Props for taking this on. TMV are not for the faint of heart. For me they just clicked the second I heard them but for many they can be overwhelming and I can completely understand that. They cover many genres but what I think makes them stand out from the prog crowd is that almost constant underlying latin groove that pervades all their music. I absolutely love them and put them up there with Tool as one of my fave bands. Thanks for doing this, I think you already kinda know what you're in for, but prepare yourself for quite a trip!

TMV is highly underrated. The rare occasions I find a fellow fan, its an immediate YES \m/. Frances the mute is unreal, and over 15 years later still blows me away. I often test the waters with people and they are often overwhelmed. But theres nothing like it for me, the sequencing how every track fades to the next, the incredible instrumentalists, the fucking drums goddamn, and didnt Flea play on this album too?

Oooohhhh thanks man for doing this, I really appreciate it.
So a little background for TMV. The band formed in 2001 after the departure of guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López and vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala from their previous band, At the Drive-In.
They are the "official" band members. The first writes the all the music and the second writes the lyrics and vocal melodies.
In this album you have hard rock, psychedelic rock, prog, free jazz, and latino influence. Plus high pitched vocals, great drumming, catchy bass lines, crazy solos, and lots of sound effects. The music is very experimental, and of course the lyrics too. They use a lot of metaphores, poetry, mythology stuff, and some made up words in english and misspelled spanish.
Each song in FTM is about a different person, and once you listen it all the story will make sense. And as I mentioned it's not a straight forward story. There's no way to be 100% sure about what the album is telling, but so far you're in the right path.

Plus, I remember reading somewhere many of their songs take root in the practice of 'Santeria' which has been culturally prevalent both in Puerto Rico and México which are their respective places of origin, sorry for not having the source handy. But it does explain a lot of the cryptic, metaphorical, and sometimes occult nature of their lyrics. Santeria is a religious practice that takes its qualities from both African religions and Roman Catholicism and deals with aloooooooooot of the themes presented throughout their body of work.

Usually, when a certain sound “isn’t for everyone” it’s because it’s not easily accessible as, say, pop music. This is complex listening and requires repetitive playback. They are heavily jazz-influenced, which is why to this day people still listen to bebop from the 50s. Simply timeless, futuristic music.

Yo btw, it's probably a bad idea to have the lyrics in front of you as you're listening to The Mars Volta (in particular), it takes the spontaneity out of the timing. What would be better would be to skim some of the lyrics (or better have someone show specific lyrics of interest out of order) so you recognise them when you see them but don't know when each verse/instrumental will start and end.

@@ThomasJ_Music oh don’t worry, you will like it. This album is considered to be their best by most of the Mars Volta fans, I just have weird taste haha. The reason i like this album the least is because there is a lot of ambient parts and jam parts which I don’t really like. I prefer when the album is very packed and dense like their two following albums « Amputechture » and « The Bedlam in Goliath »

    • @usefulidiot9896

@@ThomasJ_Music Frances and DITC are the most popular (a bigger fan base likes them), but you find a smaller amount of people adore Amputechture more than anyone enjoys the other two. They had an album called Bedlam in Goliath, this album could have been their best and most popular album if it went to plan, but a lot of shit happened in the studio. I like to pretend that Octahedron never existed it is so bad. Noctourniquet is nice though. Bedlam I have no opinion on as it was a doomed project, however there are a couple of gems lie Ilyena and Cavalettas.
Amputechture is their best album for me. It was also the last real mars volta album, theodore on drums
