Thank you, Jared. I appreciate everything you have done. I have been watching both you and wisecrack's videos for years. And it's helped me learn more about life.
I agree. every time I feel every sides are becoming too vitriolic or incomprehensibly angry, I always go to this channel to get a sense of the wider point
Can you make lists of the books and essays you read when researching topics for your videos and put them in the video descriptions? That would be awesome.
the best kind of clickbait title where one forgets why one clicked in the first place for a fascinating video essay. who started the culture war? or rather what isnt it?
0:23 This clip is edited deceptively. Katt was in the middle of saying that Faizon told HIM that "getting a Netflix special is easy....". Just like a lot of people miss, is that everything he was talking about, was said about him, or something he was directly involved with, first. Took me awhile to put it all together .
I haven't heard as relevant and insightful discussion about Marshall McLuhan's work since I left art school. In Canada. Love your work Jared, thanks for being the smartest person on youtube.
It’s an interesting topic. As a Gen x person I sometimes don’t understand social media. Yes the technical part but the idea that everyone just lives to create content for the platforms for (mostly) free. And everyone seems to be selling something- either a product or services or themselves as a person that’s X, Y Z like trying to be an influencer. Looking like a traveler or adventurous person or a foodie and so on. And all to just get more followers. So listening to this video was insightful, the platforms changes the art and socialety.
Dope video as always Jared! I actually like The Curse ending the bc on a meta level Nathan spent so much time in the reality tv world “helping” small businesses (like Asher) and the moment he tries to create a real piece of art and make a substantive change (Asher becoming a father) he drifts into obscurity on showtime (like drifting into space) and the few people that pay attention (the bystanders) are left confused
Hey Jared, big fan of yours talking here. Have you seen the latest Rick and Morty season, now that Justin Roiland has left the show? I feel this season was not bad at all and has interesting commentaries on capitalism (e.g. episode 4). Hope we can hear your take on it.
I was right in the Middle of it when it hit the tipping point real time with Twitter (Facebook too but way different) … I literally have the hard drives with the changes, people I know in real life and other around the world “changed” and pretended like they have always thought, behaved and lived like whatever folk made up yesterday. They didn’t realize I was doing research at the time and was using the Giant master dictionaries, none of these words are in them, but they pretended like these words that people just made up the other day have always been in the dictionary! One year later, the smallest versions of the Dictionaries had all of these words out of nowhere! Lmao 1984
The internet was a golden place back when we didn't have social media and normies. Honestly normal everyday people shouldn't have access to so much information. The internet is not for dumbos
Oh my gosh I have that book in my basement and I alway knew to read it but put it off. New day I will buy a PDF or get the audio book and start reading it today! Thank you! Edit The Power of a Library Card! I just borrowed the Audio book and will finish it by Pres day! Great Content Sir
I probably can’t put into words how much I get from your videos, you are a true breath of fresh air on this platform, if it were up to me, your videos would be mandatory viewing.
Thanks, Jared. For me, I didn’t really quite understand all the things Katt was saying as I listened to the entire thing. But he won my heart. I think he just did it to for the interest. He knew how to be a star. the dude’s a star. I think half the people knew that he was going to throw them under the bus just for fun and because they all get attention. so now let’s see what you say …. 🎉
Not seen this video yet. But in my experience the culture war started when the trailer for Mad Max Fury Road came out people (mainly on the right) started complaining because there were several women in the movie. Saying they were making Max a side character in his own movie. Also when the trailer when The Force Awakens came out people were mad the John Boyega was playing a stormtroopers because I'm sure I don't need to say because.
This is very interesting. I've actually learned something new about the so-called culture war. Also, Monty Python is a lot more clever than is first apparent.
Fuck yeah, Jared! This is where you've been hiding out? Been missing you over at Wisecrack. Instant like and subscribe. Would love to see you do a "philosophy of" The Curse. Keen to see your take on the ending.
This was very good. I don't really have much to say other than, as an older "millenial", it's very easy to see what you're talking about as needed discourse on a larger stage. The moment I became permanently depressed about everything, was the exact moment I realized that more people hate education that cherish it. EDIT: I should be clear that when I say "hate education", it's more about that initial, human reaction to learning something that challenges your world views completely. Obviously it sounds very, clearly "culture war"ish-y? but what can you do? As far as I know, people love the idea of education without any of work that has to be done. And when they're challenged on it, they "fight back".
Keep doing what you do Jared! Seeing the world through the lens of history, culture and philosophy is a lot of work and we appreciate that you're here as an objective voice of sanity.
Not sure how to bring this up without doing it on an unrelated video but… I’m wondering your thoughts on Poor Things. Count my vote on that topic 🙋🏻♂️
Jared - I am a long time fan and I appreciate your work. One thing I still do not understand, however, is your hair. Please explain your copper mane. I am hair-challenged and your hair drives me to near Trumpian levels of confusion. Thank you sir.
There is definitely something to be said about people wanting to validate their beliefs about the narrative of themselves by way of shouting it out in a megaphone for everyone around them to hear. As stated in the video, this comes off as highly desperate and entirely performative, as well as opening one's self to having their identity being attacked or criticized. In my opinion, social media, this specific medium that this video focuses on, is not the place to form or validate one's self or image. If one is attempting to know themselves then it may be best to do so by way of forging one's self, instead. The best way to solidify your beliefs about yourself is through action, not performance; Beliefs are forged through hammer, fire, and anvil. Not with cameras and scripts. Although, there is something to be said about faking it until you make it, so, whatever works for you, good luck out there.
Mmm, most philosophy and spirituality claims the exact opposite. Letting go of who you think you are or should be is the best way to figure out who or what you really are, and the idea behind forcing it leads to cognitive dissonance, OCD, depression, etc.
Can someone explain to me the title and the first 2 minutes of the video? Everything after that I think it was brilliantly exposed by Jared, but since I'm not American and I don't know who are all those people mentioned in the beginning, I have not clue what this Katt Williams did and how it was relevant to the rest of the history
Yeah, I felt exactly the same. I mean, I know who Katt Williams is, but have no idea what he said in that interview and thus had no context whatsoever for what this guy was saying.
kat didnt tell us anything we didnt already know like 8 years ago, he didnt break anything. maybe he got a few more people interested in the subject but do we really want to bring more katt williams fans into discussion about politics?
@@secularmonk5176 Maybe you shouldn't take *comments* on *TH-cam* so seriously, rather than use them as an excuse to exhibit your anti-social tendencies?
The culture war started a long, long time ago. It depends on when you want to start counting. With the formation of the John birch society. With the Puritans arriving in New England. With Christopher Columbus, landing in the Haitian coast, and thinking he was in India. But in all cases, this is one culture attempting to illuminate and replace all other cultures. They like to refer to themselves as western civilization acknowledging that there is civilization in the east. They do not acknowledge anyone else is having a civilization.
I've always preferred the term outrage economy to culture war.
100% agree with this
Too many people and organisations make money off it now for it to stop.
outrage economy is the people who see the culture war and fan the flames to make money, thats how I see it
Godd that was insightful
That's a good term. I think ill use it to.

