I saw them live in 2008, and it was literally the best show ive ever seen, of any genre. Saw them again last year, and they’re older and not as intense, but still incredibly fast and tight. You have to see a live show if you get the chance. Also, look up some live footage from 2008. They played on Late Night with Letterman, and ive never seen an audience so shocked and confused lol.

Fantastic concept album, every detail in it's form and content is coherent and descriptive...furious, vengeful, self destructive, challenging, puzzling and disruptive.
Its rare in prog to find a band that focus on rage so much, but even rarer one that while being abstract is so direct and potent with their message

    • @HollowGolem

The dissonance sustains until you just can't take it anymore, resolves into the most beautiful, clean harmony, and then crashes into you again with dissonance. Omar does the musical equivalent of edging.

This album and it's predecesor "De-Loused in the Comatorium" were both great albums and like you say, the drumming is insane. The next two tracks ("the Widow" and "L'Via L'Viaquez" are just fantastic - the more you listen to them, the better they sound.

  • @JimothyRoss

Basically what has been interpreted about the story behind the concept album is that the main character Vismund Cygnus goes on a search for his biological mother after his adoptive mother (supposedly Frances, the mute) passes away. Vismund Cygnus was born with many birth defects and has never known why, which has spawned him in a life of suffering and drug abuse. On his hunt for his real mother, he meets with many of his other relatives who each reluctantly give him clues about what really happened to his mother, and the story keeps getting darker as he learns that his mother was murdered by some sort of clergy or religious cult she was a part of. The last song Cassandra Gemini reveals that Vismund's mother was brutally stabbed to death by the clergymen WHILE she was giving birth to him, leaving him a deformed orphan filled with trauma and rage. The very ending of the album describes his cathartic revenge on the clergy as he burns down the church and goes on a killing rampage, fulfilling his perceived purpose in life and satiating his sleuthing addiction. He eventually realizes that he's become the same type of monster that he's sworn to kill and his entire life was a lie, so he overdoses on heroin and ends himself. It's a pretty dark and twisted story but that's what TMV tends to do best lol.
That's pretty much the most popular plot synopsis, but keep in mind it's still very vague and can be interpreted in MANY different ways as well. Hope this helped!

Amazes me still how people can hate on this. Ok, not your speed. I get it. But people who think they overthink it and make things too complex for the sake of it, shouldn’t really be allowed to get a vote.
Mars are legit prog masters whether it’s your speed or not. Omar Rodriguez Lopez is a musical genius. Everything (every band) he is a part of is great.
This album is a classic just like Deloused. But all of their albums are stellar and deserve their rightful listen. Although the albums evolve quite measurably as they came out. They’re are all fantastic and hold their own.
I have been a follower since day one JP and I’m really happy you finally hit these guys up. Doing this whole album would be fantastic but if you do or don’t, you should hit many more songs along the way.

I am SO glad you're getting into The Mars Volta! Finally! (also happy to be namedropped because I think I made that recommendation a long time ago, so thanks for remembering). A few things:
    - that ending that you liked and is called Con Safo, well, keep looking at the tracks' part titles ;)
    - the "story" is a loose concept linking together the characters from the songs but the concept remains quite vague and up for interpretation
    - the first three albums of the band had Jon Theodore on drums, as you noticed, and because of those three albums, he is my favorite living drummer
    - there are no weak tracks on this album, you're in for a ride!
    - the album was intended as six-track project, but the title track was dropped due to the album being too long to fit on one CD, be sure to listen to "Frances The Mute" after you're done with the album
I am very much looking forward to seeing you experience the rest of this stellar album for the first time!

Love me some Mars Volta! I'm glad you enjoyed it. One of the few modern-ish prog bands that can claim a fanbase as wide-ranging as Neil Peart, Steven Wilson, Tool, Can, Run the Jewels, Lizzo and plenty more in between.
At The Drive In are also good. It was Omar & Cedric's band before this. Basically Mars Volta but with hardcore elements instead of prog elements

The first two albums by TMV ('De-loused In The Comatorium' and 'Frances The Mute') are concept albums, Cedric and Omar are old school and wanted the album to be enjoyed like a vinyl in one listen. This being the case, there are a lot of transitions that are forced upon the listener to get through the album instead of having separate tracks to skip.
Omar produces the music in the way of a movie, so all of the jump-scares, scene transitions, mood changes and uncomfortable sections are intentionally placed to set the scene.
Very challenging listens in all, but rewarding if you give the albums the proper attention and allow it to take you on the Rollercoaster.

Yass! You're getting to TMV! This album and Deloused are both modern essentials (not that they have a bad album). A couple of things, they have a single called "Frances the Mute" that slots right before this song, if you end up liking the album and want a bonus track!
Also, since you've started King Gizz and now TMV, can we expect more modern Prog? I would be very stoked for that. Maybe get to Steven Wilson, The Dear Hunter, Thank You Scientist, and even though you've listened to Coheed, it would be excellent if you would review/react to at least The Willing Well coda, maybe some Afterman? Anywhoo, keep up the good work! 👌

This song may as well be an album in itself. It has every fast, slow, up, down, and all around you could want in a listening experience. They pack more creativity and musicianship into this 13 minutes than some bands achieve in a lifetime. It's definitely worth listening to the title track "Frances The Mute" which was supposed to come before this, but was cut because it was too long. I think "Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus" is a stronger start, but that song is also cool.

OTOH I like most of the Mars Volta songs I've managed to find, but OTOH (sorry, I like that ambiguity in acronyms, so I overuse it) ... er OTOH, I've never gone deep into their discography. (So lucky me. I get to hear something new yet again on JustJP.)
Actually for one as opinionated myself, there's a very high proportion of things I've never heard before on your channel. If I was as expert as I feel I am (feel, not think - think says to me, you don't know shite bru) ... if I knew so much, I'd know more of the songs you listen to, surely? Surely.
OK, now I can go back to knowing-it-all.

It looks like they have a sense of humour, if their video for *Goliath* is anything to go by. th-cam.com/video/lrwMMF2QS14/w-d-xo.html
(I don't know if the analysis by influences provides any valuable insight. It's natural enough to fall into this, but the influences come through in fragments inside a whole that's entirely original. Of course bands are going to have influences, and these are going to come through; and it can even be good music when the influence almost functions as a template that must be adhered to - since, after all, this is Pop, as XTC said; but focusing on those influences misses the point, often, I think.)

Not my favorite on 1st listen to this song, and band, IIRC. I'm not a fan of music that sounds like it is a test of how fast the band can play, though this song offers some islands of interest hear and there, like the sudden bursts of vocal harmony, and the long ⁷/⁴ section, which reminds me in form (but not notes or rhythm) of the guitar solo in King Crimson's "Easy Money". I'll check out more from this band and see if I get used to it.

I'm very broadminded in what I listen to and thoroughly enjoyed Deloused in the Comatorium but, more so than most other bands, the law of diminishing returns applies to The Mars Volta. In isolation, any 30 minutes of their music is excellent but when you try more than 2 albums in quick succession, you begin to think of pushing the plate away. When I saw them live, I was very much looking at my watch and hoping that the last few tracks didn't go on too long (they did) Still, I hope that some newcomers are impressed.

Prior that a mix of frenetic, very frentic, and a slower break. The frenetic parts I just found too harsh, and abrasive. The slow break, rather dull with a wodge of soulless geet noondling over it.
