I agree as flawed as curly is and he should've detected the signs earlier and taken responsibility the problem is he didn't until it was too late. I think the emphasis on the cartoon horse and the lack of doors isn't curly's fault it's the company's and capitalisim and its ruthlessness at the end of the day.

Maybe this is a hot take but Anya should not be apart of the narrative in the later half of the story. If we are experiencing jimmy in his mind, that means we are seeing his actions and emotions. Anya having any time in the narrative after the first half would imply that jimmy is remorseful for his actions. Anya being in the back of his mind would basically act as acknowledgment of his wrongdoing. But the whole point of jimmy’s character is that he DOESNT FEEL GUILTY ABOUT ANYA. The only person he respected was the one guy getting him out of trouble. Anya being apart of the narrative, drastically changes. And I would say this change is negative as it makes what is an objectively villainous and complex character boring.

I took a peek into the fandom tag just to see cool stuff and immediately saw pro life propaganda using the characters. Like yea I'm staying away from social media sites and just sticking with TH-cam analysis vids.

Curly saw the bigger picture Jimmy was, someone who pretended to be nice, but was just rotten. THAT AINT FRIENDSHIP!!! i think it makes perfect sense that anya doesn’t appear, for the very reason you mentioned- jimmy doesn’t care about her, all he cares about are the consequences his action might have on him, ie the baby. the baby is proof of what he did, and thus it haunts him. I think it’s good writing to have anya not appear further. to me that just points out how apathetic jimmy really is. also finding it hard to imagine that anyone could’ve missed what exactly jimmy did to her, in my opinion the game said it as explicitly as possible without straight up using the words “jimmy raped anya”

I interpreted Curly not being able/willing to see the dead pixel as a metaphor for his lack of willingness to see Anya's concerns/feelings/predicament. He's such a peacekeeper he literally wills himself to be blind to it.

The bit were jimmy is talking directly to the pony , i thought anya may or been represented there by the fact that the background was the nightsky referring to the night time screen in the lobby and the pixel convsation it's just an idea though (also loved this video ❤)

Honestly, I really liked Jimmy because he was so realistic. I mean, oftentimes when assault happens, why would you think of the victim? Usually it’s justified somehow and I’m sure that it was justified in his mind. The issue is, we don’t really KNOW Jimmy. Not really

I think there's something you missed about Anya and the narrative of Mouthwashing, and how in truth she haunts Jimmy more than anyone else. Someone already pointed out that Polle himself IS Anya while also being a representation of the baby, but I'd like to explore this further. To understand what Polle truly means, we need first to have full understanding of Jimmy, the Pony Express and his true motivations. As nobody is born a villain, what was it that made Jimmy become one? In Pony Express and the capitalist dystopia of Mouthwashing, all that matters is if you can perform your job, no matter what. You are constantly exploited, underpaid, living in conditions nobody deserves to live, your humanity does not matter to them, you are nothing but a tool, you are meaningless. It's not too far fetched to say Jimmy was born in bad conditions, too, as not only have his struggle on Earth and position in the corporate ladder been stated in the game, in the Q&A they reveal Jimmy doesn't have hobbies, because he can't afford them. Be it because he cannot afford to waste time, or literally because he does not have money to afford better things, both bring you to the same answer: he has lived his life exploited by capitalism and cannot afford anything but look for a better life. Why do I need to say all that? Because that is his true motivation: under this bitter and evious person is someone who has had no control over his life, as it was taken from him by the reality of capitalism. As it was taken from him by the Pony Express. Something he constantly looks to regain by taking it from others. Besides his clear associations with the want for control throughout the game, he has clearly stated he likes Tulpar because of the control they have that, even if minuscule, is better than what he had on Earth. To Jimmy, Polle, as first and foremost a mascot of the corporation, means control. Control that is not his. Control that he has lost. As we all know how the story goes, Jimmy gained control over Anya, becoming the dead pixel in her once beautiful night sky. Always there, haunting, nobody else can see it just as clearly as her, it cannot be ignored no matter how much she tries. A singular dead pixel is enough to feel like you have lost control over everything in your life. Desperate, so desperate to get it back, to go back to how it was. She later learns of her pregnancy, and it only furthers this hopelessness of getting it back. She tells Jimmy, now he has also lost control of the situation - Then comes Polle, not as the control of Pony Express, but the control of the baby, the control of Anya, because he cannot ever get the same control over her he did before. Every time Polle appears is a reminder. A reminder that Jimmy cannot control it all. To Jimmy, Polle is the baby, yes, but Polle is also Anya. She sleeps next to Polle after the crash - it is her way of trying to have as much control as she can in this horrible situation where she has to sleep next to her abuser: Polle will speak if anyone gets close. Jimmy hates Polle. Jimmy breaks Polle; As Anya locks herself in the med bay, Jimmy has to face Polle to get the mouthwash: silently. Don't make any noise. You will have your control back as long as you do just that. Else, Polle will get you, Polle will control you, Polle will eat you alive; As Jimmy talks to Polle, he speaks like his son, but he speaks in Anya's color. The night sky-Anya's night sky-shines brightly behind Polle. She has gained control over Jimmy, even if only in his memories. She is his dead pixel now. Always there, haunting, nobody else can see it just as clearly as him, it cannot be ignored no matter how much he tries. And he tries, he sure does; As almost every single of Anya's cards has her face covered, you can see that there's a single one that isn't. Like a single dead pixel. Haunting. Jimmy has no control, as much as he tried throughout the whole game, he does not have control. Jimmy has no control, because of the baby, because of Anya. Even if he does not care for her, caring more about a baby that was never born, even if he tries not to think of her face, Anya is there haunting him in every single moment. And now he has to take responsibility. But he can't, so he will try to regain control in any way until his death. Anya is there. She has always been. Despite everything.

