You have a ton of young trees started- how do you plan to start making money on them ? Do you plan to sell wholesale or start a retail sales operation ?
I sell locally now, but plan to ship in the future.
Great job, one question, what do you name them when you sell them? Or do you keep them all yourself?
Have thought of getting a portable cement mixing machine to make life easier.
That would be a great idea!
Thanks for the video! Love your channel. I haven't had a hobby in a long time and Japanese maples are what I have started Along with some other regular plant. I have been purchasing a lot of different Hibiscus's this year and Asian and oriental lilies. I am transplanting volunteer seedlingsThat have been popping up all over my parents house and just around town. I am using Canadian spanglem peat moss and perlite. I've been looking for a good pine mulch to use but have not been satisfied locally. I just a week ago bought a bag of Happy Frog soil conditioner and have started to mix that in. I was wondering if I could mix some Black Kow manure that I have purchased. I'm a manager at Tractor Supply so I get a discount on stuff LOL. Wondering what your thought is on the Black Kow? Also one product that I endorse wholeheartedly for almost everything is Super Thrive. It's like steroids for plants and it's not fertilizer. Sure you know all about it. Is that good for Japanese maples? Have not used it on JM yet only ALL other plants.
Great update!
Thanks!
Thanks for the update! Do you fertilize your seedlings or wait until they are older?
I wait until they are at least 1 year old before fertilizing them.
Do you water the cuttings in the tub as well as mist them? Also do you drill holes in the bottom of the tub for drainage?
I only mist them, that provides plenty of water. Yes, I drill many holes in the bottom of the tubs for drainage.
Hi, do you sale seeds for Japanese maple?
I do mine under 24-hour light cycles 👍
Any tips on white mold?
Provide good ventilation to try to avoid it and use a good OMRI certified fungicide. Watering early in the morning instead of in the evening also helps so the leaves have time to dry before it gets cooler in the evenings.
Hello ❤
Why not use G&B Acid Mix which is specifically for conifers and maples and other acid loving plants..
I have not tried the Acid mix with Japanese Maples, because the regular soil has worked so well. Japanese Maples like very slightly acidic soil, and the acid mix may be too acidic. The pH of the regular G&B potting soil is in the ideal range for Japanese Maples.
How well do you think a coral bark Japanese maple would root from cuttings with, of course, hormone powder?
I have had success with rooting Sango Kaku.
Nice Johnathan. I grew 3 & gave 2away. Mine died & the gifted ones grew like weeds!
Great information! Thank you!
I just bought an Orangeola. I live in Michigan zone 5b. I plan to put it in a pot would I be able to leave it on a covered porch that gets South sun over the winter? I also have an unheated garage I could put it in. Which would you recommend?
I see that G&B offers what they call blue ribbon potting soil. Do you know the difference between it and what you recommend? Thanks
Do you cut just below a node?
❤❤❤
hello, what's the time between planting the seed and seeing something going out the ground?
what city did you buy your Shishi?
Good to know as I want to buy a potted tree this spring for my patio, thank you!
Hi, wondering, do you just mist it that one time at planting? I live in a very arid region.
No, you need to mist it at least 2 times per day.
I love this particular tree. Just the sight of one brings an internal joy to me. A deep rooted one I can't explain 🥲
Hey I just bought a amber ghost and it looks like normal green Japanese maple. It doesn't have any vaining at all. Do they look like regular green Japanese maple around this time?
It should always have some reticulation as far as I have seen even in shade. Where did you get it? It may be mislabeled.
Cool , how do you protect these from excess water from rain ? And frost etc in the winter ?
In my Zone 8b garden, I have never had a problem with cold or rain problems.
I have a beautiful Japanese maple which a friend dug up on her playground when she was teaching. When it outgrew the oit, she gave it yo me. It is my pride and joy!
Awesome!
thankyou very much
Air layering what that means?
