i got really into undertale (just the og game not the aus) early in 2024 and there is in fact a small devoted fandom still chugging along with the ghost of the 2015-18 era looming over everyone and random flareups every time toby fox posts a newsletter or smth. shoutout to everyone still writing undertale fanfiction in the modern day yall are real ones
I think for a lot of dead fandoms you either get a really happy or kind of disappointed nostalgic feeling but I love to rewatch an episode or two of dead shows ever once in a while
You know what's a "deaad fandom" that I wish wasn't...? Mushi-Shi. TvT The fanart from that anime is just so pretty, and the fandom as a whole seems to reflect the show in jst how calm it is. Everyone's just vibin' and I'm sad I was so late to all of it. Actual "dead fandom" I was and still have conections to is the Minecraft fandom, specifically the "Minecraft OGs" fandom. We basically read/wrote/drew stuff about Steve, Alex, Herobrine, Entity303, Null, Notch, our own OCs, etc, into these hyper realistic Minecraft worlds with fantasy-esk stories going on. Still a very much Minecraft vibe, but there was a lot going on other than that. I'm still in a small, close-knit part of the fandom. We've known each other for like five years now. Many of us have even met one another in person, some even a lot more than just once. And though I'm not in the fandom so much as I am loosely tethered to it thanks to the friends I've made, I can still say the embers that remain are indeed still burning.
As a Woy Fandom veteran, I was around for the long and fruitless attempts at reviving the series with the SaveWoy campaign. While it kept the fandom alive for a while longer, the burnout was rather sad. I left long before it, mostlydue to the amount of toxic people I realized I was surrouneded by in the fandom, and took the few forever friends I made with me in the migration.
@@AlleyDreamer Eh, it was mostly on Discord the toxic parts were, though there's a slew of stories to tell from the golden age of the fandom. The show still deserved a third season, especially after that cliffhanger end credit. But it walked so other shows could fly and that is a beautiful thing
Nah, the Undertale fandom is still alive. Undertale Yellow (a fangame that was developed for 8 years that had a great impact on the fandom whose launch trailer has 1.7 million views), Deltatraveler (Fangame launched a new section), TS!Underswap (another Fangame), Underevent, basically a nintendo direct of Undertale/Deltarune projects, (I recommend watching it) and Underverse, an annual animated fanfiction series with great animation They are living proof of the status of the fandom. Sorry for bad English
Oh yeah definitely hard agree. I feel like back in the day people were in candoms for like 5 years minimum. Like star trek lol. The internet definitely has caused us to just move on to th next thing wayyy to fast
Blaseball is one that had a super hard deceleration, which I saw firsthand -- I think that game was only really sustainable as a pandemic lockdown activity, both for the Game Band staff running it and for the fandom at large. Especially doesn't help that the official Discord server got locked, so any fandom remnants are extremely decentralized and difficult to find now
You know, I forgot this video was supposed to be out today until I looked at my notifications five minutes ago. Which was funny because I was waiting so long for this video to come out Out of the 10 forgotten or dead fandoms mentioned in this video, I was the one who gave Idol Infinity a shout out Unfortunately, with you talking about bigger competition wiping out Idol Infinity is a pretty reasonable conclusion to come to, which is something I also said myself, but I also felt like a part of WHY Idol Infinity ended not having so many fans and how people gave the staff a hard time (besides them giving out little updates for the project), but rather because of it being a Chinese property and people who already are into idol stuff just, not wanting to give it a chance, and would rather stick with Japanese content instead (This can also be said about how many non Chinese people still have very xenophobic opinions about China, and generally have negative opinions and viewpoints about the country itself, but just give Japan and specifically South Korea LOADS of praise, but that's a discussion for another time.) There were also two controversies I didn't talk about involving people believing one of the units GLORIA having racist outfits based off what Nazi's wore, and the other controversy being that some fans on Weibo believed that the animation for a Chi Xiaoxiao card was apparently copied from another idol franchise Idolm@ster?? Like that specific controversy got so bad the offical Weibo account of Idol Infinity had to write out an APOLOGY.) I did feel a little sad knowing you didn't talk much about i.i, but I feel peace knowing I got other people to know the project exists :')
Omg yeah I was running out of time in the video that's my bad! But omg there's a lot to uncover there! I can't believe they gave the girls nazi outfits 😭 that's insane. Can I ask how you got into it? And as for them not being popular because it was a Chinese property, I definitely feel that! Honestly I've gotten into a lot of stuff without knowing and later found out it was a Chinese property! I think things are getting a little better about it espically in Fandom /anime/comic space! I'll definitely check it out more in depth in my own time! Thanks for submitting!
