- Part two of my ferry flight in a Cessna Grand caravan from Virginia to Wisconsin. Flying over the Appalachian Mountains with low clouds and visibility forced me to do some challenging scud running.

Good video, but hard to hear what you're saying. Turn your background music w-w-w-way down or off better yet, it covers up your comments!
Noted!
Hi Kerry, Would it not have been possible to circle up over your airport until you got above the icing and then make for your destination airport? No FIKI on your Caravan?
The tops along the route of flight were reported to be high with tons of ice and the Caravan's de-ice boots are inop. It's a skydiving aircraft, nothing works!
@@KerryDMcCauley😎👍
@@KerryDMcCauley So the real answer to the why would anyone jump out of a perfectly good airplane question is... because it's not?
@@Milkmans_SonWell, Recreational Sky Diving is generally a VFR-only activity, so I'm sure it is fine.
@@Milkmans_Son Lol! Per FAA regs, all jump ships are required to have at least 1.5 rolls of duct tape on them at all times!
Dangerous??🤣
I’ve tandem jumped out of this Caravan at Baldwin. Small world. Got my PPL after that. Read your Ferry Pilot book after that. Recently got my instrument rating. That low overcast had my blood pressure up. Fear of icing is appropriate .
Wow Kerry, you've made it, you're the old and bold pilot!
Most of us don’t have your experience Kerry. Very dangerous flying for average GA pilot. Dumb.
Agree, not something most pilots should try.
ADBS-B is not giving you anything near "real time" weather. It's anywhere from 10-20 minutes delayed. It's a common thing that gets pilots in trouble. SiriusXM is the closest to real-time if you don't have a wx radar. ADS-B is good a high-flight view of the situation and how it's changing. It should not be used for real-time decision making.
It's gotten better, but you're correct, not real time. Srill better than nothing.
And we’re back! Great video P2 Kerry!
You gotta live scud running! Glad to see Scary Kerry back again! Love your old saying “Let’s run away and live to fly another day!” 😅
Great video hope to meet you at Oshkosh this year! Cheers 🥂
I flew 48 years for fun I have hung it up now but really enjoy watching your videos.
Glad you enjoy them!
if your plane is not gonna crash then why are all those idiots bailing out of your plane? you dont seem like a bad pilot lol i got airsick a few times watching this video, then again the sky diver mentality/? there is none they are nuts insane.. and nuts. i said that didnt i?
Nothing terrifies skydivers more than being forced to land in the plane. Kind of insulting actually. :)
Question Kerry- flying those low altitudes- how do u monitor radio towers or other obstacles?
Firstly with my eyes. You have to have good visibility to scud run down low. Secondly I have ForeFlight up and running. It alerts you when any obstacles are in your path.
Scary Kerry - glad you said it...
Greetings from Cape Town. I also operate aircraft Cessna 206”s for skydiving purposes. Would be interesting to know the financial stats for the C208 with the Blackhawk. Yes, that ferry flight must be expensive!
I love Cape Town! I was just there last year. I fly the Texas Turbine conversion but they're pretty similar I think. I started out using 2 182's and 2 206's and went to a Twin Otter then a Caravan. The big thing when moving up to a turbine is the ability to turn loads without too many shut downs. The starts will kill you if you have to shut down after each load. If you can turn the tandem instructors even if the plane sits on the ground running for a few minutes that works.
Was that under 400 AGL for the entire flight? In a pretty heavy single over mostly unlandable terrain? Damn!
No, mostly around 800 average in the low parts. Not that scary. Crossed a few points lower though!
Around my area! I'm from WV, fly out of PKB
i have a flight i want you to do, i am moving to italy after the 1st of the year. i want you to ferry one of my planes. you will not have a problem with it. it is a 1937 piper j 3 cub. no electrics no electric starter. i will follow you in my challlenger 605 lol well how bout a 1972 cessna 182 new glass panel new peterson conversion 300 hp and new paint. just dont scratch the paint. i have a feeling you wont touch the ole j3 cub lol if i had one lol
Sorry, although I have actually ferried a 182 from the US to Italy, I'm probably too busy to make that trip this winter. Sounds like a nice plane though!