It is a way to root a branch on a tree while it is still connected to the tree. Here is my video on this: th-cam.com/video/fnZSHhW_p9c/w-d-xo.html
Mine are starting to wilt so sad don’t think they’re taking 😩😩😩
You took the cuttings way too earlier in the year! Wait until the end of June to take semi ripe cuttings.
Which cultivar are you touching at 13:19? I have been trying to figure out its name for a while
Propagate ONLY the copywrited ones because fuck that shit....their fucking plants..plants!
Thank you for your time and effort on this subject, I appreciate it very much
Very helpful enjoying
Very helpful enjoying
Thank you very helpfully
Reduction cut massacre
Great., informative video, thank you. I have a 37 year old Japanese maple in a small to medium sized concrete pot, it has rooted through the bottom of its container and is very root bound, It has been like this for a good few years now. I would be very interested in seeing a video on how to rescue a maple in this condition please.
Try this root pruning video: th-cam.com/video/8cDSBcNfg60/w-d-xo.htmlsi=dKr79CIT7UCG8o6t
You will need to wait until the tree is dormant though...
Thank you for your super speedy reply! I appreciate your help.
I have quite a few seedlings sprout up near my 20 year old Acer which is a Bloodgood. It is about 18-20 feet tall and wide, loves it spot and is brilliant red. My husband has typically pulled and thrown out the seedlings. This year I want to pot a few up. Is it better to do it now in May or wait u til the Fall? One is about 2 years old, and the other is 1 year.
Pot them up now, as long as they have their "true leaves". However, keep them out of the direct sun while they get established.
Cool project!
This is very interesting. When you used the method with the stick in the middle of the propagation tented tray, did you make any holes to the tent or maybe periodically opened it up?
I opened it up around 2 times per day for misting, but if I remember correctly, I didn't have holes in the plastic.
@@JonnyMaple thank you for your answer 🙏
Where will you put them when the winter comes ???
In my Zone 8b garden, I can leave them outside. If you live in a zone 7 or below, you will need to protect them for the first winter.
✌️🌞✨🌻
Can I buy a small Maple from you?
Do you know if there are any ways to maximize the amount of pink in the leaves? I get some, but it's fairly scarce and faint where it is present.
You could just buy a acer butterfly very similar tree and the butterfly has pink tinge on leaves
I'm familiar with Butterfly. Not really a fan. The leaf shape, size, and variegation are completely different. All they share is including the colours of green, white, and pink.
@@damontolhurst Just a thought that's all👍
Hey, I'm not an expert but I've seen that the colors are (unfortunately) greatly affected by the climate (temperatures and sun exposure). In my area (Greece - Zone 9b-10a approx), I mostly get boring green colors in all my maples, but I have been experimenting, I put a few high in the mountains where it gets around -10°C in winter and spring comes very slowly and the colors are amazing. Sun also affects the colors, so I try to give them as much as possible until they look happy. If I was to make a suggestion, it would be: - Put them in the ground once you're sure about the sun tolerance (colder roots - slow leafing out - I've noticed way better colors) - As much sun as they can tolerate. Some crispy leaves would be OK (you might need to shelter them with a shade cloth in the hottest summer months until you find the proper exposure for your area). Morning sun usually is the most common advice. For me that's not possible due to the house orientation. - Fertilize with smaller doses (I do 30-50% of the suggested) the variegated plants, nitrogen leads to greener leaves and longer internodes (slender looking trees) All the above with a disclaimer that I'm no expert, but hope I help a bit!
I'm thinking there's a market for cutting grown cultivars that are common to bonsai.
I agree! I plan to set up a larger scale cutting propagation operation this year.
Hey, do you have seeds or baby maple that we can buy from Canada?
I only ship within the USA.
How resistant to rot and diseases will the plant grown from a cutting be compared to a grafted specimen?
Hi Jonny, what is the size of the square pot at time stamp 4:0, and where did you purchase it? Thanks
These are 6" tall Anderson Band Pots. These are available on Amazon here: amzn.to/44RczUB
Amber ghost is one of my favorites too, glad you made this video on it,thank you.
