I am glad you decided to start your own channel. Wisecrack isn't the same without you.
Wisecrack is fine without him. That said, he is missed
@@simstander5471 yes it's fine. It just... isn't the same.
Nah. Wisecrack lost their groove after Jared left.
@@simstander5471 Nah... wisecrack used to be actual nuance and philosophy. Now its yet another trench of the culture war. It's fine by your measure because it affirms your side of said war
@@remus4283 Nah dude, Wisecrack is the same. They still analyse pop culture subjects and draw out some sort of philosophical meaning. They still use big words and reference philosophers that most people haven't heard of. Still the same despite the change in host.
I have trouble not involving myself and I realized i'm simply addicted to social media. I deleted my apps. Sometimes I find myself having the urge to download them again or visit the sites on my laptop! It gets better as time goes on and now I find myself actually having focus to watch a movie in one sitting. It's nice. Things around me in physical world look and better.
I must say this is the video I needed to watch. I very very rarely comment on videos but this was the tonic my brain needed. I am what most people would call a liberal but I find it incredibly tiring listening to people who hold intractable views of any kind. I sometimes feel like should draw my line in the sand and start digging my trench like all these other people but something stops me. Your video eloquently described why I struggle to go full bore with any opinion of mine. I feel like the vast majority of people are like this. They simply want to live their lives and would rather not engage.
I literally found myself going down a deep rabbit hole last night for the first time in a long while. I really needed this wake-up slap to keep myself in check. thanks Jared!
just out of curiosity, what was the rabbit hole about?

