Hello, it's been nearly a year since you posted this but I just watched it today. I love Kubrick overall, however I have never liked or really understood this film. So I ventured to find somebody who might explain why this film is so beloved.. Your analysis had an interesting take but I could not connect to it as I have never felt sympathy for the main Character of this film. Were we the audience ment to feel bad for a violent rapist for losing the ability to commit such atrocities? If the sum of why this movie was effective was that Kubrick was able to manipulate us into caring for this charater he failed to sway me. Is Art and Estheticsl really all there is to it? I'd love to hear opinions different than my own shooting down my dislike for the film as I would really like to understand the greatness of this film.

As an allegory about how far people will go to be 'right', the movie works for me. But other than that, it's beyond being sensible.

American Psycho is definitely very similar to Notes from Underground in its themes, nihilism, and darkness. The book is a lot better in my book (no pun intended), although I do like the movie a lot. But the book was seriously haunting, and also just INCREDIBLY disturbing. That violence, my lord.

I taught at a college where we had a pastor who would show this film and use it to teach moral lessons about justice and our culture. I think he might be watching this one day.

Real life feels like a movie to me. Everyone seems to be playing a part instead of just being themselves. Even when Truman enters the real world, do the people accept him only because he was on TV, or ignore him because he’s not famous anymore. So even the “real” world won’t be much different for him

"The lord works in mysterious ways." Side note: Sodom and Gomorrah was a biblical story from the new testament about two cities that were destroyed by god because too many of the people were being unethical and sinful. It's possible that John genuinely believed in his righteousness and that he was trying to get rid of bad people before the city tore itself apart. Hell, he could have been a twisted god who incarnated himself as a human to test humanity the way it was today. In any case, even though we don't know much about what happens after the end, I'm sure people like Somerset will never stop fighting for this world we live in. God bless, great movie.

@JaredBauer: being a Fountain Pen enthusiast, I have to correct you referencing his pen as a Dip Pen (4:01). It is a piston filled fountain pen. In this scene he takes the pen out and removes the cap. Then he flips it and removes the end-cap to expose a plunger. He presses it down and then dips the pen in the bottle, and lets go of the plunger to fill the pen with ink, similar to a syringe. The ink enters the nib and fills the pen bladder inside the barrel.

Hmmmm - the ‘local people worshipping the white guy as a god’ trope makes pretty uncomfortable watching these days…

Look, it's easy to get caught up in the idea of changing the world with science and logic. But let’s be honest - people don’t always work that way. Symbols and slow reforms? Yeah, that’s probably more realistic. We’re all stumbling along, trying to figure it out, and pretending there’s some grand solution only sets you up for disappointment. You can aim for perfection, but don’t forget to enjoy the messy reality of it all while you’re at it. Keep it up!

Idiocracy is how the rest of the world has viewed the US since at least the 90s. The film was already true of circumstances when it was made, just exaggerated.

Amen on the Kubrick analysis. Men of violence from contrasting societies of violence and ideals and I see Kurtz's rein as a terrifying example of what the two would look like if they merged and tried to achieve peace.

They made seeking healthcare fearful for everyone. Unnecessary prescriptions, surgeries etc. instead of keeping a clean bill of health with regular affordable healthcare. The word affordable being attached to healthcare is disgusting too as it should be free.

Christopher Nolan's take on Batman isn't a new innovation unless you mean removing the gothic and noir themes. His first two movies are based on the comics Year One and Long Halloween, and Bruce's character motivations are the same as in Batman Forever. The Joker's philosophy is already defeated in The Dark Knight Rises. And it anything, I'd say Nolan's take is even more damning today. Societal frustrations are redirected when attempts to address legitimate concerns are thwarted.

It was never established in the movie that the Bordens were twins, that always left me a bit puzzled and thinking that he had simply used the Tesla machine. And if that's the case, then that would've made the reveal of the diary being fake meaningless.

Everyone misses this in World War II, cream was rationed, and so people used whipped pork guard as a topping. Obviously someone who is Jewish would find that repulsive and yet Shoshana could not show her discussed or her cover would be blown.

“Think for yourself” is a general truism that sounds like a good idea, but what if thinking for yourself without understanding the problem or being aware of the science/theory or all the facts? A huge problem in today’s idiocracy in the real world is that people believe they are “thinking for themselves” by discrediting real scientific establishments and research papers and instead following quacks such as vaccine skeptics or the one in 99 climate scientists who claims to reject climate change. The information pool is contaminated with hucksters and charlatans, and the people “thinking for themselves” are so educationally destitute that they lack the ability to sort the bullshitters like Alex Jones from people who know what they’re talking about. Often even very intelligent or highly educated people can still have blind spots and believe incredibly stupid beliefs in other subjects despite their expertise in one particular realm.

WTF is it with all these so-called video essayists always invariably becoming cliched, bogus anti-capitalism rants. This video’s not as bad as some others out there, but still. Anybody who thinks the solution to life’s problems is a Che Guerrera t-shirt is blind to the obvious ability of capitalism to lift societies up and lacks a more nuanced thesis that can call out specific problematic policies, rather than throwing the ideological baby out with the bathwater. Old enough to have watched this in the cinema when it came out. The one thing that always struck me about this unnamed city, was the parallels with Gotham City - a decaying city thats rife with corruption. This and Fight Club cemented Fincher as a cult 90s director.
