    2mins05secs - Not sure if you are trying to talk about the incident with a C208 from Nagambie Victoria AUSTRALIA. They were on jump run at *14000 feet, jumper had a premature opening that took basically the entire tail off. Everyone got out and the Pilot had issues with the stresses pinning the sliding door down and only just got out in time. I have seen the video and saw the impact area when I went there a few months later. In Australia at least the sliding doors are now clipped on opening so they cannot close or jam should the same thing occur. 10,000 skydives here, pretty average number these days especially if you do it for a living. 1) Lost more friends flying GA aircraft in NON SKYDIVING accidents. 2) DRIVING to the airport is still more dangerous!!!!

    We agree on one thing. Don't stall. After that, don't stall. I know surface level aerobatic pilots who have been killed turning back. Further, Idle power is not the same as an engine failure. Lots of people have been killed while training for this maneuver. Just because people get killed doing low level maneuvering, should we teach low level maneuvering to private pilots? Pick a spot ahead of the wings, into the wind and fly it to the ground. I am a surface level aerobatic pilot, CFI and DPE.

    • @KerryDMcCauley
      @KerryDMcCauley 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The problem with that is that when faced with poor landing options straight ahead pilots are still turning back to the runway, no matter how many times we tell them not to. I'm not saying to actually practice the maneuver but it should at least be talked about with the focus being not stalling the airplane. But even talking about has its dangers. I don't think there is a perfect solution.

      It was easy. Of course you have to take some seats out and that can be a pain. Do the seats come out easily in a 340?

    Wonderful! I have a powerchair in which I went to Basel in Switzerland in December 2023 [from Cambridge, UK], as a Patient Fellow at the Motor Neuron Disease Association International Symposium. When on trains and in hotels, I sleep in that, with my trusty breathing machine [bipap or nippy], but it doesn't have the same kudos as a Queen Air RV!

      One of the main reasons for buying the Queen Air was for my father to ride in. I'm sure I'll be able to get a powerchair in there someday.

    What possesses people to risk their lives jumping from a perfectly good aircraft? I used to live up the road from a small town airport that had a skydiving company stationed there. Over the years, so many thrill seekers were killed jumping from planes, and a lot of these folks were not weekend warriors. They were seasoned jumpers whose luck just ran out. One particularly tragic example was a young couple who met as jumpers, and were engaged to be married, only to die together when their parachutes became entangled on the way down. I've often thought that the mindset of someone who takes unreasonable chances is that some qualified person designed and tested something, therefore it must be safe to use. Not really.

    All good points. I would just add one: do not pull on the yoke in any turn of any bank angle so that you stay at 1 g regardless of bank angle. Remember the most important thing: don't stall. Wolfgang keeps asking us, "what does the airplane want to do." It cannot stall itself, a pilot pulling on the yoke is required. Use the dynamic neutral stability already built into the airplane. Use Wolfgang's "Law of the roller coaster." Use the potential energy of the little bit of altitude you have. Watch the crop duster. How can he make a thousand steep turns per day and not stall? Reprogram muscle memory. Does your son have to climb in the turn to crosswind? Would the airplane crash if he held no back pressure in the turn? He already has it trimmed for climb. The airplane will return to Vy, not dive at the ground. Crosswind to downwind? Downwind to base? Base to final? Why are we teaching stall as normal muscle memory? What is so precious about exact altitude?

    So I learned a trick, a long time ago, when I dropped anything on the hangar floor. Take a flashlight with good batteries, and hold it just above to floor, aimed slightly down from parallel to the floor. Anything caught in the beam will not only be illuminated, but casts one hell of a shadow; works every time. I owned a '66 -88 presurized Queen Air. Had IGSO-540s. Great ride, but did it ever suck up the fuel. Had a Cessna 401 at the same time; far better fuel efficiency and speed. Guess which one I flew the most ? One other thing, don't rely on the mags being off, or the "P" leads to be unbroken. When you move a prop to reposition it, rotate it backwards. Got that one from my primary instructor in 1966; a WW2 TBM pilot. Your QueenAir looks like it's been reengined; what's under the cowlings ?

      I'll have to try that trick. I used to fly jumpers in a pressurised Queen Air with those engines. My plane has the Excalibur conversion with 400hp Io-720's on it. WAY better engine but she still burns ALL the gas!
