Vintage Overlanding
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 20 พ.ค. 2020
Follow along with our cross country overlanding adventure. We pulled this International Harvester Scout 800a 4x4 from a snowdrift in Aniak, Alaska. We towed it 150 miles down a frozen river to our home in Western Alaska. We got it running and driving and flew it to Anchorage, Alaska to drive it to our cabin in Virginia. We're planning for a 40 day trip in a 50+ year old 4x4 towing our tiny teardrop camper. Will it work?.. Who knows but we're going to give it a shot. So if you like Overlanding, Vintage Vehicles, or Teardrop Camping, check it out and follow along with the adventure.
Vintage 4x4s on the Hurricane Creek Trail. Nugget takes a hit!
Join us as we hit the trail with some sweet vintage 4x4s. We will be tearing it up old style. Pushing these old rigs to the limit on what was supposed moderate trail. Through rain, snow and washouts we found ourselves facing new obstacles that pushed us to the limits! Set back and enjoy as you get a close up look at a Scout Traveler, a Jeep CJ5 from @SevenBarSalvage a Ford Bronco, and a Jeep M151a2 (MUTT) working hard, as they were intended!

Join me as I fix a few issues with Nugget and upgrade a couple things along the way. We weld up a door skin, fix the heater blower fan, check the fluids, and more. We're taking Nugget on its first real trail ride to the Hurricane Creek Trail in North Carolina. Joining us will be a few vintage Jeeps, Scouts, and maybe a Bronco so it should be quite the adventure. A couple other TH-camrs are plan...
Scout 800 gets the Steering Wheel Removed and the Horn Fixed! TOOT TOOT
มุมมอง 52411 หลายเดือนก่อน
Found some lost footage of a repair I made to Nugget in Beaumont Kansas while we were driving from Alaska to Virginia. Here are the steps I took to remove the steering wheel and fix the Horn button and wiring. Hope it helps some of you out and if not.... well it might help to know it was 100˚ and I was cooking. ;)

Will it start?, of course it will! Join us as we get our V8 Scout out of the barn where it's been sitting for more than 3 years and take it for a rip in the falling snow. The trail ride goes great, till we hit a wall.
Creek Side Boondocking in Jefferson National Forest

Join us as we do a little creek side boondocking in Jefferson National Forest with a surprised grandson and a wet dog. We find out the Scout leaks like a sieve and Jeff and Cora don't exactly fit in the back of Nugget.
What to do about this Seized Scout 800 Aristocrat?
มุมมอง 1.9Kปีที่แล้ว
In this episode I try several ways to free the 304 V8 motor in our 69 Scout 800a Aristocrat. We fill cylinders with oil and acetone, use breaker bars, and a farm jack but we eventually figure it out, in spite of the face full of oil and a mouth full of mouse nest.... Now to get it fired up.....in the next episode. 🤞

Wild. I went up that in 2015 in a stock unlifted base model Xterra w/ no rear locker, no winch with my wife & daughters. That dirt on the passenger side was WAY higher and filled in. We'd have been screwed if it looked like that when we came through. Would have had to backed down and gone a different route.
It was definitely a lot different than it was a few years ago. Who knows what it looks like now after all the flooding in that area.
Rocks and logs - the original traction boards!
Absolutely. You have to use what you have.
Wonder if this trail even exist anymore after Helene?
I have wondered the same thing myself.
I would hate to see this trail today.
No kidding. They had smooth it out like a normal dirt road a month or two before the hurricane. I bet it is pretty rough today.
Nice cornchucker
Thanks
I’m in central NC and will be running the smoky mountain 500 in my 1975 Volvo ac303! Need to catch up with you guys some time. I hope to run my 48 CJ2a some time too. Are you guys in a group for off-roading?
Sounds great. We stay in contact through a Facebook group for vintage 4x4s in the middle Appalachians. Join us on FB at “vintage rigs and dusty rides”
@@vintageoverlanding will do!
@@vintageoverlanding just signed up. Erick Sowder.
that is a 4 at best , I grow up is NC , I had a 67 scout 800 on 31/10.50 and wheeled hard , I have done rhis trail in many things from my old scout to a honda CRV , nut I have been roads like that all my life But I like that you guy are out wheels your old rigs . can tell yall are not use to wheels around here but keep doing it you will get better ,
Felt like an 11 to me. I see they have graded it back to a nice dirt road now. We may have to try it again someday.
