Personally I'm just so happy that Jennie is back at dancing. The dance practice was incredible, her energy was back and her recent live performance was nothing short of incredible??! Idk if it's because she's in better condition or because of Mantra itself but I love this new era of Jennie and I couldn't be happier. I love the song in itself, my sister and I have it on repeat and, really, it's just too good
Maybe its just me and my delusions but Jenne does seem to be more happy performing this song than she has been in recent years. The song absolutely screams "her", Shes so energetic in singing and dancing when performing it live- its so good to see her be unapologetically herself.
it is a bit deeper than i thought but i have my own deep understanding of the song. i mean, its a mantra. for being pretty girls. i heard someone say its another "i am the best, i am rich" song but i think its a little further than that. at the end, when she said "everybody know that she is me". that "me" feels like it could be us. when we sing it, its us. we are pretty girls, we are defenders, we are stunning. me, you, we. so idk, maybe thats just me, maybe im just being a bit delulu. but i really love how empowering this song feels.
Besides being catchy as fuck, I love her singing that she's defending other pretty, successful girls instead fo bringing them down to make herself feel better, lots of people (definitely fans) need a slice of that attitude. I absolutely hate the trend of songs being so short though, she's missing an entire verse and pre-chorus. I understand that it makes sense to achieve higher numbers, but it always makes me feel as if the artists didn't have anything more to say, which I'm sure/hope Jennie does
She has an album coming up (she said in wired interview) plus like jennie said "its not that deep" shes just trying to have fun the song can be as long as she wants it to be
I feel for Jennie as a celeb who has essentially unwittingly become the poster child of the most toxic aspects of stan culture. She didn't ask for it and I wish both her fans and fans of other idols would be more considerate and less immature.
Mantra seems to be the opener for her upcoming full length project, it also seems to be the first project In a project series. I wonder if the implications of this being a mantra will have any significance on the upcoming project as a whole or the project series. I feel like I was left with more questions after the mantra than what I had going into it. By far my favorite Jennie song, nothing else to really ponder right now, waiting for it to be given in the context Jennie wants us to know it in
I think Jennie has always enjoyed the more sexy mature kind of concept, which is probably why she's enjoying her Western pop girl era. She was THRIVING in her Mantra performance on Jimmy Kimmel's show!! Love to see this new side of her! Also her choreo in Mantra reminded me of Danity Kane which I LOVED. Her overall performance for Mantra reminded me of their performances so I felt a moment of nostalgia. Can't wait to see more from her!
You are so right for everything. I cannot even imagine what she has gone through especially seeing all panic attacks she has had in front of people, imagine what has happened behind the scenes. She is a strong person and that's why her haters will never shut up
i don’t think people truly understand the shift that has happened within Jennie & everything surrounding her career. i remember seeing the absolute WORST in people when she released ‘Solo’ in 2018, not knowing that that was the beginning of countless ridiculous hate campaigns against her. Jennie’s aura in this new era is different in the best way - she’s content, full of joy, & more confident than ever. you can tell that being in the studio, writing, or just living life has lended her more time to be comfortable with herself & not this unattainable version her fans (+ haters) have of her. i could go on but, i LOVE ‘Mantra’ and i can’t wait for her artistry to unfold!!
She’s the reason I really got into K-pop - something about Solo really hit with me and it just launched me into looking more into the music and industry. Mantra is such a great hype song I can’t wait to see where she goes next!
The biggest misconception about jennie and blackpink as a whole is that because they aren't having comebacks, they're not working which is completely wrong. Jennie was on a world tour, filming a show (which also had a complete reshoot), met gala and many more fashion events, and even headlining Coachella.. like that's not easy.. and for people to completely put her on blast because she wasn't giving her best on stage.. like she's a human did y'all forget??
No, you’re totally right. The subtle profundity of this song goes hand in hand with its vacuous, shallow shimmer. Neither would be as interesting without the other. It’s so smart. “Pretty girls don’t do drama unless we wanna. It’ll be depending on the day.” Pretty girls contain multitudes- fuck your expectations.
