🤘🏻🇬🇧🇬🇧🦄🦄

  • @theimmediate2536

    This video perfectly outlines what it has taken me 2 years to learn about my Strymon Riverside, in terms of gain-stacking (Boss EQ pedal into the Riverside as a treble boost) into an overdriven amp (Vox AC15 on normal channel)... basically, there isn't a really a clean clean on the AC15.
    The Riverside is really flexible in these situations because of its excellent eq / boost options. And the favourite switch.
    Don't care as to its digital provenance, it's flexible and sounds really really great.

  • @Craig_Fussell
    @Craig_Fussell 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Good points about “VSTs.” They are the culmination of human interactions (technique) and gear. To me, the “tone” can be replicated with gear, but “sound” is a different thing. EC, JH, DG, SRV, EVH, BFG, etc. will “sound” like themselves regardless of the gear they’re using because of their personal techniques. That’s why, for example, SRV has a similar “sound” to Albert King using drastically different gear. ✌🏻🎸

    Hi guys. Only halfway through and it's your best organised, most informative and on point episode yet. You two are ready to write the best selling guitar book of all time. Put this in print, where you have examples of specific amp types, guitars and pedals and give detailed instructions about how to build a sound for each combination. Do the same with other effects/ wet- dry rigs etc too and have all the steps on a CD or other digital format that demonstrates each step. It'd be such a popular reference/ resource. You'd sell them by the truck load.

    Corgan has pretty consistently been a single coil guy. I remember one of his main Strats had Fender Lace Sensors (SIlver, Gold, Red, front to back). Siamese Dream is a guitar masterpiece. Maybe the best guitar album of the 90's. Brian May's influence is *heavy* & in the best way. I think they used just about every piece of gear imaginable on that album, but "the sound" people usually associate with this era of SP is an IC Muff into a JCM 800 modded with KT88's

  • @MrNeilfatmonkey

    The problem with using your volume knob to regulate volume with a super gainy amp, in my experience, is that it rarely makes it much quieter but does remove a lot of the gain. You end up sounding like AC/DC on the verses and Metallica on the solos with no real appreciable difference in volume. Couple that with playing hard rock in a 2 guitar band and the clean boost into the effects loop is absolutely the way forward for a volume boost for solos, plus your core tone remains unchanged.
    The other option of course is to get an amp with 2 master volumes between which you can switch, like the Kraken. I loved my Kraken. Gain 1 channel is sublime.
    Stirling work, guys. Killer tones. Great, informative content. Much love to you.

    Great video. I get what you’re saying about trying to sound like, but I think there are at least two areas where it has genuine merit. Most of us go through various stages of hero worship as we learn and trying to sound like guitar hero x; though ultimately futile, it encourages practice and learning new techniques. A hell of a lot of us never really get to play out as ourselves, whether that’s because like me you’re skills are ordinary and you’re as creative as a box of rocks, or some other reason, if you’re having fun playing a set list of covers in a pub, the audience is less likely to throw peanuts and glasses at you if you sound at least a bit like the studio version they know and love.

    I always think of my drives in terms of “amount” and “style”. I use a cali76, a tubescreamer, a king of tone and a zendrive.
    The cali sounds like it doesn’t belong there but it occupies the same “this adds compression and character” spot in my mind. From there, it’s a matter of combining and building “that sound I’m thinking of”. They’re all sensibly set and from there I have them combined and ordered in different ways through my switcher. Core clean is the king of tone boost. Core drive is the cali into the king of tone. “Dumbly lead” is the cali into the zendrive. If you think of your “compression and gain adding effects” by style and amount, it helps when you’re looking to build those sounds later on. Im sure this all sounds very esoteric to someone who plugs a ts808 into their amp and lets it rip (which is a GREAT way to go, btw). It’s just that having a few drive options going into a bassman (or similarly pedal friendly amp) gives you some room to sculpt and build. Plus, for work I have to cover styles from 80s pop up to pantera...sometimes on the same gig. So there’s that factor as well...

    Great show fellas. For a lot of us with limited board space and budgets, buying a quality clean boost to put at the end of your gain stack, and a combo pedal, say like a D&M drive, that you can utilize a boost at the front of your gain stage, allows you the best of both worlds. Essentially three pedals for the cost and space of 2, and gives you a boost at the end and a gain push at the beginning.

