Hiking The Birkebeiner trail | Rena - Lillehammer
After attending a meeting in Rena, I took the chance to hike back home to Lillehammer. The Birkebeiner Trail is a famous race held every year in both summer and winter. It remembers a historic event in 1206 when two men carried a baby king across the mountains in Norway. There are ski, running, and biking races on this trail from Rena to Lillehammer, and it is this trail that I'm going to follow back to Sjusjøen.

Our mission for this trip was simple: to catch some fish and eat whatever we found along the way. Not bringing any food was new to me, and I was curious to see how my body would react to the lack of food during the journey. We started the trip on the east side of Espedalsvatnet and had to packrat over the lake to begin the ascent toward Megrundstjønnet. With 500 meters of elevation over a stret...

23:01 I like very much your Video's in summer and winter. Thank you for sharing. It reminds me when I was younger using in winter the pulka and such fire tent. I used it also when canoeing fermund with my family in simulator light. Used my titanium stove as you do and fixed the holes the same way. But I do not have so many holes 😊. All the best for you, Peter
Thanks for the comment, Peter 😃 I’m glad to hear that you enjoy the videos. The amount of holes I had in my tent was extreme. I was advised to drop the spark arrestor, maybe that helps 👌
Yes, that is right. I started to write the comment because of the spark separator. Later I recognized you took it away, so the sparks will usualy fly far away. As I use the oven only in bad weather its no problem to nature
@@peters4841 The spark arrestor clogged up, and when I tried to clean it, the top lid fell off. That's why I stopped using it ☺
Bare hyggelig.
and then a couple of water bladders ;)
No thanks 😅
Nice atmosphere and landscape. The fog creates some mystery.
It was a great experience, and I can’t complain about the weather 👌
The Altra Olympus GTX mids are decent for long distance cold weather hikes from 40-20 F.
Great suggestion! I’m my experience, the only downside with GTX trail runners is that they become less waterproof after a short while - at least that’s the case for the Hoka Speedgoat mid GTX. Maybe I should give it one more chance 🤔
I love my Lundhags boots. They can be rough on the feet, because of the low padding, but they’re absolutely BOMBproof and I swear by them no matter the trip. Love the vids, keep em coming!
I agree with you. I love them, but they aren’t made for high intensity hiking. The sweat builds up inside, and for me, that leads to blisters.
Just discovered your channel. Great stuff. You are the Nordic Liam Brown 😎
Welcome to the hiking crew🥾
Waw 😍
Femunden National Park is a very quiet place with beautiful landscapes, good video my friend. 49:10.
I couldn’t agree more 👌 Thanks 😃
You need to check out winter combat shoes mate. I use the Salomon Tundra Pro-they're rated for -40°C, super comfortable, lightweight, and so far, no sores!
Thanks for the tip 🙌 I will check it out ASAP😃
I never understood why people dislike the fog, I love it. Mads, try the Nemo Tensor mats, they’re the best I’ve ever had.
I have never tried anything from Nemo actually, but I’ve heard the sleeping mats are great 👍 The durability of the Thermarest pads are disappointing.. 🤷♂️
Hei.
Wow the woful maker looks awesome!
It sure is 👌
What kind of temerature rating does your enlightend equipment quilt have?
10°F (-12°C).
Beautiful hike even in the fog😊
I agree ☝️Especially when it clears up during the day.
Great as expected… “carbon saving trip” earlier post 😂 Should have had a fire to warm your boots the 👸🏻 princess is not there to assist. New Brunswick Canada 🇨🇦🧌
Well said☺️ Leather can get aufully stiff if it freezes up. I actually had to heat the boots over the stove in order to get them on. The first try - before I started filming - was a complete disaster 😅
@ Hi Would it be possible to see a closer sometime if those boots you were wearing? I’ve always been curious about the manufacture .. I understand you can put liners in them too. I envy alot of your outdoor gear you have over there but not here..leaning towards the winter kit like Boot bags the pull over cordura bag. Kind regards Andrew
@ Lundhags have models with wool liners, but the once I wear doesn’t have that. They are designed to be worn with two pair of wool socks. I would say that’s enough in most conditions- especially if you stay active 👍
Great stuff...eco, carbon saving trip...fantastic...
