I will never understand why everyone loves "Up!" so much. MVSK, in my opinion, was their magnum opus. If we are going with TTs only, I feel like until Shooting Star, their japanese releases were so much stronger... I would have voted Grand Prix as their magnum opus out of their TTs, and if I had to go with a Korean one before Shooting Star, I'd actually pick Galileo. Up! Feels like a song that could have been released by anyone, for me it felt like a complete waste for Kep1er to release it especially after putting them on queendom. It was such an important moment to establish their identity. But honestly, what really should have happened was they should have had another release before Up! instead of going on Queendom.

Thanks for the video! Great analysis! This made me go back and listen to early Twice again. The music is amazing! I’m totally blown away again. I kind forgot how good the early release are, like up to Yes or Yes, even the re-package releases. Sad that there is just no more of this kind of k-pop being released these days.

super weird to extend hate towards sophia and lara as well when they were very respectful and willing to forgive manon almost immediately once she took the initiative to raise the issue. if you pay attention to the group now its clear that such drama is far far behind them and they are all really close especially manon and lara so its really strange and honestly tiresome that people are still trying to drag them for being upset about a situation that has clearly been resolved.

One of my favourite songs, made me cry because it's so relatable. In school if felt like I was just studying for the sake of it, it's what I was told to do. Now with a degree I'm still confused as to what I want, just with more debt.

I hate how HYBE (Big Hit) went from the company that created BTS, the group all about self love and healthy relationships and breaking barriers in terms of age, physical appearance, and music.... To the company that loves the drama, wants the youngest groups feasible, super capitalist and dog eat dog environs..... I guess it's just inevitable for a big music company to become evil.

KPOP the community and the companies, realllllly need to start distancing themselves from parasocial relationships. It's not healthy for ANYONE in the long run, not the fans, not the idols, and not the companies, who have to deal with stalkers, drama, and general mania on a near constant basis. The groups may really love and appreciate their fans, and genuinely wish for their happiness, but they are NOT your friends and family. They are PEOPLE, not gods. You see a small FRACTION of their lives, and it's a heavily edited bit that they and their company LETS you see.

I got in to kpop because it was similar but distinct from western pop music, now that kpop has become more and more in line with western pop music, it has lost the appeal that drew me to be a fan in the first place.

if you pay attention closely to that show, you will realize that its not her eccentric style or rebellious nature that got her replaced, but her action shows that women can also DOMINATING. she open a gate for other s. korean female artist to became a strong and independent figures, and that's a big problem in a patriarchical environment like s. korea. no disrespect to sunmi, but you can clearly see how boring the show was.

That's crazy. No matter how loosely I allow myself to interpret the lyrics of 'Meow' this supposed "fake haters" concept doesn't become apparent to me. The meaning/concept I derive from it is that these girls don't need the admiration or approval of anyone (read misogynistic young men, which there is an overabundance of when that age) to earn a living and put on an impressive show doing what they love to do, namely dancing and singing and looking like fierce felines while doing it. Where in the lyrics are haters mentioned? Even if that were the concept then considering the tendency of "armchair experts of everything/keyboard connoisseurs" AKA half of the world's Netizens to hate on young female idols for eating strawberries, or posing for photographs at the request of photographers, while doing mandatory promotional activities for their group/agency (in other words for literally: Doing. Their. Damn. Job.) that a preemptive "don't bother trying that nonsense with me" message in the music (i.e. their principal method of communicating with the world) wouldn't be completely uncalled for.

Everyone is sniffing glue. The song is catchy, and sticks in your head long after it ends. So many people always expect to be instantly wowed within the first few seconds of hearing something, that if they aren't they write it off as garbage, and return to listening to the same tired old songs they have been refusing to move on from for the past 5 years. If I were to have that mindset when previewing new music I would've only listened to 1 or 2 artists-not even the artists honestly but rather just 1 or 2 songs-in my entire life, The Weeknd because of the song "High for This" and Lil' Wayne because of the "Renegades" remix from his SQ4 mixtape (and perhaps a few others that I'm forgetting now). If I know the people making some piece of music are talented I always give it an actual chance to grow on me if it doesn't blow my mind immediately, and 9 times out of 10 myself (and my playlist) are grateful I did.

