    This is what it looks like when a person gets to do exactly what they love to doing. There’s nowhere else he’d rather be, nothing else he’d rather be doing. Awesome intellect.

    Once upon a time the BBC produced ground breaking low budget T.V programmes which inspired a generation of viewers to recognise the wonder of the Universe through the enthusiasm of gentleman amateurs like Patrick Moore, It was a great time to live and learn and I feel grateful to have benefited from living through that time. So homage to Patrick Moore and the Sky at Night which was another reason to be grateful for having been born in Great Britain.

    ahh. Patrick Moore, Jonny Ball, Carl Sagan and James Burke. My teachers as a child in the 70s

    The reason I watched the programme on a Friday afternoon is that I was too young to be staying up late to watch the first showing earlier in the week. The repeat was always shown on a Friday afternoon. I would race home from school, turn the tv on, and hopefully catch the whole repeat programme.

    Why is it 30 seconds of Sir Patrick Moore holds more interest than a whole episode of the modern Sky at Night?

    As a child and teenager in Ireland I watched 'The Sky At Night'. Even in an edition such as this one, it didn't matter that the budget was small, because the wonderfully engaging Patrick Moore was presenting it.

      +Numinous20111 I think it benefits from the small budget. I love how it's all substance and no style.

    Simply the best! Sir Patrick introduced me to astronomy with his "Observer's Guide to Astronomy" in 1964 when I was 12 years old. Years later, majoring in geology at the University of Glasgow when I was the co-editor of our class magazine, 'Outcrop', I wrote to Mr. Moore asking him to write an article on the Moon. Two weeks later I received by post, with astonishment, an article, typed by Mr. Moore himself on his 1908 Woodstock typewriter, on "Transient Lunar Phenomena" or TLPs, quite a fascinating subject at the time (the crew of Apollo 11 reported a TLP). The feature was extremely popular and 'Outcrop" sold near record numbers.
    How many of these requests he must have received, we JUST DON'T KNOW! I'm pretty sure he answered ALL of them!
    Thanks, and God Bless you, Sir Patrick! You will be sorely missed by the general public in the U.K. and amateur and professional astronomers everywhere!

    Finally I've seen one of the few heroes that I've known in this life ... the man who inspired me to become who I am now. Thanks Patrick and rest in piece. You were great.

    I could listen to Patrick Moore for hours and never get bored. He is one of those people whose interest and enthusiasm was infectious 😊
    I think being an eccentric helps too. Quintessentially English.

    I loved this guy from the first time I ever saw him back in the '70s.
    A British institution, a national treasure, up there with the likes of Olivier, Attenborough, and that Richard Burton lad.

    Patrick made me want to learn about astronomy since I was young, with his passion, child like need to understand and share this information with others, but he seemed to be only talking to me personally, so once I had my own child I also got her interested in astronomy. Thanks for the memories !?!?

    "unremarkable planets" :D :D :D and then voyager came along and blew all our minds. such a pity patrick passed away before new horizons got to pluto. it'd made his day to see us explore all 9 of the classic solar systems planets. i well remember sneaking down past midnight to watch "the sky at night" as a child and a fair whack of my love of science and astronomy came from shows like this. thankd alot for putting this up !

    The sky at night
    ---------------------
    The sky at night, a canvas deep,
    A moonlight bathes the world in grace.
    With stars above, their secrets keep,
    In this serene and quiet space.
    A silvery orb, in the expanse,
    The night is calm, the world's asleep.
    Its tranquil glow, a gentle dance,
    In slumber's embrace, our dreams we'll reap.
    The twinkling stars, like diamonds bright,
    A symphony of silence, vast and wide.
    Their distant light, a cosmic light,
    In the stillness of night, we'll confide.
    The constellations tell stories old,
    Each star a point in history's chart.
    A tale of heroes and myths untold,
    In the tapestry of time, a work of art.
    The planets in their stately parade,
    In orbits known, they circle 'round.
    In the dark abyss, they've boldly played,
    Their celestial beauty, in awe, we've found.
    The midnight hour, a world transformed,
    A tapestry of wonder, vast and grand.
    In the depths of space, our hearts warmed,
    As we admire the sky, on this quiet strand.

    Patrick presented two programmes on similar subjects in 1973 and 1975. The first was broadcast on 30 April 1973. The second one posted here I believe was broadcast in late April 1975 just after Uranus had come to opposition. I am certain I watched the second one which would have been shown on BBC1 around 3:30pm on a Friday afternoon. I was 9 years old at the time!

      It is correctly pronounced as " U Rain Us". It is the only planet named after a Greek god Ouranos. Urinous is ruinous and is supposed to save embarrassment.

    I feel like I'm displaying some sort of American cultural ignorance, but why was Patrick averse to the word "billion?" It's always a "thousand million." I love that he does it, but I'm just curious why.

    • @overlordddrp
      @overlordddrp 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because a billion might have meant a million million at this time - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_and_short_scales

    • @dutchcountryman1290
      @dutchcountryman1290 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That could be it. Thanks! Knowing Patrick, though, he probably went on using the long scale even after the PM put his foot down.

    • @overlordddrp
      @overlordddrp 5 ปีที่แล้ว