Jared, this video reflects wisecrack at its apex. I forgot how good your essays were!
I was feeling the exact same thing. This is why I used to watch Wisecrack so much and why I don't watch it so much anymore. Jared.
Yeah, Wisecrack is dead, I think Michael killed it.
Hear hear
Hear hear
@@thomaslyons441 nahh Michael did not kill it. It’s still great, but everyone’s over Rick and Morty.
Ho ho, a political debate via smoke signals is literally a heated debate 😂😅
The collective consciousness is going insane.
Never in history has it been sane to be honest.
Thank you, Jared. I appreciate everything you have done. I have been watching both you and wisecrack's videos for years. And it's helped me learn more about life.
I love your videos man. I feel like you are one of the most sane and sincere voices on here. Keep up the good work my dude!

Boom
Once again, a banger of a TH-cam analysis by Jared. Expected nothing less. ❤🙏🏻
Very nice analysis, Jared! I'll be sharing this with everyone :)
Wow. This was the content I didn’t know I needed. Dude you went deeeeeeep. And I’m here for it. Subscribed.
amazing analysis Jared absolutely very thoughtfully stimulating
Certainly one of your most insightful essay yet

One of the best explanations of the medium is the message
I was right in the Middle of it when it hit the tipping point real time with Twitter (Facebook too but way different) … I literally have the hard drives with the changes, people I know in real life and other around the world “changed” and pretended like they have always thought, behaved and lived like whatever folk made up yesterday.