love this video, definitely making me reflect more on the game after playing two nights ago. what you said about jimmy seeing the fetus as more of human than anya (who is just represented as a womb in that sequence) got me thinking: i think jimmy’s portrayal of his unborn baby as a horse instead of a human not only distances himself from his actions and dehumanize anya but also shifts blame as he couldn’t possibly be responsible for getting anya pregnant by assault. instead it’s the fault of pony express, and he’s not to blame (and trust me they do have a role but it’s just jimmy absolving himself once again)

Polle being more like a donkey than a pony I feel could be interpreted in 2 ways: 1. The Pony Express is making a literal ass of itself not caring about the workers they hire and the dangers they put them through with the horrendous equipment quality and upkeep. Donkeys are also well known working animals great for keeping dangers like Coyotes and other canines at bay from farms. One could say that Polle looking more like a donkey and larping as a pony is symbolic of the company itself, they stopped caring about the work they had to do and focused on having a good image, thus letting the coyotes run rampant on their farm. 2. Donkeys are known not only be vicious to all canines, but are also the reason why mules exist. Mules are the offspring of male donkeys and female horses, and a hinny is the reverse. I think one could interpret that Polle looking like a donkey despite having the horse imagery all over emphasizes that it’s possibly a mule, and one of the most notable things about mules is that they can not reproduce but as a trade off they are sturdier than horses and faster than donkeys. Fertility in other media is usually a single of prosperity and potential for something to blossom into something new, however in the case of animal breeding it’s often seen as cruelty as fertile animals are used to effectively spawn genuine atrocities of human natures out of a self-serving curiosity (biggest examples of this are the Spider Ball Python, Pugs, Chihuahuas, and short-faced cats, all of these suffer from neurological to skeletal issues/disfigurments). If Polle were a mule, I think it’d symbolize that the company shouldn’t even be a thing but it’s still kept going out of an innate self-serving want to cut costs and safety measurements despite on paper being a good thing for them, while also being symbolic that Polle (the apparition of it at least) shouldn’t have ever come into existence, that the ass should have never been allowed to harm the mare in any way.

