- A quick video tutorial on how to program and add an additional ignition key to a 2001 - 2011 Ford Ranger. Programming a new transponder chip key to your Ford Ranger truck will require that you currently have two working ignition keys.
To program and add a new ignition key to your Ford Ranger:
1. Insert the first previously programmed key into the ignition and turn the ignition from the OFF position to the ON position (maintain ignition in the ON position for at least one
second, but no more than 10 seconds).
2. Turn ignition from the ON position back to the OFF position in order to remove the first programmed key from the ignition.
3. After three seconds but within 10 seconds of removing the first previously programmed key, insert the second previously programmed key into the ignition and turn the ignition from the OFF position to the ON position (maintain ignition in the ON position for at least one second but no more than 10 seconds).
4. Turn the ignition from the ON position back to the OFF position in order to remove the second programmed key from the ignition.
5. After three seconds but within 10 seconds of removing the second programmed key, insert the new unprogrammed key (new key/valet key) into the ignition and turn the ignition from the OFF position to the ON position (maintain ignition in the ON position for at least one second, but no more than 10 seconds). This step will program your new key to a programmed key.
6. To program additional new unprogrammed key(s), repeat Steps 1 through 5.
This video will show you how to program and add a new key to the following ford models:
2001 Ford Ranger
2002 Ford Ranger
2003 Ford Ranger

Clear concise and saved me a lot of money by enabling me to DIY on my old 1999 Mazda B3000. I now have 2 working sets of keys with fobs without having to pay a dealer for service. Thank you!
You're Welcome!
You’ve helped me save 160$ this worked on my 2000 4.0 4x4 ranger. The lock smith was here earlier and was only able to program 1 key to my ranger and gave me the 3rd
I love how simple this is, thanks!
You're welcome!
Worked on my 2009 ranger 👍👍 thank you
You're Welcome!
Saved my bacon dude. But neither one of my original keys would start my truck, so I just thought I'd try your trick to see and what do you know, it worked. I tried both keys for days to no avail and your trick worked immediately. So maybe you only need the original keys to reset the key code unit to default and it has stored key code memory? I don't know, but I'm not gonna complain.
Worked great 2005 Freestar! I now have 4 working keys! Thanks and Happy New Year! 🥳
You're Welcome! Happy New Year!
Cool. Sucks that you need 2 keys and can’t do it with one
Will this work on my 2011 Ford Ranger? I lost my keys hiking.
yes
I do not understand why you have to have two working keys.
You mean to say if I only have one working key I cannot get a duplicate key I'm going to the dealer?
Correct - dealer or automotive locksmith
I know I'm in the same boat. I never thought about getting another key when I had 2 working keys. Ford could have set that up to work with only one.......
Have to have two working keys to learn additional keys. Otherwise you need a higher end scan tool that can access oem functions for the vehicle.
How do I reset key 1:06
Didn't work for me. 2010 Ford Ranger. 😢
What if I only have one working key can I trick the system by doing your steps just re insert the 1st key for the second time then on with the new key will this work?
You can't - you will need an automotive locksmith or dealership
😂 I had the same question. Battery plus wants $80 to program it
@@Truckingtowardsfreedom yes I ended up paying $55.00 at the local locksmith I now have purchased 2 clone keys these you can program yourself but you must have 2 already working keys .
@@derekreinhardt7818 oh you mean if I have one original and one clone I can program the third on my own?
@@Truckingtowardsfreedom yes
Hi, Can it be done on a 2011 Ford Ranger ?
yes
I only have one original key because I lost the other one. Can I do it with one key, or do I need two keys ?
you need 2 working
@@PYR-Auto Last question Sr. and thanks for answering. If I program a key with the locksmith, can I use it with the other key I have to program the third key ?
Yes you can
Dealer wanted $104.95 for key and $90 to program it. Shish!
Yeah almost went with the dealer option myself, didn't realize it was a scam until I thought, couldn't I just do this myself
Worked like a charm.. my third try😅 thanks
this doesn't work in my 2002 ranger , i have 3 working keys , and i wanted a 4th ,
I might be wrong, but as far as I know the "two working keys" have to be the original keys/ones programmed by ford or specialty locksmith tools
My too
I eventually got this to work for programming a third key, but still haven’t gotten it to work for a fourth. So I don’t know-maybe more than 3 needs dealer/locksmith programming?
I swear the god damn chip bullshit is ridiculous. Why can't it just be a regular key oh yeah it's si they get more fucking money from you.
It’s so people can’t steal your truck. You also get cheaper insurance. You can thank thieves for needing this.
@@gingerd2098 bullshit it's so they can get money from you. I just payed few months ago from Ford $361.54 for a new key. I still had my old key and it worked fine the thing that keeps it on the key ring broke. So all they had to do is copy what I had and reprogram to the truck. I had a key made at Walmart for like $5 but found out afterwards it had that stupid chip and only unlocked my door and would not start the truck. It don't stop people from stealing, people steel vehicles with this all the time. All you need is power to ignition and power to fuel pump and a quick jump of power on starter silinoid and you up and running. The Insurance company don't care I only have liability on all my vehicles anyways. I haven't been in a wreck in over 27 years so what I would of payed to a insurance company I payed to myself over 27 years so when something happens to mine vehicles I just fix it and pay what it cost and still keeps me in the green. Most insurance is a scam they just play the odds game. You can do it too bust out the calculator. Let's just say on the cheap side of things you pay $100 a month for 27 years that's over $32,000 and you never get in a accident. So what you paying for your paying for the fear of a accident.
