    Beautiful combination of science, music and art. It makes astronomy accessible, without sacrificing any rigor. Recommended for students and professionals of any age.

    The sky at night --------------------- The sky at night, a canvas deep, A moonlight bathes the world in grace. With stars above, their secrets keep, In this serene and quiet space. A silvery orb, in the expanse, The night is calm, the world's asleep. Its tranquil glow, a gentle dance, In slumber's embrace, our dreams we'll reap. The twinkling stars, like diamonds bright, A symphony of silence, vast and wide. Their distant light, a cosmic light, In the stillness of night, we'll confide. The constellations tell stories old, Each star a point in history's chart. A tale of heroes and myths untold, In the tapestry of time, a work of art. The planets in their stately parade, In orbits known, they circle 'round. In the dark abyss, they've boldly played, Their celestial beauty, in awe, we've found. The midnight hour, a world transformed, A tapestry of wonder, vast and grand. In the depths of space, our hearts warmed, As we admire the sky, on this quiet strand.

    Now that I have worked in heavy-ion physics at the CMS experiment at CERN, and have literally straddled the LHC beam pipe installing detector components: one of the main reasons I went into high-energy nuclear physics was because of watching this documentary when I was a kid.

    Very interesting to see the process. I can't believe it's an APO with only a single glass element? Or maybe they didn't show a step where they assembled two or three elements together to make a doublet or triplet APO.

    • @robertsonsid

      At 8:00 you can see it's a doublet. Must be using ED glass. I think they didn't show a step as you suggested.

    I recorded this on VHS the first time it ran on PBS. Much later I bought it on LaserDisc, and eventually on DVD. While a few statements in it have been superseded in the ensuing decades, it is still a magnificent work, as good a short treatise on the subject as one could wish to find.

    Crazy how long it took to figure out the "rings" around galaxies are actually much further and fainter galaxies being distorted by gravitational lensing.