@@AlleyDreamerOkay for starters, it's fine if you didn't have much time, But second off, I don't exactly think that GLORIA's outfits were ever based off of uniforms NAZIS would wear. No this does not mean I support the Mustache Man, heavens no, but when you actually read about GLORIA and the three characters in the unit, you would realize that them having outfits similar to those that who would put Jewish people in confrontation camps, now sounds like a very false claim (which it was) Because the character who even *made* GLORIA have the military aesthetic in the first place was Lin Moli, a 14 year old girl who loves everything military related since her family is also in the military, and claims herself as the so-called "leader" of the unit, when in actuality the real leader is her care-taker, Xiong Daihua. Now for context, Moli is Russian, and if you search up if Russia had any relations to WW2, you would find results of them mostly being neutral, not really *picking* a side from either Poland OR Germany for the most part, so it would make no sense for the main artist of the project to base the outfits off from Germany, when that country literally has nothing to do with Moli as a character. If I recall, I think that assumption of it being racist was from non-Chinese, (or possibly even non-Russian people as well) on Twitter going to such a conclusion, without even looking into if what they were saying was true. But luckily the drama didn't go too far from what I've heard and seen. And as for how I got into i.i? Well, I found the project through a TikTok account talking about it. I think it was about showing idol stuff and "teaching" the audience about the history of different kinds of 2d content that feature idols. They mostly talked about Japanese series', while they did talk about two non-Japanese projects. One of them being Idol Infinity. I ended falling in love with the art and music, I tried to find whatever content I could with ANY of the characters, whether fanmade or official, and learn everything I can about the story and the franchise as a whole, and here I am now :)
@fizzycat3506 ah ok that makes a lot of sense! I'm not totally into 2D idol gorupd but I do listen to the music occasionally I will definitely check it out!
Yes, monster high is the superior line, but they did exist at the same time! Its funny cause monster high is an example of a fandom resurrection like new content and all 😂😂 (it would be great if you did a monster high vid low key jkjk don't have to if you don't want to. The new cartoon is better than the new live action movies) Question! Are there stickers on your mic, or is it a decal? I've seen other people stickers bomb theirs, so I was curious? Bakugon was amazing, Bayblade was too, and i didn't even know they're rebooting Byonicle, and that makes me so hype!!
I feel like AMC’s Interview With The Vampire fandom is pretty close to what live action shows used to be, albeit a bit niche because many people (men) don’t wanna watch it cause it’s unapologetically queer. But like that fandom is so lively and so fun while still being small enough that everyone sort of knows each other? But I feel like it has potential for longevity since the show is ongoing
I don’t think Undertale (well, UTDR) has gone more than 3 years without new content. The original game coming out in 2015, then Deltarune CH1 in 2018, then CH2 in 2021 and it seems we’re getting CH3-4 either this year or next year. Honorable mentions to Undertale Yellow, which had mostly the same impact a new official release would’ve had minus the theorizing. I don’t think the fandom ever died or revived, it has been pretty consistent the last 9 years and doesn’t seem to be petering out like the MLP:Friendship is Magic fandom on it’s later years (which also lasted about 9 years). Like, the early fandom did die a little, but it was less of a death and more of a metamorphosis.
Sorry! I was going off the list my subscribers put in the firm I sent out! But I definitely agree I didn't know their were people still in the portal Fandom 👀
I feel like all the controversy and discourse is what ultimately killed the Steven Universe fandom. People lost sight of the show or disagreed with its direction so everything just became discourse so it wasn't fun to interact with others in that space any more. The same thing happened with my personal favorite dead fandom, Homestuck. These and Undertale were bascally the staple fandoms of my high school years. The Undertale fandom by comparison really seems to have aged like the finest of wines, and I really think that's because most discourse in the fandom was about fandom crap, not really Undertale itself.
FINALLY SOMETHING TO WATCH SO I CAN STOP WORRYING ABOUT WHETHER I AM GETTING A NEW JOB OR NOT (job hunting while working a s*itty minimum wage service job sucks lmao). At least half of the fandoms I'm in are either super niche and small, or dead. I personally like it that way because it usually means that the more toxic, vocal fans have moved on to other fandoms, and the "dead" fandom is more chill and fun to interact in. You don't have to deal with as many toxic shippers or bad takes based on terrible media literacy skills compared to, say Supernatural or whatever. I love your cat and I will die for both Mabel Pines and your cat.
Omg I hope you get the job! It's so rough in the job market right now 😭 and absolutely! It can be so much better when the Fandom is small, gtfo toxic people. And shadow loves u back ❤️
Oh boy oh boy, Bionicle mentioned, love me my Bonks. The bonk community is hurting for content, feels like we're the Gargoyles Fandom, only even more obscure, somehow.
@AlleyDreamer I hope it can come back again one day, if Lego allows it to, it had a lot of ingredients that modern audiences would appreciate, deep lore, fun characters, plenty of mystery, it even did that Undertale AU thing where everybody trades story roles for a few serials, years before Undertale came out. The setting has tons of potential for a modern Fandom, creating OCs was pretty much a play feature of the original toys (A few became canonized, and important in canon at that.) and the stories had a lot of serious issues being addressed, albeit through the eye lenses of immortal alien cyborgs.
5:40 - This has the opposite effect on me. I might be curious about something, but if pressed too much, I will grow to dislike it and refuse to experience it.