I think they're still using the 3rd generation song formula: simple easy to remember lyrics, simple instrumentals

I agree with you that popularity isn't really correlated at all with lyricism (other than for maybe groups like nct or gidle) However, the sonic qualities of a song is the most important aspect. If a song doesn't hit what the market demands then it won't do well. Newjeans is a great example because around their debut, there was a gap in the market for a chill, r&b sound that maintains a catchy kpop style chorus to easily be transmitted across tiktok Concept execution may play a role in a song's reception, however, I don't think it matters much. If Newjeans debuted with Hype Boy but the concept was more "back off haters" (which would, in this hypothetical scenario, be reflected in its lyricism and costuming in their music video), I don't think the reception would be any different. No one would call Newjeans' concept a "tired concept". I know a lot of people say that Hype Boy's reception was due to the nostalgia evoked by the y2k concept but I still think this was just an additional factor amounting to their positive reception - it was the production and vocals of Hype Boy alone which drove Newjeans' popularity

I'm not sure if it's a topic of interest to you but I think it's a fairly important topic to consider how exploitative companies can be on their fans with all the regular merch releases + different processes to obtain different types of poca Obviously a video like this would be very research heavy so once again, I'm not sure if you would be interested in talking about it but I think it's worth mentioning! Kpop really wants their fans to become compulsive spenders unfortunately

Its amusing that your video perfectly illustrates the pitfalls of judging an entire group by judging just one song (i.e., judging a book by its cover). If you listen to the "B-sides" (My Way, I'm Pretty, Tonight I might), you'll quickly realize that the lyrics of those songs are actually interesting and a refreshing twist.

let me say how i feel about this twicecoaster concept. in tt, the narrator is afraid to speak up, open up to the person they love. knock knock is the continuation of tt and since, according to you both are happening at the same time i feel like tt and knock knock are two different people in love with each other. tt is the shy one, not being able to express themselves. while knock knock is the other person, who wants the shy one to 'knock on their door'. but due to fear, the tt theme book closes in the knock knock mv, which causes the girls to be left outside. i think this means the narrator of tt was too afraid too confess, so their story 'ended' which caused the door in knock knock to be closed as well with the girls in the cold. that's what i think about this, it may not be fully correct or understandable because english is not my first language but i think this is an interesting way to look at it too :)

I listened to this as well and I know you want to be respectful of the two podcast host but Jon was (for a journalist) uninformed and Cara (for a kpop expert) extremely biased. Don't get me wrong, I love critical pieces about music and also kpop. I actually love them so much that it felt disappointing that this came from the New York Times? I expected more nuance. Jon was trying to maneuver the conversion into interesting spheres and looked at multiple views, but for a journalistic piece it was at some parts extremely tone-deaf. Btw a quick TH-cam research had shown them WHY jungkook chose to record this album. He said it himself in the behind the scenes of the Seven Recording. And if you are not even researching this, then how can i take your musical takes seriously?

I'm no fan of either group in the video, and I really have to say to y'all: thats not a hybe only thing. I got this with chaeyeon's 'knock', witch babymonsters 'sheesh' and so on. The most recent would be sabrina carpenters 'espresso'. I can imagine that korean labels will do it more often now on spotify. But if I would speculate from a non-fan-pov: I think that songs like 'perfect night', 'omg' or 'magnetic' are much more easy listening (for general audiences) than some other kpop songs, which makes them also appear more in 'Todays Top Hits' playlist.

hmm although the lyrics & concept is probably a problem when it comes to the heavy dislike of meovv’s debut, i honestly think it’s bc yg/theblacklabel have shown ZERO growth with their artists. they’d rather their artists do the same exact thing rather than trying different concepts, sounds, styling, etc. and that’s where the frustration comes from.
