ppl always say jyp’s very outdated in the way promote & whatnot, but these recent debuts has shown how outdated yg is as a company. i agree with u in saying that the lack of new ideas is burdening yg & their artists. to me, groups like younge posse, xg, & kiss of life have all the makings to be a modern yg group. the performance, the swag, the presence, the music - they capture it all despite not being under the company whereas babymonster, meovv, & izna (atleast based on the snippet) feel so outdated it’s not funny anymore. especially in how they promote their artists & the structure of every. single. song.
+i think meovv - like current 5th gen groups - has come in at a very awkward time where there might not be much space for them both conceptually and musically.
I fucking agreed totally , I have been also saying the same since baemons debut , altho I do think Baemon is mainly inspired by bigbang , 2ne1 energy more but YG fails to make it clear conceptually , Music wise KIOF and young posse are best examples of how modern YG groups should have been
Am I the only one who has just genuinely liked all their releases on the first listen? I like the chill and laidback with a dash of attitude on meovv and the atmospheric sound of toxic. I didn't understand when people were going oh old style... What does that even mean. Also for "substance", do we mean lyrics? I don't really pay much attention to lyrics especially in the K-pop sphere except for groups or solos that write their own work and have creative control so I never found a problem with it. Anyway I hope people who enjoy it can just do so in peace and those who don't find something else they like (I see many on Twitter just shitting on em)
in a weird way, i feel like meovv has kinda “subverted” expectations - not necessarily in a good way - of what a group like them should LOOK like. like i fully expected them to embrace the kitty persona. where’s the kitty hats? the large cgi cat? no cat woman references? yea its a bit on a nose but dang… hopefully the NEXT release they’ll embrace it.
that's what I was thinking as well like I was expecting their concept to be simliar to baddie by ive where they're all werecats or something simliar to the member reveal teasers where they're all in different universes/timelines challenging the norm with cats as an important motif but then when they debuted we barely got any mentions of cats besides the lyrics and a few scenes in the mv
kpop concept work has two modes. most creative expressive and intricate shit you have ever seen in your life and then half baked releases with only mere nods at a theme or distinct visual language
@@heartcatchprecure the way this is actually so deathly accurate.. like when you compare loona and babymonster for example when it comes to concepts and storytelling the difference is STARK 😭..
everyone complained about it in the debut so they’re trying their best to please the crowd, after all it’s tbl’s first girl group no matter how involved was teddy in bp this is much different so being cautious and the start is what they’re probably trying to do to see what works and what don’t, the release is REALLY good, to please everyone or not idc, so i don’t mind them testing the waters a lil bit
Does anyone remember the random Big Foots in Meow??? From the pre-debut teasers and the mv teaser I had thought their concept was going to be about time travel and how cats were sacred in Ancient Egypt. But they really don't have a concept they are just cool-vibed
So I would like to take it a step further and talk about style over substance in terms of vocals. I think they have really good voices of course as they progress they will become better. And I feel like when you have capable vocals I think is gratifying for you as the singer and your audience to listen to you sing about something emotional and filled with depth. Because there's nothing more heartbreaking and gut-punching than a singer who can bring the words of a song to life.
personally i loveeee their songs soo much, their debut was so unique, we expect so much from a group that just debuted. Most groups in the past didn't even hit their "10/10 hit songs" until the middle of their career but somehow we expect these young groups to make it big in one shot. It takes an amount of struggle and persistence for a group to succeed in a way that it brings satisfaction to the members. I have a feeling, just an intuition ig, they will make it big, its just the start after all. Toxic has to be one of my favourite releases in a while haha. Ur videos r great and i love how ur so positive and don't unnecessarily cause drama.
For someone enjoying musics from 90s and 2000s more than current music trend, I don't think the "outdated" production is an issue. For someone always want stay ahead of trend, there's lots of music out there. No need to keep forcing everyone to follow the current trend.
Would like to let everyone in the comments know. MEOVV aren’t apart of YG. TheBlackLabel is no longer a subsidiary under YG but an associate company. This means they operate on their own and don’t follow what YG do
The thing is Teddy has not done anything to differentiate TBL marketing strategy from that if YG so everything they do remains reminiscent of YG so the comparisons will continue.