    With the explosion in drive pedals, what a timely video! I follow a lot of the pedal makers on TH-cam (won't mention names because everyone will honk the horn) and they are an incredibly warm, humble, affable, honest set of guys who are not afraid to praise each others' products, but I continually come back to you for a solid grounding, Dan and Mick.

    I know that a show about setting up for live gig would so many tangents that might not be feasible but amp stage placement, mics and amps, vocal mics, monitors, monitor mixes, stage volume, FOH volumes, etc. These topics are all very interesting and then basically dives back into last weeks show about 2 guitars playing together. Hey why not a multipart series featuring the setup and gig of the TPS Band? As always, my wife blames you two for my addiction but keep up the good work!

    Say you run multiple overdrive and distortion pedals (like a klon, tubescreamer, and rat) and you want to introduce a dual pedal to your board (like DM Drive, the Dane, Duellist, or Sweet Tea), where should you put the dual pedal in your signal order? Beginning? End? Or based on the gain level (of side A, B, or combined?) Best regards.

    I'm going to make a horrible namedrop, but your initial video with Mr. Timmons {horn blast} has really informed me about the sounds I like to look for in a gain box. Not necessarily from the pedal aspect, but from the sound coming from the player himself. He really does understand gain structure.

    That Big Muff is the Smashing Pumkins pedal. Great sound...

  • @markedwards7721
    @markedwards7721 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Mick, you said near the end, just get a tube screamer, a Marshall Governor, a fuzz, and a booster. I've heard you guys say before, place a tube screamer after your overdrive to lop off bass for so leads you don't interfere with bass guitar.. Now the Marshall Governor "sounds like a cranked JTM-45". Now couple that with placing the fuzz first because it wants to see the guitar. Now I assume you meant the boost pedal is meant to boost into the guitar amp and not the overdrive/distortion pedal. So set your board up as guitar>fuzz>Governor>TS9>Clean Boost>Amp. Now the "Booster" could be ==> A Klon, a MXR Micro-Amp, an EP-Booster, a TC Spark-Booster, etc. If you use an Octave pedal, I presume it is before or combined with the fuzz. The basic formula is: fuzz>overdrive(s)>TS9>Boost. Now, fuzz>overdrive is your tone stack, and TS9>Boost is your lead stack. Noting in Gilmour's rigs, he used Big Muff for fuzz and Tube Driver for overdrive, and Graphic EQ instead of TS9, and then clean-boost after his modulation pedals which were uni-vibe and chorus, but before his volume pedal at front end of his delays. Am I correct?

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is no correct. First first, yes. ‘Most’ people do it that way but by no means everybody. Some people like their boosts before their overdrives - Dan for example. Some people prefer them after - me for example. But it really depends what tone and texture you’re going for. A treble booster basically must go before other stuff. But I like my Klon last in line. So try to stop thinking ‘best’ and ‘should’ and start asking what you want it to sound and feel like. Cheers!

    I think it is very important for you to address GAS. It is a debilitating condition we tend to fall into, and once you start, its the equivalanet of guitar crack. I for one have fallen deeply into GAS, and I am a lacking guitarist. Please help me find my way out of this condition, of help me accept my faults! I think GAS should be some type of TPS shirt/logo, since it impacts all of us. Help us manage this condition!

    Brilliant episode guide for all that need to understand how to use and choose your desired overdrive pedals with your given guitar setup, great explanations and demos of all different types of drives you can utilise going into clean or dirty amps, everyone needs to realise that each individuals setup will be different and is dependant on the guitar you are using, amp and pedals, so just because your mate may have a certain pedal you love the sound of, and you then buy the same pedal and wonder why it doesn’t sound exactly the same as what you had previously heard, it’s all down to full rig setup and utilising all the input/output/gain/EQ stages to develop and create the overall tone, never just expect to just plug the pedal in straight away and it sound as you had expected, you have to dial in, edit and work with your gear to get that desired sound.
    Thanks gents always a great show whatever the topic.

