Can we STOP a truck getting STUCK. What's the problem with SUTTON BANK?
Sutton Bank on the A170 truck road in North Yorkshire is famous for trucks getting stuck.
Sutton Bank is famous for it's 15th century hillfort, gliding club, cycling, climbing and it a very popular visitor attraction.
The road itself has a 1 in 4 hill (a 25% incline). We look at why HGV's get stuck so regularly!
Whilst driver error is a main factor, the authorities are also far from blameless. There is many things that could be done improving the journey for all drivers.
Caravans are BANNED from using this route due to it's incline but HGV's are not. We discuss the reason why.

What if trucks and cars couldn't get to the port in Holyhead? The Britannia Bridge is the only single carriageway stretch along the whole of the A55. The rest has been upgraded to a dual carriageway over the years. Following a massive fire in 1970 the Britannia railway bridge was rebuilt and in 1980 a road deck was added to it. It's now some 44 years later and the bridge is buckling under the s...
What makes traffic jams worse? Drivers or Traffic Management?

Traffic queues are a nuisance to most drivers, but what causes them at roadworks? Reduced road space is always going to be a contributing factor, but could the way some roadworks are set out be hampering the flow of traffic even more? What about drivers. Do they contribute to even slower speeds and longer delays. Whether it's constantly changing lanes or even not keeping up with traffic flow. I...

Is this what ROAD TOLLS will cost in ENGLAND?

It looks likely pay per mile road tolling is coming. How much might it cost per mile? In England we already have tolling of tunnels and bridges, but we also already have 1 road that is actually a toll road. How much MONEY did Highways England WASTE on this?

A tunnel probably wouldn't be the cheapest, but it would be permanent. The technology is there, but beaurocracy will get in the way of any construction. I had heard on my travels of North Wales, that if Wylfa power station has the go ahead again in the future, something would have to be done at Britannia. On the underside of Britannia lie the magnificent carved lions, well wort a look if you got time, but i dont think a truck will get there😂.
The first bridge across the Severn was a Railway Bridge on the line between Berkeley Road Gloucestershire and Lydney Junction it also crossed the Berkeley Canal. This bridge was hit by a couple of barges travelling up the river in poor visibility on the 25th of October 1960 bringing down two spans resulting in the bridge being demolished iat the end of that decade. The Severn Tunnel has always suffered from water ingress hence the pumping station you showed in your film. The line is now electrified using overhead Catenary so needs constant maintenance.
Airfield is on the right at the top, not the left.

25 years of labour government in Wales screwing quite a lot of thing we didn't need a devolved government it's caused nothing but harm.
did you know that the traffic sign by Tower Bridge says 18 t but when you go online it says 18t MGW so they can fine HGV drivers
And that's the correct way to drive that road - OUTTA YORKSHIRE!!
I believe that truck manufacturers are partially to blame for bringing all these 'drivers assists' and auto gearboxes, it takes away the ability for a driver to manually control a truck through the use of its gears when going up or down hills, now you have to rely on the retarder to control the speed on a decent with a gearbox that won't allow you to choose the right gears, for going up steep inclines the old 12/16 speed gearboxes gave the driver more control over the speed of the truck and allowed you to apply more power through a selected gear rather than a computer choosing one thinking it knows best.
I remember the first time I went to Asda Erith, my sat nav had an absolute paddy and wouldn't let me go over the fish roundabout and I ended up getting in a pickle. Eventually I phoned my mate who had been before who told me to ignore the signs and go over the fish roundabout and I have done ever since. It really is silly.
@@TheHasselBoff cool name you've got there! Yes that'a exactly what happened to my colleague. When he finally arrived at asda his 1st question was... 'how the hell did you get here?'. The conversation was based on hia sat nav sending him left ar the fish 🤣
Hello there I've never done Sutton Bank but it seems it has the same problems as Froghall Bank on the A52 in Staffordshire. This has regular stuck wagons but I have to say I've been surprised recently at the severe lack of traction traveling unladen up there, having to feather the throttle to keep it from spinning. Just as you say wagons that tend to get stuck usually get it wrong going backwards as with no room for error if it goes wrong you can't go forward or worse they slide backwards and end up jack knifed across the road. Good video that was, all the best.
What an eclectic mix of music bro! WoW 😂
I ran through there today and one of our colleagues did hold back as did I. Most drivers are impatient and log jam the lane closure. If everybody left a bigger gap and actually merged in turn then the system would work.
Used it many times fully loaded, but fortunately , always a wagon and drag so the weight goes back over the drive axle. The only time I had any issues was the first time in the new auto box truck, after many years in a manual, when it couldn't change quick enough. Luckily I was only part loaded so could do a hill start. After that it was into manual every time!!
Like you say use manual and take hiarpin on the others side, as if on the corect side the angle would be like putting the brakes on, If you were fully loaded it would STOP you, in the past select the right gear at the bottom and say in that gear. Problem Number ONE how many of the new twats can drive in manual ??????? you can see by the photos though, Who Cannot lol.
That must be some Irish Scania 770 V8 with the limiter turned off. 😂
@@spenstrangward5126 would you believe be if I said it was a Seddon Atkinson Stratos with a 325bhp engine and an Eaton twin splitter gear box?