So glad we got to meet up with you today.
Great to meet you guys. Thanks for stopping by.
Great video. Love it.
Thanks for watching. It was a bit crazy. I hear the road is all graded flat now. That was a bit more than we were looking for.
Every time i watch videos of folks adventuring Alaska and Canada i cant help to be in awe with the beautiful scenery. As for that truck blowing smoke, I had something like that happened to me when the my turbo in my other car blew a seal and the coolant was mixing with the exhaust housing and was blowing thick white smoke. Looked very similar to what that truck was doing. I am enjoying yiur content 😎👍
It was a great trip. Glad you’re enjoying the videos.
I absolutely enjoyed every minute if this video. I love seeinf these vintage rigs still going at it. Love the "E brake" 😁👍 Thank for sharing your trip with these awesome rigs.
Thank you for watching. We’re planning another trip in about a month so with luck there will be another video up shortly thereafter.
@@vintageoverlanding I look forward to watching it.
We use to come in from the other way but I had a 87 Subaru Brat came through there around 3inches of snow but I was going down now it's like a interstate you should have see it before they fix the road
I could see that working downhill on the obstacles. Yeah when we went through, it was tough. But I’ve heard they’ve graded it now. I’m sure we could take my wife Subaru through there from what I’ve seen.
They graded hurricane Creek so its nothing like it was in this video its super easy now.
I saw a more recent video the other day and it looked like it had been graded. The wash out was a bit of a surprise for us but we had a great time and hit the challenge head on.
@@vintageoverlanding yea I was worried for y'all but you stuck it out and pulled through awesome job!!
You definitely did not all air down. So glad i have lockers, bigger tires, a more capable rig. Swear it looks like a nothing burger when i do this.
I’m not positive about the army Jp but I know the rest of us did. I’m not sure you air down those hard bias ply tires. I probably didn’t go down enough. If I remember right, I think I was down to about 15. Not sure about the others.
@@vintageoverlanding the army jeep was definitely not aired down. But you can air them down. And most of the rest of you were not down enough. I saw no bead locks. So I can understand your hesitation in airing down. But 11 or 12 pounds would have fared you better. Especially since none of you admittedly were used to more technical trails. It was nice to see you all do it though.
Yeah, I was a little hesitant to go down that far. Anyway, thanks for the support. Not sure we will tackle something that big again, but it sure was fun. live and learn.
Ditch the mystery oil and just use Industrial vinegar you get at hardware stores for cleaning. There is a fellow that did an experiment on pistons and rings in a bucket of mystery oil and then he tried the vinegar and hands down the vinegar did a really nice job, but the trick that I used to do was use iodine, and I learned that from one of my old college, heavy duty mechanic teachers. I’ve never tried the vinegar yet, but I can tell you that the iodine works great, and I’ve never ever been able to find any information on others using iodine, but it works. Just go to any pharmacy and you could pick that stuff up. It helps if you put a little bit of heat to the cylinders with either a propane, torch, or a heat gun and then try bumping it over after it’s soaked for 24 hours. Just put a breaker bar on the crankshaft harmonic balancer pulley nut.
I’ve got to get that thing pulled in the shop and get back at it. I had it moving a little bit there at the end but it’s been a while since I’ve tried. Hopefully it’s loosened up a little if not might give you ideas a try.
lol I watched that video forget how high she came up
Oh yeah, she popped right up there didn’t she. 😳😂
Hmmm just started watching vid of this "road" going back a few years. It seems to me here, being Captain Obvious, that lots of people are leveling up the difficulty in terms erosion and its getting to the point of it just needing at the least some of those ruts properly filled. Maybe that's sacrilege, but this place is internet famous with all that entails. Better IMO to level DOWN the difficulty and infuse money into the local economy than get the road perma closed.
We certainly didn’t expect it to be as bad as it was. However that was a couple months back so maybe some improvements have been made. I will say we noticed a few places along the road that had been improved upon during our trip so I do think it’s checked on at least occasionally.
