Salty is it possible to do the same to the K-Line DRGW F7 A-B-A set? Would be nice to slow it down for slower controlled speed when tackling the Rockies. It's so fast I don't think I've ever got it above 40% throttle for fear of it flying off the track around my ceiling.

If one can’t keep track of what one owns chances are ya have too much. Neat thing about short ore cars is they follow any size curve well.😊

Awesome info Matt!! I’m a big fan of the BCR’s. I have a huge pile of those white aerodynamic batteries. They need to get tossed next time I clean up my bench. 🚂😎

I put a BCR in everyone of my MTH engines. Never an issue, they are great. They say power up for a minute, I have never had to wait that long.

Great information on this subject. Everything that I have is conventional. I do have an MTH Rail King Ps-4 Pacific, which is conventional, but upgradable to PS1. I’ve thought about it, but haven’t pulled the trigger, yet. The original board with the whistle works just fine, although I would like some better sound. Nick has the best live stream, as far as discussing information and procedures. Plus, some great running. Joker’s is also a fine stream. Railchief74’s livestreams are always fun, too. I usually try to catch them, but I’ve missed a few, since I’m on a long vacation. An excellent video, as always.

Nice collection of the Williams engines. I also have a good collection of Williams. I have the RI BL-2's also, they are a sharp looking locomotive. The Rock Island paint scheme is one of my favorite roads. It's a very classy looking design especially on the BL-2. The Williams engines are some of the most robust modern can motor designs. They have been as reliable as any of my postwar Lionels. I have noticed that they are quickly becoming my go-to runners just because they have excellent conventional run characteristics and Trainz practically gives them away. Sweet looking Chevelle. I had a 68 Chevelle SS 396 in high school in the 70s. Sold it for $750.00 in 75. It was a gas hog that got about 10 miles a gallon. Gas was just outrageous at .34 cents a gallon. It was a beast. The Fastest car in my school. It set a class record for hauling a keg of beer to a Friday night river party😊.

Thanks, this is the very reason I avoid MTH models. I have one set of conventional Rock Island engines. It has a QSI board that could be upgraded to PS1. It only has a terrible sounding horn. Is there a sound board with engine, horn, and bell sounds that can be upgraded without using a battery or BCR? Given the choice, I'm not interested in crew talk sounds, but that's not a deal breaker for me.

You are right on. Discovered this back in the 90s. One thing I might add if you are lucky only the chip will be scrambled. MTH sold a kit which allowed you to change out chips. Don't think they are still available. One other note have a cab forward Sound went to he'll. Sas told by longtime repair probably was speaker. Looking for replacement. Suggestions?

Okay Salty I had no choice but to track this set down and buy it after your overview. Really enjoying it, it is indeed fast! Great looking set, box art is sweet and that Rocky Mountain blurb is a gem. I noticed the trailing A unit was a lot lighter than the other two units since it is an empty shell, added tire balancing weights inside the empty fuel tank. Each loco is now from memory 2lbs, 10 ounces, seems to have less wheel slip/chatter when starting when pulling a heavy consist.

Great information Matt. Those old NiCad batteries are a recipe for disaster, but thankfully I did my homework when I bought my first QSI equipped locomotive and did the battery swap in it soon after getting it. Some of my engines have a bcr, but most I use the Energizer batteries. Imo they are the best to use especially for the price. Also great job in mentioning QSIs sounds in terms of accuracy, as they went to great lengths to ensure accuracy, even going to specific sound recordings, museums and railroads with specific locomotives. One good example is the e-8 sound recordings they used are actual recordings from an e-8 at the Illinois Railway Museum, as well as actual steam pump sounds from SP cab forward 4274 from its last run over Donner Pass, and N&W 611s steam pump sounds. QSI really gave great sounds for model railroading and it's a shame they exited the 3-rail market, all because of patent disputes with MTH and focusing on the ho decoder market. That ultimately led to them going out of business.

Good info! I’ve been learning this battery stuff as I have been exploring O Scale/Gauge the last 11 months. I recently got the Williams Niagara 6010 with sound, didn’t realize it had a battery, it is qsi so I should have, the loco would stop go stop go, once I figured out there was a battery I slapped a bcr in it and it now operates properly. One thing I will say is the bcr is slightly bigger than a regular 9v or old MTH nicad, so that energizer nickel hydride is a good plan b thanks for that tip.

I would not recommend doing this. The voltage to each motor will not be the same, the speed on each motor will not be the same due to voltage difference. One faster motor will be pulling against the slower motor. Motors may run hotter. Honestly do not see any good electrical reason to do this. If you want to run slower just reduce the throttle lever back. A gear ratio change would be a far better solution to just greatly reduce speed and increase torque.

Uncle Salty, you pushed me over the edge on this model. I was already looking at it, then yt suggested your videos. I found one with sound from the bay. It needed a little tlc. I was having issues where it would stop go stop go, I swapped in a BCR, so seems it was a battery issue. I also had issues where it would derail, I found that on left turns the front truck would swing into a low hanging compressor nodule on fireman’s side, I ground that down a smidge. I also installed traction tires, kind of a bear to get on the front drive axle, but got it done. We are now cruising reliably around the ceiling layout. Hope you’re doing good, look forward to your videos.