the choujimi application for pretty girl-ism has been accepted ✅ LOL aside from that, i know its been debated heavily, but i personally love that jennie is somewhat breaking away from the conventions of what being a kpop idol is. sure - it doesn’t guarantee her any more freedoms as she still functions within the music industry at large (which is not without flaw either) and will forever be tied to being an idol - but it’s seemingly the allowance she’s been granted to express herself that i appreciate the most. it feels like we are watching her finally come into her own. and like you said, we don’t know her personally, but god, this truly feels like her as an artist and i’m loving every second of it
Been thinking about all your points in this vid since I listened to it. In regards to the ‘giving up’ at times I feel like this is kind of why her performances in the US or perhaps other countries outside of Korea and her Korean performances have been according to what I’ve seen a lot in the comments ‘completely different’. In a lot of ways I feel like she must resent knetz and whether intentional or not that’s why she doesn’t give her all domestically. I’m not saying she’s a bad person for this when I say this. She’s a person with feelings just like all of us. And I’m sure if we were in her shoes we would feel the same way, if anything she’s probably handled it, like you said, better than most would. Anyways that’s just been on my mind so I thought I would add to the discourse. Great video as always :) and even if you are overthinking it I think that’s why we all enjoy your channel
@@dean.mcmxcvi 😭 Thank you so much, Dean! Yeah I agree (or would understand) if she came to resent performing in certain places given a lot of what’s happened. As you said, I think if I was in her shoes I would’ve handled it horribly lol 😭 it’s another lesson that perhaps fans can be too harsh with our expectations towards idols working in this industry. I don’t think it would be a bad thing for the kpop community to be more lenient towards idols universally
As one of the 900,000 people on that debut live (who alredy had an inclination to jennie with the small amount of pre debut content of her that transformed into having her as my favorite kpop idol ever) the pause you took before mentioning the hatred she receives, brought me actual tears.
3:30 i feel like this especially happened during the world tour. she was extremely tired and all of the girls had to work so hard back then. she also had dating rumuors etc. it's like her smile faded :( but i'm happy to see her thriving now as a solo artist
mantra wasnt anything that shocked me but i did like it and i it has made me more excited for her and her upcoming work. jennie was my ultimate bias of all time for many many years. i fell out of love with her and blackpink and general for a while, but this comeback has made me realize why i loved her so much in the first place. it is a bit tainted though as im still stuck on her working with gross men like sam levinson or zico lol.. but im giving her the benefit of the doubt ig. i really missed her. i can’t wait for rosés solo music too. i’m happy they are all doing their own things.
No idol can be the idol people expect them to be. Take for example, lisa and jungkook, people expected them to be cute maknaes, but as soon as they deviated from that image there was backlash. You can't live based on people's expectations and if you are that isnt a life worth living
It's funny cause usually maknaes always end up gravitating towards the more mature/sexy concepts in kpop 😅 i guess they get tired of the cute/innocent/childish image
I personally love Mantra! She outdid herself here and I just fw this more than I initially thought I would. *Really* glad she‘s stepping away from the same old boring YG sound and by the looks of it, we’re getting an studio album, which excites me!!
I've frequently been tired watching her dance. Like in a breathing way. I can mentally just feel her catching her breathe in many performances and I could just find myself chasing my breathe mentally or maybe even physically. She's got an amazing aura and pressence but her stages leave me catching my breathe with her. 😂 In rhe BP era she sometimes left the aura of exhaustion which was understandable, but for this recent 'Mantra stage' she's got me still feeling it, but she's found her balance. She knows when to stop singing and dividing her focus on stage. She's managed to get her dance energy back as well. ❤
This is my first time watching a video in this channel and whole youtube who loves Jennie and is honest, doesn't hurts her reputation and like genuinely understands her. Thank you, I was among the others who waited for bp debut with you and I am a fan since day 1, Jennie is my bias from day 1, it strengthened with time specially in 2018. Thank you good Sir
The main thing that I noticed in Jennie since leaving YG for her solo projects is that she has her motivation and fight back. She wants to conquer and fight for her spot as a main western pop girly, and we can see that not only in her energy but in her music. LOVE IT!!!!!🙌🫶💪
This is why I just can’t with YG’s training their girl idols. How is it that YG can train artistry, songwriting, composing to their boy idols but miss that for their girl idols. Like how is it Jennie is only trained to be a poster idol? She needed to find herself as an artist after she debuted, in contrast to her YG male labelmates who are not only trained to find their artistry, but also then work on their artistry after their debut. Misogyny. Tsk tsk.
@Dashomin unfortunately OP is right, there is this one video that breaks down the situation even more, but I forgot. I believe he is a rapper. The main point is that YG would repeatedly sabotage his female artists by giving them recycled versions of each other's songs. Each gg was not allowed to function as individual groups but as a broken piece of their previous seniors. BP was marketed as the next "prettier" version of 2ne1 and BM was structured off of what worked for BP. It's as if each gg of theirs is like a social experiment to see what can work to make the "ultimate group". In their earlier years and I think even in their "Light Up the Sky" documentary, BP mentioned that the songs they are performing now are a complete 180 from the lyrics they had practiced during pre-debut and basically left a whole lot of uncertainty for where their career is headed. Overall, creative freedom is at the lowest for YG girls. We know more about the BP girls now after they just released 4 to 5 songs than from the 40 smt songs provided by YG, that should say something.
