Quirky Queens Journals
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 10 พ.ค. 2020
Welcome to quirky queens 😁🌻😁🌻😁🌻
My name’s Kirsten and I love all things abstract and gelli plate related! Modern art, especially abstract expressionism is my favourite genre, although the more I learn, the more genres I like. I’ve recently been loitering about the colour field videos on TH-cam.
I share my successes, failures and ramblings. I try to make sense of the art techniques and above all, have fun doing so.
So, if you are an art nerd, a gelli plate fanatic and a fan of whiling away time improving at art, then grab a brush or a brayer and ramble on with me.

มุมมอง 7314 หลายเดือนก่อน
#artschool #sketchbooktour #artjournal It’s been 2 weeks since I started college and we have done so much. Line weight, deconstruct and reconstruct. Photographing work. Drawing with inks, continuous lines, mark making, collage and more. I have an A3 giant sketchbook and a junk journal I’ve used as an art journal. This is a vlog of what I’ve done thus far and it’s been fantastic. I hope you enjo...
Abstract sketchbooks tour and artist printmaker festival haul
มุมมอง 6344 หลายเดือนก่อน
#abstractart #sketchbooktour #collage I visited the printmakers festival in Stirling university. I bought some cards and got some lovely paper. I’ve been working away in the sketchbooks too, adding layers, patterns, collage and mixed media generally. I spent a lot of time exploring shape and line. I show the printmakers programme with all the artists listed with their contact details. I hope yo...
Abstract art sketchbooks tour using mixed media
มุมมอง 2.3K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
#abstractart #mixedmedia #sketchbook I’ve been doing a lot of work in sketchbooks over the last few weeks. I’ve applied to do a BFA (starting with HNC) at art school. I will need sketchbooks if I get an interview. I’ve used a lot of mixed media, collage, oil pastels, acrylic paint, kids paint, pencil, charcoal and more. This is a chat about what I’ve done, and the benefits of using a sketchbook...

Painting, sketching and chatting: what have I been up to?
มุมมอง 5006 หลายเดือนก่อน
#abstractart #sketchbook #artjournal Flip through of sketchbooks, some techniques I’ve been trying, finished paintings and some works in progress. Sgraffito on the big gel plate update: easier, cleaner method
มุมมอง 3K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
#gelliplate #abstractart #artjournal I’ve found an easier, cleaner way to achieve sgraffito on the gel plate. I think this is a better version than in my previous video: th-cam.com/video/I_AGGWEtll8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=zneWEUQ0nAo0wjUA I used gel plate, black and white acrylic paint, brayers, paper, cotton buds and baby oil. I’m really happy with the dramatic block printing type effect this technique...
Painting colourful abstract on the big gel plate
มุมมอง 1.1K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
#abstractart #gelliplate #artjournal #acrylicpainting I have a new 16 x 20 inches gel plate from @GelliArts It is magical to work on top of. I decided it should be christened with a freehand painting in bright colours. I’ve recently been inspired by Gillian Ayers who paints the most vibrant, happy, intense and interesting abstract pictures. I used acrylic paints, paintbrushes, a brayer. I finis...
Mini collages using gel prints with a simplified approach
มุมมอง 5717 หลายเดือนก่อน
#abstractart #artjournal #collage I’m continuing my foray into collage. I decided to simplify my approach by working on small squares (I used greetings cards as my base). I limited the papers to 2 or 3 per picture. I used limited colours, adding green and red to subdue patterns…but not hide. I used black and white to add contrast. I also used gel prints as the collage papers, scissors, ruler, p...
Collage art with painted papers and gel prints
มุมมอง 4267 หลายเดือนก่อน
#abstractart #acrylicpainting #collageart I used card as the base for these collages (from product packaging). I used gel prints, painted papers as the collage papers. I used acrylic paint, pan pastel (a colouring pencil would have been better), gel medium (to glue). I created shapes with the papers. I created shadows, a colour palette, positioning and a finished piece with the acrylic paint. I...