I will say that there are two kinds of 'centrist'.
The first is as you're portraying. Where you spend time digesting information and thinking critically sbout everything.
The second is when you simply go "I should be in the middle of these two extremes, as that is sensible". This type is what many folks criticise.
I've always called it "active" vs. "passive" centrism. An active centrist is usually a skeptic (epistemologically). Whereas a passive centrist, ironically, often affirms his or her position much more confidently with far less intellectual rigor or genuine investigation.
@@flyingphoenix113 Exactly. I can firmly state that politically I'm on the left, but I absolutely hate trying to talk in leftist circles. I do not like the fact that both the right and the left staple on a bunch of 'accept this or you are the enemy' baggage. Being able to think out each issue is very important.
The problem is trying to make anything a polarity without recognizing the context within which it exists.
Adding up a lot of things and taking the average in some sense, and saying you're in the middle, is totally different than being in the middle of all things.
Critical thinkers can have very polarized opinions, they just consider the other side as well.
Being in the middle isn't a virtue, it's just a way to start a conversation with someone who disagrees
@@MattAngiono Agreed. The issue I have with this train of thinking is effectively the constant pull in one direction for the sake of compromise.
Ex. We should have the death penalty vs not.
"Well both sides are right, so we should have just a couple death penalty offenses. Compromise between two extremes."
5 years later:
"Well we should expand death penalty offenses a bit" or "We should leave things as a compromise."
@@flyingphoenix113 I like this definition. Lately I've been calling myself an engaged normie.
A meek and mild defense of the passive centrist is that in a democratic system some level of compromise and meeting in the middle is necessary, regardless if its the best solution or not.
I’ve never read the book or heard of Zeticism, but your description of it most closely aligns with the approach I’ve long had when digesting social media and news.
I’ve definitely noticed the algorithm trying to turn my feed into an echo chamber. Every other short or suggestion I got was just enforcing opinions I already had, but it got so prevalent that my feed nearly turned into an endless stream of curated clips from pseudo intellectual podcasters “dunking” on their guests-who usually embarrassingly lack the education required to engage in truly thought provoking conversations. It’s nothing but theater; it’s setting pins up and knocking them down. Over and over again, with not a chance of getting my own beliefs and opinions put to the challenge. I feel lucky to have noticed it, but I find it more than a little unsettling to know that there are countless people who will blindly dive into their echo chambers without a single thought of self reflection.
Social media is seriously the most insidious enabler there is.
Young people need to see videos like this. They've been bombarded by the "culture wars" and political agenda so much, it's about time that adults started taking them seriously and talking to them about all this crap.
I’m dealing with the exact opposite at the moment, I’m the young one and stay out of the culture war (I lean liberal/progressive on social issues but I generally stay out of the culture war and oppose the more radical ends of it). While my dad stays out of it, my mom and grandparents are involved in it
"Staying up to date with politics feels like developing a mental illness than being informed."
Yep you hit the nail on the head. Yesterday I nearly had a breakdown because of political content. I'm just not going to interact with it anymore and focus on what makes me happy.
don't focus on what makes you happy, that's part of the problem... focus on what gives you purpose (happiness would be a consequence of that).
It saddens me how humility and forgiveness are some of the key concepts of Christian ethics, yet my fellow Christians are so quick to abandon these values in the culture war.
Just because someone says they "are" something doesn't mean that's what they actually are.
preach.
Oh god the religious guy.
More people have been murdered in the name of decency, goodness and god than satan. Don't forget that. What hasn't worked for people for 1000s of years won't work for us now, what's so hard to understand about this...? Religion doesn't operate in the people's lives, neither is it in support of sanity and honesty. It's very simple
One of the reasons I had to distance myself from those things it was really making me sick and crazy with anxiety
You've literally just described my entire mode of being that I arrived at very naturally growing up. People always praise my thinking but I've never really understood why people think it's special and why they don't just default to it naturally as it's seemingly the only style of thought that is actually tangibly beneficial. I'll definitely look into this.
A lot of people never have the idea that they could be wrong actually cross their mind... most people in fact
@@MattAngiono Yeah, I've always just struggled with accepting that because of how stupid it is
I guarantee you people don't always praise your thinking 😂
@@AnneALias This isn't something I infer, they tell me point blank. It's not a flex, I don't like it. Feels like praise for nothing.
Beautifully put, I think it's a good way to go about things. I will try to apply it to my life.
"Some people have no idea what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." .... George Carlin
I wish I could send this back to my 2016 self
Hi Jared, as always, great content! However, this concept brought up by you about metamodernism seems to actually be the old epistemological humility that has been with us since Socrates. For a long time, they've been saying that everything in philosophy has already been said, and I increasingly feel that this is true... you know how it goes: new clothes for old ideas. Nevertheless, I'm glad to see you striving to move away from simplistic dichotomies of the culture war. Perhaps a complementary approach could be our own stance towards social media technologies. In that sense, I recommend the works on digital minimalism by Cal Newport. Best regards!
Surgical! I feel so overwhelmed by everything, and watching these "guilty pleasures" is one way of relief. I know everything is a spectacle, I know its just my biasis being confirmed.
God, the old wisecrack videos are so your style, that I cant watch the newer ones anymore. Thank you for not disappearing completly!
My child was born in 2017 so I simply missed out on all the peak of Trump drama by not being online. I remember logging in after new years 2018 and everyone was saying how horrible 2017 was for them. My grass touching streak was ruined by lockdown, but before that man, I was doing great.
It might not be easy for you, but it is a simple solution, just be online less.
That is a very narrow viewpoint. I think you might have 'noticed trump drama' if it had affected you on a personal level. I have skin in this game and it's going to take a lot more then ' touching grass" to make my trans disabled queer self safe in the USA
@@mitcharendt2253 well that's the thing I'm not American so it was rather ridiculous for my peers in my country to get so upset over him when they didn't get half as upset at our own politicians who are doing damage to their personal lives.
But also, what do you have to show for being angry online for the past 8 years? Haven't you lost rights lately? He's also running again by the sounds of it... You can call me narrowminded but you haven't changed strategy and keep losing.
As someone who is dealing with the misfortune of several loved ones becoming hyper-conservatives who are heavily involved in the culture war and overuse so many terms and/or don’t know what they mean, thank you (I tend to lean liberal/progressive on social issues while opposing more extreme aspects of it, but I stay out of the culture war). It just pisses me off how it got ahold of those I love
That’s not to say I have dealt with genuinely “woke” types because I certainly have (though my “woke” criteria is significantly stricter than that of most others I hear irl), and they combined with bad influences taking advantage of the situation actually caused me to be some hyper-conservative culture war nut for a part of last year and I regret it
In addition I’m bisexual but am distant from the community (I’d say since 2020) though I also can’t stand those people who talk loudly about “(traditional) family values”
I’ve seen it all, been there, done that, regretted it, and came out a better person. Things will get worse especially with an election coming up, but this video served as help as I am slowly going insane due to the culture war being so influential irl (and had since come close to having several breakdowns from culture war stuff and dogmatism and toxicity in general). Once again thank you. I would go in depth about my points but don’t want to write a 5 page essay about this. Lol
Edit: and it has gotten worse. And worse. And it will only get worse until at least 2025, but most likely until later than that. But I keep coming back to this video as it is helpful and provides a sliver of hope
(That said though I do disagree with you on the part about tech execs to a sizable degree but otherwise good video)
About refusing to take position, they will burn you on the stake for that. 😂😂😂
Usually from the left as they are coming from the side that challenges conventional and established beliefs.
They claim that not taking a position is taking the position.
0:49 this was the best choice ti make while doom scrolling all day on 3 different platforms. Thank you! The irony of this exchange is that you made this video about a year ago.
I’m just simply tired of all this. I whine internally whenever I see “Oh boy! Here’s more political nonsense and biases to further segregate all of us for the sake of stroking someone’s ego AGAIN!” I know it’s pointless, and I just can’t take it anymore. That’s why I’m choosing to write the stories I want to write to fight back against this insanity.