For me personally, as someone who has watched people play mouthwashing and have seen people in fandoms demonize characters for mistakes they did in a stressful environment/situations, I feel that everyone on the ship is a victim, besides Jimmy. Anya is the most obvious one, with her being SA by jimmy and seeing how he disregards her as a being in those moments of hallucinations, taking a back seat of the narrative yet still haunts, I will explain that point later… and by later I mean now, basically even if you don’t pick up what jimmy did to her, or notice she is missing during Jimmy hallucinating, you can still find remains of her in these sections if you look hard enough. Daisuke and Swansea were sadly in the wrong place at the worst time thanks to Jimmy snapping and crashing the ship thanks to Anya keeping the baby, leading to Daisuke death and Swansea getting shot by jimmy. Both being just workers, Daisuke having a whole life infront of him and being the metaphorical sun on the ship, being snuffed by the black hole that is jimmy, while Swansea was the no nonsense mechanic and I feel like he had a feeling something was wrong with Jimmy and that’s why he hid the fact that the last cyro-pod wasn’t broken, so Daisuke would be able to live his life… and we all know how that went. And with curly, he is the perpetrator of the mistake, and because of it, he was mutilated by burns and by jimmy hurting and eating him slowly as time passes by. While he made the mistake of not dealing with jimmy, I feel like there is more going on with his relationship with Jimfuck that possibly lead to him not being able to confront him and lead to the crash. I know that some enablers of abusers tend to be unknowingly abused themselves, and the reason why I’m saying this is how a lot of people has pointed out that curly has a people pleasing type of personality which could easily lead to him being used despite him being captain by curly. Seeing how he treated the others, I wouldn’t be surprised if curly and jimmy’s relationship was a toxic mess as jimmy both has a guilty non guilty way of handling Curly and what he has done to him. I’m not sure how to describe what I mean when it comes to jimmy having a guilty yet not remorseful feeling towards what he done to curly, and it’s more of a gut feeling of mine. It popped up with me remembering how he used Curly as a food source after everyone else is dead (I am surprised nobody has talked about this), maybe hinting at how he ate away at curly in a horrible manner, but curly didn’t know until he couldn’t take the pains that numb the pain? Like there is dead people and insane Jim here ate the leg of the only other living person on that ship… I think that articulate the vibe of jimmy and curly friendship to me. Another comment mentions how the crew of the ship are possibly running on low amounts of sleep, and possibly even less than five hours, leading to decline in the logical thinking and reasoning, Along with emotional regulation and memory. None of this excuses curly and his actions, it’s only me trying to find an explanation what lead up to the events of the game. Also, I’m glad you brought up the fact that what happen to curly isn’t a act of karmic justice or anything like that, but more of a cruel thing that happen to him thanks to jimmy actions to crash the ship. Curly did not deserve what happened to him, and calling it anything other than horrifying is saying something about oneself. This is an enjoyable video covering Mouthwashing and how a lot of people miss the plot of the game, and the themes of it as well.

It seemed to me like Till did at least accept Ivan's affections, at least at the very end after he lost Mizi. I personally like to headcanon it was sooner and they had a second fiddle situation going on for a while, but it is particularly heart wrenching to think Till only went along with Ivan's advances after he thought Mizi died and might not have if he knew she was alive. Clearly Till didn't return Ivan's feelings to the extent Ivan yearned for him though. Ivan's obvi on some "you are my god" shit even if he doesn't say as much explicitly, he is the one character we see successfully sacrifice himself for the person he loves.

This video is sourly needed after coming across a genuine reddit post about how "anya is secretly the manipulator and jimmy is the actual victim" and it's level of theorizing is so based on "anya is secretly evil" bullshit ignorance it feels like going insane.

Pony Express is definitely not an all-encompassing company, it’s a failing corp that employed frankly dead-end losers, the last company still using manned crews, Anya won’t be able to get a job because she failed nursing school, she’s not part of the job market, but hey Pony Express figured “good enough for the sole medical professional on a ship.” The med bay doesn’t just have a lock while the bedrooms don’t, it’s got one on the inside only, like why, was this supposed to be some other room initially? If you want to secure the drugs you don’t have a random medicine cabinet in the hall and a lock only on the inside of the med bay. Daisuke isn’t really even qualified for his apprenticeship. Swansea might be ok now but we’re not fully clear on how long he’s worked for the Pony Express but my guess would be… maybe around 15 years? It’s not a grand omni-present megacorp run by monsters, it’s a horrible shitty company plagued with mismanagement as much as it is human-rights abuse and cost-cutting measures to make a dying business close to profitable instead of just switching to automation like everyone else

Swansea brings up that the Pony Express was one of the "last manned" shipping companies, which means that all of the rest of them are automated. I think the concern of finding another job is mostly due to the fact that the Pony Express didn't need much in the way of qualifications, not that the company is a mega-corp that owns 90% of the universe. I think this is also supported by Curly and Jimmy's convos

