  • Getting hold of an original A3000 PSU is impossible so I try out the new A3000 PSU enclosure by Szymon Gosk (arymanx), modding a PSU in the process.
Warning: if you are thinking of trying this mod yourself, this is a serious project and mistakes could damage your Amiga or cause injuries.

Really cool video. I am not brave enough to perform a transplant of an ATX PSU for fear of destroying the Amiga board. I wish I had your skills. I salute you sir. You actually convinced me to take the leap and Hese built me an AA3000+ and A4000TX board. Then ACILL built me an 4000D board. Really cool what is avaliable these days as a relative new Amiga fan.

Thanks for the excellent video. I'll be building 3 of these soon so it came out very timely.

Very helpful video. I was able to put mine together with just your video which I really appreciate. The only difficulty I had was with crimping the 15 TE Connectivity AMP Connector pins. I have an iCrimp tool that’s highly recommended, but it mangled pretty much every pin. What crimper did you use? Thank you!

Glad the video helped. For crimping, I just used a pair of pliers!!

I just received my kit a few days ago. Your tutorial is great. I have one question on the power supply. Is it a switchable main power input? Other words will it accept 120 volt mains power found here the States?

It will depend on what donor PSU you are using. I believe the FSP250-50GUF I used in the video takes an input voltage from 100-240v but as I've thrown away the original case for it, I can't check now, so don't take that as definite.

I believe the original A3K power supply outputs 230W. The donor for this new enclosure is 250W? I am curious if there are higher wattage donors that could be used as well. I recall a company named Micro R&D made a "Bigfoot 3000" power supply that offered 300W. Back then, filling your A3000 with spinning drives, an accelerator, RAM and slot expansions could justify the extra power but 250W is probably good enough for our more energy efficient additions of today.

I wouldn't read too much into the max power rating (which is what the PSU draws from the wall). More significant is the current rating on the 5v line but even then I'd take what is stated on the PSU and divide by 2 as the usable max current.