Repeating patterns on the gel plate with stamps and pens
มุมมอง 6777 หลายเดือนก่อน
#abstractart #gelliplate #collage I used 140gsm cartridge paper as I wanted to make some sturdier collage papers. I used linocuts, foam stamps, jumbo marker and acrylic paint pens. Also acrylic paint, beaters and the gel plate. I wanted some repeating patterns in a single colour on a white background for the project I have planned. Please note drying time for most pulls approximately1 minute I ...
Let’s make Artist Trading Cards (ATCs) using gel prints, paint and stencils
มุมมอง 3987 หลายเดือนก่อน
#abstractart #acrylicpainting #miniart How to make beautiful mini artist trading cards? I used a gel print, cut into 2.5 x3.5 inches. I used cheap poster paint, acrylic paint, pan pastels, stencils. I also used a resist technique so i could add a distressed look to the cards. The gel print was made using hannemuhle paper. I do suggest good quality paper…or gluing your gel print to a sturdy pape...
Easy collograph on the gel plate using children board book
มุมมอง 8398 หลายเดือนก่อน
#gelliplate #monoprinting #abstractart I made a collograph using a child’s board book page. The surface is easy to carve and shape. I carved a vase of flowers in a loose abstract style. I used acrylic paint to transfer to the gel plate. I painted with children’s poster paint to give transparent colours and a painterly effect. I hope you enjoy. Kirsten 🌻

Loads of clever ideas! Thank you for sharing them ❤ The hot glue stencils are brilliant and now I cant wait to make spooky trees. That was my favorite idea. The ceramic tools are neat too. My head has exploded with ideas now.
Hi, thank you!!! Hot glue gun stencils are one of my favourites too. I love the blobs that gather, they make such nature type shapes, like branches or limbs. I’m really glad you liked it ❤️
Absolutely magical! So talented.
Hi Jessie, thank you so much!!! This is one of those times where perseverance was the right decision!!! 🥳
Fabulous video. Thanks for all the demos!
Hi Cynthia, you are so welcome…and thank you too for watching!!
I love it! Beautiful❤! I was wanting to help you pull it😂. It’s so huge you almost need 2 people.
Hi art girl, I really like your profile picture, I love whimsical flowers!!! It was so big 😂. It’s also gelli arts, whereas I’d only used gel press previously. I know they’re the same thing but there is subtle differences I wasn’t prepared for. I have that one hanging on the wall. I like how happy it is. ❤️
@ 🩷🩵🧡
You’re a creative genius! 🥰 I can’t wait to try this. Thank you for sharing!!!
Thank you too for watching!!!im really glad you like the videos. I did some textiles at college…using paper, which led on to this idea. I’d literally tried to make a video for 3 full days prior to this, but nothing was good enough. I hadn’t been able to do a video for a while due to college taking over…so it had to be worthwhile. I was so relieved this gave such good results. I’ve actually put a few of these in a collage in a journal and added some paint pens. They look good. I’m trying to get a few pages to show some ideas. 🥰🥰🥰
❤
Hey Kirsten, I'm a new subscriber from Tennessee, USA. Darcy from @DarcysMixedMedia sent me to your channel. The marks you made are fantastic. Thank you for sharing and giving me some ideas.
