      I would strongly bet, the improvement on a phono stage is huge. My thoughts are that a phono stage amplifies such a fine and tiny voltage from cartridge (mV) to a 1-2V output if there is noise in the process it will follow into the sound. So if you remove most of it, it should have a big difference.

    I really appreciate this channel and the ABX channel for insights on building speakers. But for ABX, I never would have thought of using butcher block instead of MDF. Your suggestion of adding weight to the base of the speaker to address vibrations is something I never would have thought of. This video suggests more food for thought. Instead of a MTWW configuration where I have to put the midrange above the tweeter to make room for the 15” woofers, I should have considered doing a sub/sat system. I’m thinking of MTMs on stands with separate subs. With dual 10” woofers, there should be no issue getting the mains down to 80-100 Hz. Decoupling the woofers from the rest of the speaker addresses vibration and I have the ability to position the woofers in the room as needed. The changes in the design I was thinking of were questionable in terms of impact. This has the potential to actually be worth doing. Thank you!!!!

    • @ccdccd8615
      @ccdccd8615 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@hificave Will do. I’m using different drivers than you are using. The tweeter is the SB Audience Compression driver in a custom built horn and rear cover. Using a horn/wave guide for a compression horn is common. Controlling the rear waves with a rear cover FAR less common. The 10” mid-woofer is the Scan Speak Classic 10” paper cone and the 15” woofer are the SB Bianco Open Baffle woofer. Crossover parts are high quality (Mundorf/Goertz) and minimal. Basically you need resistors to attenuate the compression driver to match the 10” woofer and a cap to keep the compression driver from destroying itself by trying to play too low. That’s pretty much it. Have high hopes for how the speaker turns out. But if I want something more, your journey has helped to direct me as to what to try next to have the biggest impact.

    This video affirms some of the decisions I made on my own speakers. They are being built using 1.75” thick butcher block. The ONLY reason it isn’t thicker is because thicker butcher block was not readily available. For the woofer portion of the baffle, this is reinforced with an added layer of .75” MDF on the back. We may end up using two MDF panels. The original design called for cutting the speaker out of either 3.25” or 3.5” solid wood (the designer either has or has access to a fancy CNC machine). You mentioned the upper bass range reproduction. My designer was going to do a 2-way speaker. However, in testing the design, he found that the bass was lacking in the 300-600 hz region. His solution was to change to a 3-way design to allow for a woofer whose sole job was to reproduce sound from 1200 hz to 200 hz. There is a first order passive crossover at 1200 hz and a 4th order LR electronic crossover at 200 hz. I want to push back a bit on bi-amping. It depends on the design. IMHO, most 3-way designs will benefit from bi-amping the woofer. The original design of my speaker was a passive 3-way with a single 15” woofer. I changed the design to use dual 15” woofers so bi-amping became a no-brainer. However, this designer has back loaded horn designs using high efficiency woofers (around 98db). Would I bi-amp a design like this? Probably not. My final point is a fact that gets FAR too little discussion: the best location for bass is usually not where the rest of the speaker is located. So I can get a so called “full range” speaker that gets down to 20-25 hz in an anechoic chamber that may not perform well or has a serious peak in the bass which is solely the product of room geometry. Especially if the crossover to your woofers is at or below the point at which bass becomes omnidirectional, you are better off having separate bass cabinets that you can position in your room as needed. Room geometry is the reason why there is little dispute over using EQ in the bass region. If you don’t have separate bass cabinets, EQ is usually the next best thing for good in room bass response.

    Hello. Just through half of this and it is appreciated. I will be taking your advice to heart. Whatever, I have used Eminence 15"Cx with cast basket in open baffles, and, you need to have the extra thick solid wood panel. I wonder what you will say, then, about more complex music played. Give is some outside curve, maybe a deep cutout like in this speaker to broaden resonance. You have a lot of guitars, eh, don't you? 🙂

    • @Rasenkrieger
      @Rasenkrieger 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The resonant panel is somewhat like the guitar body. I have a cutout for an 18" below my 15inch Eminence coax on that thick solid spruce board and think it is a mess but surely breaks up the board resonance.

    When using traditional sealed subwoofers I have used an external high pass filter to send 90hz to my mains and then used the subs low pass filter at about 70 to 80hz with a 12 db slope on each. It sort of filled in the gap between them nicely because of my traditional subs high output. From the research that I'm currently devouring, it seems that when both drivers are open baffle (the subs and the full range), that the crossovers can have some overlap, sometimes substantial in order to get a nice blend. Here in your example I see that you have a shared 20hz frequency between the two drivers and values that are closer to traditional box speakers and subs. In other open baffle designs, I've seen seasoned builders like yourself letting the w15 run at crossovers settings ranging from 150hz to as high as 500hz. The same could be said for the factory built leonidas and the macara speakers. However, all of those systems had both drivers placed on one baffle whereas you have moved the subs away from the main drivers. Is that why your crossovers are closer to traditional values? Desperately try to learn here. Thank you!

      Using them up to 500hz in the same baffle was never good for me with this full range driver. But it was required with the platinum 10. But its very different driver and had a lower qts… Considering the following: Having them in room corners now and optimizing the position of the ful range driver on the baffle and in the room to maximize both driver performances might be… part of the explanation..

    Happiness Is Easy, by Talk Talk, as well as Does Caroline Know?, and Mark Hollis self titled album is a must-own. And ideally selecting speakers which fit your room, followed by a synergistic amp which matches them tonality wise as well as offering the proper amount of current, versus raw power rating is more important. Yet if your electronics aren’t getting said current draw ( right gauge of power cords ) then said electronics aren’t being driven or heard to their fullest potential, cabling ( especially the right flavoring) matters just as much, and never overlook the importance of the connectors themselves.

    As someone wrote earlier on, each one of us have a deep bedded perception on what sounds, as well as feel correctly balanced to us. Logically friends and associates of mine whom are more accustomed to older recordings or amplified music, can’t really understand the beauty of which jazz or classical recordings have to offer. I’ve taking the time to understand what has the capability of moving me to tears, if it isn’t engaging?, why bother at all?……., said time it takes to understand the sound signature of each component is vital in how the final voicing as the system collectively counts more than simply allowing oneself to be drawn into mere sound, as opposed to learning to hear deeper into the music itself, bass doesn’t not a system make, if it’s boomy, there are very few ways of restoring said balance once it’s lost. Unless one’s recordings are strictly geared towards pipe organ recordings?, I’d say please thy self above all, o4 anyone else. Knowing which brands of tubes do what also counts, say for example while NOS Black-plate RCA | Sylvania preamp tubes in tandem offer some of the best vocal shading I’ve encountered to date, Raytheon is more geared towards low end impact, while lacking in other areas, seek out brands like Lorenz ( Germany ) | Thompson-CSF or Mazda Black-Plate ( both from France ) | NEC and TEN Kobe ( both from Japan ) and than understanding that balance versus noise is the key objective. The extra bass impact you’re referring to by doing an array of 3 bass drivers of subs isn’t necessarily the best path to pursue……, dude in the end, you’ve to satisfy yourself above anyone else, least you have lost your own individuality. Just food for thought.

    diy is fun, take a lot of time. but only passive subwoofers and kit class d power amps are worth it.
