This series is super entertaining. Maybe on suggestion: A rig in between dirt cheap and overly expensive, for the working man musician. A rig that is versatile for gigging, rehearsing and practise. I'd love your educational take on this. If you were a guitarist in a band that plays mostly small clubs, and you were to start over, which essential gear would you choose?
Yeah that would be great. One guitar? I wonder whether they'd recommend something traditional like a Blues Jr and a Tele or think digital and versatile like an HSS strat with a THR100 or something like a Blackstar Silverline...would be a good episode.
For a standard, Fender inspired blues/rock/flexible rig, I think a Fender American Performer of your choice and a Bassbreaker 30R would be a great start, plus a selection of pedals to your tastes, probably a versatile OD/Distortion (1981 DRV?), mod of some sort, and a delay (maybe?)
Den I//Noble Russkie I’d have the American Performer Tele with the split coil humbucker in the neck, the THR100 and drive, reverb, delay, distortion and tuner pedal. Fully reliable, giggable and insanely flexible rig for $3k US or so.
@@jimmythefish Those THRs are amazing amps, can't fault you there!! For a long time I was considering using one for my stereo rig before I decided on a JC40. I did keep my pedal selection to 3 pedals, as per the brief though ;)
I agree! Something like a Squier guitar, with a blues junior, with a mix of like MXR and boss or tone city pedals. That makes a nice in between and will give great sounds. I would love to see Dan and Mick play that setup though.

If you’ve got the cash splash it, and you should not be embarrassed. Fender all the way, the Strat & the Two Rock or the Tele & the Two Rock I’d be very happy with either. Brilliant video Dan & Mick. 👍🏻😎👊🏻
Avid watcher of the show for ages. The mutual respect and genuine friendship Mick and Dan have between each other are just magically. To see two people that love what they are doing and emotionally moved by each others playing is everything that music should be and should bring to the world. Thank you so much for this raw energy and passion on display with your dream rigs. It's also a reminder of how much there is to discover and learn to put into my own playing.
Mick, I'm really smitten with the finish on the '61 Strat and decided to do a bit of digging and found that the defined stages of sunburst wasn't uncommon during the 60's. Indeed there is a '64 Strat in the Guitar mag "Stratocaster Bible" that clearly shows the three black/red/amber colours (although really worn) almost identical to yours. Whoever did the refinish on the '61 did a really good job. I think it's gorgeous and sounds celestial.
Dan's impression when Mick plays = priceless. You probably can't be any more emotional, without shedding a tear. It's heart warming to witness such a genuine liking to... Well, anything. Keep up the awesome work guys, and have a great new year!
Love coming back to older TPS videos like this, when mick did the divebomb thing and looked at dan, just the unashamed fun in that moment is why I love this video!
I remember Mick saying how he struggled sometimes with various aspects of guitar, looking depressed as he discussed it. Now that look on his face, the one that says 'I found a little piece of guitar tone nirvana.' Best I've heard you sound Mick! As an aside, considered getting the custom shop to take a look at that Strat? Could be worth it, especially given how happy you looked playing it.
This reinforces everything I have learned - a guitar NEEDS to be loud, or at least "loud enough" so that the whole resonant feedback thing happens. Mick's tone at 42:25 with the Klon engaged was just SO good (remember this is an old weak single coil guitar) and when you get the sound and feel that you need, suddenly you really DO play better, which explains why he then went off on a Jimi trip probably without even realising it :O) This brings us back to the whole "save your hearing" thing. If the price of seeing true beauty was to slowly go blind, would you pay it? You can wear glasses which dull your eyesight, but then you might not see everything. Hmmm.... maybe with the right ear protection you can have it all.... Happy New Year to all at TPS, and subscribers!
Loved this episode! The biggest difference I'm hearing between the vintage guitars and your old faithfuls is clarity. The vintage guitars just have great clarity and note separation across the entire range. Both red and blue get a little muddy, blue falters a bit more. This is especially true when gain comes in. The vintage guitars still sound crisp to where all the sounds are still there. Who knows why that is the case, but that's what I'm hearing.
Absolutely insane 😭😭 . Dan - I remember that telecaster and felt the same way - that’s a special one. Mick - that rig is otherworldly . It mixes simplicity and elegance in the best way.