10:44 and that is one of the reasons i think the meme *"I have no enemies."* from Viland saga got so popular.
Reminds me of Robert Anton Wilson's radical ontologocal agnosticism. Vigorous skepticism about one's own, and others, B.S. ... Belief Systems.
This stop process is exactly what ended my personal existential crisis. The way I reason to it was as such I was freaking out about eventual heat death of the universe and that nothing was going to escape it so there was no point in actually going much further than we where we were. Then I was taking a shower 1 day and I had to thought that you know we don't know everything yet so why would I base what I'm gonna do with my life on an incomplete assumption? True is it mostly correct could be we don't know we haven't observed everything yet we don't know hardly anything yet we're taking really really advanced guesses with math. At once I realized that's what we were doing it made me free I was able to have a relationship with information knowledge and wisdom knowing that each category changes and is in flux every day as the mind grows and continues to Digest the world around it.

Yeah, I think coming to a moral position definitely takes a certain amount of discipline and intellectual tegridy that the individual has lost in the modern day. Fantastic video, Jared!
I thought you were going to do the "Enlightened Centrist™" thing, but I can't deny you made some good point and I'll fold this into my understanding so keeping up with the state of the world doesn't harsh my vibe so much.
I do think, by the standards outlined in this video, one might benefit from examining why they might be called out for trying "both sides" an argument or stance instead of dismissing it with the notion that haters are gonna hate.

