  • I stopped in over at PPE Diesel and took a sneak peak look at their prototype Catch Can for the 3.0 Duramax Diesel. In doing so, I camne across a catch can for the 3.0 ECODIESEL as well ! Tell your RAM buddies !

    I think the VSE design is much closer to the source connection. I wonder if that will result in more effective. Would definitely like to see a comparison.

      The explanation for the PPE being further away is that it’s easier to separate more out when it’s cooler. I don’t know the science behind that personally. But I agree, seeing a side by side comparison will be great as they are two very different designs.

    It’s nice companies are coming out with catch cans now. I do like the VSE design much more due to its built in bypass.
    Looking at this it seems like the R&D was not as robust as VSE.
    But I’m also sure it will come with a much lower price point than $350.

Based on the fact that they are still in prototype, I think I’m going to keep the VSE unit coming in a couple weeks, and I can get the PPE one down the road. This looks to be a better set up overall, but I don’t want to wait either.

      The vse definitely has this one bet in the Bling department. If the two kits are in the same price range then I can foresee more people going towards the vse. Vse spent their money creating the catch can and ppe spent their money creating one piece rubber lines

    • @Gameplayer70
      @Gameplayer70 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@gasparsperformance9841 again I’ll be interested to see the difference in performance. The VSE one might look flashy, but it doesn’t look very efficient when compared to this. And I’m after results more than looks, I don’t take my truck to shows.
      However you are likely right in your analysis of the market. I’m not positive though as I feel like PPE has a pretty loyal following. And I bet the end result will be cleaner than the prototype we saw.

      @@Gameplayer70 I’m running my own oil catch can setup in my truck (still doing some r&d) and so far I can say that it is worth the Pennie’s as I have seen it catch a good amount of oil. The main concern with an oil catch can on our trucks is trying not to get a engine check light for crankcase ventilation system disconnected.

      If your deleted it’s easy to cap the tube going to intake, weld a scavenger bung in the down pipe, use a 5/8” barb and connect the pcv line to a hose running to your exhaust. I did this in my 19 ZR2. It has worked flawlessly for 2 years. My ZR2 has the DT44 turbo & Crx Racing intercooler. I had to change a boot recently and the inside of the intercooler is absolutely spotless.

    Seems like the VSE would transfer heat from the aluminum and make the oil condense better in the catch can. But being mounted right next to the turbo would be too hot of a location. Hydrocarbon fumes would need to cool to condense in the catch can. How is the effectiveness of the catch can measured?

    Good day,
    LZ0 7300 miles, developed a tick only when in reverse or drive that goes away as the transmission and engine temp warms up. Everywhere only with videos included say “this is a normal noise”, however I don’t agree that it is normal, it is metallic in nature and goes away with either heat, or speed but only when in drive.
    There’s very limited coverage on similar issues, the question I have is what could be the source? I’ve ruled out DEF injection as that sound I’ve heard and it doesn’t match this sound. It’s not ignition knock as that would occur regardless of engine temp, not lifter tick as that would be a much more pronounced tapping and it’s not an exhaust manifold leak as I have no soot build up
    Is it possible this tick is coming from the transmission? There’s a few posts on tech pages that him at bad trans pumps, bad idle speed gears, and bad torque converts contributing to similar sounds.
    Really difficult to wrap my head around, truck is on warranty but I depend on it for work, any guidance would be appreciated.

    For those wondering about price, the ProVent 200 oil separator runs $160-$180 online without hoses, brackets, clamps, etc.

  • @charlesb4267

    I wonder what this unit will perform like in cold weather, my understanding is that catch cans in general have not done well in the cold climates due to accumulating water which in turn freezes and then effectively plugs up the pcv system from operating at all and then really bad things happens due to the crank case pressure not being able to re-leave itself. Had you asked if they have had a chance to do extensive cold weather testing as of yet ?. If some system could cope with cold winter climates, that would be a boone to not only the diesel world but the gas DI world.

    • @lewiswatchorn7239
      @lewiswatchorn7239 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The VSE unit might be a better choice for that environment-it has a bypass machined into the top in case the tank gets full, or in this case, blocked by ice.

    • @charlesb4267
      @charlesb4267 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@lewiswatchorn7239Right, I am just not clear on this unit as to a protection system in that way. Constant cold weather makes for a tough environment for some devices to work properly, namely the lovely Exhaust Fluid crap that freezes and the system goes into limp mode.

    • @sierracat
      @sierracat 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I brought up this same point on the VSE CC video and crickets (as of a couple days ago). I haven't checked just recently. The prototype mount location of this PPE can will likely introduce a lot of moisture, etc, especially in the winter and sub zero weather IMHO...

    • @charlesb4267
      @charlesb4267 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sierracatMy concern as well would be moisture drop out within the hoses and block them right off. This is what happens as an example with a simple two cylinder grain auger engine commonly used, the crank case ventilation system routes a hose around to suck in the vapours but with extreme cold temps that water vapour turns to ice within the hose and once it plugs off there is no where for the crank case pressure to go so either one lucks out and it blows the oil dipstick out enough that air can escape or it blows the crankshaft seal out the side of the engine and the oil flies out and the engine is toast if not caught right away. One sure does not want that to happen to your vehicle and its a classic situation of warranty that would not cover damage associated with adding a catch can, that's the reality of it. Having said that, if one lives in an above freezing climate, that should never be a worry.

    • @Gameplayer70
      @Gameplayer70 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The catch can on my Kia forte GT doesn’t freeze up at all during the winter. Although to be fair it’s mounted right next to the block and is very warm after operating the vehicle. I think this helps eliminate any residual moisture in the lines.

    PCV systems are so fking annoying. So are catch cans that aren't designed with the extreme cold of the North in mind and constantly fill up with water and turn into an ice block. I had one on a 2014 Silverado and it iced sooner than expected and began to run weird on the drive home from work one night. When I got hope, I popped the hood to check the catch can. It was so iced up I had to use a heat gun to thaw it out. It was so iced up that it caused the crankcase to pressurize enough to pop the dipstick out of position. I would just vent it to atmosphere but I don't want to give up the advantage that comes with pulling a light vacuum on the crankcase.
