Living in the US often feels like being stuck in a never-ending simulation: car dependency, isolation, skyrocketing costs, and a work culture that leaves no time for life. In this video, I share why I traded that for the walkable cities, affordable living, and relaxed lifestyle of Spain. Watch to discover why the American hustle culture feels suffocating, how Spain helps you enjoy life at your own pace, the shocking differences in food quality and safety, and why moving to Spain can be the best decision for your family.

    09:02 That 10% you're talking about is NOT a tip, it's the Impuesto Valor Añadido (IVA) an european taxe, that is charged in Europe when making payments for purchases of products. The normal VAT on purchases in shops, etc. is 21% of the value of the product, and there is the reduced VAT of 10% which is the one paid in the hospitality industry, and is the one on the bill you show. In Spain it is ILLEGAL for the restaurant to demand a tip, the tip in Spain is always voluntary, and NEVER obligatory, if they ask you for a tip (strange), they are deceiving you and it is reportable.

    Mari, once again you crushed it! We loved your video and sensible takes on WHY moving to Spain is a great idea. We couldn't agree more and it's the same thinking we have begun our NLV journey with the goal of getting to Valencia. Times have been tough in the US and tensions are high. People are divided and filled with hate, brainwashed by the steady stream of misinformation they are sent. There's no reasoning with them, or anyone. It's time to go. Besides all that, the common sense reasons you lay out make it a solid idea even if you are not influenced by the political wildfire (and California wildfires we are all going thru). Who wouldn't want to have a happier, healthier, more affordable and in the moment life? I'm afraid to read the comments as I see venom everywhere, even on channels where moving to another country is the theme. Why would you even watch videos and content creators if you disagree with the topic or are just happy where you are? The million dollar (euro) question. Anyway, you're amazing, keep it up. When we get to Valencia, hopefully we can meet you guys and share some tapas and a vermouth or tinto de verano. Hasta pronto! 😀

    Yes in Spain Salaries are lower but prices are not so high as in the states. You can find clothing, fuel and services in pretty reasonable level. I have heard that in US you need more than 100 bucks to fill the fuel tank, and private companies charge you in every single minimal thing you do taking the best example from the Health system, made by the rich only for the richer.

      The president we have now in Spain is a walking disgrace. Every time he sets foot on the street he faces public ridicule and his entire circle is being investigated for corruption. In addition, there are many indications that he rigged the last elections and has a history of having already tried to do so in the internal elections of his political party, for which he was expelled from the political party. The only reason he has ended up where he is is because he is a manipulative trickster who is very good at finding people who are in agreement with his corrupt practices... Today, many in Spain consider his political party to be a criminal organization (Supreme Court included).

    Hi Mari! So, you can apply for the DNV while being in Spain on a different visa (non-lucrative, student, etc.), but only if you stay legally in Spain and haven’t overstayed your visa/permit. You can’t apply for the DNV after your tourist visa has expired, but if you apply before it expires, you can stay legally in Spain while waiting for the visa resolution. Just make sure you still have some Schengen days left on a tourist visa before applying for DNV. Hope this clarifies 🙂

    Thanks for the video. What most people dont realize is that salaries in Spain are typically 2/3rds lower than what they are in the US...at least in my field they are. In the US making money is the 1st priority because healthcare, housing and food are so expensive, and while the food is more expensive it is also toxic. We have gluten/dairy issues in the states, but not in Spain. Because our expenses are so high it forces you to prioritize money and there is little time left for the really important things in life like community. I was astounded when I received a quote for private healthcare in Spain for $350 a month for my family of 4, plus high quality food at 1/3 the price, along with housing at 50%-60% less t, so its no surprise that the Spanish have more opportunities for community and live longer.

    First of all, I want to say that your videos have caught my attention, but like those of many other Americans in the USA, you paint Spain as a paradise for the lazy. And that is annoying, here people work very hard, and for less money than in other countries. There are many enterprising people and our industry is not dedicated to making clay figurines, there is a strong industrial, agricultural and service network. It is not all about siesta and tambourines.