Even though these setups are completely unattainable to most everyone, I found this your most inspiring episode yet! I LOVE hearing and seeing your reactions, getting so fired up by your own sounds. Thank you for this one!
Watching some old videos a year later, I miss watching you guys just hang out and make a bunch of noise in the room. Hoping you’re able to get back in together soon!
Absolutely the best episode, bar non. Great tone and great playing! My favorite part was watching each reaction, comparing their main axes to each vintage guitar. We could clearly hear what you were reacting to as well. With that said, a 100 watt amp humming (does not need to be anywhere near 10), will always put to shame a low wattage stage compatible amp of today. Great job guys, you are the best.
After an event like this, (not just a show, but an event) with all the raw emotion flowing around, I would be totally fine with the two of you having a hug and a cry together. Because things like this are very special.
Never heard Mick use so much gain.....it sounded GREAT, and he was controlling it so well....and when he kicked in the fuzz...wonderful!!!!!!!!! More please!!!!!!
“tragically hilarious” - you said it! Self-indulgent yes - but your self-indulgence allows us the experience these sonic hights without spending similar bucks... so in a way your providing a public service 😃

I don't need a Matchless I can't afford a Matchless I don't need a Matchless I can't afford a Matchless... I will dream about that amp
Years ago I had the amazing good fortune to hang out with Buddy Guy after a show (amazingly twice!) and I started going on about his amps and guitars. He listened to me patiently with a smile on his face. When I had finished he complimented me on my attention to his gear, but then stuck his hand in my face palm first with his fingers spread out wide and said "Son, it is in the hands, not in the equipment." It was great advice from a blues legend to a guitarist not yet 20 (I'm 53 now) and I took it to heart. Dont get me wrong, I have accumulated a bunch gear over the years, haha. That said, even the best gear will sound like crap if you cannot play well. It is in the hands, not in the equipment.
I agree for the most part. Mick here. If it ain’t in the hands the gear won’t help. But if it is in the hands.... the gear can take good to great. And strongly resisting the urge to say Mr Guy’s later career tone was really not comparable with his earlier days. Gulp. Sacrilege.
@@ThatPedalShow Hey Mick! Of course I became a lifelong fan of his after hanging with him twice (Jr. Wells too!). I have seen him over a dozen times in concert, the most recent time was this year, 2019. I agree with your observation about Buddy's later tone. It is almost all treble. When I met him he was playing a Guild semi hollow body through a Marshall stack. No idea what he's been playing through these days but t sure is not a Marshall. To be totally honest I have worried that he has lost his upper frequency hearing. One thing I can say - Buddy is the best showman I have ever seen. Cheers and have a happy new year!
There will be no ripping to pieces here. This is no Andertons "by breaking the bank" episode... its so far beyond that. THIS is TPS at its finest! A Showcase of all the best gear wizardry that VERY few people get to ever witness and these make it available for us to enjoy. You guys are the masters. I literally smiled so hard a tear came to my eye at one point while Mick was waist deep in "Schwangrala". A genuine thank you to the both of you for your passion alone.
Gentlemen... these are the two best guitar tones you've had on your show! And man does it show in your playing. There are no losers here... Both Dan and Mick win and win big! Just KILLER KILLER stuff!
Fun outing, as always. Agree with the observations on relative differences between Red and the '64 Tele and Blue and the '61 Strat. The analogy that comes to mind is a woodcarving of a scene: same scene, "identical" image, but one piece is more deeply carved or incised.
That was quite special all round. Here's me sitting on some very lovely Fender MB stuff, now wanting to trade the lot for just one beat-up mongrel '61!!! What a thing! I love that you watch Dan's opening 4 secs and he's all full of beans.. then at the end he's utterly spent - this is EXACTLY why I come here every week!
Mick''s rig is far away from only blues, jimi, etc. - Mike McCready and Stone Gossard form Pearl Jam would fly from Seattle to play that amp with those 3 pedals. And that strat... oh, boy! You killed it, MIck. Dan, that Tele is speaking to you. Don't hurt her feelings! Beautiful warm storm, guys! Best from Barcelona
Dan’s rig turns the Teles into thick, rich humbucker loaded guitars. Might be too much on a LP? Great tones! Mick’s rig tone is other worldly! Cheers from Las Vegas, USA.
