Since Wisecrack, I had always disagree with Ryan, but the chemistry between you two and your different styles combine perfect. Really liked the video, great work as always Jared
Im so here for these kinds of videos - I even would say theres something charming about glimpsing the production process. But I cant help but feel the early conversation of how this should work could have been done before recording.... I mean Im knitpicking saying this, but like you might have been able to have two tier lists that way - just sayin
I would say a positive quality about Jake Lomata from Raging Bull would be his grit and determination, also the film I would say isn't really meant to sympathize with Lomata but more so for the supporting cast like his brother or wife. In this regard I believe its like There Will be Blood, a protagonist who is utterly devious but who's determination is grand to watch as he plows through more moral side characters.\
I only watched The Age Of Innocence for the first time last year and watched it a few times since. I was surprised how great it was i think its top tier Scorcese, top 5 for ne.
Shutter Island has a hidden layer which I think ya both missed :) With the ending they leave open the possibility (and they even allude to it throughout the film) that the main character is NOT crazy and has been taken to a concentration camp
Its funny you guys enjoyed the Aviator so much - I should have given it more of a chance because when I was a kid I couldnt pay attention to even a second. But as Ryan goes on to say, yeah Howard Hughes is kind of a big deal. I may have to do my own retrospective
I get that as a kid you might not like it. I always blew it off because I felt like a big Hollywood biopic was an odd choice for Scorsese. I'd give it a rewatch, it's got the same maximalist chaotic energy as Wolf of Wallstreet. I'd rank those two close, and better than his other diCaprio films.
guys all u had 2 do was use some built in cpu annotate feature to draw Ryan’s name on the screen in rlly bad handwriting at the bottom/top (anywhere there’s space) & write “A” or “B” when he disagreed with a ranking & then draw a shitty arrow to what movie it was. Then we all win
To me, that's a solid ranking, except for 2 or 3 movies : Raging Bull is too low, it should probably be S, or at least A. Cape Fear is probably a bit too high, a B or a C seems more suitable for it. Taxi Driver should at least be in A, if you consider its cultural impact. And finally, Bringing out the Dead is an underrated masterpiece and deserves a solid A. (by the way, unless you did it on purpose, you mispelled Scorsese's name for the title of the video, it's Scorsese, not Scorcese) Additionnaly, as you mentionned, even C or D tier Scorsese's films are really, really good. I believe Coppola is right when he says Scorsese is the world's greatest living filmmaker Great video guys, thanks!
Ryan’s list: Mean Streets *B,* Who’s that knocking at my door *B,* Alice Doesn’t live here anymore *B,* Raging Bulls *B,* King of Comedy *S,* After Hours *C,* The last temptation of Christ *A,* Goodfellas *S,* Age of Innocence *D,* Casino *A+,* The Aviator *A,* The Departed *S,* Shutter Island *C,* Wolf of Wall Street *S,*
Another aspect to view Raging Bull from is as a story about Masculinity at its very extreme and Jake is the ultimate personification of toxic masculinity to the point he throws away everything to prove in his own mind he's a man (or what a man by that period meant)
I feel the exact opposite about Casino. I just really like that 90's period, and those movies remind me a lot of de Palma. I don't like Goodfellas at all, it's my least favorite Scorsese film. I feel the same way about it as you do for Raging Bull. To me, I can't connect to the guy at all and I don't have any motivation to care. Going back to de Palma, GF and Scarface are supposed to be the essential gangster movies. Scarface is a comic book movie, GF is just some boring generic mob guy.
I don't usually comment on this but you should go to movie jail for giving Raging bull a B. Especially for the reasons you did. It's an exploration of a conolex and angry character, it doesn't need to have something cool or relatable to make him interesting.
These guys should host a podcast.
Imagine if they had a third guy.. maybe with a name like Austin?
I would definitely listen to a podcast with these two and a third guy talk about the meaning of movies.
Again

Not watched all of his, but Silence is my favorite by far. Age of Innocence is great too, both very underrated
Silence and Age of Innocence deserve more praise, IMHO
Perfect timing as I just watched the GQ video of Scorsese breaking down his best films! Always appreciate both of your cinematic insights!
My favorite content creators. I love this OG Wisecrack and Funhaus connection. Been a fan of both channels for almost a decade.
Crazy hearing Ryan's voice on podcasts for like 5 years and just now seeing what he actually looks like
Silence is so underrated

I think all the issues you both had with Raging Bull are you problems, not the movie.

Love these lists with Jared
I love you both, but Infernal Affairs (having watched it on the big screen) is ALL the reason The Departed is any good. Peace.
Someone had to say it

Omg hahaha that show me... Feels like Ego from ratatouille 😂
Godfellas and Taxi Driver are top 10 of all times... They are more than class S...they are amazing piece of human artistic achviement
Are you and Ryan going to do a Rick and Morty review of the new episodes as they come out for the new season? Would love to see that

Ranking the movies themselves may be difficult, but ranking the score's easy.
Always a fun time, guys. And Ryan, get a real last name why don’t ya!

Correction: In the title it says "Scorcese" instead of "Scorsese".
Good lookin out!
Jared lives in Helsinki?!
I will have to watch this later, but I needed to get the 👍 in ASAP

Wow The Irishman is his best in my opinion
