BYE BYE GEARBOX. 19 minutes of pure fun chasing a Lotus Europa until bang.... Donington Race 2
It was all going so well. P2 in my first race and after solving why my brakes were terrible (no material left on the front pads), I entered race 2 ready to go. Brakes were amazing and I cut my lap times by 1 second.
Having an awesome time until BANG. The gearbox destroyed itself 2 laps from the end.

    Great video - really good viewing - real man and machine stuff - felt like I was in the cockpit! Your viewers require two videos like that per week please!! Assume that’s a standard 2000E box in that championship - a very strong recommendation for you (if you need one) -- get in touch with Brian Hill of BGH Geartech - he’s out in the sticks in Kent, is a dillion years old, is a straight talker - but he’s been a Ford gearbox specialist since this family of gearboxes boxes were current. Most people in the Classic Ford world these days learnt their trade on newer stuff. Trust me - Brian Hill is the guy to go to. If you do look them up, insist on speaking to Brian. He built loads of boxes for me in the past for my Lotus Cortina - was a long time ago so wouldn’t remember my name I’m sure - but if you tell him you’ve been recommended and your a racer he’ll get interested and want to help.

    Something that i learnt in the past is that a high revving water pump (small pulley) can make a frothing of coolant in the system that creates air pockets.. Doesn`t seem to be related to this but i thought i would mention it. Are you using a standard radiator with the long filler neck?

    • @Tomkitek
      @Tomkitek หลายเดือนก่อน

      To be honest the water did look like it had a lot of air in but possibly by boiling? The engine ran on the dyno with the water pump with no problems so I assume that it ok. My radiator is an alloy version and has no fill point on it, only on the thermostat housing on the head. This I think is the route of my problems….

    There's a vast amount of NGK spark plugs that are fakes . So good even motor factors as well as eBay have been fooled by them . Prone to failure, now I'm not saying it's the cause of your issue but if the centre electrode has let go it's possible that's done damage to bore. I've run Denso plugs for some years now and find them better in my motorcycles for what it's worth . I've never seen a centre break loose like that in all my years on spanners with both bikes and cars . With a 1293 tuned mini I once had running NGK plugs the bugger wouldn't start in cold weather, turned out be plugs , be fine all day once run once so since then always had a little thing about NGK plug heat coding . Replaced with champion plugs ( yeah it's a few years back Lol) and never had an issue with mini again . This is an informative reply from a 40 plus year dude on spanners , bikes and cars plus bike race mechanic for a few years , not an armchair diagnosis of failure . If you have batch of plugs bought at same time change them just in case . I retained some of the good old catalogue,s for spark plugs from the 1990's before we went digital and can cross reference plugs for you if needed . Ordering stuff today for vehicles I find older engine design using thinner spec oils , different grade of plugs etc yet the design not changed other than management systems and more sensors .

    The Spitfire diff was always a weak point on a Vixen. But better that than the g/box. A longer diff (3.89 or 3.63) would be a bit stronger as less teeth and therefore a bit more metal in the CW&P. However a vibration may just be a UJ. Nice race though, I didn't notice any lack of pace. Seemed to keep those pesky Elans honest until the long straights. Then it's just physics being lighter with more power. I'm still impressed how you gain so much under braking & thru the corners. Maybe a longer diff would keep you closer on the straights ??

    • @Tomkitek
      @Tomkitek 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah I’m going to check out all the UJs but the diff looks to have a lot of free play so may be due a rebuild. The Elans are almost in touching distance. Hopefully I can get it back in for Cadwell. Should have a lot of fun there!

    Very neat and tidy race and as you expected the engine seemed to pull better than last season. The Morgan (V8?) not pulling away much down the straights. So quick under braking and thru the corners - awesome. What lbs springs do you run? Also curious as to what diff ratio you're running?

    • @Tomkitek
      @Tomkitek 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah the Morgan was a little slow exiting corners so I could sort of keep up. I cannot remember what the spring lbs are to be honest. Need to try and find paperwork. I run the 4.11 diff in it.

    Good result on a power circuit - think you were baulked a bit by a back marker just as you were getting into a rhythm. Being a Ford person, to me it ‘feels’ like you’re running 2000E ratios - reckon Bullet ratios would make a difference if your engine revs high enough. Bet you’re pleased with the results of your labours! Looking forward to the next one!! Keep the videos coming!

    • @Tomkitek
      @Tomkitek 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah it’s always tricky with back markers and it can help you or hinder but that’s all part of it. Last thing I want to do is damage cars so I always play it safe when lapping. Your right about the box. 2000e ratios. 4th does let me know a bit. Quite a jump between 3rd and 4th. Very happy though 👍

Sounds great, and seems to have torque from lower down the rev range than noted on previous videos ( or perhaps it just sounds more urgent ). I have fond memories of Snetterton, before the modernisation, even with an unintentional trip to the cabbage field 😅

      It’s made a massive difference. To keep up with those cars on a power circuit is great. I’m going to change the clutch biting point a touch. I’ve set it a little high so struggling off the start line and sometimes the gear changes were a bit clunky and shocking the diff

    Watching with interest. I had my engine rebuilt by SRD, excellent service. Intresting about the 4 - 2 - 1 being the best option. Also interested in who is fabricating your exhaust. By the way mine is for road use so, no competition to you😂.

    Ooh a pretty 711 ! Who's a lucky boy then ? Regarding manifold using modern Computer flow tests never seems to work on the car . Just had the same sort of thing on friends Kawasaki z1000 he was talked into using inversion cones in the headers to ease negative waves to cylinders blah blah etc . On a pc program it all looked convincing, in reality it shut motor down at 7,000 rpm ! There in the bin now, Try to listen to old School tuners , people who have passed on knowledge. Being of an age I was around when these engines were in production it's wonderful to see them still in action ! Anyway looks like you well sorted for this season so hoping for some good racing .. oh if you break it again me and Big Vinnie will be round for a word in your ear 😂😂

      I couldn’t believe it. It’s a big bore system but apparently it’s to do with it being a 4 into 1 system instead of 4-2-1. Absolute witchcraft.

    • @The_Cotswold_Cyclist
      @The_Cotswold_Cyclist 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Top job, that engine looks too nice to race! Good catch about the exhaust manifold. I think it's all too do with the pressure waves and therefore the scavenging between cylinders. All I know is 4:1 is meant to be great for top end and not much else.

    • @Tomkitek
      @Tomkitek 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Liam-cz9ik So I’ve had to make a little compromise. Duncan Reuben is getting one made for me which has 15” primary and 15” secondary’s. SRD said for peak performance they want 28” primary and 15” secondary but I’d have to get that custom made on the car which I just don’t have time for before the season. Apparently a 15” primary will lose me a little mid range torque but top end should be the same
