    I found this video to be both very interesting and informative on a pressing global matter for people from all walks of life. We watched this video in class this week in Astronomy, with my Chemistry and Astronomy teacher. Thanks allot Mr. Cavorley!

    If people knew what they are NOT seeing in the night sky they may actually care about it. That is the problem though, they don't know what they are missing and I so wish people did.

    This is from 11 years ago and what has been done about light pollution over those years? Sadly nothing and it's got worse in that time.

    The City Dark. (1:23)
    More personal kind of documentary rather than scholarly.

    Street lights and car headlights are one thing but there is no need to illuminate the sides of buildings and signs on businesses past 10 PM. Douse those lamps!

    Here's how people can help reduce light pollution: www.darksky.org/get-involved/
    You can also find eco-friendly lighting here: www.darksky.org/our-work/lighting/lighting-for-industry/fsa/
    There are also basic guides for what lighting is best for
    cities and residences, including outdoor lighting: www.darksky.org/our-work/lighting/lighting-for-citizens/lighting-basics/,
    as well as a page for just businesses: www.darksky.org/our-work/lighting/residentialbusiness-lighting/.
    Here is a page on how to identify if your community has a
    lighting ordinance, if it does, how to enforce it, and if it does not, how to
    advocate for it: www.darksky.org/our-work/lighting/public-policy/lighting-ordinances/.
    Here is a way to deal with light trespass and effects by the
    local government: www.darksky.org/our-work/lighting/lighting-for-citizens/bad-streetlights/
    Here are some lighting guidelines and info for policymakers:
    www.darksky.org/our-work/lighting/public-policy/policy-makers/
    And how to help the animals affected: th-cam.com/video/ooLYWwA43SE/w-d-xo.html
    Also a very interesting debunking on why increased street
    lighting doesn't actually decrease crime: www.darksky.org/light-pollution/lighting-crime-and-safety/
    Here's a very interesting page on how much light energy is
    being wasted: www.darksky.org/light-pollution/energy-waste/
    If you're a super sciency person, there's a database for
    scientific research specifically relating to artificial light here: alandb.darksky.org/ There are apps to help combat
    overturned circadian rhythms, meaning you can work at night but still not mess
    up your circadian rhythm: www.darksky.org/light-pollution/human-health/
    Finally, these are places where you can visit near you that
    have good light stewardship (meaning you can actually see the sky): www.darksky.org/our-work/conservation/idsp/
    If for an absurdly tiny possibility someone from the
    government read my comment, this link is how to get certified as a Dark Sky
    place: www.darksky.org/our-work/conservation/idsp/become-a-dark-sky-place/

    It may be air pollution with light pollution that makes it harder to see stars

    • @brendanrussell9405
      @brendanrussell9405 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Air pollution is hardly a factor in the visibility of the sky. The only time air pollution begins to make a difference is in regions of china and some of europe. The main factor is light pollution in which we would need to remove to see clear skys

    • @Muffy703
      @Muffy703 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** True. But it always starts with the individual, and we can control our own homes. My neighbors have lights that would be better shut off at night because it the light trespasses into my windows when I'm trying to sleep

    • @Muffy703
      @Muffy703 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh, trust me - I do. A big issue is the street lights, and my community leaders aren't all the bright.

    • @Muffy703
      @Muffy703 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      True - it's mis-leading that some believe more light = better security ~ It's not necessarily so. Further, one can re-direct the light to where it is needed, while blocking it from entering the atmosphere, and our bedroom windows. So, there's is still light for where light is required. Over lighting and wasted light is often the case

    • @Muffy703
      @Muffy703 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I couldn't agree with you more, Shairaptor. Where I live in Fairfax County, VA the laws have changed to address the issue, but there are private properties, privately owned commercial buildings, condo clusters, town home clusters, and so forth - and all those private entities need to educate themselves and get on board. The county can only do so much. I work with my town home cluster, but the board members are slow on the uptake.

    Would LED lighting produce more visie stars and Milky Way

    • @drakeequation521
      @drakeequation521 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Jenny Marie No. LED lighting is more obscene. Only down lighting should be functioning in our cities. Astronomers don't even care for the use of either our lasers or flashlights. None.

    • @brendanrussell9405
      @brendanrussell9405 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The only light that would help you see stars is a skylight.

    • @KingArcturis
      @KingArcturis 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's silly. LED light is no different than other light- it's the same exact type of energy being transmitted as a light bulb, just a different means of doing it. Down lighting is just a type of fixture, in which you can use any type of light source.

    • @Herzyyyy
      @Herzyyyy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not true. Sodium vapor lights that you commonly see (orange streetlights) emit their light in a narrow range of the spectrum of light. That means you can filter it out because it emits light in a different wavelength then signal from galaxies and nebulae. LED lights, however, are white lights, meaning they cover the ENTIRE spectrum and can't be filtered out.

    what a load of crap, I live under a non light poluted area and I see the stars and doesn't make a difference. is the same for me even I don't look at them!

    • @moussaemad
      @moussaemad 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Simple. You're not an astronomer so you won't notice the difference...pay a little more attention to the night sky and you'll learn to appreciate it and feel sad when stars get immersed in artificial terrestrial lights.

      Here in central Ohio, the light pollution is so bad that you can only see the brightest stars unaided. Forget seeing the Milky Way, it is all washed out. I am 49, grew up in unlit rural Ohio. I miss not seeing nights skies that are all lit up with countless heavenly bodies.

    • @drakeequation521

      +Samyaza Shemyazaz The only non light polluted areas are in North Korea, in Chile's and other countries' high mountains, the polar caps and only a few fringe areas elsewhere, but no place anywhere near cities, street lights airports or tollways or suburbia or even a farm within two hours of those places. There are over 43,000 objects of interest on my database within my mount's software can find and I can find much more with the aid of the right coordinates. Those are only moderate sums compared to more expensive equipment, retailing at higher prices than automobiles.