Right, now that i have run out of tears of joy, I have to boil this down to two things: 1) That two rock, wow. Feeding back gloriously on the *clean*.... never mind the beautiful natural compression and recovery it has.. 2) That strat.....I reckon most of that tone is the pickups being very reactive, touch sensitive, probably not over potted nor over wound. Great. Did Dan put a rig together at all, I must have missed it ??
Do you know what I love about this show - you both play in such different styles, Mick so silky and bluesy - and Dan, I have to say, is one of the most underrated players on TH-cam in my opinion - so expressive. Merry Xmas guys.
As much as I enjoyed the playing, and the epic tones, I really enjoyed watching Mick and Dan's expressions when the other was playing. They were having so much fun, and just reveling in the sound.
So, I have a '61 Brownface Deluxe... but my $130 Joyo Bluejay is what I am inspired by most of the time. This video and the previous really do show what you are always trying to say: Whatever makes you play and enjoy playing. If someone came into the video not having seen the title or the challenge, they would be able to see these guys are inspired playing and neither of you would say there was a price associated with that. Something for fun is to note the difference in the playing for both of you in the beginning vs toward the end... blossom is the word that comes to mind.
And two years later you both own the guitars! Tremendous.
Ha! Never thought of that 👍
I'm not up to date with vintage guitar prices, but imagine they would go for a lot more than they were quoting in this video!

It was great advice from a blues legend to a guitarist not yet 20 (I'm 53 now) and I took it to heart.
Buy a rig for each other, spend to impress.
Cheers Marc :))
Dan's mastery of progressions and voicings is just stunning...
And his hair after the emotional breakdown... Hah!
Some of micks best playing ever forsure. That little lead line with the whammy bar and all the pedals on made me smile and audibly giggle with joy
I love how dans faces are either like he’s watching his first kid being born or he just cause a will of something absolutely horrendous
Dan had a spiritual experience from this. Seriously some of the best time I’ve heard in my life...
“It’s the whole point of the whole thing, to be connected.” Amen.
Also, holy smokes, 111db!
Gentlemen... these are the two best guitar tones you've had on your show! And man does it show in your playing. There are no losers here... Both Dan and Mick win and win big! Just KILLER KILLER stuff!
I just need to warm up my delay - Dan Steinhardt 2019
T-shirt!
@@Cheguebuddha I would definitely buy one of those!
@@felixapps5523 me too!!
mee too thats ace
can you send me the time code?
Fun outing, as always. Agree with the observations on relative differences between Red and the '64 Tele and Blue and the '61 Strat. The analogy that comes to mind is a woodcarving of a scene: same scene, "identical" image, but one piece is more deeply carved or incised.
Holy shit, Mick. Best I think I've ever heard you. And great playing man. You're clearly inspired.
Both brilliant but, man, Mick, the dynamics, some of that sound made me get up and do a little jig of joy in my kitchen. GREAT work.
I’m not a Strat guy, but Jesus H. Christmas those fuzz tones from Mick were unreal.
I felt there same way
Dan’s rig turns the Teles into thick, rich humbucker loaded guitars. Might be too much on a LP? Great tones! Mick’s rig tone is other worldly! Cheers from Las Vegas, USA.
Feel like the next version of this challenge has to be a duet of Most Versatile & Most Inspiring.
Right, now that i have run out of tears of joy, I have to boil this down to two things:
1) That two rock, wow.
2nd Dan's playing. Wish I could play like Mick anyway but Dan I could listen to for ages.
Mick’s tone was a perfect storm. Epic, glorious, one of the best on the channel.
32:53 the most real moment on TPS ever. I felt that so hard.
Highgate Club I think we all felt Dan’s pain there
Highgate Club hope Dan has 4 grand (Or 8) to spare. 😂
As much as I enjoyed the playing, and the epic tones, I really enjoyed watching Mick and Dan's expressions when the other was playing. They were having so much fun, and just reveling in the sound.
That "warm storm" comment needs to be a new T-shirt.
So many inspiring tones, such a fantastically different sound between the two of you but I'd be over the moon with either.
I can't exaggerate how wonderful this was to watch with a whiskey and a cigar. Highlight of isolation thus far.