    I gotta say, I've learned so much from you guys. Thanks for the genuine approach you take. You've helped me on my pedal journey and I've learned 3 thing: gear combinations matter (find a baseline!), Pedals are only as good as their ability to make you forget they are there (i.e. getting rid of the middleman) and finally, learn what you like while staying open (never good versus bad---just different).

    This is a master class for the non expert ( which is difficult to achieve and usually a contradiction in terms) , I have been playing over 30 years experimenting through trial and error, reading and listening to everything I could lay my hands on, the difference here is you separated the concepts and gave immediate demos into very different Amps. This goes to the top of my pedal explanation videos. I am pleased you listed all the sections. This is now my go to video as I will need to view it many times finding something new each time. For the first time all the jargon made sense. Well done for such an educational video. Best Steve.

    I can't get over how my dad bought me a boss sd-1 when I got my first electric guitar and how it's still my favourite overdrive pedal. I've tried other stuff, other classics etc, I've tried tweaking them. I might start thinking "ah, but if only I had that hot, crackling Marshall kind of rock sound from all these pedals and this guitar" until I remember the sd-1. The moment I step on it, that's the sound. That's the sound that screams rock to me, don't even need to adjust it much. I love it and I can't fathom how it stroke home the first try. It could've been a tubescreamer, which is supposedly very close to the circuit, but that I don't fully understand to this date.
    Just remembered that when you tried getting to the kraken's british, cranked marshall sound. Sd-1 is the pedal that does that for me. Although Tone City's Golden Plexi caught me by surprise. What a cheap and raw, unique plexi rock sound. Just not tweakable. But I love one trick ponys anyway. There are other pedals for other sounds though, like the ep booster is so lovely I want to have it always on just like Page had his echoplex coloring the sound. And then there's klon things like Tumnus, I've got to get one. It's such a nice, different kind of tone.
    But I ramble once again. Thanks for making these videos, they speak to me in so many ways, they inspire. Please don't feel the need to keep them "short", the more you get into something, the more exciting it gets and therefore the longer the video becomes, the better it is.

    You guys ARE allowed to drop the D&M Drive onto the board in these videos, where appropriate, you know.
    No ones going to hold it against you. (Well maybe a couple of Trolls)
    It's a damn good dual-sided pedal with wide flexibility.
    I like to extend the choices by having another “Mick Side”/Screamer'ish mid-pushed pedal Before the D&M (Dan>Mick). OR one my favourite low gains, Lightspeed / Looking Glass > Dan (set to medium drive) > Mick (set to Boost with light drive).
    An extraordinary thing about Mr Gilmour is that one tends to think of his guitar playing and sound as tastefully reserved,
    Gives one the impression of sensitivity and refined moderation.
    But whenone stops tripping and focus closely on what he's doing, maybe read a thing or two about his equipment; he's actually giving it serious welly, almost brutally at times, with some Heavy toys.
    His art is in putting those sounds precisely in the perfect place in the music.
    The mixing / production contributes massively to the effect of subtlety too of course.
    Having been a bass player for most of my life I didn't really analyse what he was doing., I'd just take it in and enjoy it all.
    Wasn't until I started to concentrate on playing thin string guitars, as an old man, that I began to notice the puzzle.
    Long comment for a long video ...

    Your comments about the thousands of overdrive options ring true here, even 15 years ago when I made my last change the landscape was huge.
    Still running a Diamond J-Drive TR since 2006 - but then I haven't changed my amp since then either! They just work really well together.
    What could be interesting as a follow-up video is something focused on building sounds for hollow-body guitars, and working with the differing interactions.

    I'd love to see you guys play through/talk about solid state amplifiers, specifically in relation to gain-staging. I think there are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to solid state amps in general, especially when it comes to dirtying them up. I run a JC-120, probably the cleanest amp ever, and push some serious gain through it; I use an OCD clone as my always-on clean base tone, and stack from there with medium and high gain drives as well as a Muff clone for fuzz. People are always really surprised at and complementary of my tone "despite" running a solid state amp (whatever that means). I suppose people aren't used to seeing SS amps used in that fashion. I've got an AC15 that I love and it surely has its place, but my Jazz Chorus is my #1 and will be for a long time. Great vid as always gentlemen, cheers from WNY!