Hi Helen, thank you!!!!!! I love Darcy…she is my best TH-cam friend…although she has lots of friends on TH-cam!!! I love her experiments and tendency towards grungy. I’m sorry I’m so late in replying. I am at college full time learning art. I also hate receiving generic replies when I comment to someone…so I’d rather wait to speak properly. I really like mark making, it’s amazing that you can make the same mark in so many ways. Like a dash with a pencil, pen, light or hard pressure, gel plate transfer, colouring either side…I could go on and on 😂 It’s lovely to meet you and you’re profile picture is so approachable, happy and beautiful ❤️
@@quirkyqueens Hey Kirsten, Thank you for your lovely reply. Learning art is marvelous! Being new to arts and crafts is a new world for me. In my 70 years, I've learned a few crafts but never stuck to them. You could say cooking is my art form of choice. There are many colors and texture choices-hot and cold, hard science, and just winging it! I like Renoir and Monet but don't appreciate Picasso or Rembrandt. I'm learning they have their place in this world, but I don't have their art on my wall. So, making marks is a challenging learning curve for me. Perhaps appreciation should be my word for the year! My profile picture was taken by my daughter the day I donated 8 inches of my hair to "Children With Hair Loss." They make wigs for young children up to their 21st birthday. They take old ladies' hair with gray hair like mine! It's time to donate again. Nice to meet you, too. Make today a great day.
Kirsten what a treasure of a find you are. I'm finally starting to get multi layer pulls now thanks to your showing of the process and explaining the failures as well as successes. I've been using Gelli for a long time but am mostly a lino/screen printer and never seemed to find the time to spend experimenting to learn how to do one pulls. But with your help I'm getting there; still a way to go but there is so much potential. Thank you for showing and explaining everything so beautifully! (and thank you for showing all your cool play doh stamps in another video too... I am so excited by how my plates turn into unique beautiful patterns on Gelli, such an exciting alternative to my usual way of printing them). Love from NW England 🥰
Gorgeous Kirsten! I must stop watching your videos in quick succession, I end up down so many wonderful rabbit holes and achieve very little! 😄This is such a pretty and different effect from the gel plate I've not seen before. You're an absolute treasure as always, thank you!
Aw thank you!!! I loved them but they’re not as striking as other methods, but subtle is important too. If everything was bright then nothing would be 😁🥰
Kirsten, I love all the different stamps you’ve made to make beautiful marks and designs. I’ve been trying to figure out how to make the vertical and horizontal lines, and now I’ll get my sewing machine out and create what you have. Thanks!
Great idea!!!! I'm trying this today!
Kirsten, you are a joy! I love your approach, your experimentation, the free and unrestricted way you work. For an artist who struggles against "perfection" you are not only inspiring me but also helping me let go. If I ever bump into you up North I'll buy you a brew and butty to thank you! ❤
I will take you up on that!!!! A cup of tea is one of my favourite things!! Thank you for this. I try to stick to the thought that if I’m looking for perfection, use a camera. I love the flaws and “mistakes” generally take me down a rabbit hole to a new way. Happy new year for tomorrow. I plan to sleep through the bells as I love getting up early on New Year’s Day, like a good start to the year. ❤️
@quirkyqueens Happy Hogmanay to you too! I'm also getting an early night... my New Year's Day is going to be buried in paint and paper and Gelli plate joy and want to start early. I shall toast you with my morning tea ❤️ (and thank you for the camera tip, I will definitely use that 😊)
What a great video - I've watched a few gelli plate videos and I really enjoyed this one a lot, lots of info, explanation and inspiration. Thank you 🥰
OK Kirsten, I can see I am going to be binge watching your videos and will need a favourites playlist all of your own! Your experimentation and ability to think of really cool and unusual ways to make marks and patterns is so inspiring. What on earth am I actually going to do today? So much new stuff to try!
Subscribed! I've been using a Gelli plate for a long time now, and yes I've been using variations of things you do here. However I love how you've explored things further and come up with some beautiful ways of being able to do more controlled images on the plate. Wonderful stuff. Thank you!
Hi aave, thank you!! I think the gel plate has taught me so much about art generally. I watch a lot of printmaking videos on TH-cam and kinda tweaked stuff for the gel plate. I love the fast results too, gives a good sense of achievement which I love!!
such great ideas! thank you!
Hi Alice, thank you!!!
Love these! I tried a similar idea with toilet paper rolls and they were not as easy to work with so I quickly gave up. Long pieces of paper would be so much better!