You are nether left or right (i think) you're hero
I think we blame too much on algorithms, you curate your own algorithm. The algorithm is just doing what it’s meant to do, show you more stuff you like or interact with. If you only seek out one type of content, that’s on you. You can easily break the algorithm too, by just seeking out the other side or interacting with it, but that takes curiosity. Coincidentally this is why it’s funny when people talk about doing their research, people just google their point of view and grab first study that confirms it. Classes should be taught on this and hopefully people realize it’s more about them and their habits, then evil tech company. If you find yourself in arguments online often, it’s helpful to think “what will I get out of this,” usually it’s nothing but competition.
It's true that habits are at play here, but many people also downplay the addictive mechanisms behind these algorithms, especially on younger people who have not developed the kind of responsible habits that would keep algorithmic influence at bay.
There is a book called 'Stolen Focus' by Johann Harri that has several chapters going into detail about the addictive mechanisms built into social media, from interviews with people involved in designing them. At Stanford University there is a place called the Persuasive Technologies Lab, where students learn how to design technology that could influence ones behaviour without realizing. Largely the study was based off of psychological study by B.F Skinner, who found that animals could have their behaviour changed by means of 'reinforcement'; that is, certain rewards for certain behaviours.
Social media companies, in order to make money, require 'engagement', engagement is the total time spent using social media and interacting with content. To increase engagement, various reinforcements are provided, such as likes and hearts, when you post; generally a pleasurable feeling that your 'numbers' are rising. The same rush people get when they pull a
Content posted is also a reinforcement; it is not simply that you are reccommended content you are likely to engage with, as well as the endless choice, and slot-machine like sense of possibility that 'this next video will be a great one'-- but the likelihood that you will consume said content is also engineered to be as frictionless as possible; letting you preview the video, putting other videos on autoplay, suggesting the same video insistently, such that eventually curiosity gets the better of you and you click;-- not to mention ways of mitigating this are rather non-obvious; many people are actually quite social media illiterate, when it comes to fine-tuning their reccomendations; I had to tell my friends about the three dots at the side of the video that you can use if you want a channel to stop being reccomended.
TIL I'm zetetic.
And here I just thought I appreciated that most knowledge is provisional.
I miss you in wisecrack, that channel isn't the same. Thanks to the algorithm I saw this video😂 kek
I feel like there's still an issue for those who have supposedly transcended the culture wars with their metamodern zeticism or whatever. A big part of what drew me into all of this was the desire to understand the world, society, people, and orientate towards how I can live my life to better the project of humanity, but everything is just so staggeringly complex, and I have what I think of as a totally niche perspective that no-one cares to understand or appreciate. Plus, I could definitely be a better person to the people in my life, but I'm depressed, disconnected, and "living my values" requires more than I have in the tank on any given day and it all just feels pointless given that there is little in the way of a hint of the path towards doing anything other than pissing in the wind.
If you're pissing in the wind, you're not shtin in the well.
May the winds favour you and your piss.

If you take the term 'culture war' seriously and don't just see it as the continued enlightenment of society being antagonized by people who have a stake in old modes of being, you're missing the point.
yeah
I wouldn't be so high and mighty if I were you. Many people who claim to be on the side of the enlightened are well in on the antagonism. They refuse to call it the 'culture war' but are charging on the front lines regardless.

I am thankful for channels like yours, Jared, but seeing the current state of the world, it's hard to see how we can peacefully coexist in society when moral foundation is being taken apart piece by piece. @@shanihandel9621 Maybe I’m dumb, could ya spell it out for me?
@@evieeevee I don't want to because he didn't want to (I assume or he would have said it), but let's just say that there is the idea on "the left" (or liberals) that whatever a member of a marginalized community says about themselves has to automatically be considered true because of their "lived experience". An example would be if a gay person said that they were "born this way", and straight people had to agree based on that person's perspective that homosexuality is innate. I've seen huge wars over "born this way" vs. "this is my choice, and I'm damn proud of it!" With sexuality, this was someone of an open discussion, a tense discussion, but one wasn't automatically "wrong" for having one or the other opinion, and neither was equated with bigotry. With other, newer categories of identity, that's no longer possible.
Amen.
This was great
Bro, you're a genius
Can you possibly make a video on how to defend yourself in the face of "both siderism" when you're attempting to discuss the nuances of the numerous pop culture political stances floating around?
People will literally call me a Tom, a notsee, a communist, etc when I try to bring up the idea that maybe it's not a good thing to act like political extremes sports teams, and that the best course of action is to pick a "side" and defend it to the grave without ever investigating the ideas that you're parroting except for facts that validate your conclusion
It's a simple process but not an easy one. You need to work out your fundamental values, ideally without the guidance of religion as it'll guarantee they're your own beliefs. Everything else can then come down to evidence and causality.
Finally some wise words