Gods I remember when I finished the game Curly and Anya became my favorite characters because I saw so much of myself in them. I became a victim of S/A when I was a little girl, and got into an emotionally and verbally abusive relationship with another girl when I was in high school. I sadly related a lot to Curly's responses to Jimmy by placating him, because that's exactly what I did with her. She had a horrible home life (like Jimmy with his "struggles" back on Earth) which made me feel bad for her so whenever she did something awful I would just wave it away and fawn for her. There was one awful thing when she outright punched one of my friends in his face for a reason I don't even remember anymore (not like it matters) and I still found myself defending her! He rightfully cut me out of his life and stopped being friends with me, which meant that when she turned around and later on in our relationship punched me in the face of course no one was around to defend me. Why would they? All this to say that when I finished the game Curly's story arc personally struck me. In my personal opinion, I took his story as a warning of allowing your abuser (because yeah I'm one of those people who took the few bits of information we get in game to point that their relationship was pretty toxic and abusive towards Curly) to seep out and harm others. It showed me a horrifying story of how victims, like me, could become enablers to our abusers because we've gotten conditioned to it. And that allowing the abuse to spread and harm others doesn't make you a good person. Curly was the captain and he should've done a shit ton more to protect Anya. But because he wanted to placate Jimmy he not only hurt her more, but contributed to the rape culture that surrounds them of silencing victims. That's why I think it's so impactful that Jimmy's abuse towards Curly becomes, again in my opinion, WORST after the crash. Because when we allow our abusers to fester, they become emboldened towards their abuse to us when we, sooner or later, are alone with them again. Of course I just want to reiterate that none of this is me trying to excuse Curly or downgrade him as just a helpless victim of Jimmy. Curly was still... incompetent at best when it came to Anya and he really is a good stand in for how men can be so stupidly blind when it comes to rape culture and the patriarchy's views of gender and safety. (Also gotta say this, your hair and makeup was breathtaking! I love the stars on your face and the braids, beads, and clips in your hair is stunning! 100/10 you knocked it out of the park!)

" i needed to hear that not only to check myself but also to get some.... insane internalized thoughts that were brewing about my own disability as a direct result of that mindset in check .

Noticed this in a playthrough last night but even if and when Anya DOES show up in Jimmy's hallucinations/delusions, she's obscured or barely even noticeable. It's pretty apparent towards the final chapter where Jimmy is walking through the room with the floating crew ID cards. All of the cards on the wall are of the team members (minus Curly's), but Anya's cards are obscured by Jimmy's. All you can make out is a name, but her face is hidden but his card. Felt kinda haunting to notice that. Even when she shows up in his mind, Jimmy is always blocking her out.

Anya will always be my favorite character, because sadly, I can relate to what she's been through. Seeing all the apologists saying Jimmy did nothing wrong is absolutely enraging. Every character deserved better (but Jimmy) and I think that's why most of us relate to at least one of them. Every character can mirror someone in their own way and frankly that game is a masterpiece

Also can I say not everyone was on jimmy side, im not judging you or breezly. Superhorrorbromike had a bad feeling about jimmy. Granted not the SA but he kinda knew something was off about jimmy

i think there's something to be said about the mouthwashing community (& the game itself, if you read it uncritically) and subtle forms of ableism/sanism. There are loads of places it resides in, but i'm just going to talk about one i do not see anybody talk about. (quick warning!!!!! i will be talking about jimmy; i do not like him and what he symbolizes but it DOES need to be said) the game & fandom, no matter what intentions it has subtly plays into demonization of personality disorders in the sense of the traits that jimmy holds and his actions in the story, his writing not being dissimilar to any other "big evil cluster b abuser" caricature and as result, alot of people (who DO NOT know what they're saying) go on to pair the idea that jimmy has traits of ASPD/NPD with the fact that he's an abuser and should die, inherently continuing the ableist belief of "cluster b abuse" or abuse being inherent to any specific disorder. This is likely unintentional, i understand this, but in the long run it simply does not matter. I have NPD and BPD among a couple other disorders. i do believe, no matter how you view it, the way that he was written will only hurt people with demonized disorders. I like mouthwashing, but please, PLEASE, if you (the average fan) do not critically review what you say about jimmy and how you perceive his character you WILL just end up being derogatory towards people with personality disorders (because i HAVE seen some of you use cluster b-specific terms to describe him.) I have come across this SO many times. Any character with personality disorder traits obviously not reflective of the general population with a personality disorder (e.g being an abuser in some form when most people with PDs are victims of abuse rather than perpetrators, me included) is GOING to be perceived as the general population of REAL LIFE PEOPLE who have a PD or it will negatively inform how you view people with personality disorders. Its always going to be exactly like trying to create an anti-war or anti-violence movie; AKA it backfires spectacularly and reinforces awful beliefs in other people.

8:18-8:24 the reason why this works for doing so is also the same reason for not doing so. Jimmy is constantly in the back of Anya's head, but she's never in his. Your attacker gets to haunt you for the rest of your life and they don't give 1 fuck about you and how they hurt you, that's incredibly real. Whenever men get exposed for SA they're more concerned with their reputation, that's their primary consequence if it isn't also a baby, they couldn't care less about the person or people they hurt.

Daisuke is actually awesome but Swansea is my favorite he's got such a fantastic arc
