Vintage 4x4s on the Hurricane Creek Trail. Nugget takes a hit!

- Join us as we hit the trail with some sweet vintage 4x4s. We will be tearing it up old style. Pushing these old rigs to the limit on what was supposed moderate trail. Through rain, snow and washouts we found ourselves facing new obstacles that pushed us to the limits! Set back and enjoy as you get a close up look at a Scout Traveler, a Jeep CJ5 from @SevenBarSalvage a Ford Bronco, and a Jeep M151a2 (MUTT) working hard, as they were intended!

Shew! I’m a pretty seasoned off-roader and you guys made me nervous. Glad you all made it through safe. That one obstacle is what keeps me from Hurricane Creek in my 09 JK!

Thanks. I was awfully proud of Nugget and the other rigs. Super impressed. Not sure I have ever been that stressed and having that much fun at the same time. I guess that makes it a great day.

Great Video Of Vintage Classic Four Wheel Vehicles. I own Jeeps, "J" Jeep Pickup, 1967 CJ6 Jeep Half Cab Fire Brush Truck That Came From N. Caroline At Sealed Bid Auction., Daily 2000 Jeep TJ, My First Pickup 1981 Toyota Hilux 4x4 Pickup, Set Up For Four Wheeling: Custom Bumpers, Winches Front & Back, Suspension, Etc. I Live In Virginia & Hope To Take That Trail One Day, Maybe 4 Wheel With Y'all. Back in the 80's when I was younger, four wheel more, Meet up with others. One had a Military M151 Mutt, I was amazed how it was designed. It went through every thing. He told me they were made by Ford & AMC, Used In Vietnam War. They were light and could drive though Flooded Rice Fields without getting stuck. Most where Destroyed By Military On Purpose as not to leave them for N. Vietnamese and cut in two by our Military prior to Military Auctions, Sold For Scrap. It's A Shame How Our Military Waste Money. M151 Mutt Vehicles were multi use. Center Of Wheel Rim has attachment to power Generators, Water Pumps, Etc. from Tractor Type Driveshaft PTO. Keep On Wheeling & God Speed Your Journeys. Sincerely, Mr. T.

Thanks for another great video! I'm, sure I don't need to point it out to you but there should be some rubber in that body mount point just above the piece of exhaust pipe with the dent, LOL. But seriously, replacing the body mounts is going to go along way to solve the doors staying open and the lock cam inside the latch not traveling far enough to roll into to the second latching point (and consequently the doors flinging open in turns, learned that the hard way.) Once the body is mounted firmly and the door opening flex is gone, you may get them to line up and close all the way without having to make any adjustments to the hinges and latch, (or in my case, be prepared to remove fenders, gas tanks, drilling out all the tapered screws and removing and rethreading all the backer plates behind the hinges and latches.)
I’m not really thought about how those would affect the doors but yes, I didn’t know they were missing there. My son and I welded a few patches into the floor back before I took it out of Alaska and at the time I did not have the body bushings and bolts. I kept meaning to put them in, but they have become relegated to the “stuff I should do” list rather than the stuff I have done list. The biggest problem with my doors are that the hinges are sprung where at some point in their life on the Yukon Delta the wind has grabbed the doors and bent them too far back. They were then welded to the door where it at some point ripped the bolts out, it’s on that list also 😂.
Wow I just drove this trail May 4, 2024 solo in my 1998 Jeep TJ and had 0 issues 😉
I’m sure it was all the work we did to fill that hole. 😂 plus 30 years of technology does make a difference. 😉 regardless glad you made it out with no issues because we had enough for everyone!

You guys were awesome! I had watched so many videos of people taking that trail and was convinced we would be fine and honestly if Walt had not got hung up on that rock, we would have been, but (as my Dad used to say) if ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we would all have a merry Christmas. 😂 thanks again.

I’d say it was equal parts excitement and terror for us. I’ll do it again someday but not till I get a winch.
May wanna check that body mount bolt behind the right front tire, too...because it has left the building.
I do believe you are correct. I have new ones in a bag that are on the list to be replaced. Problem is that list as long. 😂
@@vintageoverlandingBelieve me, I get that! My trail Scout has needed a rear main seal for going on 2 years...
That last part is technical, I did it with a 2001 Mercedez ML320, did not need the traction boards nor a winch, in three wheels

Thanks for sharing this experience. It definitely had some scary moments in addition to the fun ones and beautiful scenery. I was there with Carolina Trail Rovers and I definitely walked away from that obstacle with a new perspective! So happy ever made it out safely!

Great video. Just watching this video had my heart racing. We have been in a similar experience with our Scout that we will never forget.
The video just doesn’t do it justice. Walt in the Traveler was stuck for an hour and I thought I was going to hurl from nerves waiting my turn. If you were in a similar situation with your Scout then my hats off to you. 🍻

Hurricane Creek Trail is such a great trail. I had a chance to do it about 8 months ago. You guys handled that ruff area about as well as possible. Definitely some hart racing moments there. Awesome that the Carolina Trail Rovers stopped to give you guys a hand and everyone made it through safe. enjoyed the video, new sub here.
Thank you. That’s awesome. I felt like I knew what a pucker factor of 10 was and with every obstacle I realized I had no idea before. I can’t be more thankful they were there to help.
I like your content. The one thing I would recommend about the spotting effort where you transitioned from the 4 portion to the 5 portion is to have only one spotter. More than one and it gets hectic and confusing for the driver. Otherwise, well done!

The passenger side will still only go down about half way. I have another regulator to try but haven’t done it yet.
Hmmm just started watching vid of this "road" going back a few years. It seems to me here, being Captain Obvious, that lots of people are leveling up the difficulty in terms erosion and its getting to the point of it just needing at the least some of those ruts properly filled. Maybe that's sacrilege, but this place is internet famous with all that entails. Better IMO to level DOWN the difficulty and infuse money into the local economy than get the road perma closed.
We certainly didn’t expect it to be as bad as it was. However that was a couple months back so maybe some improvements have been made. I will say we noticed a few places along the road that had been improved upon during our trip so I do think it’s checked on at least occasionally.
Hurricane Creek is a road, not a trail. It’s not a one way road. If it was one way, there would be signs letting people know.
You may be right but that “road” has issues.
@@vintageoverlanding For decades it was a little used regular road with nice creek fords. I don’t know when people started going up there in large groups. The heavy use since it became internet famous has been very hard on the road, it’s literally been loved to death.
You definitely did not all air down.
So glad i have lockers, bigger tires, a more capable rig. Swear it looks like a nothing burger when i do this.
I’m not positive about the army Jp but I know the rest of us did. I’m not sure you air down those hard bias ply tires. I probably didn’t go down enough. If I remember right, I think I was down to about 15. Not sure about the others.
@@vintageoverlanding the army jeep was definitely not aired down. But you can air them down. And most of the rest of you were not down enough. I saw no bead locks. So I can understand your hesitation in airing down. But 11 or 12 pounds would have fared you better. Especially since none of you admittedly were used to more technical trails. It was nice to see you all do it though.
Yeah, I was a little hesitant to go down that far. Anyway, thanks for the support. Not sure we will tackle something that big again, but it sure was fun. live and learn.