"A day in the life". I reminds me of when we flew the Mooney to Florida from Minnesota for the airshow. I hate to admit it, but that flight was a blast! Challenging flying can be fun, but you have to minimize the risk where you can. Your advice to have as many outs as possible pre-planned and prioritized from most desirable to least desirable, is exactly what keep pilots alive. Great video Kerry, keep them coming.
Wow really interesting and challenging! Not for the faint of heart 😮
Not really that bad. Just keep good visibility in front of you, a solid escape plan behind you and stick to my three rules of scud running.
1. Don't fly into the clouds.
2.Don't fly into the clouds.
3. Don't fly into the clouds.
love your youtube channel but your talk it sounds far
25:00 lots of points during this segment where I wonder what options you would have if engine quit.
You don't always have a safe landing option.
Great memories of 1976/77 when I had a job with a helicopter company in the UK. We did pleasure flights at County Shows in the summer and pipeline/transmission line inspections all year round. In the UK we have M1 and M6 going north/south and M62 east/west. Many a time we came down to 300ft to read the motorway signs to work out where we were. All VFR, no GPS, Foresight or weather apps back in those days.... Great fun for a 16yo!!
Ah, the good old days! I do miss them! GPS has taken all the fun out of navigating.
Highway maps, small town lumberyards and water towers use to work too but don’t ask how I know.
@@dougolson304 I miss the good old days!
Hey! There's me!! -KB
Great content
Et ole vaarallisissa paikoissa sitten lennellyt jos tuo oli pahin lentosi 13 vuoteen. No, kova äijä höpöttämään.
Started my flight training in LSE but actually live just north of Baldwin, I can see my house at the end! Fellow F-15 ForeFlight icon user as well, great video!
The F-15 makes me feel FAST!
I guess one advantage of those north Atlantic crossings is you don't have to worry about mountains.
Just ships and icebergs!
Personally I would want the boots working for that flight. I’ve been in similar situations and that snow can turn into freezing rain instantly. Every mission has its risks and you definitely have all the experience! Great video!
Having working boots would have been nice but it's a jump plane and probably haven't worked for years. As someone once said, you ferry the plane you have not the one you wish you had.
Who needs a hotel when you've got a Caravan? Oh, and a sleeping bag!
Wouldn't have been the first time I'd slept in that plane!
👍✅👏 tks man
Brilliant, thanks Kerry. I live with motor neurone disease so these days I get my adrenaline from watching other people doing stuff like this - really enjoyable flight, parts one and two.
So glad you enjoyed them!
Great to see a pro handle a tough flight and share his thoughts. Great way to end the video btw! Blue Skies!
Glad you enjoyed it!
What is the red flag on the HSI ?
I think it's a NAV flag but not sure. I'll look next time I'm in the plane.
What height are they jumping? Thx
13,500 AGL.
@@KerryDMcCauley thx
A good example of how to work with less than good weather. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
TREETOP FLYER SCUD RUNNIN
Best song EVER!
I’m sorry, at what point did this flight become dangerous?
Have you been in contact with ATC ???
Nope.
What was your total flight time on that trip?
7 hours
@@KerryDMcCauley
Wow that’s amazing. I just don’t have that kind of stamina, especially under stressful situations. Well played. 👍🏻
Why not file IFR?
The tops were reported to be high with moderate to severe icing along most the route. and the de-ice boots don't work.
Scud-running!! Glad you're safe. Why the landing gear down the whole time?
Fixed gear aircraft.
@@KerryDMcCauley Oh, Thanks...I've never flown one...I own a 310Q and used to own a T210..Flown Kings, Pilatus etc. Safe travels
IFR? ... that's what it's for - get on top and no terrain worries until the let down. If Pilot and plane are able, file IFR. Nice video to see the country side.
earlier he mentioned de-ice boots are inop
@@Milkmans_Son Thx. DIdn't hear that. That's a go no-go item in bad wx w/terrain.
Too much ice and no boots.
Oops, didn't see that someone had mentioned that. If the boots had been working I'd have gone IFR for sure.
Kerry, can you throw the airfield codes in near the beginning, having trouble finding the places you refer to.
Why not just file and go above. ForeFlight tells you the freezing levels.. Seems like a lot of risk of BS when you can go above when conditions warrant.
There was moderate to severe icing reported and the boots were inop.
I’ve had the same frustration with foreflight alerts. It makes it more dangerous popping up all the time. You can adjust the sensitivity of it.
I'll have to look into that.