@thetruckerseye you and owner driver?
@spenstrangward5126 Oh no!!! Been there, done that 20 years ago. No money but all the headaches in doing that! I genuinely earn more working for someone.
Of course one good solution would to be making the railways better for freight - if all those trucks could be replaced by a single freight train congestion would be much better. I've always thought that the best solution would be a railway tunnel underneath the straight, which would remove the bottleneck of the single track on the bridge. Then, you diverge the northbound A55 onto the deck where the railway is now, and each direction can now be duelled. Of course money is the main problem unfortunately, as there just isn't the funding.
No holdups? Nobody broken down? No sat nav driver doing a U turn??😅
@@JurivonStolzenberg14 haha none of that. Surprising too as it was around 4pm!!!
I have a load of photos of the fire . I also have a photo of the hand painted commemorative sign which was fitted inside one of the "Tubes" which reads:~ "LAST RIVET DRIVEN HOME BY ROBERT STEPHENSON 5th. MARCH 1850" This piece of the "Tube" is now in the National Railway Museum, York. It's a miracle it survived the fire.
Mostyn Docks are still available in extreme emergency, what chaos that would cause!
Excellent video. Well presented and filmed, sound reasoning and sensible suggestions.
Make the road into a bridge, and go OVER the railway.
I don't live too far away from this bridge, and as a retired HGV driver, I know it well. There used to be screens on each side of the bridge that gave ample warning of overheight vehicles. Why they were removed, I have no idea.
The main problem is Auto Gear Box,s.
I taught in bangor . According to a pupil I taught, the boys involved in the fire (one of witch was his uncle), the burning magazine was a cover story they told the police. The boys first stole a flare gun from dickeys boat yard and then used it to try and shoot bats in the bridge..

That 'should' happen yes!
Brilliant Video, I only drive small stuff (3.5 ton) and there are a few hills in my area where I would take the longer but easier to climb route, but there was one thing that your failed to mention and that is some trucks actually use roads like this to get to places like farms and don't have the choice of an easier to climb route. I have seen smaller milk wagons that operate with a larger drawbar trailer and will leave this somewhere and go off and fill the smaller wagon with milk and then come back and load the trailer up with milk, and repeating this.
@@Ashworth-Media thanks for the kind words

I used to drive a Scania 500 V8. It was in for a service. I used a Volvo Fh 16 480. In the early hours on a cold frosty icy morning about 3.a.m. Fully laden. The Volvo slowly but surely climbed the hill. Using driving skill and the rear axle raised diff lock. Eventually reaching the top/summit 😊. The following week I had my Scania 500 V8. Same senario 3a.m cold icy. I thought 500 versus a 480, no problem. I got three quarters way up the hill and stalled 😮🙄😬🤯. No traction I tried everything. Starting a fully laden truck three quarters up the hill is/was impossible. Luckily no other traffic around at 3a.m. I reversed down way down below the severe gradient. The truck was an automatic the lowest it would drop was third. Before trying to climb again I selected manual switched it down to first. With lightweight use of acceleration not harsh slowly I made it to the top. I was disappointed with my Scania 500 V8 😮 compared to a Volvo Fh 16 480 😂. The Volvo has much more torque.
Wish you would do a video on truck driver services in the UK. Such as Showers, toilet and food/coffee,tea and parking. Is parking paid or free?

@@simonbatty5442 my 1st slip of the tongue 🤣. I meant Pickering but got all excited as I was running out of time making the video 🤣. I did address that in the description before release haha
If you get to the hairpin, you've done the worst bit.
I like the way you mentioned about selecting manual in the gearbox, I drive a Daf and even when you select manual and hold the revs steady to climb a hill the dam gearbox still switches back to auto and changes up, Ive had this happen often on the lower part of the climb before the first bend but also halfway up before the steepest part. If you were not expecting this it will bog you down very quick.
Just keep putting the word out really. Nothing else for it. Manual box for steep ascents and use the terrain as it comes.
No one is taught how to use the wide angled mirror on blind side reversing, it's easy once you know how to use it