I’ve started to believe that YG does not have much interest in developing girl groups, really. like I really think they make groups because it’s the industry thing to do. and you could tell if an artist under YG has his interest /attention.
i don't think you're looking too much into this. i've been following blackpink (on and off) since their debut and i remember how absolutely happy i was when solo came out. i have been excited to see more of her solo since then, but it went downhill, and when she started teasing mantra i already knew. like it's so visible how much more comfortable, happy and free she feels, i have never seen jennie genuinely smile so much, let alone in a music video. this is the vibrant jennie that she deserved to always be and it felt cathartic watching the mv. i think anyone who has been at least acquainted with her journey will feel that too, because her joy is literally palpable
In some kind of way I do see Blackpink as having become one of the most free kpop groups, whether as a result of the particularly harsh conditions, a decision to pursue a unique marketing strategy, or simply the girls' personalities not being compatible with the typical kpop formula. I think it's probably a combination of all three. I am personally not the biggest fan of blackpink because their music and message just don't really speak to me, but I respect that they have carved out this space for themselves in the industry with a unique formula for what it means to be an "idol". I'm just happy they're not as burnt out as they used to be or as most of today's idols are. If it works for them, I get it. (Also they are a great frame of reference for how insane idol schedules actually are - like 2-3 promotion cycles a year is actually insane.) I'm also curious about the future of blackpink and whether they'll ever really be a group again... their journey has been crazy and I can totally see them being better off as soloists who only reunite once in a while for group activities to satisfy fans. Or not, I do feel like they've reached a point where blackpink is merely a coalition of solo artists rather than a group. But maybe it was always that way... I don't know enough to say for sure.

Im all for Jennie feeling confident in herself and expressing herself. My problem with the song is the association it creates with being pretty with being good. and it assumes and perpetuates the worldview that we all want to be pretty. physical appearance, body type, weight, beauty, etc are all morally neutral. Being oretty doesnt make anyone morally better than anyone else. This is a problem that exists far beyond this one song. I find it pervasive in the entire kpop industry and pretty much everywhere tbh. The ceaseless focus on being thin and pretty that so many people have is horrifying to me. idk if jenny feels this way, not trying to make assumptions, just expressing my frustration in general.
The song focuses more on the social aspect of being pretty rather than the physical. If you focus in on the lyrics there are mentions of pretty girls not doing drama and defending each other. Even in the teaser videos, there were just mentions of aspects of someone's personality that makes them shine and become "pretty".
Yes, I think you're looking too deep into it. However, art is subjective and we all have our own unique point of view. But regardless, this song slaps and I'm happy for Jennie. This is coming from an ex Jennie-hater and Rose-bias. I've still yet to enjoy anything that Lisa has put out. She's lacking something. IDK what it is. But whatever it is, I think Jennie has it.
I'd say for the most part, I enjoyed New woman by Lisa. For others, it may not seem appealing now since Lisa is very much taking baby steps into creativity. From BP, Jennie and Rosé had the greatest experience with creativity even during pre-debut. They all will eventually hit a roadblock of realizing how much they had been missing out on, for Lisa it just so happens to be earlier on. Hoping Jisoo's solo caters more towards her natural Alto / Mezzo tone 🙏
I thought Jennie is Korean? She did spend 3-4 years in New Zealand as a high schooler? Mother is a director at the powerful media entertainment company CJ ENM?
The one thing I noticed in both Spot! and Mantra is that she seems to ne genuinely having fun. And that reflects in the music.
Personally I'm just so happy that Jennie is back at dancing. The dance practice was incredible, her energy was back and her recent live performance was nothing short of incredible??! Mantra is a really good debut and it amazed me in a way because u can see the maturity and rawness in her aesthetics and it’s a big difference compared to her image in blackpink.

@divinefeminine146 Yeah. I grew up lol
Mother is a director at the powerful media entertainment company CJ ENM?
she is korean and lived in new zealand. it’s not that hard to understand lol
It’s just rumours we are not sure what her mom does and yes she is fully korean
She lived in NZ long enough to have a very pronounced Kiwi accent (a rarity in mainstream entertainment).