This is a “solution” for the privileged that don’t have a stake in the “culture wars”. Some people don’t form opinions based on the social media content they consume, it’s simply their lived reality. Empathizing with those that promote and advocate for your oppression when you’re living as the oppressed isn’t realistic and isn’t a matter of opinion or truth seeking.
Thank you. This is such a privileged take it's painful. These videos are mostly intellectual exercises for him because his actual existence isn't under threat like a lot of marginalized people under what he's deeming simply "culture wars" like it's a social media trend. 🙄
Yeah, you're either for the existence and liberation of all people or you aren't and it really is that simple.
I dont know honestly, he basically just advocated for a healthy sceptisism of ones own opinions. I'm a full blown leftist and I dont need to agree with somebody who might share some believes I see as total BS. But I think especially if youre coming from the left, it's always important to question your own methods and yes also your own biases/opinions and also be open to critisism. Because in the end you need to convince other people with your arguments.
@@FinianFhomhair being systematically marginalized/oppressed has nothing to do with where you fall on the political spectrum. Just a matter of justice. Anyone trying to limit my freedoms/rights/threaten my well being does not deserve any empathy from my end and there’s nothing about that that I need to be skeptical about.
@@studentoftheearth4623 thats fine, if you feel that way, I get it. The problem is that the other guy propably thinks the exact same thing to. And I know that its hard to empathize with a lot of people who have absolutely contrary opinions or worse, are a threat to your live and Im surely not going to ask anybody, to do that. But you can still choose the strategy you want to support and I think the most successfull strategy for those who have the most interesst in keeping the status quo is, plotting one marginalized group against another even more marginalized group. And as long as they are successfull in doing that either nothing will change, (or more likely) things will get even way more worse for the smaller one of both groups.

@@drtfx7 As long as you're aware of it. Knowing yourself is half the battle.
you probably don't think there's an alt-left pipeline because the Overton Window currently favors the left. "You need to say 'All genders' instead of 'Both sexes' when addressing people at this company you work for"
"I would prefer not to."
That's gonna end well
That's not what the point of that was though. The video was about indecision. Your framing is inherently binary where you're obliged to either comply or deny a political decision, albeit a minor one.
@@Crispman_777 my point is that sometimes you will be called to make a binary decision: this isn't just internet videos, if you work in a company (like most people do) and you get a memo that tells you how you should speak or how somebody wants you to speak replying with "I would prefer not to" will not be a neutral answer and there is no neutral answer to give: do you comply or not? Those are the choices. This isn't hypotethical btw, you could call this "lived experience"
@@matteofurlotti6211 Yeah, sure. I just don't think the video was talking about outright coercion is all
@@Crispman_777 and that's why I left a comment about it: talking about this like it only happens on the internet and you can just not worry about it is missing the fact that in real life you might have to face this eventually and when that happens "I would prefer not to" won't do you any good if that's all you have
Honestly, to that point of lived experience, you have to navigate it with your own ideas. Don't literally use the phrase "I'd prefer not to". That's just co-opting a phrase said to demonstrate a position you (can) take. How you use it with your own language and experience is more of the point.
This was great, good faith truth seeking ftw!!

I'm trans and I find it diminishing and dismissive to call our oppression culture war
Exactly! This is not an abstract issue for us or some aesthetic search for meeting. It's South Park tier "both sides are ridiculous" false equivocation and centrism
I became a socialist, which got me involved in my actual community, and now I avoid all social media except TH-cam... As an anti-centrist, I am concerned about this talk about "tolerating the other's position".
you don't necessarily have to tolerate, but try to understand where they're coming from-- and that doesn't mean 'understand where they're coming from' by hearing someone on your side badly explain their beliefs to you, but rather, try and hear them out directly and read some of their favoured literature.
I definitely prefer not to with culture war shit most of the time lately.