Ummmm I need more videos I keep looking for ones I might have missed I think you and the wife need to drive across America different direction 😂
Sounds great to me. I promise there will be more but currently I am apparently a carpenter remodeling a house. Sadly, I’m about as much of a carpenter as I am a mechanic. Just a lot of TH-cam videos, figuring out how to do it. 🤣
Pretty impressive wheeling
Thanks man
Did you get your windows to work- I have a 67 800 and my windows are pretty bad
The passenger side will still only go down about half way. I have another regulator to try but haven’t done it yet.
Great video I’d be dripping with sweat did you wipe before you filmed😂
We were cooking for sure!
Wow.. you guys have some great rigs. I enjoyed your video. Thanks for putting this up for us
We’ll get out there for more rides I’m hoping. Maybe a little less air next time. 🤘
Great series to watch hope to see more I didn’t see if you already had the Virginia house or why you left Alaska let me know if there’s a video explaining your move thanks
I don’t think there’s one that really explains it. Just sprinkled throughout. Short version is… we’re retired Alaska teachers who moved to VA to be closer to our families. Retirement money doesn’t go very far in rural Alaska.
What motor is in it ?
A 196 4cyl. The Leaning Tower of Power 😂
I have a 152 and my pcv is attached in-between my intake and the rod cover
I think it’s a little different on the late v8 motets also
Love that scout I had a 70 same color and engine wish I didn’t sell now fixing up a 61 love the 800s though nice video
Absolutely. I’m a sucker for a factory green 800.
Love that green scout
It’s a beast. Check out the video of us taking it out for a little play in the snow.
Use your foot wedge n breaker bar
Ended up using a farm jack and got a little movement. 👍
That last part is technical, I did it with a 2001 Mercedez ML320, did not need the traction boards nor a winch, in three wheels
Definitely different in a 50 year old beater.
Wow I just drove this trail May 4, 2024 solo in my 1998 Jeep TJ and had 0 issues 😉
I’m sure it was all the work we did to fill that hole. 😂 plus 30 years of technology does make a difference. 😉 regardless glad you made it out with no issues because we had enough for everyone!
Shew! I’m a pretty seasoned off-roader and you guys made me nervous. Glad you all made it through safe. That one obstacle is what keeps me from Hurricane Creek in my 09 JK!
Anyway, you earned my follow and a like!!!
Thanks man! It was a 10 on the stress scale for us. Loved the adventure but I think it was a bit more than I was looking for.
We had some fun at that last hole as well. A solo ride after a night of rain. I would love to ride it again. Great Video.
I’d say it was equal parts excitement and terror for us. I’ll do it again someday but not till I get a winch.
Where did you find the roof rack for uour Scout?
The roof rack is just a generic roof rack. The rain gutter mounts are made by Smittybilt.
That orange peaking trough is so cool
She’s a many layered beast
Awesome video I was smiling the whole time. I actually live near Jasper (Hinton Alberta) and yes way to many rules and regulations in the parks but outside of that you can random camp all over. I love how you are running that little 4 cylinder. Curious what it gets for mpg towing. There are some big long hills in the mountains plus you are at elevation so that doesn’t help with the power. I have a 3.3 Cummins turbo diesel for my Scout and it’s got a 4 speed with 4:27 gears. I was concerned about driving long distances in the Scout and how comfortable/loud it’d be but I guess that’s why stereo’s were invented lol
She just chugged along. I’ve 4:27 gears also and an overdrive on the Dana 18 T-case. It’s a good balance if I don’t go with much bigger tires. I tried 31s recently but it was just too much so I backed off to 29s again. I can cruise all day with the camper between 60-65 if the hills aren’t too long. Some of the mts there in Alberta were a bit much but that’s why there’s a passing lane. I was still faster than some of those big motorhomes. 😂. With the single barrel carb I averaged about 16.5-17.5 mpg on the trip. (About 7 kpl). I “upgraded” to a two barrel when I got to VA. Was having serious carb issues by then. Works great but I’m running both barrels open practically all the time so mpg had dropped to about 14. Some upgrades are not improvements.
