So, this is a mixture of composed music and improvisation. The overall structure of the song is written and composed by Michael League, in collaboration with the musicians, but when they have solo parts the musicians are given the freedom to improvise, and sometimes if they’re just killing it (as Cory Henry did here on the keyboards) they’re given extra time to keep going, so the group needs to be aware and ready to change things up on the fly. You’ll notice Cory look over toward Michael at one point and smile because Michael gave him the nod to keep going. Then toward the end you’ll see Cory look over and nod at the drummer to indicate that he’s wrapping it up and to be ready to transition to the rest of the song. When the horns are playing together, they’re playing arranged runs, but when the saxophone and trumpet are “dueling” they’re improvising, etc. That type of flow between written composition and improvisation is common in jazz - a major reason why it’s such a cool genre. You’ll recognize a song, but you’ll get something a little different with every performance.

Cory Henry, the amazing soloist on this one, but the other keyboard player next to him Shaun Martin, has an amazing solo in Sleeper from the same session. Saddest news is that Shaun passed this week so it would be a timely tribute to share with you hearing him make a hosepipe wail and sing with immense feeling

I'm glad you caught Larnell's insane rim hits during the beginning of the solo. Cory Henry might have created god's own jazz solo on keys, but Larnell Lewis is god on drums himself.

that is one of the best drummers alive, Larnell Lewis. Apparently he had never played with the group before that day and learned the song on the flight into the session. Also, that synth player who had the solo is Cory Henry: a fucking legend of a musical mind.

I thought he had played with them and knew two of the songs before the fight over, during which he learned the other six.

It wasn't just that song. It was the entire album. "We Like it Here" was recorded over 4 performances in the Netherlands. Larnell says in the documentary that he learned the whole album, except for two songs, on the flight from NYC. The "regular" drummer had a passport issue and couldn't get to the Netherlands. There's a part in the documentary where M League is talking on the phone and when he hangs up, he gives the biggest smile and says "I got the guy I wanted..." referring to Larnell. He knew how good Larnell is and knew magic was gonna happen.

Also, to add, the documentary I'm referencing is somewhere here on TH-cam and gives great insights into how so many people came together to learn this album in such a short time. They all arrived, got the music, worked out specifics, and played four live shows. All within like a week and a half or some crazy short amount of time.

@tristan8922 For sure. Larnell is up there with anyone on the kit imo. And from anyone who has ever known him, they tell tales of what a great guy he is too. Just an incredible person and musician.

Your facial expressions say it all. This is the highest form of experience we have. Imo everything is artistic from a well thought out buisness plan, to a strategic football game, to Alex Honnold free soloing El capitan, to musical expression and theatre. But to me music is the ultimate expression to the point that I can't trust someone who "doesn't listen to music" that's just insanity to me.
This is the infinity... The universe, God.... Displaying our potential and beauty. This is the absolute form of the infinite, the amalgamation of human experiences portrayed in the most tangible and moving expression that we call music.

Man check out some of the behind the music type stuff from this group. They rehearse for a while on the parts. It’s still shocking they don’t have charts. Maybe try Trinity on next:)

100% agree with you on how nuts it is how tight they are, listening to what's going on and being right there with one another. The conversation between Larnell Lewis on drums and Cory Henry on keys during Cory's big solo is just _incredible_

    The lineup for this album:
Michael League - bass guitar, Moog bass
Mike Maher - trumpet, flugelhorn (solo on here)
    Jay Jennings - trumpet, flugelhorn
Chris Bullock - tenor saxophone, bass clarinet, flute (sax solo)
    Bob Reynolds - tenor saxophone
    Yannick Hiwat - violin
    Tessel Hersbach - violin
    Mara Tieles - viola
    Susanne Rosmolen - cello
    Bill Laurance - piano, keyboards
    Justin Stanton - keyboards, trumpet
Cory Henry - keyboards (the synth solo from another planet)
Shaun Martin - Moog talkbox, keyboards (the guy who took off his headphones during that solo. RIP 8/3/24. He was only 45.
    Bob Lanzetti - electric guitar
    Mark Lettieri - electric guitar
Chris McQueen - electric guitar, baritone guitar
    Larnell Lewis - drums
Julio Pimental - percussion (tracks 4 and 7)
Steven Brezet - percussion (tracks 4 and 7)
    Nate Werth - percussion
This was 2013 so Micheal Leugue was 29. This entire album is fire, but each track is unique. And this is the actual recording of the album. No overdubs. All of the people with red headphobes are.musicians. silver headphones are the audience who are jwaring the mixed i struments instead of the room noise. They have no bad albums to my knowledge.

Everything off this album (all on video btw) is heat. Also the song The Curtain, which is with a whole mf orchestra (not as good as the We Like it Here album, but still tuff).
Welcome to modern jazz man. There's so much heat out there, it's ridiculous.

They all learn their respective parts via a midi file made by the composer in composition software called Logic.
Learning by this method each instrumentalist not only learns rtheir own part, each learns all parts to navigate through the tune, thus no sheet music. It doesn’t hurt that they are all consummate musicians.
They met at North Texas University, a Mecca for jazz instrumentalists for decades.
