  • In the early 1990s, Commodore sold some Amiga machines with Unix, not AmigaOS, installed on them. This made me wonder: 30 years later, can I get Unix running on my machine?
    All the software featured is available from www.amigaunix.com along with set up instructions and background to the wonderful world of Unix on the Amiga.

    Back in the 90s there was a big Amiga store in Miami that had a giant pile of Amiga Unix boxes in their showroom with a 3000UX tower on display. Bought a box just because. It should be around here... somewhere.

      A 3000UX tower?! Never even heard of one of those.
      I've read that Commodore tried but failed to sell the A3000UX to Sun so I can imagine there were a lot of machines they were suddenly wanting to offload.

    I read that a company called Ameristar Technology ported Sun NeWS (Network extensible Window System) on the Amiga, and the platform was mentioned in the NeWS book (Gosling, Rosenthal).
    I wonder if somewhere there's a copy of this window system for the Amiga, and if it was meant for Amiga UNIX or not.

    I had installed the RedHat Linux distro and other Linux releases over the years on my beefed up Amiga 3000, but I never did mess with Commodore's release. It would be interesting to mess with it if there's enough apps to support it and compile some of the latest Unix/Linux software from source code.

      I'm no expert but I think Unix SVR4 is so old that it's going to be hard work to get any vaguely recent software running on it. But don't let me put you off!

    If it will work on stock a1200 videocard?

    • @wrangleramiga896
      @wrangleramiga896  ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it won't. Amix is very picky about the hardware it runs on. In principle, it might run on an A1200 with '030 but you'd need a supported SCSI controller to load the OS and no A1200 video card is supported

    Great video! I want to install this on my Amiga 3000 with GVP Spectrum 24. Can you share your hardfile to help me out?

      Message me on EAB, Amibay or A1k (username Wrangler) and we'll see what's possible. But I doubt it will be "lift and drop" as you're using a different gfx card and likely a different HD with different geometry.

      @@wrangleramiga896 Thanks, I've sent message on Amibay. Hdd gemetry is not a problem since I will write image file to SD card for my real Amiga. I've got default xwin to run with Spectrum24 but got a problem with Openl

    Would a disk cloning utility with similar functionality to Norton Ghost work? Could you create a disk image of a fully installed Amix system on the disk?

    • @wrangleramiga896
      @wrangleramiga896  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not sure. Another way is to install Amix on WinUAE on a hardfile and just copy that in Windows

      Quick question, would you be able to help me get an A4000TX PCB? * just the board itself by the way , I'm trying to find one for a while to attempt a custom chipset re-implementation on FPGAs. We will run out of original custom chips sooner or later, so yeah this is important. It also enables to upgrade the Amiga architecture and future proof it.*
      Still, I've tried to reach Hese etc etc etc without any success on any chance at getting one of those. Kind of running out of hope...

      By the way I actually have 4 Cyclone II protoboards ready to play with for this and I also have a Honeywell PCI board with some serious FPGAs for repurposing as well as a 68040SE which do help with come crucial parts of the system.

    why was it important to transfer the install.svga file on a MSDOS disk rather than a AmigaDOS disk?

    • @wrangleramiga896
      @wrangleramiga896  หลายเดือนก่อน

      As i recall, Amix doesn't have a driver for AmigaDOS disks, only MSDOS...

    Wrangler, is that a Piccolo SD64?

    • @wrangleramiga896
      @wrangleramiga896  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it's the "regular" Piccolo card. I don't know if the SD64 version works with Amix.

    Man -k locale (no capitals). Might get you somewhere with that keymapping issue.

      Thanks for this suggestion! Unfortunately, I don't know enough about Unix to do much with the output (which refers to setlocale and localeconv). I'll do some research!