Everytime I need insperation to start my old 69 Scout project I come to your channel! A $700.00 a month payment on a new Bronco Sport or just fix up my old Scout is where I’m at. I love how your Scout is in a “run what ya brung” state and original not some 100 thousand dollar restoration. Hey does it have power steering? As for the rain/camping we get our fair share of rain here in Alberta Canada so we always put a tarp over the fire rain or shine. A clothes line between two tree works great then put a big tarp over that and tie the edges to the trees. It helps hold a bit of heat in and it can poor rain you’ll be nice and dry by the fire.
Thanks. She won’t win a race and she certainly makes more noise than a new rig, but she gets me there and turns a few heads along the way. No power steering in there. After the trip I did replace the drag link and tie rod. The steering was getting way too sloppy. Still a fair amount of play. The steering box gears are worn. It’s on the list for a rebuild but my lists are long. Eventually…
The old Scout did pretty darn good!
I was impressed with the old girl. Just chugged along like it was made to do it… oh yeah, it was.
All I see there is an old Scout. Wait what? There were Jeeps there too? Lol Haha love your old Scout!
Thanks. Those Jeep guys were none too happy. Best award ever! 😂
Dead sexy. That's more beautiful than any brand new sports car on the showroom floor
My thoughts exactly! Yes it’s cool, nope I’m not gonna paint it. 🤘
Great video, you guys did fine. Very cool to see those classics on the trails
Thanks. I was awfully proud of Nugget and the other rigs. Super impressed. Not sure I have ever been that stressed and having that much fun at the same time. I guess that makes it a great day.
Great video and good looking rigs.
Thanks
Love old school. Glad y'all made it
Thanks man! There was a few moments when I wasn’t sure we would.
Thanks for another great video! I'm, sure I don't need to point it out to you but there should be some rubber in that body mount point just above the piece of exhaust pipe with the dent, LOL. But seriously, replacing the body mounts is going to go along way to solve the doors staying open and the lock cam inside the latch not traveling far enough to roll into to the second latching point (and consequently the doors flinging open in turns, learned that the hard way.) Once the body is mounted firmly and the door opening flex is gone, you may get them to line up and close all the way without having to make any adjustments to the hinges and latch, (or in my case, be prepared to remove fenders, gas tanks, drilling out all the tapered screws and removing and rethreading all the backer plates behind the hinges and latches.)
I’m not really thought about how those would affect the doors but yes, I didn’t know they were missing there. My son and I welded a few patches into the floor back before I took it out of Alaska and at the time I did not have the body bushings and bolts. I kept meaning to put them in, but they have become relegated to the “stuff I should do” list rather than the stuff I have done list. The biggest problem with my doors are that the hinges are sprung where at some point in their life on the Yukon Delta the wind has grabbed the doors and bent them too far back. They were then welded to the door where it at some point ripped the bolts out, it’s on that list also 😂.

Very cool. I loved the MUTT. Such amazing and capable piece of history. 👍
Looks like a great time was had by all!
Absolutely. A great time with great people!
I like your content. The one thing I would recommend about the spotting effort where you transitioned from the 4 portion to the 5 portion is to have only one spotter. More than one and it gets hectic and confusing for the driver. Otherwise, well done!
I agree totally. It’s a discussion we have had since. Live and learn. 👍 Thanks
Great idea thanks for sharing
Worked like a charm! Thanks
Hurricane Creek is a road, not a trail. It’s not a one way road. If it was one way, there would be signs letting people know.
You may be right but that “road” has issues.
@@vintageoverlanding For decades it was a little used regular road with nice creek fords. I don’t know when people started going up there in large groups. The heavy use since it became internet famous has been very hard on the road, it’s literally been loved to death.
Good to see you back out there in Nugget!
Thanks. Gonna push to make sure we’re out there more.
Hurricane Creek Trail is such a great trail. I had a chance to do it about 8 months ago. You guys handled that ruff area about as well as possible. Definitely some hart racing moments there. Awesome that the Carolina Trail Rovers stopped to give you guys a hand and everyone made it through safe. enjoyed the video, new sub here.
Thank you. That’s awesome. I felt like I knew what a pucker factor of 10 was and with every obstacle I realized I had no idea before. I can’t be more thankful they were there to help.
