YES DUDE. I’m pumped for this.
I’ll never forget hearing them for the first time when Deloused in the Comatorium released. It changed music for me forever.

This song illustrates in perfect anxiety, the fear for my life when I have to merge onto a packed but not slowed down, heavy, continuous stream of 8 lanes of traffic in LA where no one will slow to let me in. Random people honking, some yelling in foreign languages, lots of hot, dirty air, and the the weird ass places I pull off when I'm lost. Kids playing in the street, an old woman selling taquitas, and a neon sign for "Adivina" in a house window. Wait- there's a gas station! Where the FACK Am I?!?

Absolutely love that bass groove. Juan Alderete is a monster. And that buildup and release of tension from about 9:20 is one of the most cathartic moments in music for me.

I gotta say it’s music like this that makes me proud to be born the decade I was, hearing Mara Volta on TV at the age of 11 and 12 when they were coming up was a truly inspiring and mind opening experience. Just a legendary band, incredible stage presence and the full package.

L’via L’viaquez was on Guitar Hero World Tour. I had to be 11-12 at the time. I didn’t even listen to this type of music, or genre much, i was a hip-hop fan with some nu-metal and punk rock thrown in. Guitar Hero exposed me to so much and this was my favorite song on there. The full version blew me away and started my journey down their catalog. As much flack as Guitar Hero got from some legit musicians, I really appreciate the diversity of music it introduced me to. I’m sure it’s done the same for many others.

I’m so friggin’ happy right now. When you jumped I haven’t laughed that hard in a long time.
This is going to be so awesome. Thanks so much for doing this. The best part is you will no doubt remember this experience forever as we all have. Thanks for sharing that.
I’m going to add more to these comments when I can spend the time. I know I can speak for just about all of us when I say... welcome. You’re lost forever. I’m jealous... but I get to relive the feeling of listening for the first time, every time I listen. Which is often.
    Welcome... you’re lost.

PLUS : the end of the song frances the mute is the same as the start of cygnus vismund cygnus, so it floats niceley in to each other when you first listen to the "title track" and then the actual album

Glad you're diving in! Hope you get a chance to listen to it front-to-back as well since the songs segue into one another.
If you want to see them live, this same song (Cygnus Vismund Cygnus) was released with soundboard audio as part of a later release of theirs: th-cam.com/video/zuQWN9ehfrk/w-d-xo.html . Long-time TMV fans are sometimes quick to note that their drummer there is the one on their 4th and 5th albums, not the one who originally recorded the album version of this song. This drummer has a very different style that's non-stop high energy, but it still represents a great era for TMV all the same.
Their earlier-era live play-through of their debut album (De-Loused in the Comatorium) is also stellar, and one of the better video representations of their live show that I've seen: th-cam.com/video/DngK5rPI9QY/w-d-xo.html

I love the shocked reaction as anyone on their first listen has, hehe, it was intended that way. You're thrust into this fever dream drug induced story as it is like waking up to a nightmare. The story in the album is quite depressing, very dramatic, but heavy in emotion and the album plays like a movie and the transition in moods is like transition in scenery, that is were "Volta" comes from, Italian director Federico Fellini's term for transition in scene. I will share some great live videos to check out in the discussion video!

Listened to this album constantly for probably a couple of years after it came out. I kind of stopped listening to them just out of the fact that I I listened to them so much growing up. Every once in awhile I will listen to de-loused in the comatoriumbut I haven't done a full Frances the mute listen through in quite some time. It's one of those albums that you just need to listen to the entire thing through and through without stopping

Definitely! I can remeber when this album came out I listened to it 3-4 days non-stop. The fact that the album ends the same way it started just made me start it once again. But I have to confess that meanwhile most of the time listening to this album is a little bit exhausting to me. Still, it's simply a masterpiece.

    Song: “Do You Compute“

Dean, just a heads up, this album has several different track listings, including one that chopped songs into several parts so the album would get paid as an LP instead of as an EP. I got a bit worried when I saw you had listened to only the single "Frances the Mute", thinking the next time you'd revisit TMV would be another single pick -- worried because I love nearly this entire album so much, so much so that it's up there with my favorite: their first album. So I'm really glad you're gonna do the whole thing!
"Discovering" the album felt out-of-order for me. First I thought "L'Via" rocked because that was the most abuzz track from the album in terms of views or upvotes on reddit and thus it was the first one I listened to first, etc... but I was like "eh, what else is in this, there's all this weird... album around it that isn't 'Deloused'!" I was worried about it just being "THE song" from the album and there being nothing else of note. So, I took another crack at it. "Miranda" came next, I think, in terms of what I listened to and I really enjoyed it. At that point I decided to listen in-order.
Then I thought "Cygnus..." was great (which, btw, I laughed when it shocked you at the start) -- that powerful opening, that breakdown, so much just in the first couple minutes.
Then "The Widow". "L'Via" and "Miranda..." came next, of course, but then I stopped for a while there. It was because there was the nondescript back half which I only remembered by being a bit cacophonous. And damn, right away after taking another shot at it, the first parts were great.
I wonder when I'll soften up to the last bits though, haha!

I remember getting this on CD also. I tag along with another comment or two. Nobody I drove with liked them, but enjoyed that I blasted it in my stereo. Kind of rubbed off. I ended up inviting them to concerts, Minnesota or Chicago and to my surprise they agreed. It was a good time. Not so great live, but the music they play reminds me of true art over performance. Like watching a painter or sculpter working on his masterpiece. I wanted the music over the performance. Sorry if thats confusing... Or opposite, I enjoy watching my 3 year old drawing, but the drawings are, lets say, not Important.

Hey Dean, just a warning about the track listing of the album: it's supposed to have only 5 tracks with the last one, Cassandra Gemini, lasting 32 minutes. However, they had to split Cassandra into 8 parts on the CD so as not to get paid for an EP. Therefore, I don't know where you find your tracks to react to them, but I don't think there's a single streaming service that offers Cassandra Gemini in one glorious 32 minute track. Here is one from TH-cam (th-cam.com/video/NyUMHEua7-A/w-d-xo.html ). You can check the correct track list (and actual durations) on the album's Wikipedia page, though.

This album is usually referred to as their opus magnum, and rightfully so. But I still prefer their debut over this one.

If you can learn the intro to this song and do a lesson I can die a happy man (I’m not on my deathbed or anything). I’m not very good at guitar and I know a bit of theory but this intro is just beautiful to me and I can’t figure it out. Please???

Amputechture, Octahedron, Deloused in the Comatorium and The Bedlam in Goliath are also fantastic albums. I'm not a fan of Noctourniquet though.

Noctourniquet is amazing, probably my second favorite. Give it another listen with an open mind. Its not "classic rock" or "classic prog", its new.

I have listened TMV one and half year and I loved the first four albums, but Noctourniquete has something that doesn't catche me yet.

    Bass (again): Flea
    Guitar: John Frusciante
Omar Rodriguez-Lopez handled the production on this album and handed the reigns of lead guitar to Frusciante.

Juan Alderete played bass on Frances the Mute and John Frusciante only played the first two guitar solos on L’Via. On Amputechture, both Omar and John played on all of the tracks.

Reaction videos are a thing man. It's a way of sharing a love for music. But its not everyone's cup of tea.

the human emotion of empathy makes it a wonderful thing to see the joy of someone hearing music for the first time that has also brought you so much joy...empathy dude.
