Can't wait for the next video on your other guitars. I love your blue PRS. Stay safe and well and keep Rocking. Signed John Gregory / Zepbass from Munster Indiana.
I'd say there is 2 types of guitars you own: 1st, the one! 2nd other purpose guitars (open tunings, etc.) *note the guitar 'the one' is the guitar you can comfortable adapt to anything you play... So they all can be the one... I get it aswell :D
I play for fun and collecting guitars not only for playing but as piece of art that I can hang on the wall. Supporting guitar makers while satisfying you passion is the best.
The optimal amount depends on what you want. I was happy with 2 for ages, an electric with humbuckers and an acoustic. I now own 3 electrics and an acoustic. Recently picked up a strandberg and I don’t think I’ll be going back to other guitars just on an ergonomic standpoint, which means my collection is going to shrink down again. Some people have dozens of guitars, but outside of pickup configurations and body designs there frankly isn’t much to it for me. Saved me thousands of dollars, which is nice at least
I’m happy once I’ve collected all the pickups for electric and go-to acoustics with different woods. Where I’m at: - 335 (Fralin Medium PAF) - ‘57 Historic Goldtop (Ox4 Low PAF) - ‘57 Historic LP Special (p90) - ‘Strat (Single Coil) - ‘64 Silvertone 1446 (Mini Gibson HBs) - Vintage ‘64 Epiphone Texan (Mahogany) - D28 Standard Bracing (my preference, Rosewood) Next up and hopefully last, Jazzmaster and Hummingbird for Square-Shoulder Mahogany. Waiting now for the “How many amps” vid from you Rick…
I own a 1975 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe Burst that someone over the years had routed out for Humbucker's (Duncan 59 in the neck, Duncan Classic in the bridge) with a mahogany neck. I had the fretboard planned and re-fretted with smaller stainless steel frets. I also replaced the electronics (original pots were stamped 1974) with 1950's style wiring. It's killer, love the stainless steel frets it's the way to go for sure.
Just bought my 21st guitar today and also have 12 basses. They all have their use and many are very different. Tunings, tremolos, amount of frets, pickup types, genres...
Your Gibson acoustic is the best sounding acoustic across TH-cam airwaves I've ever heard. Every time I hear it I'm stunned by the tone! There's literally nothing that compares to it!
Rick's such a Boss, he has a personal guitar tech even though he's not a touring guitarist. I think I'm gonna drop to 9's on my L Peezy, lower gauges really suit, vintage pickups and amps.
I'm a passionate guitarist and guitar nerd. And some time after I got my third electric I got anxious about not having enough time to play all three of them enough. So I sold one and I feel much better having only 2x nice electric and 1x acoustic guitar. I always wanted to have 10+ guitars. Never thought I'd feel this way.
Exactly how I feel, and I have the same amount as you now. I would be happy just playing my almost 40 year old Kramer, but I’m still trying to spend maybe equal time on my new Jackson. Many more, and most will just sit on the wall getting dusty.🎸😝🤘🏻
@@reidponce I've had my Ibanez RG570 since 1992 so that's 29 years. I've gigged it and modded it and it's been my favourite forever. It doesn't stop me wanting other guitars with a different flavour on a recording. My last purchase was a £100 guitar from the Ukraine. I needs work but ultimately it will sound different to anything I have. You can acquire gear and it's not a problem. All my guitars are up on really good neck grips and all look fantastic sand play fantastic when I take them down. I have a 1964 Teisco VN2 baritone Guitar. It was my first electric guitar. I'd played acoustic for about 2 years. I played it through a Vox AC30 that the Yacht club my father was a member of that sat in an unused hall in the building. I'd played guitar for a few years but didn't have my own amp. The sound of the electric through the Twin 12s of the Ac30 was Crazy. We were not able to properly overdrive it for long because were under the bar and it was crazy loud but that sealed the deal for me. I bought an amp off another local guitarist called a demon 20. 1 channel but had a boost switch that turned it into an animal of an amp. Complete distortion fuzz overdrive. All of it. It was a great amp to learn on because it was either clean or an animal that you had to work hard to clean up to mild overdrive at high attack. Also it would randomly not work and that would require beating it and lots of reverb noises until whatever lose connection made contact. Great amp for me as a 14 year old boy. Luv and Peace.
I agree I use to think I needed 10 guitars and always buying and trying just to realize I can cover all walks of music with my 3 electrics and my acoustic. No more driving myself nuts trying and buying returning guitars Im finally content.

Would love to have a les Paul like the red standard. Why no arch tops or thin line jazz set ups? You’re such a great jazz player as well thought you would have had something lying around for a joe pass solo gig.
