@@buckfuttler2877 For me, he is byyyy faaaar the best. I know, Pridgen was absolutely fucking Floating Messiah Monsterous God at whacking those skins...but I felt jons taste and tact and feel were undeniable. He could do more than float, he could cry, rage, etc on the drums. Every drum roll and beat was so tasteful, so was pridgens, but they were also so memorable. His use of dynamics in volume/velocity was outrageous too. Some of those beats he played soft are near impossible to play soft and nail. Pridgen could definitely out-technique him, and out-speed him... but I much prefer jon compositionally, and to me that check mark is the most important. He served the song, always fit right in that pocket, and still was able to be mind blowingly technical while still serving the song. Thomas could get distracting. Not that it was ever bad, but it pulled me out of the song at times. Jon? Never. He was the song just like the rest of them. Now, don't get me wrong, thomas was maybe the best replacement possible or close to it... but losing Jon was one of the top three worst things to happen to the Volta.

    • @jdgonzo1982
      @jdgonzo1982 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Jon, for me, was MV's best drummer. His drum patterns are creative, intelligent and dynamic...listening to him made me a better drummer...he had the very same affect on me as John Bonham. He could play anything and he'd play it well...every time!! Thomas Pridgen was OK but was less creative and more technical...which is great but I like my drum patterns to be thoughtful and progressive and JT hit the nail on the head EVERY SINGLE SONG!!

this break down part at 5:32 is absolutely, hands down one of the best pieces of prog i've ever heard. the way the drums build back up slowly just gives me tingles...I must have played it to everyone I know at the time of discovering it. still gives me the chills when i play along...
EDIT: For Jim, the whole album sounds so well thought out is maybe due to Omar Rodríguez-López writing EVERY part for his band members to play. Early interviews called him a control freak as he managed every single aspect of instrumentation, how it was to be played live and so on...a control freak as some people call it!!

From a fellow musician and music nerd: This whole album is one of my favourites of all time. The music is so intricate and goes from chaotic to catchy to ambient but it's all done so fluently. The lyrics are kind of obscure and there's not necessarily one single interpretation but it's a concept album anyways. Worth checking out a few of them though since it makes you appreciate how well the lyrics and music reflect each other. I love it when music creators really think of that.

Say this song title the same way you would hear James Bond introducing himself and at least some part of this will make a little sense. Hard to take in only one part of FTM without diving into the entire concept of the album. Highly recommend the rest of it, especially Cassandra Gemini (make sure you start at the right point in the album, they made the song divisions meaningless and confusing on purpose)

Amazing album, song and band. Would be amazing if you go through it all in order, this album is absolutely beautiful and haunting and original. Interesting detail, the cover was designed by Strom Thorgerson (designed Dark Side's prism cover and other PF) with the idea that people go about thinking they have full control of their lives.
I agree with Cassandra Gemini, but I don't think it does justice to the song to listen to it for the first time without listening to The Widow, L'via L'viaquez and Miranda This Ghost just isn't Holy Anymore, first. This album is so awesome. It’s got a palindromic structure, and all the tracks are segued together with the ambient sections.

Love the multiple camera angles! Hahah and respect for listening to the whole song. There's a bunch of story behind all the weird ambient parts if you ever want to read into it

My personal favourite Mars Volta song, what an experience, hard to not leave this song with a giant smile on your face or your mind blown haha, you were ready for the ride for sure. One of few songs that gives me crazy goosebumps especially on those high vocal notes towards the end.

Well Christmas came early for Bill!! Thank you Jim!! Best thing to come home to. This is just the beginning of the big picture that is Frances the Mute. The entire album tells a story. It’s arguably their best work. If you thought this was amazing wait until you get to the finale, Cassandra Gemini. All 32 minutes. IT’S SO WORTH EVERY SECOND TOO.
It means everything to me that you’re exploring Mars. They are it for me. I put them up on high.
    Merry Christmas Jim!
Can’t wait for the next one!
    😙

Nice one Jim. It took me a long time to get into TMV. I was a big At The Drive In fan, but found TMV to lack the punch I was expecting. It wasn't until I got older that I appreciated the band for what it was, rather than what I wanted it to be.

hey Jim, just recently found your channel, love your reaction vids! Good analysis and really enjoy you rocking out to some great tunes. Mars Volta is my fave band, so great to see you enjoying this!
Some comments about your comments - The Mars Volta formed in mid 2001, so they weren't around in the late 90s. Omar and Cedric were from At The Drive In (which formed back in the early 90s I think?), which broke up in early 2001. They formed TMV after that.
Omar was considered a bit of a prog genius in the early years, there's a really great jam that he did with Flea and John Frusciante; it's floating around on TH-cam somewhere.
Fascinating fact for you: on the 2nd, 3rd and maybe 4th albums, none of the musicians heard any of the other parts played by other performers, they just all played to a click track and were told "it lifts up here, so go hard" or "it chills out here, bring it down..."
Omar was a bit of a control freak ;)