To be honest I am a Blink and I don't know why. Like, BP does not have better music than many artists I like and does not have a proper discography with enough so that it can be critiqued. But there is something in the group that captivates my attention. Like, I would probably prefer to listen to Red velvet, Aespa, BTS or Exo but I will never follow these groups - their comebacks or social media. But I will always follow BP and will be excited for their comebacks. It is like their music uplift me and I need a song like Kill this love to start my gym training, then I will get tired of it but after some time I will return and be excited to listen to it again. A weird situation is with blinks and our reason why we stan BP
While talented and cohesive as a group, Meovv’s identity still seems lost . .. . Watching them still gives me a rehash of other YG girl groups . .. Meovv was heavily marketed as a “ different group “ but I am not getting that ( even the facial expressions give off BP vibes ). .. . Overall, with the over-saturation of girl groups, for me to stan a new one, a group has to give me something that is just not a copy or mediocre at best. . . .I do not want to have to give excuses for a group . .. as fans, we deserve better
honestly i really think meovv can make this "all style no substance" thing work if the style HITS. like body, the studio choom video for the choreo is GOD-TIER, the girls have insane stage presence, they can dance REALLY well, like honestly im down to see where meovv takes things. i personally can enjoy both substance-filled music and simple, straight-to-the-point songs, so im kinda the perfect person because i love a song that's just dumb fun in a time where fun songs are being really looked down upon because god forbid people be happy
Body was sw by the same man who wrote “ty, next”, “positions” and “7 rings” from Ariana Grande AND “Ice-cream” by BP and Serena Whereas Narin and Gawon co-wrote Toxic, it’s the difference of musicality between both and i find that amazing because i find groups constantly focused on one concept/sound boring asf. Like i genuinely thought i would never get tired of the newjeans formula but i’m so burn out from SOME (not all ofc) nwjns songs very unfortunately as a debut stan who loves their music. Would I love a storyline to follow like BTS maybe? sure, but it’s really not a dealbreaker from disliking their releases. Both Toxic and Body ate, ESPECIALLY toxic and what i actually need for them is PROMOTION which they’re finally getting! So for me? absolutely no complaints for meovv they’re killing it this november so they better keep releasing.
i don’t know about them, there is no excitement at all for me, like these cheap teaser posters, laziness at its best, also i liked body and felt a little exited about studio choom, and i was so bored..it felt like there is no concept, random outfits, no exact theme, it felt really bland for a dynamic and body moving song.
I’m still waiting for the other 4 songs from there scrapped mini, if body and toxic are 2 of those songs than fine but there’s still 2 Meovv songs we haven’t heard and I don’t know why I don’t have them on my desk to listen to right now
Style > substance is a personal choice. There are music generes that are the opposite : lyrics > music, very low on melody or instrumentation composition engagement, but strong storytelling or poetic writing like folk and rap. Meovv journey has been interesthing, but the style looks to be aiming for easy listen / averge / safe. I hope with album release they pull up some more daring instrumentals or melodys, if the lyrics are gonna be more on the empty side. I cant "forgive" them for taking out the characterist bass of br funk out of the song meovv. ( just joking, but it would give it more weigth).
I think Body is MEOVV's best song so far, but I agree, this group isn't a group about artistic substance.... BUT not every group needs to be. In the 5th gen, we have Kiss of Life for that so it's not like we're starving. Sometimes just some fun songs are okay. No complaints for what MEOVV is doing.
Honestly, my hopes with MEOVV are not so high. I liked Toxic and I'm addicted to Body, but I'm still not completely convinced of their success if TBL doesn't decide to change some forms of promotion and artistic production. I really respect Teddy's legacy and love his work (I'm a blink), so knowing that he has NOT produced any of the songs that MEOVV released so far makes me discouraged. It's something I can't understand, because they are the first gg of HIS company, so I thought he would be behind their sound and we could see a new interpretation of his vision in this new generation. Also, I don't think the girls fit completely into the hiphop concept that has been presented to us so far. Because of the name of the group and the fact that three of the girls have already been models, I thought we would have something more sophisticated and chic. They all have a very expensive energy. Still, I’ll always be looking forward to their releases, they are clearly very talented.
IMO I think they should release a couple more singles, then end up with a debut full album next year including all of the songs they released so far + some extra ones, as for the intro I hope they use the my eyes open wide trailer. As for the album concept and packaging I think they should go with the supermodel/high fashion concept similar to lsrfm debut era
I mean YG is sleepin' on Baby Monster. I just strongly feel that they could be more creative with those young ladies. Meovv has better songs so far, than BM.😢😢
maybe i’m being a bit of a bitch, but i don’t understand why everyone gets so surprised when artists under or produced by yg don’t have “good music” or anything that feels under the cliche yg category. like expecting something of meaning from a yg artist is very…interesting especially if you’ve followed blackpink. they as a group never rlly evolved musically or conceptually and i expect rlly nothing less from these new artists.