Some absolute wonks were blasting Rick's signature guitar on a music forum I browse, and I had to tell them I think it looks killer with the blue paint. I own a black early 2000's DC Special and it plays like a dream, but I wish it had neck binding like Rick's. I think it's so cool to choose a Special DC as a sig Rick, they're the sleeper guitars in Gibson's arsenal.
Dave mentioned Barry Bailey. He's was the lead guitar player for the Atlanta Rhythm Section. Barry retired in 2006 cause of health problems. He passed in march of 2022. He played a couple of Gibson Les Paul Gold tops. Barry lived in Decatur,GA when he passed. I'm curious is his guitars will come up for auction or for sale. I got to meet Barry in 1994. He was a heck of a nice guy.
I got excited about slope-shouldered guitars when Taylor, Martin, and everyone else released reasonably affordable models, but after playing several variations in person I felt like certain frequencies and overtones were either missing or too pronounced. And there was a boxy quality there, especially with the Taylors. I just got my Gibson Songwriter, and I'm not missing anything.
I think I need to experiment more with string gauges. I have pretty much stuck with the same gauges on my electrics and my acoustics for 50 years ... I may be able to improve the sound and playability of my guitars with different strings.
No u can never have to many. I'm running out of room as well between guitars amps heads combos and cabs. Then wahs and other pedals all over the place. U can run out of room but I no people with more guitars than most stores 200 or more guitars and I would love to have them also. Lol. I'll find room. Make them fit. If I have to the bed and sofa kitchen table chairs whatever has to go to get them in lol!!
I would love to see an in depth description of the 12 string Taylor you used on one of your top 20 videos. It sounded as good as any 12 string I’ve ever heard.
I've got an American Special Strat, a Custom Shop 61 Fiesta Red, a Jimmy Page Mirror Tele, an American Standard Candy Apple Red Tele, and a cherry red 335 dot neck. Most of those are pretty pricey but actually the next guitar I plan to get is a Gretsch BT Jet. Man those things are actually pretty sweet for the price!
My first quality guitar was a lawsuit era Les Paul Special Double Cut (cherry red)in 1976 2 P90s and still sounds great. Now a Gibson man through and through with actual Gibbo Double Cut - love it! :) great show man
Ok Rick, you now have hit on one of my wife's favorite topics! I was sitting at an even dozen for quite a few years and then the flood gates kind of opened up. I'm at somewhere between 42-45, counting my bass and acoustic. I haven't counted lately. With that said, I have sold 11, so not quite a hoarder! I do view about 20 of them as solid investments.
As a guitar builder myself I am kind of like Dave and can see his passion and knowledge. Only difference is he actually sells some guitars and I just keep them. Hence it is a hobby for me that started out as a business. Lasted a few years in LA where I did sell to make ends meet but once I actually have money I buy and keep. Kind of a problem if you want to make money at it but build and buy guitars you love.
If you can store and use the guitars well, there's no limit for the amount of guitars you can have. If you could only have one guitar I'd say best bet is an Strat-style, hss/hsh pickup config, volume/volume/tone, 24 fret, floyd rose bridge guitar. Example of this could be an Charvel Guthrie Govan, ESP M-ll/KH, or Jackson soloist. Versatility on those guitars is insane!
Every time my girlfriend tells me I have too many guitars... I'll just show her this video lol. Awesome Vid! I actually like the Beato 2 channel a lot! Keep doing what you do
I have a ‘69 SG Special (P-90s), and it’s my best playing guitar; perfect for my hands. I always play an electric guitar unplugged at first. I think you can tell a lot about it .that way, particularly the guitar’s inherent resonance. The day I bought that SG Special, I was knocked out by how loud it was unplugged. I knew right away it was a good one. Since I’ve had it over 50 years (bought used), I guess I made the right call.
The universal equasion to calculate how many guitars one should have is: y = x + 1 Where: y is the desired number of guitars owned x is the number of currently owned guitars
I love my 86 Charvel Model 4 in "white pearl" altho by now it's actually cream pearl. I'm swapping out all the electronics for what is functionally the same same as stock but with a few upgrades. It's now fully active (as opposed to it originally being only active controls) with EMG 81TWX + SAX + SX with push/pull master volume that splits the humbucker to the south coils, SPC & EXG tone controls, and new set of 3x 2-way on/off pup switches. The switches and metal set-screw knobs are black to match the black hardwares including the original Kahler trem and bar.
At one point I had eight electrics and three acoustics. That was while I was still on my tone quest. Now I have six electrics and two acoustics. The acoustic guitars are both jumbos but one is all solid wood and better made. With a new set of strings on the lesser one it sounds pretty darn good, a definite keeper. My electrics are either full size hollowbodies or full size semi-hollows. I have a variety of pickups varying from Guild Lil' Buckers, Filter'Trons, P90s, and humbuckers. One guitar is a three pickup P90. One of the hollowbodies is tuned to Open G. My tonal options vary and I've realized I really don't need another guitar. Do I want a new guitar? Of course, but I've learned to sleep on it before buying. Play the guitars I already have and remember why I've kept them. It's worked so far in keeping the G.A.S. at bay. Now I just have to stop wanting another amp.