Hi Karen, I tried it with cardboard too (the outer box with a layer of corrugated too). It gave a couple of goes but then gets a bit mushy. I think the coffee table books are good quality and sized which makes them more water resistant. It’s all trial and error, more of what I’ve tried doesn’t work but then you get an accidental good thing…which is how I discover most things 🤪 Toilet paper tubes have so many uses, I suppose we need to let them have the odd fail 😂. I wonder how they’d stand up if the sides were sealed with glue, then dried before rolling into a shape actually 🤔. That could have potential 🤓
@quirkyqueens as I was reading your comment I was thinking, "hmmm, I wonder if I could add a layer of gesso to seal them and maybe they won't get mushy?" Trial and error is the most fun way to create, in my opinion! Thanks!
@ we’ll always find a way!!! 😂 it’ll be good to have different thicknesses to the lines too, so sealing it is probably the best way to go. I might go hunt some toilet roll tubes for myself now 😂
Nice. Thank you for sharing your process.
Hi Diane, thank you!!!
What a clever idea.
Thank saa, I have so many of these big books…I need to find more uses!!
Super cool! Must give this a go! TFS!
Hi sherry, thank you!!! 🥰
I love this !!! Great job !❤️
Hi Mary, thank you. Cheap and easy…my favourite way ❤️
Super video. What great results 🤩
Hi Sal, thank you. I like the fine liner look, I think the more they’re used they’ll lose that fineness, but easy to make so not a big issue 🥰😁
What beautiful stamps! Maybe adding some Liquitex Slo-Dri to your paint will keep it wet longer?
Hi Katanya, that’s a brilliant idea. I have some retarder I could try. I have water based block printing ink but it reactivates with water which is so annoying. It’s slow drying but not permanent so I prefer not to use it. SLO-dri sounds a much better option. Thank you ❤️
@@quirkyqueens It's cheaper than buying Open acrylics!
Loving all the textures from the paper stamps! Brilliant! ❤❤❤
Thanks Darcy, I’ve made a few bigger ones now too ❤️❤️❤️
Love the designs that were created. ❤
Thank you so much!!! I like the simple shapes repeating, it’s like a fine liner ❤️
❤
I hope you’re good Ceri. Currently enjoying your studio tour ❤️
Very nice collections of stamps. Brilliant and it looks easy enough. Time to try it out ❤
Thanks Vicky!! Easy, cheap and good results. What more do we need ❤️
what a fantastic idea -- this is something i can put into action tomorrow. thanks so much for sharing this technique. 😻😻😻😻😻 5/5
Thank you!!! I’m gonna make some larger ones, try get some bigger versions of the z one for sure!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Finally, you're back. This is brilliant!!! Merry Christmas ❤
Thanks Tabitha!!!! It’s hard when you take a break cause of life!! You did the same but noticed you’re back too ❤️
@quirkyqueens yes, life happens. I'm back and ready to craft
I was so excited to see that you had posted a video! Missed watching your creations and loved this innovative way of stamping. Glad you liked the card - have a wonderful Christmas 💕
I deliberately waited cos I wanted to show your card on the video and surprise you!! It’s hard having the time to make a good video, as my head is full of college projects and it’s distracting. If I’m distracted I see it in the video when I’m editing and it doesn’t feel good enough. I loved my card and angel. The purple jewel star is on my tree ❤️
Great idea. I will have to experiment and make some paper shapes of my own. Thanks for sharing this idea. Very pretty prints also.
Thanks Debbie!! I’m glad you liked it. I think it gives a fine liner look to the patterns, which is so pretty.
Hi Kirsten, this is so effective, you are very clever. Will be getting my gel plate out and having a play for sure. Merry Christmas from Australia. xxx
Merry Christmas to you too Leigh!! I can actually hear you saying it to me out loud in Australian 😂. Sorry I took so long to reply, I had a family shindig on Saturday night and a mighty hangover 😱😂❤️
Hi Kirsten - this is fascinating - very inventive and the prints are unusual and effective. I might try this. Thanks!