I didn’t think about that, but yeah, I guess so ☺️
Hahaha putting on frozen boots 🤣 that took me right back to the military 👏🏻 Details like this is what makes the magic shine trough for me. The lighting conditions in the morning, and the continued use of insane great footage just makes me smile from beginning to end in your videos Mads. Incredible and love to see you just smile and enjoy the moment even if it is cold and a long hike. 360 dark slide 🤣 Again, love to join you on these trips, sitting in a warm cabin, fire in the oven and sipping to my warm coffee. ☕
You're good at noticing details, Thomas :) It turned out to be a surprisingly nice trip, even though the focus was on hiking. I actually had to hold my shoes over the burner before trying to put them on. It was completely impossible at first. You are welcome to join me anytime 😃
Skikkelig flott tur over fjellet 😊👍
👍👍🌷🌷❤❤🌹🌹👌👌😊😊
i like the hide-and-seek part, absolutely creative.
It’s definitely original 😊
What is the plan if you end up in the water? Water temp, time to unconsciousness and time to death in that lake is probably something like: 32.5-40° F (0-4° C) 15-30 minutes 30-90 minutes
The plan is to stay out of the water ☺️ I guess you are right about time to unconsciousness. It’s something you definitely want to avoid 🥶
👏⛰️👌🇳🇴🤠
never get tired of watching your videos, thanks for sharing, greetings from Indonesia
Thanks 🙏
What fishing gear are you using?
Berkley Twilight 3-12 grams rod and a Shimano reel :)
Great videos, make more. Good luck.
Thanks 😃 I will 👍
Takker for tips :)
@@Fjellmann77 To gode valg :) Batteriene varer lenge, men skjønner hva du mener.
Pizza, nice!!
Kjempeflott tur dere to hadde! 😊
I’m glad to hear that you enjoy my videos 😊 Winter camping isn’t for everyone, and that’s fair 🥶 what I like about hiking and camping is that you’re never too old to go camping. It’s truly a lifelong activity 🥾
How much did your gear, etc., weigh?
Probably about 40-50 kg on this trip 😊
@@HikingHansen after a few decades of winter travel, and approximately four years of observing TH-cam videos, you are the first person I have asked this question. Trust issues, and you strike me as legitimate. I appreciate your getting back to me.
I’m glad you did 😃 Keep em coming 👍 Have a great weekend.
Foreslår å prate norsk i stedet for litt halv god engelsk.
Takk for innspill 👍
Can you tell me the name off that orange anorak you wearing
Amundsen cotton anorak.
Best video to date! Long, but doesn't feel like it. Perfect blend of everything. When I first saw you brought a lavvo, I was really hoping to see a wood fired oven, but for the first few minutes, didn't seem like it was going to happen. Proved me wrong, luckily. Hope to get to try this setup some time myself!
Thanks 😃 Of course I brought the stove. It would have been a totally different trip without it 🥶
Thanks for sharing your adventure. I can’t wait for my next visit to Norway. Looks like Hardangervidda in April 👍
April is perfect 👌 Marked trails all over the plateau, the tourist cabins are open, and a lot of people are out 😊
If you are going to Hardangervidda in April I hope you know it's usually still lots of snow and winter conditions there at that time of the year. Usually it's skiing conditions even in May. The tourist cabins open in the end of June.
@@HikingHansen In April you need skis on Hardangervidda, also it's mostly covered in snow in May. The tourist cabins open in the end of June.
@@megalep7025 Yes my fjellskis are ready to go!!!! 😊
Enjoyed this video, was curious was the thumbs up with coffee a homage to Erik Normark?
I’m glad you did 😊 It wasn’t my intention, but it turned out so ☺️ I hope he’ll be back soon🤞
Takk for alle eventyrene, Hansen!
We brought the swedish classic Kexchoklad to Norway and Valdalen this summer. But now I understand that we did it completely wrong. We should have bought Kvikk Lunsj! 😄
The Swedish chocolate is also good, but the original hiking chocolate will always be Kvikk Lunsj 😊