Highlight of the video? Dave's Gazzarri's on The Strip t-shirt! "The place where The Doors, Van Halen, and Ratt started!" All the guitars are awesome, though I love that beautiful blue Les Paul.
My friend used to have a deluxe that was routed out and had the original late 70s patent pending L500 Bill Lawrence pickups in it and brass nut... that thing was one of the best playing guitars ever! I have those pickups out of that guitar now, both Rhythm and Lead matching set.
I only need 4 at the most, and only if I'm touring. 1 for fingers, 1 for plectrum, and 2 backups. I could make do with just 2 on tour. Nothing expensive; just a couple of plekked Gios modified to be completely passive with no EQ. I only use one tuning, so that's never been an issue for me.
I have two guitar racks, each having slots for seven guitars. I currently have nine guitars with another one on the way. My wife jokingly says I have to stop at 14, which is the capacity of the two racks. But in my case, I see 14 as enough, as I go for quality over quantity. I honestly can't see needing more than that but to each his own!
So Dave is assembling a collection of all his dream guitars and getting Rick to pay for them and store them. Brilliant!

I know exactly what you mean about owning a lot of guitars. Currently I have thirty one bass guitars. Each one has it's own personality and unique sound.
Finally! We get to see all those tantalizing guitars behind you; except I figured the ones you showed us today weren't nearly all of them! 😁
I have a strat with a solid rosewood neck. I love it. The sound is very snappy.
I’ve been hoping you would give us this guided tour, Rick! Super fun to learn more about your collection.
Ditto!
They are like tools in a mechanics tool box but some you gravitate to and connect with more than others.
I’m happy once I’ve collected all the pickups for electric and go-to acoustics with different woods. Where I’m at:
- 335 (Fralin Medium PAF)
- ‘57 Historic Goldtop (Ox4 Low PAF)
- ‘57 Historic LP Special (p90)
- ‘Strat (Single Coil)
- ‘64 Silvertone 1446 (Mini Gibson HBs)
- Vintage ‘64 Epiphone Texan (Mahogany)
- D28 Standard Bracing (my preference, Rosewood)
Next up and hopefully last, Jazzmaster and Hummingbird for Square-Shoulder Mahogany.
Gluttony
@@BkBk-gy6vr sure. Look at Steve Vai or Rick Nielsen. I actually play almost all of these...
I find myself favoring my tele and les paul...my strat isn't getting any love. May need to trade for an acoustic.
@@reidponce NO NO NO!!! Don't ditch the strat! I have tele, lp and strat- love them all equally but U can easily get more sounds/variations out of the strat!!!
1- modern sounding strat plus
2- vintage sounding strat
3- hm strat w/ hsh and floyd
4- les paul custom w/ hot pups
5- les paul w/ vintage sounding pups
6- epi dot w/ buckers
7- epi g-1275 doubleneck
8- 50s style telecaster
9- 60s style telecaster
10- precision lyte bass
11- washburn acoustic
11 guitars total is enough for me with 5 different style amps.
ric elbacker for Beatle songs
My first guitar was a Teisco masonite guitar I bought in high school. Then Ovation, Peavey T-60, LP Studio, Ibanez Jazz Artist, Yamaha 12 and Fender 12 strings and a Carlo Robelli I got for free, which is surprisingly decent.
Would be cool to see you talk about how you eq your amps with different guitars and pickups for clean and dirty. How to dial in good tone and why it is good
I've never seen that side access for the trussrod! That is fantastic, wish all guitars had this.
My little brother and I have almost the exact same report. He’s like rain man when it comes to gear, it’s awesome. Whereas I’m a plug and play except I know what i like and trust him to tell me what I need.
The Gibson Rick Beato signature looks fantastic, not much point asking if there will be any lefties 😕
Wondering the same thing my fellow lefty!
@@timwalls7944 it's genuinely not worth asking, I tried to buy one of the recent Iommi SG's only to find lefties were special order only and none are coming to England!
@@hughjarrse I'm a lefty and I find this to be too funny. No left handed Tony Iommi SG's in England. That's just as bad as no left handed Jimi Hendrix signature Stratocaster's in the USA.
1- dave is a kick ass player and a walking guitar encyclopedia
2- i love the way rick just loves music, whenever Dave pulls into a great lick you can see rick smile with zero artifice and just a love for the instrument- so many guitarist would just present a "damn" look in some competitive - i can't do that yet, type of way. not rick, he just loves it.