Thank you!!! I like the thin lines it creates. Not sure how many gel plate sessions the lines will stay crisp for…but I reckon at least 5 anyway, plus they’ll still make blocky marks and are easy to make.
Great to hear your voice again....hope you are getting on great ❤
Hi Jennifer, thank you!!! It’s been a while but college is more demanding than I expected. At least I know what to expect now, so in the new year I can be more organised to try make time for more videos, even if it’s just a quick one to say hi. I started art school to get knowledge for videos!!! 😂❤️
These are so cool! It would be nice to have a step by step video of how you made these!
Thank you!!!!!! I will try do that, I’ve been making some bigger shapes which will be easier to show as my big fingers will be less obstructive 😂❤️
Merry Christmas, Sister!!!
And you sister!🎄🤶😎 I hope you’re good Barbara ❤️
Oh it’s soooo nice to see you! Glad you are doing well and keeping the art wheels running! This quilling is soooo yummy! Love it love it love it. 💕💕💕💕💕💕 happy merry everything to you and yours 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
Merry Christmas Mary Ellen 🎄🥳❤️ Sorry I’m late replying. Family shindig then hangover 🫣😵💫 College is getting in the way of making videos…but I love it!!! I need to be more organised ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
What a great idea!
Thanks Teresa. What would we do without book pages!!
Hi Kirsten… how is life..nice to see you..⁉️ this is very cool and some great results… thx … merry Christmas 🎉
Hi Reni, it’s been a while!! I left it so long the fear took over and I didn’t want to disappoint!! I’m gonna try do a what I’ve learned at art school video over the holidays. It’s lovely to chat to you too Reni!! Merry Christmas 🎄💖
brilliant idea ! :-)
Thanks Freda!! Love a cheap alternative 🥳
This was so cool, I'm collecting techniques before I start making gelli prints and this one definitely deserves a bookmark! Thank you 💓
You are very welcome! Thank you too for watching!! I think working with our own handmade stuff is more exciting…and cheap!!! 🥳💖
I love the idea of using materials at hand. It also results in a completely unique (and wonderful!) result. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks joann!! I love to use what we have around, especially as all the designs are unique to us. I’m hopeful these should last a long time too, might lose a bit of detail but they are sturdy. You know I’ll have at least 100 of these by end of the week!!
Hi Kirsten, nice to have you back. You were dearly missed! Blessings!
Hi Vera, thank you!! I have missed YT too!! I will never leave it so long again, the longer time went on the harder it got as I didn’t want to disappoint anyone, even myself!! Blessings and happy holidays to you too.
This is brilliant! It’s exactly what I was looking for - a new way to use material at hand, no buy, and so cool. Thank you so much. Wishing you and your family all the best.
And you Kristine!! I do think there’s a lot of potential with just bending and curving some long strips to make some good stamps. I resent the price of foam stamps, why are they so expensive?
Hi Kirsten, nice to see you here on youtube again I think the marks look stunning. Very inspiring. Hope you are well and wish you a healthy and wealthy Christmas. Britta
You too Britta. I know it’s been a while but college has been very hard work!! I have also recently slipped a disc in my back which is causing a lot of pain, especially when sitting. I have been meaning to get in touch with you please know I think of you often ❤️ Merry Christmas my wonderful friend 🎄🤶
Beautiful ❤. Have you tried dipping your scoring tools in baby oil?
Hi Judy, not yet. I will need to try that. I think they’ll glide well with it and slow moving. I will have a video soon, I’ve left it so long I’m scared to make one in case it’s rubbish 😱😂 I’m thinking of doing a normal video then doing one about what I’ve learned at art school so far. I hope you’re holidays will be lovely ❤️
