The best explanation I’ve come across, is that testosterone functions to both increase size, aggression, muscle mass, etc; but also causes the development of male genitalia in mammals.
Female spotted hyenas very well might have pseudopenises as a side-effect of evolving to be so large and aggressive.
Makes sense, they dominate the men. Now it’s just about understanding why they evolved hyper dominate females.
Likely due to competition in Africa and the unique niche they occupy.
That makes the most sense 🤔

The question at the end: Possibly just a byproduct of the increased testosterone the females might have? Kind of vestigal, in a sense. Imagine for some reason females evolve to have male levels of testosterone, they might sport an enlarged clitoris, like female bodybuilders that do steroids, but naturally. So it might be more of a byproduct than an actual, useful, adaptation.

Great video! From what I have learned during my studies; was something about the hormone-balance of the females. higher testosterone levels in an individual can influence the behavior. It can change for an individual to become more aggressive, muscular built and influence genitalia development. Just like human's body can change when for example adding more testosterone or estrogen in the diet. Hyena's are extraordinary and a mysterie why they are as they are.
Both males & females produce testosterone & estrogen but at different levels. I wonder if females hyenas have more testosterone than others females mammals.
I heard that estrogen can affect growth & that’s why human men or others species of male mammals on general grow larger. That besides natural selection, genetics & different species react differently to hormones/pheromones. I’m not sure tho.

I read something that could explain it:
So first reason that Female are dominative in hyenas is because they need to provide for their kids longer then other predators. Mainly because for example development of skull muscles (powerful bite) takes longer. Also during pregnancy at the end female body produces lots of testosterone to give cubs the drive. This hormonal response can be responsible for pseudo penis (like with female homo sapiens athletes that are taking steroids - they also have small, penises like extensions of their cliteris). So hyenas body produces lots of testosterone -> pseudo penis.
But it’s looks so weird!
If I luckily became a human intelligent male hyena, I would go to the nearest wildlife reservation and well... live there of course!