I admire that Rick wants modern technologies on classic/vintage style guitars. Honestly, I've played some actual vintage guitars and didn't really like the sound and/or playability. Unless one is a real, vintage guitar *collector* I just don't really get the desired to have a pre-relict, crappy sounding (and playing) guitar. I'd be really happy with *any* of the guitars featured here! 😀
It's cool to see Dave play :)
Dave is a killer player
@@rickbeato2
Hi Rick,
Thank you for your videos, books and courses (I am a youtube follower and client, here in Lawrenceville, GA).
I have a few guitars and would like to get in touch with Dave, for some consultations.
I hope you can help me contact him (I don't have Facebook or Instagram accounts, and couldn't find his info online).
Thank you, again and sorry to bother, this way.
Regards,
C.
Love the white strat! Bought a Gibson DC a couple of years ago so the DC/P90 box is checked!
Those PRS’s look so delicious, you almost want to grab a bite at them. Gorgeous instruments.
Gold top.... Sunburst..... Teles (Esquire.... Thinline....Whitfill) Strats (custom shop, Mexican, partsocaster).... McCarty ..... J45.... That's ALL I need!! Love them all til the day I die!
Rick I think you would love the Eric Johnson strat...
A really cool classic/modern combination
Your collection hasn't gone unnoticed. Thanks for the insight.
I have a Chinese squire and a Mexican strat. Thinking of downsizing and letting go of the squire..
More please, definitely want to hear about the rest of your collection and Dave’s commentary on setup/details etc. Would be nice to hear them all too.
OK, I'm glad to finally get the story on the Pelham blue LP. thanks!
Q: How Many Are “Too Many” Guitars?
A: Always two more guitars than I currently own, so I’ll just get one more.
but this one makes a noise the other ones dont make i swear honey
I know it doesn't need to be said but the lighting in your videos is just freakin' great!
I think I need to experiment more with string gauges. I have pretty much stuck with the same gauges on my electrics and my acoustics for 50 years ... I may be able to improve the sound and playability of my guitars with different strings.
I have never heard of a person having too many guitars.
I have, especially in a small space. Have a buddy that has 47 and you start running out of room
@@shaunzimmerman661 haha! Stack them high!
A guy named Bonamassa perhaps?
Bless you
Never too many! Thanks for the inside scoop on your collection.
Let me guess.
You’re shooting to build this channel such that NONE of it is demonetized.
I really think you can. You’re content is great!
19:55 Ricks face going into solo mode haha
If I had to choose one guitar, it would be a Tele. (And I started out on a Strat.)
Every time my girlfriend tells me I have too many guitars... I'll just show her this video lol. Awesome Vid! I actually like the Beato 2 channel a lot! Keep doing what you do
Speaking of Deluxes, I have a 72 Goldtop that I've owned since 75. Stock except one refret. My first real guitar. Absolutely love it. The Minis sing.
How about a video on guitars you've had and wished you never sold, this brings tears to my eyes
Electric guitars - Strat, tele, LP with P90s, 335 with humbuckers, Gretsch with filtertrons, another Gretsch with Dynasonics, SG with mini humbuckers.
The universal equasion to calculate how many guitars one should have is:
y = x + 1
Where:
y is the desired number of guitars owned
x is the number of currently owned guitars
I love my 86 Charvel Model 4 in "white pearl" altho by now it's actually cream pearl. I'm swapping out all the electronics for what is functionally the same same as stock but with a few upgrades.
It's now fully active (as opposed to it originally being only active controls) with EMG 81TWX + SAX + SX with push/pull master volume that splits the humbucker to the south coils, SPC & EXG tone controls, and new set of 3x 2-way on/off pup switches. The switches and metal set-screw knobs are black to match the black hardwares including the original Kahler trem and bar.
PHENOMENAL Guitar Collection !!! Thanks for showing....
I love Dave... Since I always love seeing where licks come from (blues players).
Thanks for mentioning 'Spooky'. Such a distinctive guitar sound!
My friend used to have a deluxe that was routed out and had the original late 70s patent pending L500 Bill Lawrence pickups in it and brass nut... that thing was one of the best playing guitars ever! I have those pickups out of that guitar now, both Rhythm and Lead matching set.
I really want to buy one of your signature guitars. It's beautiful and I must have one. Do you know when it will be available?
So, I take it you like Gibsons?
That Country Western sounds INCREDIBLE. Simply amazing!
I only need 4 at the most, and only if I'm touring. 1 for fingers, 1 for plectrum, and 2 backups. I could make do with just 2 on tour. Nothing expensive; just a couple of plekked Gios modified to be completely passive with no EQ. I only use one tuning, so that's never been an issue for me.
ohhhh that LP in Pelham Blue is soooo beautiful! Well, to be honest, any guitar in that color makes me drool.
Change out the racks for ones with 9 guitar slots…..
Every guitar owner needs a good Dave
