Fog is a nightmare, especially on the M62 over Saddleworth. But whatever road I drive my truck on I always see the same when there's fog patches. Car drivers flying past ignoring conditions and often ignoring warning signs on gantries. Yes it's clear directly in front but suddenly they hit a dense fog patch in the dark and they're doing 70mph blind. However when I slow my truck down struggling with visabilty the cars aren't slowing down, they're still doing 70mph. If traffic ahead stops or slows to say 40mph these folks have no chance of stopping in time. It's the "It'll never happen to me" syndrome... Until it does happen.
As an EX Truck driver Fog and heavy rain is bad news as the spray off the tyres of six axles is as bad as Fog especially on a motorway here they are no lights and you just about see them and that is double checking as-well. but agree warning signs and vastly reduce speed signs well before Sheppey bridge need installing.
The best solution would be to install the same systems as on the Dartford crossing & limit the number of vehicles on the crossing at any one time & reduce the speed limit to 50 mph as on the Dartford crossing as this is no different to the Dartford Bridge.
Because of the auto function on headlights, a lot of drivers think that their car will light up like a Christmas tree when necessary, but the sensors can’t detect fog. I have seen many drivers tootling around with just the daytime running lights on when it’s foggy. I’m curious to know what changed your opinion of the distribution centre!
Ive never delivered to that Aldi DC but I have done to a few Lidl and Aldi DC’s All I can comment regarding my thoughts on them its clear to see how they keep prices low! And there’s a reason we are called ‘professional’ drivers as most of us are!
Of course it will happen again perhaps not at this scale but it will because folks don't slow down when there is fog and a heck of a lot of drivers either don't switch on the lights in fog or are driving with just the side lights on. I would rather drive at night in fog than during daylight hours as it is more likely that they all have their lights on at night
The amount of people who are completely clueless as to which lights to use and when is quite amazing. Too many people are also far too reliant on 'automatic' lights they have in their vehicles too.
@@thetruckerseyeso often drivers rely on auto headlights / daylight running lights which often only illuminate the front of the car and leave the back with no lights at all ... On motorways I drive with dipped headlights all the time now as so many drivers on the only seem to look for (front) lights not vehicles Driving standards have gone down a lot since I passed over 35 years ago!
Great short story and video. It's been a good few years since I have been to the Isle of Sheppey, last time would of been 1986 so before this bridge had been built. I can remember my cousins on the island asking what was going on that day. In my opinion maybe someone should be looking at a variable speed limit with speed cameras in place for those drivers that are ignorant like they have on the M6 and I dare say on a few other roads now.
Sadly road improvement have to go through "Coffin Engineering" first to see if they should spend the money. On a lighter note for 15 years I had the honor of owning a Dunkirk Little Ship, just a wooden family cruiser built in 1930 at a timber yard and boatbuilder in Castleford, Yorkshire on the Aire & Calder Canal. In 1940 she was collected from her mooring on the Thames by Tough's boatyard, towed down river and handed over to the Royal Navy. She spent three days ferrying troops off the beach to larger craft offshore. Returning to Blighty holed at the waterline and some say carrying 85 souls. I did try this once on the Thames at Runnymead and managed to get 70 persons onboard but ran out of people and the River Police came along so we got two more on. Lazy Days remained in the Royal Navy and was stationed at Chatham, moored at Queensborough and carried out enemy parachute mine patrols of the Thames Estuary. I attended a church service there and found out ex RN vessel got free mooring on the jetty and so I claimed it. The jetty was much better than the old floating coal barge on the otherside of the cut. Plus we could get to the pub. Sailed past the Richard Montgomery many times during the time I owned her as she was either kept at City Airport marina on the Thames or Cuxton on the Medway. It was an weird feeling sailing past the wreck as we would take the short cut between wreck and shore. Not that it mattered much which side as I'm sure it would be over in a flash.

@@Sluetch90 hahaha. I'm not usually there too long though, although my visits are getting longer with that Aldi RDC!

@@tomwinch9107 Totally agree, a lot of these drivers safety ad ons are just dumbing down drivers as they don't have to think for themselves.

Truck drivers are sitting much higher up than car drivers and will have much better visibility in fog and spray ;)
I was there I was going to work Elmley prison
Now all the prisoners can just walk over the bridge to freedom 😅
No pedestrians allowed on that bridge 😂😂😂
