Happy 35th birthday Sam Coupé!
The Sam Coupé was an 8-bit micro designed as an upgrade to the ZX Spectrum that launched 35 years ago. It had a great specification but never achieved sales success. What's it like to use one in 2024?

Commodore CDTV - The Amiga that flopped

Up until Commodore went bust, the Amigas were generally commercially successful, whether as games machines or as productivity workstations. Yeah, 1989 was way too late for advanced 8-bit micro. Also, several design flows. For graphics chip stealing CPU cycles, they could have done something like ST has, having memory running on double CPU freq. so that both graphics and CPU can access memory bus on alternative RAM cycles. Also, lack of any hardware support for graphics means that the most attractive mode for games (256x192x 16 col.) is practically unusable for any scrolling games as 6 mhz CPU stand no chances smoothly moving 24kb framebuffer.

    I tried my hand at forth at college back in the 80s. Could never get my head around reverse polish notation 100%. Putting the operator before the values to be calculated just felt wrong and unintuitive. I'm sure there must have been a reason to do it that way (less memory maybe?) but I really couldn't get on with it. I never used or even clapped eyes on an Ace, I used forth on a homemade z80 based computer one of the tutors had built himself.

    Defender of the crown looks amazing when i would see that on release day of the cdtv then i would buy one. As i remember the cdtv was not cheap and the games were not that cheap either. At that time nobody own a cd Burner so "copy games" was not that easy as floppy discs. So for me "as teenager' when the cdtv came out, it was a nogo for me. I just got my parents to buy an amiga500, computers were not that mainstream like today. Most adults think of them as expensive toys becouse they see no real useage. Nothing they could also do with a pen and paper... But for me it was so great times with the c64 and then amiga500 ... it was like a jump like from 560gt to 4080gtx all this digital sample sounds and the high Resolution with so many colors. Man such upgrade we will never have again and at its time this was hightech. Miss commodore so much

    Provide the source documents and source code for that thing and I'll create one with modern parts and put it out there as open-source. I find it extremely difficult to believe that the parts are not available now. More likely this is exactly the same as a lot of other retro projects where the person gets bored and falls off the side of the planet never to be seen again lol! Or assuming the guy is hoarding everything like usual send one to me and I'll reverse-engineer it and add it to all the other hoarded projects i've reversed and open-sourced. Then you can make as many as you want for ~5 bucks each. But this thing is really not required. EPROMs are not rare or difficult to find. Even if that type is (which it isn't) just make a small board that will adapt any other type. I've produced and released as open-source several adapter boards to use as non-standard mask ROMs using a common EPROM and even used a common and cheap TSOP48 flash ROM on some of them. This is primarily for my area of expertise (arcade games) but they will work with any chip that requires the same type of ROM. As far as just replacing ROMs none of that is difficult or expensive. That thing you have is nice but it's way overkill for a kickstart ROM that might need to be updated once every 5 years assuming KS development continues. In reality even KS3.1 is good enough for most people and as far as games go nothing requires anything higher.

    For some reason there was a demo on the tape which came with the Ace and did autoplay, but I never found out how it did it. This bomb of a machine soaked up so much money and time that it delayed the launch of the Amiga 1200 (and may have even deprived us of a 16-bit audio chipset for the AGA machines). Between that and wasting time and money on the Amiga 600, C= really added delays onto delays for getting a follow-up chipset to ECS out stores (already long overdue). Ironically, you could attach a NEC external CD-ROM drive to an Amiga 500 or 2000 back when the CDTV was about to be launched making the CDTV pointless (except to check the "Set top box" item on the ol' computer manufacturer bucket list).

    When the CDTV came out, it joined the likes of the CD-i in confusing the public. Nobody knew what the hell a "multimedia" machine was, or what you'd use it for. Hyping up digital encyclopedias and interactive maps didn't help. Everyone was afraid to call them game consoles, and the general public just scratched their head wondering why they'd want one. As for Defender of the Crown, I loved the graphics, but I sucked at the strategy part. I'm not sure what I was doing wrong, but every time I tried to move into another territory, I'd get slaughtered. I could never win the jousting, and I sucked at attacking castles, but I seem to recall winning the swordfights. Small tip: You're supposed to be moving forward, not retreating. ;)

  • @danyoutube7491
    @danyoutube7491 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I have to say that Defender of the Crown looked like it got a decent upgrade for CDTV, very nice animations for the sword fighting, and nice voice work. Obviously the downside is that the game is still just a collection of nicely presented mini-games, but it's nevertheless a good example of the sort of advantages CD-ROM could give to games at the time.

    I had one, but it was a let down. To use it as an Amiga I had to disable the CDTV rom to have enough RAM. It did look extremely cool with the black keyboard and floppy drive and it was great it had MIDI. It should have had AGA an 020 and 2MB. Basically the CD32... The low spec is what sunk the sales and it's underpowered specs for its release date in the Netherlands made me sell it pretty fast for a PC.. ow.. and the missing joy ports.... OMG what a stupid decision. The remote just sucked extremely for gaming.