    • @mari_schultz

      You’re absolutely right. I’ve worked with Spanish people before in a pharmaceutical company, and I know they work hard. However, I’m not implying that Spanish people are lazy, not at all 🙂

    This was a great video, especially for Americans researching a move to Spain. We are looking to relocate to the Costa Blanca, around Calpe, Denia, or Javea in a couple of years so have started considering some of what you are discussing. We are finding that housing is pretty similar to our Upstate New York region. For example, I am able to sell my 3 bedroom home here for about 320k which would only purchase a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment there...but I think the trade off is location. The Costa Blanca has so many advantages for outdoor experiences, plus the climate. Perhaps you could do another video on the challenges for Visa, taxation, and any other preparations necessary. For example, to apply for a Visa in the US, you will need proof on health insurance as well as proof of a residency...meaning you have to rent an apartment and pay for it without even knowing if you will be approved for the Visa. Thanks again for taking the time to post this!!

    • @mari_schultz
      @mari_schultz 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you! 🙂 Exactly, these places that you named are considered to be luxurious towns on the Costa Blanca. They are known for their high-end apartments, villas, and excellent amenities and are popular with expats and retirees that's why the prices are more expensive. I assume you’re referring to the Non-Lucrative Visa. It’s true that you’ll need private health insurance to apply for this visa covering you for a whole year. However, for proof of residency, it can simply be an address of a short-term rental (airbnb), or even that of friends or family. You do not need to commit to or pay for a long-term rental before receiving the visa. Thank you for the suggestions, I would definitely cover this in another video!

It is a social club, you will make some friends, and a lot of acquaintances, that will help you with your ordinary needs as asking for a good plumber and thinks like that, and of course improve your Castilian Spanish, and your knowledge of the Valencian culture or even learn some Catalan language, call it Valencian there.

    Sobre el tema de los días festivos, la solución mas fácil es descargar el calendario laboral de la comunidad Valenciana por internet y ya se puede programar la vida diaria sabiéndooslo que días son festivos. ( que no son tantos por cierto.) Yo vivo en el principado de Asturias y no todos los festivos son iguales para todo el país cambian algunos según en la comunidad donde se reside. Se busca el calendario laboral de la comunidad donde se resida y listo.

    Hola. Me alegro que "os traten" bien Valencia y los valencianos. Todavía lleváis poco tiempo aquí. Observo que no habéis hablado de la "fiesta" principal de Valencia : "Las Fallas". Vais a "flipar" (como decimos aquí) Del 1 al 19 de marzo, aunque el 23 de febrero es la1ª "mascletà" en la plaza del Ayuntamiento.(Informaros de qué se trata) Os va a costar un poco entenderlas, el por qué de esas fiestas, pero que os sirva de consuelo, que hay españoles que todavía no las entendemos...Ja ja ja ...Son unas fiestas INCREÍBLES

    How is wifi in Spain? I teach online, so I would need a strong internet connection for this to work. Open to living almost anywhere with a good internet connection. Preference somewhere that will not need a car to get around.

    • @mari_schultz
      @mari_schultz 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Dani! Spain generally has excellent wifi coverage. Most major cities and towns offer high-speed fiber-optic internet, which is perfect for online teaching. Even smaller towns are catching up with reliable connections, though very rural areas might still have slower speeds or limited options. Unlike the US majority of Spanish cities and towns are walkable with great public transport. We live in Valencia and we don't have a car. You can look into Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Malaga, Valencia, Seville or smaller cities like Alicante, Murcia, Cordoba, Gijon or Logroño. Just look into airport and railway connections so that you can move easily around without needing a car

    In Spain there are only 14 annual holidays, apart from Sundays. These holidays are divided into three groups: 1. National holidays, i.e., for the whole country (10). 2. Holidays of each region (2). 3. Holidays of each city (2). These rules are for the whole country. So there are NO holidays every week.

      @@mari_schultz Pero eso no son festivos. Por ejemplo el 19 de marzo es San José y es fiesta en Valencia, coincide con las Fallas y en alguno años es festivo en otras comunidades pero no siempre. Por eso hay que consultar el calendario anual de tu localidad que como te han comentado es estable todo el año y solo tiene 14 fiestas anuales
